Kota is Indonesian for “city”,reflecting the high-density polyp population in this type of coral. Colouration andpattern is variable across these plugs.

The Indonesians call this rare coral “tawon kaki seribu”...translated as “insect of a thousand legs”. The individualpolyp shapes resemble centipedes, whereas the full coral head look like a human brain, and hence the Englishname. Pattern size and colouration is variable.

In 2000, a small working group was formed through the Animals Committee of CITES to evaluate how stony corals are treated under CITES and how to resolve the fossil coral dilemma. The UK commissioned a report from two experts (Tissier & Scoffin) on the issue. The authors conclude that a coral cannot be considered a fossil until all living tissue has died and the coral is buried. Burial and permanent preservation refers to the coral surface becoming covered in hard encrustations (including reef substrate covered by coralline algae), lithification and mineralogical alteration. Current thought is that fossil coral material (including sub-fossil material) should be defined as corals (whole or fragments) that are dead (including all things living on or in it). This means either dead and exposed as in an outcrop, or dead and buried below the sediment/water interface, out the taphonomically active zone ( aka the TAZ). All our coral is extracted from mountains in Sumatra, hasn’t been anywhere near a TAZ for millions of years, and is absolutely legal to trade. Owing to customs officers throughout the world being neither geologists or coral scientists, and seemingly unable to distinguish between the various types of material, we ship our fossil coral as “Star Agate”...a technically accurate description of the goods.

In the summer months of 2008,we decided to visit Indonesia and source the legendary, almost mythical,multi-coloured fossilized coral that was the talk of trade shows worldwide.Attempts to obtain highly graphic firework-pattern fossil coral from other market sources had yielded only bland colourless debris that was unsuited to the product we wanted to make.Contact was made with geologists and miners, and another world opened up....the Sumatran mountains finally yielded their secrets. Almost 400 tonnes of low grade material had slipped into the market, and was being traded as the genuine article. It wasn’t.To get the highest grade,we had to meet larger-than-life characters, people who would go deep into the jungle if the incentive was there and produce the goods.Portering coral heads from jungle to villages can take several weeks...and only a small percentage of the harvest is then claimed and taken to carving villages hundreds of kilometers away to be handmade into jewellery. It was easy to understand how so much unsuitable material had made it to the market....the process for selecting only the high yield rough was arduous and dangerous.Few had bothered to trouble themselves with building the relationships that were necessary. And so the low-grade materials were bought and sold without a second thought. Following from the success of our mission,we now offer the best AAA grade fossilized coral available...beautifully polished high-definition body jewellery direct from the mountains of Indonesia.Four distinct coral types are now in our programme : star, hex or fireworks coral, the ultra-rare brain coral, fern coral and the highly-populated city coral.Wildcat fossil coral jewellery is unlike the other insipid products currently available from our competitors. It is the best there is.

Fossilized coral is a natural stone formed from ancient corals. It should not be mistaken for protected and endangered coral reef from the modern oceans of today.Of the varieties of fossilized corals found throughout the geologic record, exquisitely detailed specimens from the remote ranges of Indonesia are most unique and beautiful. Corals have been growing in the oceans around the world for almost 500 million years. The corals thrived in warm shallow marine waters and over time were buried in sediments as the land surface was juggled by crustal plate movements or the oceans rose and fell.Temperature and pressure from compaction during burial, resulted in those deposits,in time, becoming rock and part of the present day geological record. The theory of plate tectonics : new ocean crust is created by upwelling basaltic magma along the mid-ocean ridges.Ocean plates move away from mid-ocean spreading centers and subduct under the continental plates.Subducting ocean plate material re-melts as it reaches depths under high temperature and pressure and becomes molten magma which seeps back up to the surface and erupts through volcanic vents. This occurrence is most evident along the Pacific Rim,what is commonly known as the Ring of Fire, an area depicted by high incidence of volcanic activity. Indonesia is located on convergent plate boundaries. Subduction of the northeast moving Indian Ocean plate under the western islands of the Indonesian archipelago has resulted in a long history of volcanic activity. Extensive eruptions of volcanic debris have repeatedly buried forests and nearby reefs offshore as well.During burial, the decay of the volcanic ash releases mobile silica and other elements which saturate formation waters and in some situations reacts with the carbonate of the buried coralline reefs or other organic matter such as wood from buried forests. The volcanic islands of Indonesia are host to numerous deposits of fossil coral. The Barisan Mountain Range, along the western boundary of the Island of Sumatra, hosts a rare and ornate suite of fossils. Miocene age (approx 20 million year old) coralline reefs and near shore forests were preserved by burial in volcanic sediments rich in minerals including iron, manganese and silica. Through a combination of processes the full pattern and character of the original coral life forms have been preserved in great detail. “Permineralization” is the process of filling pore space in and around the remnant hard coral skeleton with minerals deposited from solutions trapped or migrating through the sedimentary pile as it is compressed into rock. “Replacement” is the process whereby the original coral skeleton is replaced molecule by molecule with a mineral or minerals from a solution. For example, calcium carbonate(CaCO3)from the hard structure of the coral is replaced by silica(SiO2)from trapped or migrating solutions as rock was being formed. This dual process preservation can occur with different accessory mineral concentrations and result in maintaining the contrast between the original soft tissues and the skeletal remains of the corals as different minerals impart different colours to the stone. The geochemical and geological conditions under which these processes take place are typically slightly acidic, low temperature and low pressure. The resultant deposition of replacement product is a micro or cryptocrystalline quartz commonly termed “agate”. In Indonesia, entire coral heads are often completely preserved and appear just as they did 20 million years ago although their density is much changed by replacement and infill with silica, iron, manganese and other minerals. All fossilized coral products are handmade, and completely natural. They are rigorously hand-polished with bamboo sticks,in the traditional Indonesian way.As corals don’t grow in straight lines, the two faces of any given plug will be different.Of course,we try and match pairs as close as is possible. Fossilized coral plugs are approximately twenty million years old.

