The Bell story began over half a century ago when ayoung British army officer – Lieutenant Frank Bell– was captured as a prisoner of war. Confrontingthe daily hardship and boredom of prison life, Frankbegan teaching his fellow prisoners Spanish andFrench, a simple act of defiance that quickly led tothe creation of a secret university right there in theharsh conditions of the prison camp.

After the war, Frank Bell returned to Englandwhere, reflecting on his experiences, he becameconvinced that the route to internationalco-operation and understanding lay in learning.This led him, in 1955, to open his first language

school in Cambridge which still operates today.

Although Frank might be a little surprised atthe size of the Bell organisation today – over

37 teaching centres in 16 countries, teaching over100,000 students from more than 120 countrieseach year – he would certainly recognise thequality philosophy which has been at the heart ofwhat we do for over 55 years.
