WORKS ON DEPOSIT. SCULPTURE. 21
The first abbey is of doubtful origin ; but it is with probability assignedto the 6th century, the houor of its foundation being ascribed to Sebert,a Saxon king. The building, having been destroyed by the Danes, was rebuilt by Edward the Confessor. Henry III. enlarged it, add-ing a chapel. In the reign of Henry VII. the magnificent chapel bear-ing his name was built and dedicated, as was the earlier one, to theBlessed Virgin. This was designed as a place of sepulture for the king, and his will expressly enjoins that none but those of the royal bloodshould be inhumed therein.
After the reign of Henry VII. the building was neglected until, underWilliam and Mary, Parliament appropriated a large sum for its repair, and Sir Christopher Wren was employed to execute the work, and alsoto add the two Western towers. In 1843, the lantern tower over thechoir was destroyed by fire and the entire edifice endangered.
A beautiful memorial window to two English poets, Herbert and Cowper, has recently been placed in the Abbey by one of America's honoredcitizens.
In constructing the model, various authorities were consulted, amongothers, John Preston Neale, who gives the dimensions of the originalas follows : Extreme length, including the Chapel of Henry VII., 530feet ; width, including transept and choir, 280 feet ; height of tower totop of pinnacle, 225 feet 4 inches.