Petrified Wood. Of the unquantifiable billions of trees ever to have photosynthesized under the sun only a minute fraction were placed in circumstances to fossilize, and of these an even smaller percentage have survived. Exceptional conditions prerequisite for petrification had to have been present, and these factors rarely coincided.Almost all plant materials decay rather than petrify. For a tree to become petrified it must be in an anaerobic environment to prevent decay:it somehow must be buried in an oxygen-free environment, examples being in the bend of a silt-laden river, the bottom of a lake or in volcanic deposits. Over millions of years, petrifying branches have shifted from vegetable to mineral. What was once simply a tree is now transformed into a unique gemstone. The mineralization of entire plants as fossils is conditional on tissue systems present, particular states of growth, fructification, prefoliations and preflorations. Then there’s the relative abundance and kind of mineralizing materials;temperature;presence or absence of secondary reagents, such as iron, capable of replacing plant tissues and preserving their microscopic structures in finely differentiated form;the duration and rapidity of chemical activity, and the nature of the embedding rock material. Then theres the freedom from maceration or decay of the original plants at the time of their fossilization as well as subsequent chemical changes or compression in the containing beds after the early process of preservation is completed. There must be a source of sedimentary material in a soluble or particulate form.An early petrification retains considerable amounts of the original plant material albeit now encased in mineral. As time proceeds, increasingly more of the original biological matter is replaced by the invading minerals. An examination of the vast majority of the worlds petrified forests reveals a relationship with volcanic action. This can be by means of massive ash falls in the environment of petrification,by the actual burial of a forest itself in volcanic ash,or by the burial of a forest in a lava flow (or associated mud flows.) The basic substances composing the bulk of petrified woods are hydrous microcrystalline varieties of quartz (chalcedonay or opal).Chalcedonic material is often agate and its varieties.Opal occurs mostly as “common opal”.Opal is colloidal silica, translucent milky white to yellow, green or grey. The many colours found in petrified materials are a function of groundwater chemistry during formation.Sediments consist of ash-laden silts, mud, clays and sands.Acidic solutions containing iron and manganese add colours.Green appears from ferrous oxides and chromium, red and orange from iron, black from manganese, carbon, and iron(ferric),white and gray from silicon dioxide and purple from iron and manganese. Our petrified palm is sourced from the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Java, areas known for huge volcanic activity and tectonic turbulence. The palms come from the Oligocene Period, between 20 and 40 million years ago. The characteristic spotted design originates from the rod-like structures within the wood.Depending on how the plugs are cut, these structures show as spots, streaks, rings, tapering rods or parallel lines. These interesting patterns reflect the internal anatomy of the tree, particularly the layout of the vascular bundles through which water and nutrients were conducted from the roots to the leaves. No two plugs are identical.Often, the two main surfaces on one plug are substantially different, reflecting the rate of change within the raw material.Petrified palm is chalcedonay, very hard (over 7 on the Mohs scale),and takes a wonderful polish. All plugs are hand polished with bamboo. Colour variation of the raw material is significant.Brown shades, light tans, golds, yellows, oranges, grays and black proliferate. Black Core Palm is much rarer than the lighter colours, and is highly prized amongst collectors.

