The President Speaks Hello Fellow Angus Breeders, As I write this letter I am in Denver at the National Western Stock Show. Denver is known to be the “Grand Daddy” of all the cattle shows in the United States. Two things I have noticed while being here is that the cattle numbers are up and the enthusiasm in the cattle industry is very high. Denver is also a great place to start planning for the spring breeding season. One has the opportunity to view some of the up and coming new sires that the semen companies and breeders have to offer. It also gives you a chance to “talk cattle” with the sale’s reps, and other breeders. As you study the pedigrees of the cattle being showed or on display in Denver, you can see that many of them originated in Kansas. For example, Champion Hill acquired the Georgina cow family from Lakeland Farms in Wisconsin. They in turn, purchased their Georgina’s from Lyons Ranch who acquired theirs from the McCurry Brother’s. Another example is a bull named Connealy Final Product, this bull traces back to Gardiner Angus. The bull, BC Look Out, traces back to the Ohlde Cattle Co. The list could go on and on. As Kansas Angus Breeder’s, we should be proud of our ability to produce such great cattle. Maybe when looking for your next donor cow or next herd bull you should look no further than our own back yard. Joe Hite President 2011

“I retain ownership. I’m not interested in producing an average calf.Every calf must be above average when it reaches the packer for me to be successful. By using the genetics and information I get

from Gardiner Angus Ranch and managing the best I can, I know I’m doing my part to produce

a superior end product.”

—Randy Browning, Appleton City, MO

Randy has retained ownership on more than 2,500 home-raisedcalves since 1997. Today, his calves are 55 lbs. heavier

at finish with 3 fewer days on feed. Average dry matterconversion has improved from 6.78 to 5.93 lbs. In June,

104 head of Browning’s steers sold through U.S. PremiumBeef and returned $115.53 per head in premiums above

the cash market. Randy’s cattle easily finished in thetop 25% of all cattle processed through USPB in 2010.

Accepting Applications for 2011 BLI The Beef Leaders Institute (BLI) is designed for American Angus Association members, 25-45 years old, as a resource to provide insight to all segments of the beef industry. Attendees will be stronger, more effective leaders for the Angus breed and beef industry now and in the future. The Association will provide transportation during the BLI, as well as lodging, meals and materials. The attendees will be responsible for their round-trip transportation between their home and Kansas City (if flying) or Saint Joseph (if driving). The 2011 BLI is June 20-24. A final schedule will be announced with letters of acceptance. The BLI is limited to 20 attendees each year. Applications are due to the Association by March 1. Contact American Angus Association Attn: Activities & Events Department 3201 Frederick Ave. Saint Joseph, MO 64506 Or fax to: 816-233-9703 Or e-mail to: [email protected] for an application . Finally: Affordable ID The American Angus Association’s Tag Store has what you’re looking for. As spring calving nears cattlemen looking for herd identification options have a new — and affordable — alternative. The Tag Store, available at www.customcattletags.com, offers everything from standard ear tags to customizable and electronic ID options. The American Angus Association® web site also offers some of the industry’s most extensive custom-printing options available. “The Tag Store was launched to provide producers with the opportunity to purchase high-quality, custom-printed cattle ear tags at unbeatable prices,” says Sara Snider, AngusSource® director who oversees the site. “The interactive site allows you to build your cattle tags step-by-step and to preview a mock-up prior to ordering. It’s fast and easy.” ID tags offered through the site also provide options for state associations or others hosting seasonal sales, Snider says. The Tag Store exclusively offers Destron Fearing™ products, which allows for low prices on the following items: • Visual tags — The foundation of most ID systems, visual Duflex® tags come in a wide range of colors, sizes and customizable options. Producers can add a management number and text to the front of the tag free of charge. Logos, text on the reverse side of the tag or on the tag stud are also available for a small fee. • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags are available as an individual e. Tag®, as part of a visual in a Combo e. Tag® or paired with a visual tag in a ChoiceSet™. RFID tags offer producers the opportunity for more advanced and efficient electronic record keeping. • COOLTags™ are available as a visual, e. Tag, Combo e. Tag or ChoiceSet for producers with a Premises ID wishing to purchase “840” tags. Accessories are also available through The Tag Store. Applicators, readers, panel antennas, headgate kits, markers and knives can be purchased at below-retail prices. All tags are manufactured within 3 to 5 business days and shipped directly to the producer; flat rate shipping charges apply. Visit www.customcattletags.com for more information. If you’re purchasing tags for commercial calves and are interested in source and age verification, consider enrolling in AngusSource® or Gateway. Recent video auction data show enrollment in AngusSource and/or Gateway can add significant value to your calves, visit www.angussource.com to download enrollment information. Looking for KAN Cover Photos

