R Aqr Status of the campaign
Margarita Karovska (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) has requested spectroscopic monitoring of the mira symbiotic R Aqr in support to Chandra/HST observations scheduled October 11, 2017 (Wed) Day 284October 13, 2017 (Fri) Day 286October 14, 2017 (Sat) Day 287
After preliminary observations from Aug. 6 to Oct. 9 (see Information Letter n° 37#2017-07 Supp. 37-1) ARAS group obtained 43 spectra at resolution 600 to 14000 from Oct. 10 to Oct. 15 during the scheduled observations with CHANDRA/HST with a nightly coverage, perfectly meeting the demandMargarita Karovska: “Beautiful! Thanks all! Please continue the spectroscopy coverage.”
The results obtained are reported in this Letter.
CHANDRA/HST observations were successful, said Margarita :“The observations were completed as planned, and the data look very promising!Working on the preliminary calibration and so on.”
Further observations are required until late December at a rythm of 8/10 days

In the previous issue, fast changes of the lines profiles were shown. Are these changes real or the result of the conditions of observation?
Paolo Berardi obtained a spectrum of the object and its jets with a large slit on LHIRES III 1200 l/mm in H beta range.
The nebula and jet are highly structured and have complex velocity distributions. This could cause problems if the pointing varies between spectra, and even produce some profile variations on short intervals if the seeing var-ies (the psf can mix parts of the nebular spectrum into the stellar, I need to check on the relative intensities but it’s not im-possible on a scale of arcseconds) [...] Some sort of seeing monitoring, or extraction along the slit, would help clarify things.
The star and jet (and inner nebula) contaminate the spectrum and certainly alter the profiles depending on the seeing. For a typical seeing of 2-3 arcsec, the expected variation can be anything from around -30 to +70 km/s depending on the slit and cen-tering. The north is redshifted, the south blueshifted, and since there is also scattered light in any system it’s essential to displace the slit and obtain spectra either perpendicular to the slit direction or away from the central star (or take three spectra at different positions for reference). The star is variable on short timescale, the environment isn’t, so unless a high velocity event occurs (and that can be determined from lines other than Halpha) you can calibrate the contribution of the environment. NB: here is, again, a good reason to obtain a broad selection of lines: the Balmer decrement works in favor o the stellar contribution because of the excitation conditions, the Hbeta should have a much weaker nebular contribution than Halpha and the forbidden lines [O I] and [O III] will be different for the two regions. Comparing the wings of the profiles will permit a systematic correction for contributions.