Feather Agate is a Marine Foraminifera Fossil, one of some 275,000 species recognized in the fossil record which are a major part of the ocean food chain. Some are planktonic which float and others live on the sea floor. Most are single celled simple life forms. Our Feather Agate is “Discocyclina Marginata”,a micro benthic single cell asexually reproducing bottom feeder. These creatures lived in the oceans from the Mid Paleocene(60 million years ago)to Upper Eocene(33 million years ago).It is found high in the mountains of Sumatra, the result of violent tectonic plate shifts and turbulent volcanic activity. The preservation of Discocyclina fossils typically occurred in calcareous (CaCO3) limestone. The hard remnants of the skeletons were formed from CaCO3, but at our Sumatran location, the fossils are solidly mineralized in a fine grained microcrystaline agate,a totally unique form of preservation. The original CaCO3 skeleton of Discocyclina fossils are fully replaced by fine microcrystalline silica (SiO2). The Indonesians call this material “Badar Buluh Ayam” which translates as Jasper of Chicken Feathers. The published scientific name Discocyclina seems suggestive of a random exhibit of fossils.Typically, agatized Discocyclina displays visual similarities to sheathes of wheat, with clusters of fossils fanning out or rhythmically splayed, hence the lapidary name of “Feather Agate”. The often gray to jet black background gives offers terrific contrast for the beige to white coloured Discocyclina fossils, and the tight ornate pattern and tough, nonporous, microcrystalline agate texture make wonderful jewellery products. All plugs are hand-polished with bamboo,no two are identical.

v

Although not yet confirmed by paleobotanists, the recent discovery of clusters of botryoidal agate coated bamboo shaped casts, buried in young volcanic ash and tuffs with other fossilized forest remnants, seem identifiable by association alone. The single location in Central Java lies in the midst of 11 modern day composite volcanoes, including the well know Mt Merapi often seen spewing ash by air travelers in transit from Jakarta to Bali. Preservation of this unique material appears to have resulted from burial by a volcanic eruption of siliceous volcanic ash.The decomposing volcanic ash combined with water and oxygen over time produced acidic fluids super saturated in dissolved silica, iron and other elements along with very fine grained suspended components of volcanic debris. Periodic rains allowed oxygen rich surface waters to percolate down into the volcanic pile, diluting the acid chemistry and causing deposition of the silica and its suspended components using the remnant bamboo as a nucleus.Over time, repeated episodes dissolved the ash surrounding the bamboo and deposited layer upon layer of agate around the bamboo in a botryoidal form creating a surface like a cluster of grapes. Colours of rich orange, red and purples resulted from the iron, manganese and other elements in the mix.Occasional manganese dendrites formed in some layers as well.all fractures are healed. Why the larger diameter bamboo has not been preserved is not understood. It may be related to the moisture content of the younger shoots at the time of burial. It may have been that this was a species of bamboo which was originally a small diameter. The fossil bamboo find first surfaced in 2008,which coincided with our visit there, and already seems to have played out.We managed, through our local contacts,to grab 100 kilo of high-quality ‘AAA’grade specimen rough. Many pieces were seriously tangled and fused together in crazy clusters.Extracting the best tubes,we have managed to produce a good quantity of interesting ear plugs. Some have the botryiodal skin, others have been ground down. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to acquire exotic earwear from the only known source of fossil bamboo. In April of 2009,at a major Indonesian craft fair,a local collector showed his stock of fossil bamboo, exciting journalists, media interest and political eyes.A consequence of this exposure seems to be that the supply has dried up.Maybe the local government took an interest, the landowner closed the site,or the stock was already depleted and exhausted.A few specimens can still be seen in department stores around Jakarta, and small pieces are being sold as cigarette holders in markets. But the good stuff is gone. Tangled low grade clusters are available from stone dealers, but are unusable for jewellery purposes, being shattered and matted to the point of being almost unrecognisable. We are pleased to claim we have the very best material.Once its gone, the product is over.

BRECCIATED MOOKAITE Another unique Western Australian gemstone, again discovered in the Kennedy Ranges.Technically a brecciated radiolarite, this material has a red cementing matrix producing countless abstract patterns.