The KAA recently sent out a notice via email to members on our E-Update “Looking for cover photos” Several nice photos were received including this issue’s cover shot as well as the one here . Where’s the premium? High percentage Angus calves continue to outsell non-Angus calves of similar weight and frame at livestock auctions across the U.S. Data collected from eight cooperating markets in fall 2010 reveal steers of that breed brought $6.32 per hundredweight (/cwt.) more than their non-Angus counterparts. That’s a $32.58/head Angus advantage for the average 516-pound (lb.) steer. Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) has tracked similar patterns regionally and nationwide since 1999 through its “Here’s the Premium” study. Average premiums have trended higher for Angus genetics over the years, with the most recent figure just 47 cents/cwt. below the 2008 record spread, but on slightly heavier average weights. The Angus heifer premium over non-Angus was 44 cents/cwt. more than in 2008. The 2010 comparison study included more than 10,000 head from nearly 600 lots; the overall database contains records on 12,721 lots and approximately 275,000 cattle from 13 states. The markets participate in the study on condition that exact locations remain confidential. “We’ve seen the premium grow because cattle feeders have learned from experience that high-percentage Angus cattle are healthier and more profitable to feed than other types, said Steve Suther, the CAB director of industry information who initiated the study. “When they bid accordingly, there are more dollars for Angus cow-calf producers compared to those with other cattle.” The premium has endured independent of commodity cattle market trends (note top line in historical graph). Kevin Dhuyvetter, an agricultural economist at Kansas State University, has been providing statistical expertise from the start. “This was the second highest Angus premium among 10 sets of fall values for steers,” Dhuyvetter said. “It was the third highest Angus premium for heifers.” For the first eight years of the project, fall surveys compared prices for Angus and non-Angus calves weighing 400 lb. to 599 lb., and spring surveys compared those for 600 lb. -799 lb. feeders. Since 2008, the survey is only conducted every other fall. While the overall average price per head tends to increase for the lighter fall-sold calves, premiums for all Angus-influenced cattle have remained consistent and strong throughout the study. As the last two HTP installments have shown strong Angus-influenced premiums, the average historical premium for all Angus steers in the database moved up by $2.96/head from 2008 to average $24.22 in the 2010 report. All calf prices were consistently $12 to $14/cwt. higher at northern and western locations, compared to the base of Oklahoma, but Kentucky calf prices averaged $5.86/cwt. lower, Dhuyvetter noted. Auction markets from states that also include Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, California and Nebraska reported breed type, sex, weight, and price of calves personally known as Angus genetics compared to non-Angus calves on four different sale dates. One Dakota market manager said roughly 80% of the cattle sold there are high-percentage Angus; providing listings for similar but non-Angus calves is often reported as a challenge across the country.

Howdy Juniors and Parents, I would first and foremost like to say congratulations to all the juniors and their families on an excellent Kansas Angus Futurity a few weeks ago!† With just under one hundred head it proved to be another excellent show. I would also like to say welcome to all our first time KJAA exhibitors and new members; we look forward seeing you at the preview show. As we make our way through the winter months and begin preparing for the preview show, regional shows and eventually the national show I think it is important that everybody remembers what it is really about. It is about the JUNIORS. It is about creating lifelong lessons, memories and friendships for your children. Kids who grow up showing cattle have truly lived so much more than most kids their age. They are not on the streets, they are in the show ring. They are not growing up with bad peers. They are growing up with their families by their sides’ weekend after weekend, something many kids do not experience.

The stress of shows, politics, and one person’s opinion can bring out the worst in us as adults. Before we yell at another showman, another parent, advisor or simply the person closest we need to stop and think. We need to step back and look at those little kids working so hard in the show ring and simply smile. I worked the ring and I got to see first-hand the camaraderie and friendship amongst all ages. There is a true bond and friendship that is often missed behind the scenes in the barns and the makeup area. It is easy to get caught up in rule changes, who did this and who said that, but we need to start acting like adults and start worrying about who really matters.

