Looking  back,  it  seems  natural  that  Shirley  should  have  begun  

her  artistic  career  at  an  early  age.  Her  mother  was  a  painter,  and  while  growing  up,  she  was  surrounded  with  the  tools  of  that  craft.  Her  early  fascination  with  painting  would  lead  her  first  

to  a  career  in  graphic  design,  then  to  a  continually  broadening  range  of  media  as  she  found  time  

to  explore  them,  including  computer  illustration,  furniture  design  and  work  in  metal.