DINOSAUR BONE Dino Bone cabochons are genuine fossilized dinosaur limbs in which the original organic cellular structure has been replaced with quartz (i.e the biological material has been agatized over time). This structure displays as a honeycomb.Different colours occur due to the presence of various minerals (silica, calcite, carbonates and iron)in the surrounding sediment at or after the time of burial.

FEATHER AGATE Spectacular agatized marine foraminifera fossils from the Pacific Ocean floor.

FOSSIL CORAL Agatized Indonesian fossil coral from the Barisan mountains in Sumatra.

FOSSIL PALM Petrified Indonesian palm from the jungles of Sumatra.

FOSSIL CORAL Agatized Indonesian fossil coral from the Barisan mountains in Sumatra.

PEANUT WOOD A rare double fossil, found only around Gascoyne Junction in Western Australia. The material base is petrified aracauria (conifer) wood. The light colored “peanut” markings in this material are mollusk borings which have been filled with white radiolarian silt.Having been baked for seventy million years in searing temperatures, the components have fused together in this super-rare fossil rock. Peanut wood was washed into the ocean as driftwood where it was subsequently fed on by a marine shellfish called Teredo, (aka shipworm). These bivalves bore tunnels into the wood as they ate and eventually gorged the entire piece with their boreholes. When the driftwood became waterlogged and sank to the sea floor it was covered with silt, filling the boreholes with radiolarian sediment,a common opal comprising of the shells of billions of dead sea creatures. Colour and design variations exist in all Peanut Wood cabochons.

AMMONITES Ammonites are the ancient equivalent to the modern-day chambered Nautilus. These sea faring squids built a chambered shell in which they would pump air into the empty chambers and float at different levels of the ocean in search of food. This unique ability to float at different depths of the ocean is what inspired Jules Vern to call the first submarine the Nautilus. Ammonites lived approximately 400 million years ago.Locality is Madagascar.

FOSSIL HORN CORAL Agatized Horn Coral is rare...it is almost 400 million years old,the specie is extinct, and because the mine where these finds come from was closed due to being included into a National Monument. This fossil coral comes from the Silurian Age which dates to 390 million years old and falls within the Paleozoic Era. Horn Corals are from the extinct order of corals called Rugosa. The fossil is the skeleton of the coral animal (polyp). The animal lived at the top of the cone, and had many tentacles lashing out to gather food.

OUTBACK JASPER Another highly-silicified,colour contrast gemstone from the outback of Western Australia, again with random abstract geometric patternwork.

TIGER IRON Tiger iron has compacted layers of tiger eye sandwiched between seams and strata of red jasper and hematite. A stunning conglomerate gemstone from Western Australia.

MOOKAITE Mookaite is a unique multi-coloured silicified radiolarian siltstone from Australia. It can be found in combinations of reds, purple, yellows, white and occasional blues and browns. It is formed as a sediment in erosion zones and as a filler in cracks. It is named after Mooka Station,a sheep farm the size of a small nation (around 700,000 acres) adjacent to the Kennedy Ranges near Gascoyne Junction,150 km inland from the coastal town of Carnarvon in Western Australia. Microscopic examination of the radiolarite has shown that this rock consists principally of the remains of tiny organisms known as radiolaria.Countless numbers of these microscopic animals were deposited as sediment in the shallow, near shore area of ancient seas. When the seas retreated, these sediments were cemented into solid rock by silica carried in groundwater, either from the radiolaria themselves or from weathered rocks nearby.Estimates put the formation at 105 to 115 million years old (Lower Cretaceous).

PREHNITE (Volcanic Infill) Prehnite is a complex silicate found in the lining in the cavities of volcanic rocks.Colour range is from white, gray and yellow to chartreuse green.Imported from Australia (where it is sometimes referred to as “Australian Jade”).

OPALIZED WOOD From Queensland,Australia. These cabochons are fossilized replacement (opalization)of ancient trees .This material had distinct patterned lines throughout & ranges in colours from tans to browns and some golden hues.

PRINTSTONE Printstone is a sensational gemstone, found only in the Hamersley Ranges in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The stone is approximately two billion years old,and studies indicate that the unusual markings may have stromatolitic origins.Slabs are multi-coloured,packed with astonishing animal skin patterns, and like no other rock on the planet. Many different outcomes are possible when cutting this stone, and the jewellery reflects these design variables.

NOORENA JASPER Noreena Jasper is a newly discovered gemstone from the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is a silicified pelite (mudstone)and is believed to be almost three billion years old (late Archaean,a period in the Earths history when photosynthetic bacteria was the only life form on the planet). Each stone cut is different, and displays random geometric abstract designs.

