Lighting means safety in indoors carparks. For anyone driving in search of

a safer and more tranquil place to park, for the pedestrian who wants to be

able to immediately find the quickest way to the exit, for anyone checking

for problems from a remote position. But the lighting must also adapt to the

real use of the carpark, which is very variable throughout the day and night.

In such cases, a custom product with optics for low height installations and

optimized light distribution without dazzle is the best possible solution.

Just like being outdoors - our underground carpark products employ the

NanoOptic technology, providing illumination so uniform it seems the light

of day. Using a sensor on-board the fixture allows each light to be controlled

In February 2008, for the first time in Italy, a motorway tunnel was illuminated

with LED lights - and the natural choice was Cree products. The resulting

changes have been enormous. Led lights have numerous advantages

over conventional lights. The most important is their long service life, and

this critically affects another fundamental consideration - the need for

maintenance. Keeping a tunnel lighting system working properly can be time-

and cost-intensive. Inside the tunnel, bacteria, smog and dust accumulate

quickly due to the continuous traffic. Compared with conventional system,

which have to be kept clean with special machinery, so that the tunnel has to

be closed for many hours at a time, Cree LED units make life much simpler.

Cree has equipped its fixtures with an exclusive heat dissipation system which

reduces the accumulation of dust and reduces maintenance operations and

times by more than 50%. Furthermore, the fixtures can be cleaned off quickly

by simply spraying them with water. Since Cree LED lights were chosen to

light the tunnel, power consumption has gone down, and performance has

greatly increased: more safety, outstanding visibility and uniformity.

Fixtures must adapt to the application, not vice-versa, and to do so they must

be flexible and modular. The modularity of the Cree lighting system means

flexible products which can freely combine multiple mounting systems,

precision optics and numbers of LEDs. The client can choose from around 20

optics, the light distribution, the number of LEDs and their color temperature.

The electronics allow each light to be controlled intelligently for brightness

at different times of the day and ambient and traffic conditions. Thanks to

the various types of control, the programming options are effectively infinite:

from photocell or timer controlled to power line communications.

Research & Development: the road to new frontiers

NanoOptic technology is the testament to the extraordinary results a

company can achieve if it seriously dedicates itself to R&D. This exclusive

system, a Ruud Lighting patent, is designed for controlling the lighting output

of individual LEDs. Each chip is equipped with a direct contact refractor which

models the beam, resulting in efficiencies of greater than 90%. NanoOptic

lenses optimize the output of each source: the precision and uniformity of

the beam are greater than that of any of our competitors' products.

The possibility to properly dissipate each LED and the behavior of the entire

motor in case of problems with a single diode, depend on the specifications

of the circuit and its assembly. Ruud Lighting has designed and fabricated a

PCB which guarantees outstanding operation by using temperature sensors

which control the driver to dim the power current when diode overheating is

detected, until nominal conditions are restored. As a further guarantee, each

LED has a counter diode which compensates for malfunctions.

The PCB: the basis for unbeatable performance

the output of conventional units. Maintenance costs are thus significantly

reduced, while performance remains excellent for many years. This is the

ideal solution for public authorities and companies bearing high power costs.

Reduced environmental impact is an integral part of Ruud Lighting technology

- and we're proud to be able to say so. Our fixtures contain no mercury or

other polluting substances, they last longer than conventional discharge

products, do not require bulb changes, nor need special handling for disposal.

LED technology gives average power savings of around 60% compared to

conventional lighting equipment: when Cree products are fitted with lighting

control system, this increases to 70-75%. Furthermore, each optical system

is designed to eliminate light pollution: all fixtures are certified by the Dark

Sky Association (IDA).

Savings everywhere - except in performance

Cree products have a very strong housing and produce less heat than

conventional light sources, thanks to the Thermal Management system,

which prevents overheating. Furthermore, they attract less dust, smog and

insects to the emitter, and do not accumulate dirt on the lens, which reduces

The die-cast aluminum housings of Cree products are treated with the special

patented Ruud Lighting Colorfast Deltaguard finish: 18 treatment steps, 10

years of warranty, a bulletproof finish capable of standing up to the most

aggressive atmospheres. Colorfast Deltaguard consists in a multi-stage

pretreatment followed by a highly adhesive epoxy primer, and a finish coat in

polyester powder. The resulting finish is:

The exclusive Air Flow system uses natural ventilation to dissipate heat. This is

achieved by leaving the housing open to cool the dissipators to which the LED

modules are mounted. The air circulating freely inside the housing disperses

the heat produced by the diodes, increases their service life and guarantees

top performance over the long term (lumen emitted >90% at 50,000 hours of

operation at 700mA). To this end, Ruud Lighting mounts each LED bar on heat

dissipators which ensure that the diodes are always at the ideal temperature.