Now that I am older and finishing up at college I realize just how much the Angus Association has given me. I have lived and seen so much more than most of the kids at my university and it is because I grew up showing cattle. These kids do not want to remember the bickering and the fighting. They want to remember the association that made them who they are. Remember all the dates and deadlines! They can be found in the green NJAA book or online at www.njaa.info. Do not forget about the Raising the Bar Conference to be held in Stillwater, Okla. Courtenay DeHoff KJAA President

In this announcement Chairman Burke stated that this will enable exhibitors to show at two major events. The 64th Annual All-American Angus Breeders' Futurity will be dedicated in the honor of the late Dr. Price Harrison, of the Angus News publication. The 64th Annual All-American Angus Breeders’ Futurity will be judged by Chad Wilson, Wilson Cattle Company, of Cloverdale, Indiana. The All-American Futurity Junior Show will be judged by Quintin Smith of Lebanon, Tennessee. For entry forms and more information, contact Ernie Bingman, Chairman, All American Angus Futurity, PO Box 397, Carmi, IL 62821, 314/308-2048. Conversations about Beef With all the work there is to do on a farm or ranch, cattle producers don’t have time to spend hours in front of a computer. It may seem ironic, but that’s why the Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) supply development team has entered into the “social media” scene. “We want to help producers get the timely news about quality-focused beef production. We’ll help them wade through all that information and point out the highlights,” says Laura Nelson, CAB industry information specialist. The Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand created a Facebook page to communicate with restaurants, retailers and consumers last February. “We soon discovered many of our fans were not just consumers, but also producers,” Nelson explains. “Although they surely appreciate the recipes and other tidbits from that side of our business, we saw this as a growing forum to share research and news updates with cow-calf producers, feeders and allied industry folks.” So, under the trademarked name Black Ink®, CAB branched into Facebook and Twitter, and most recently launched the “Black Ink with CAB” blog. “If you’ve heard some of the baby names that come out of Hollywood these days, you might think that a moniker doesn’t mean a whole lot, or have to make any sense,” the blog explains. “But out here in cattle country, we still put a bit of stock in a good name.” It’s an extension of the Black Ink column that has run in newspapers across the country for more than decade, and the color reference is not about CAB’s black hide requirement. “The message focuses on production and management ideas that can add black ink to a ranch ledger’s bottom line—as opposed to those negative, red numbers—regardless of breed, color, ranch size or history,” it says. Nelson, along with industry information director Steve Suther and assistant director Miranda Reiman, posts regular updates and inside stories. They distill the essence from interviews with beef cattle professors, market analysts and ranchers, along with new ways to think about common production happenings. Suther shares his experiences as a commercial Angus producer in the “Purpose Driven Herd” thread. “My key contribution may be writing and editing to make a direct connection with the day-to-day concerns of commercial cattlemen,” Suther says in one post. “I know what can be done, how much it costs and how long it takes. I know the risks and rewards of retained ownership. I know that we all take risks to stay in this business because, at least in most cases, we love it.” Other areas of discussion will include “At the ranch,” “On the road” and “Mythbuster Monday.” “I really encourage producers to subscribe to the blog as a way to get regular updates from us,” Nelson says. “This isn’t junk mail—it’s just an easy way to keep up on what we’re keeping up on.” Those who are already on Facebook can “like” CAB’s Black Ink page. “There are pictures from the road, regular links to quality-focused magazine and newspaper articles from all over, and interesting bits of information from our camp,” Nelson says. Following BlackInkBasics on Twitter will allow instant updates from conferences, feedlot visits, ranch tours and other production-related events. The information shared in social media is not just on the surface or a regurgitation of everything that is printed in the popular ag press, Nelson notes. “We’re using these venues to develop new content and give a behind-the-scenes

