“To find the univer-sal elementsenough; to find theair and the waterexhilarating; to berefreshed by amorning walk or anevening saunter...tobe thrilled by the

stars at night; to be elated over a bird’s nestor a wildflower in spring—these are some ofthe rewards of the simple life.”~John Burroughs

There is a “life” that exists within thePerkins Center in Moorestown and inCollingswood and these buildings breathe, and sing, and dance daily. Each space existsso uniquely within the community and themoment you set foot inside, you feel the cre-ative forces at work and are grounded by thepurity of living art.

Perkins is a shelter for the “universal ele-ments”—those essential building blocksupon which all other life is built. These ele-ments are the foundation of our being andoften the inspiration of visual, performingand musical art-work. Imagine a world with-out art—void of color or sound—whereimagination is absent and creative problemsolving is non-existent. It is this void that thearts fill in so many forms. The arts are univer-sal, timeless, ageless, and can be shared re-gardless of gender, nationality, language, ethnicity or voice. The arts not only provide, but also prove, our humanity. The ability toengage, connect and grow as a human raceis dependent upon our ability to be creative.

At Perkins, we take our Mission “to pro-vide authentic arts experiences that enrichand inspire” very seriously. In February, aswinter was pressing on, the Perkins Centerstaff and faculty was actively preparing forspring. Spring classes and workshops, con-servatory lessons, and residencies will be of-fered in mosaics, musical instruction, painting, voice, dance, glass, photography, pottery, drawing…proving that the breadthof Perkins programming is limitless. As theworld evolves, so does art. Art provides op-portunities for growth and development. Artenriches thought. Art is unique and differentbecause it is borne of the mind and soul and

then is crafted “by hand.”As Perkins readies for the Spring session,

preparations are also underway for anotherarts experience. The evolution of Perkins’ an-nual fundraiser, Handcrafted will transformthe event into an experience to be savoredby artists, art enthusiasts and arts support-ers. Held in a secret location in Moorestown,an evening of art in all of its forms will becelebrated and enjoyed. From artisanal foodand drink to docent tours and a Plein Aircompetition and auction, Handcrafted willbe the premiere arts event of the season.“Making is the most powerful way we solveproblems, express ideas, and shape ourworld.” So says Daniel Charny—internation-ally recognized artist, educator, curator andadvocate for the arts. “Making” is what hap-pens through art and is the sole purposePerkins Center for the Arts was foundednearly 42 years ago.

As we celebrate the arrival of spring, andwelcome the renewal of the earth after along slumber, we urge you to join Perkinsfor a class, a workshop or our upcomingspring arts experience, Handcrafted. Cele-brate the arts and share those universaltruths that are essential to our humanity andthat salvage the human spirit.