Pacific Plugs all incorporate hand-crafted components made on a variety of islands in the region, particularly those around the South China Sea and the Java Sea.Many exotic materials are used, including graphic seashells, birdseed, bamboo and even cinnamon cuttings. As all the cabochons used involve handmade assembly skills,no two pieces are exactly the same.

Gibeon Meteorite Claimed to be more than four and a half billion years old....older than the earth itself...... Discovered in 1836 in Namibia, more than 20 tons of Gibeon meteorites have been recovered and although in recent times the export and sale has been prohibited by the Namibian government,Gibeon meteorites exist in museums and collections worldwide. It is perhaps the most famous meteorite of all time.No new finds have been allowed to enter the marketplace for many years, and this situation is expected to prevail. We have accessed a nice supply of genuine Gibeon slices, and have cut these up to form several hundred “sugarloaf” cut square cabochons to make a great collection of “out-of-this-world” body jewellery. Our bananabells have either an 8mm or a 10mm square meteorite held in a silver case, attached to a surgical steel stem. The 8mm Gibeon square cabochons weigh 1.3g each(6.5 ct)and the 10mm ones 2.1g (10.5ct).All display the famous etched Widmanstätten pattern, and have been electroplated to avoid corrosion. All originate from broken asteroid fragments or an exploded star and radiometric dating places the age in excess of 4 billion years old. Gibeon meteorites are composed of iron, nickel and small amounts of cobalt and are classified as a “fine octahedrite iron meteorite”. Some other minerals that may be found in the meteorite are chromite, deabreelite, enstatite, kamacite, taenite, troilite or tridymite and are derived from planetary cores that were broken apart billions of years ago by catastrophic impact events. The crystalline patterns within meteorites are known as “Widmanstätten” patterns after the Austrian Count Alois von Widmanstätten who first discovered these abstract designs in 1808.These patterns are formed of interwoven bands of kamacite and taenite, and can only form over literally millions of years of cooling. It has been estimated that it took 1000 years for these molten pieces of planetary core to cool by just 1 degree celsius. These alloys do not occur on Earth. Gibeon body jewellery is limited in supply.

Cross Agate : A Unique Gemstone From East Java Although Cross (and Alphabet) agate stones are found in Indonesia, the conditions surrounding their formation may occur elsewhere in the world.

The ornate potential of this stone was recognized by the mountain village stone collectors and craftsman of East Java in 2003. An interpretation of how these agates form is taken from modern day observations.Take mud at the bottom of a pond. The pond dries up and the mud becomes hard and cracks. These are tensional (pull-apart)cracks termed desiccation cracks.Apply the same scenario to a hot spring environment and the fissures below which feed the hot springs. The hot, mineral saturated water with dissolved silica, iron and other minerals react to desiccation like the mud.As the hot spring matures,it cools and the hot waters stop circulating. The siliceous sinters and agate filled feeder fissures below also dry up precipitate their dissolved and suspended minerals and crack. The heat and fluids which feed hot springs are driven by subsurface volcanic activity. These types of systems are long lived and last from tens of thousands to upwards of millions of years. Recurrent magmatic pulses take place at depth, old conduits reopen and old hot springs regenerate at surface.Chemistry of upwelling fluids may change as they mixed with ground water. The water table may change with the climate.Depositional fluids may contain dissolved iron, manganese or other materials along with silica. When an old hot spring gains new life, old cracks, veins and fissures below become conduits for new fluids which may deposit the iron and silica and later seal the old cracks as the system dies again. These late crack fillings stained by the residual iron or other elements contrast with the older parent agate exhibiting a crisscross pattern. Hot spring deposits and their feeder systems can be later exposed at surface by uplift and erosion. The pebble size agates we find in modern day stream beds with red (iron) stained silica cemented (sealed) desiccation cracks are actually the fossil remains of ancient hot spring systems. The different colour agate with fills the healed cracks are just evidence of different mineral saturation in the late stage fluids pulsing the mature hot spring system. The skill in capturing the image,be it a cross,a letter or a fish,is in the eye of the cutter.Identifying isolated cross shapes in tangled patterns in three dimensions is seriously difficult,time-consuming and often unrewarding. The penetration of color fill into the stone varies. The majority of the crack fills are only a millimeter or less.No two crosses or letters are exactly alike, making each and every stone a truly unique and one of a kind gem. All our Cross Agate bananabells feature 100% non-adulterated Indonesian gemstones. The cross pattern is naturally formed, probably many millions of years ago.Supply is,of course, limited.