look at what our team does and how we work with producers,” she says. “Plus, it’s interactive. People can ask questions and get answers and really have a conversation.” This is a very progressive way to get information, but the fact of the matter is, it’s also one of the most convenient,” Nelson says. “It’s quick, it’s small bites and it’s pre-selected for you. If you’re looking for quality beef production information, it’s the most concise, simplest way to get that.” Visit the www.CABpartners.com homepage to find links to all of these new communication ventures. Pregnancy Testing Made Easy by Dr. Don Coover, DVM Pregnancy testing strategies using blood pregnancy tests New technologies are making life easier for producers to know what is going on with their cow herd. One of these new technologies is a blood pregnancy test called BioPryn. This test can help producers determine if their animals are pregnant, and even to know whether they are pregnant due to artificial insemination (or embryo transfer), or are pregnant because of the cleanup bull. The BioPryn blood pregnancy test detects the presence or absence of a pregnancy specific protein in blood samples. This protein is produced by the placenta that supports the fetus as it develops in the cow/heifer. Because the placenta develops in response to the fertilized egg (or embryo) implanting into the wall of the uterus, these proteins can be present as early as to 23 days after breeding, but are always present by 30 days after breeding in successful pregnancies. Producers can take advantage of this information, and by collecting blood samples for testing at the right time, know which animals conceived to AI/ET, and which will be bred by the clean-up bull. My advice is to pull blood for pregnancy tests at least 30 days after AI (25 days after embryo transfer), but not later than 21 days after turning the females in to the bull. This strategy insures that any pregnancy detected by the BioPryn test is for sure due to the AI/ET efforts. Even if the bull bred the cow/heifer the minute they were turned in together (as early as day 10), the protein from the bull breeding will not be present at day 30. It is obvious the timing of sample taking is critical. Some producers take advantage of the fact that normal cows/heifers will recycle 18 to 23 days after breeding if the AI was unsuccessful (12 to 17 days after ET). By waiting up to 2 weeks before introducing the clean up bull, they have a few extra days to pull the blood sample for testing, and are still detecting only the AI/ET pregnancies. For instance, if you AI on day one, or ET on day 7, you could turn in the bull on day 14. By pulling blood as early as day 30 (for AI) or day 31 (for ET), or as late as day 36, you would be sure none of the pregnancies detected are bull bred. The earliest the bull pregnancies should be detected is day 37 (day 14 plus 23 days for the protein to show up). Remember, when testing for bull pregnancies, the bull has to out of the pasture at least 30 days before you are confident you would detect all the bull pregnancies. In the above example, samples drawn on day 30 up to day 36 will only show pregnant if the pregnancy is due to AI or ET. A sample that is negative for the protein only means the animal is not pregnant due to AI or ET- she could be bull bred, and pregnant, but the pregnancy specific proteins are not present yet, and she shows up as open. Some producers use this test by waiting at least 30 days after pulling the bull off heifers to pull blood samples. Open heifers can be moved on to market as feeders. Other producers develop strategies to add value or simplify management by grouping heifers into calving groups. For instance, by testing all the heifers in a large group 50 to 60 days after putting the bull in, any heifers that show pregnant by the test were bred in the first 30 to 40 days of the breeding season. The producer pulls these heifers out, and groups them to sell or calve out as a group. Thirty days later, he tests all the remaining heifers. Those showing pregnant are another group. At least 30 days after pulling the bulls, he tests the rest. Those pregnant are his late calving heifers, the rest are open and go to town. He can sell any of the groups at a premium, since he knows when they were bred. By shifting the sample collection times, the groups can be made larger or smaller. Another advantage of this technology is that it helps you get a better feel for the pregnancy wastage or pregnancy loss in your herd. If you have a larger than expected number of animals known to be pregnant at 30 to 35 days, and then do not calve or calve late to the clean up bull, it alerts you to be looking for problems. In several herds, this has caused us to look for abortion problems, and to find the cause, often persistently infected BVD carriers. This test is inexpensive ($2.50/ test), easy to use, accurate, and handy. When taking samples, use clot tubes (red topped tubes), and a clean (new) needle and syringe. Supplies (the clot tubes, and 3cc syringe and needle combo) cost about

30 cents per animal. The sample needs to be around 2 cc of blood, and must be taken at least 30 days post breeding and at least 90 days after the previous calving. (If you breed an animal sooner than 60 days post calving, it is possible that the pregnancy specific protein from the previous pregnancy may still be in the animal’s system. In this case, you will need to wait more than 30 days after breeding, until at least 90 days post calving, to take the sample so any protein from the previous pregnancy is gone.) SEK Genetics has a lab at our Embryo Transfer clinic where we run the BioPryn tests (as well as other tests for Johne’s, and persistently infected BVD). The blood tubes do not have to be shipped on ice, since the protein being tested for is quite stable, but the samples should be chilled (NOT FROZEN), and packaged securely prior to shipping. Identity of the animals must be written clearly on each tube, and the paperwork with the samples should be filled out completely. The necessary paperwork for sample submission is easy to fill out and can be obtained from our office by calling, and we can mail or fax the forms, or the forms can be pulled off our website at www.sekgenetics.com. This pregnancy detection test is very accurate, safe (no palpation to injure/disrupt early pregnancies), fast (no rectal entry with ultrasound), convenient (you don’t have to haul cattle to a clinic, or schedule a visit with a veterinarian), and inexpensive. You can contact us at SEK Genetics, 9525 County Road 70, Galesburg, Kansas 66740, phone 800-443-6389, or on the web at the above address.