Air Flow technology:optimal performance at the ideal temperature

To seal and protect our products against water and dust, we inject a special

silicon foam into cavities in the aluminum die-casting in the Foam in

Place procedure. Compared with conventional systems, foam creates a

custom gasket for each unit. The precision of the process, which employs

Foam in Place: sealed, proofed products

an automated mechanical boom, and the flexibility of the foam itself ensure

perfect adherence and a tight seal around all ducts. At the end, the unit is fired

in an infrared oven to solidify the foam, thus rendering each unit proof against

dust and water, for a rating of IP 66.

The overall quality of Cree products is the sum of numerous tiny perfections at

every level of the production supply chain: from the smallest part to the final

finish. Subjected to severe, repeated controls, each fixture and component is

rigorously checked, from the circuitry to the light bars. The tests are not run

only on the finished product, but also on its components, which are barcoded

to register the results of every control and ensure tracking of all phases of

production.

Traceable, controlled, unbeatable: the quality bar just went up

Cree products have two fundamental characteristics: they breathe, and

they are infiltration proof. The Air Flow dissipation system allows the LEDs

to breathe, thus improving their performance, and the advanced Foam in

Place system seals sensitive areas against water and dust. A product which

is thus open, and at the same time sealed, is only possible with meticulous

production controls, starting from the system's motor - the LED. This is how

our light bars are rated IP66, and are subjected to a specific Vacuum Test

which measures the IP protection of the light bar and the compliance of each

LED module with the standard. After having determined the protection rating,

the test result is registered and linked with the barcodes for the individual

light bars.

Using the Vision Test, all light bars are tested to check the operation of each

LED, both in terms of brightness and color temperature.

Guaranteed: each LED always gives its best

End of line tests are not run on samples but, to fulfill our quality standards,

we run them on 100% of our production. Before being sold, each product is

tested to ensure all components are correctly assembled. The results are

marked on the barcode label of each product, to which is linked the results of

the tests run on the individual components.

Cree lights Aberdeen airport in Scotland and makes the difference. The side roads and the roads in front of the entrance are lit by 48 Cree ThE EDgE Street fixtures. Following the installation of the new

system, the airport security staff noticed that the white light increased the feeling of security. They also agreed they now had a more precise and clear view of the area thanks to the excellent uniformity

of the color rendering. Cree ThE EDgE Street fixtures were fitted to replace the existing 250 W hPS discharge lamps, providing energy savings of 49%.

The Municipality of Zambana has been lit with Cree fixtures, adapting the project to suit the different urban settings. 11 Cree ThE EDgE Street fixtures with 20 LEDs were used for the narrowest alleyways; 64 ThE EDgE Street fixtures with 40 LEDs were installed in the side streets; the main roads on the other

hand were lit with 77 ThE EDgE Street 60 LED units. All the fixtures were fitted onto existing poles and equipped with a type of optic that reduces back-lighting, precisely concentrating the light onto roads and pavements without light dispersion behind the pole which can be disturbing for homes facing the road. In

order to make a lower impact on public finances, the Municipality chose to use a light control system that allows the light to be programmed and dimmed during the hours when there is less traffic, thus increasing energy savings.

Verona's borgo Venezia quarter boasts a lovely, well-lit town square. A church, a red marble fountain, a war monument and a small green area are combined to create a harmonious space. The lighting highlights the individual elements as

well as enhancing the overall effect. NanoOptic technology made it possible to equip each fixture with the best optic to suit the different design requirements. Rotosymmetrical light distribution was chosen for the piazza, whilst for the park

two asymmetrical optics better suited for lighting streets and footpaths were used. In total, 12 EDgE Round fixtures with 60 LEDs each were installed.

The proximity of this project to the natural habitat of the yellow-bellied toad, a very rare amphibian native to the waters of the Trentino and at risk of extinction, required the creation of an effective and yet non-invasive lighting system. The yellow-bellied toad feeds on insects, which would have been at risk of disappearing following

the installation of an invasive lighting system due to the high temperatures released. The requirement for an eco-friendly solution was brilliantly satisfied by the designers, TKP Engineering and Studio Ferro, with Cree LED fixtures, which meet the stringent standards applicable in such cases: operating temperature of

no more than 55, with maximum output of 0.49 Cd/Klm at 90 and over (Trento Provincial Law n. 16/07). Thanks to the Ledway Wall mounting system, the products were positioned on the bridge's load-bearing pillars, without poles or arms, so as to respect the architectural and styling values of the structure.
