INTRODUCTION

As I’m sure his Celestial Wisdom realizes the deagration o the conict with the Word o Blake is not cause enough or us to

lessen our search or more advanced weaponry to deend the Conederation. In concert with the Capellan Science Foundation

and the Ministry o the Military we have identied a number o project oci that should bear plentiul ruit to the Capellan

Conederation Armed Forces.

Our development o the plasma rie provided us with a powerul new weapon which we put to good use during the

Federated Suns’ unprovoked attack on our worlds, and when combined with the BattleMech Taser oered our orces a signicantadvantage. It is this advantage our program seeks to continually revive, and now that the shadow lances are an undeniable asset

it is time to shit our ocus.

The Jihad ushered in an orgy o weapons development and, although Stone and his cronies would wish otherwise,

the Maskirovka has gained a considerable trove o technology which is even now being experimented upon at BattleMech

and vehicle manuacturers across the Conederation. New types o armor, new types o structure, even newly-enhanced

engines are being applied to prototypes on Grand Base, Sian, Capella, and Victoria, and thanks to the Strategios’ prescience in

constructing a ull-scale experimentation division on Victoria ater the damage suered several years ago—our most recent

successes have come rom there.

One aw we must be aware o in our tactics and our design philosophies is the newest-toy phenomenon: each o the major

militaries in the Inner Sphere has become overrun with new technologies in very narrow areas. Our development o stealth armor

led to nearly every class o ’Mech produced in the Conederation being redesigned to take advantage o it. The Davions have

retrotted their rotary autocannons onto almost every chassis they eld; the Steiners, heavy Gauss ries and light usion engines,

and the remnants o the Free Worlds League are overrun with extended-range lasers and more kinds o missile ammunitions than

one has time to count.

In partnership with the CSF, Ceres Metals acilities across the Conederation, but headquartered in the main ofce on

Capella, began in 3076 ar-reaching research and development projects in all aspects o military technology. Although unding

is beginning to be drawn away rom the project to support the burgeoning hostilities along the Tikonov border, many impressive

prototypes and design projects have appeared and are listed here. It is our belie that through experimentation we may uncoveradvances unknown to the Conederation’s enemies, and so we beg the Chancellor to continue unding our programs.

Most humbly and respectully,

Dr. Veronica Baxter, Capellan Science Foundation, 3079

INTRODUCTION

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK

The ’Mechs, combat vehicles, an d ghters described in Experimental Technical Readout: Liao provide players with a sampling o the various

custom designs that have arisen in the technical divisions o the military manuacturers o the Conederation. The designs eatured in this book

reect limited-run prototypes and “one-os” that have yet to reach ull actory production—and most likely never will.

The rules or using ’Mechs, vehicles and gh ters in BattleTech game play can be ound in Total Warfare, while the rules or their construction

can be ound in TechManual . However, the experimental nature o these designs also draws upon the Experimental-level rules presented in Tactical

Operations. Thus, none o the units eatured in this volume are considered tournament legal, and their use in introductory games is discouraged.Furthermore, the extreme rarity o these machines is such that none o them should occur in a BattleTech campaign as a chance encounter, but the

capture or destruction o any one o these prototypes could be potential objective or BattleTech scenarios, tracks and role-playing adventures.

verviewIn the 3020s the Raven was a source o great pride or the

pellan Conederation. One o the ew new BattleMech designs

ce the all o the Star League to reach standard production, it

s a jewel in the Conederation’s crown even i it was saddled

h substandard technology. It wasn’t until the CSF was able to

ock the secrets o the Helm memory core that the Raven was

en the technology it needed to compete on the battleeld, but

se secrets also rejuvenated the entire warmaking industry o

Successor States. Since the 3050s several upgrades have been

ormed on the base Raven chassis, but in 3078 Hellespont

ustrials revealed a new prototype Raven that mounted the

st advanced equipment yet ound on any battleeld.

Built on a cutting-edge composite rame and using an

ralight gyro to ree mass, the Raven X  is powered by an

ralight usion engine and continues the Raven-class’ long

dition o battleeld electronic warare. Outwardly the Raven X is

ilar to the stock -3L model made amous on the battleelds o

Liberation o 3057, but the insides are revamped as ar above

3050 model as it was above the 3025.

An Angel ECM replaces the older Guardian model, while a

re powerul Bloodhound active probe replaces the Beagle. standard medium lasers o the -3 L are upgraded to medium

ulse lasers, and a prototype laser anti-missile system provides

d antimissile deense. The real treat o the Raven’s arsenal,

wever, is a large twenty-tube medium range missile launcher

ted to a stolen Apollo re controls system. Given the Raven

ragility, Hellespont designers wanted to make sure it could

gage any enemy discovered rom a distance and still have time

escape.

Although the specications o the Raven X  are impressive,

ategios planners have discovered in simulation that the

tleMech is just as susceptible to damage as the 3025 model.

build osets its increases in productivity and potential: the

ralight engine is thinly armored, as is the sot composite

ucture. Most damning is the Raven’s speed, which hasn’t

reased since 3025, and is now almost slow compared to

er states’ reconnaissance BattleMechs. It seems unlikely that

Strategios will approve the Raven X  or anything more than

monstration purposes.

The ang er amongst Capellan citizens a ter the withdrawal

d destruction o the Word o Blake is at levels unseen since

Andurien invasion o the 3030s, and this atmosphere has

d a massive pool o unds and people seeking restitution

d vengeance wherever they can. In the remnants o the Liao

mmonality especially, a horde o bounty hunters have

peared, taking contracts to right old wrongs and settle old

res and prot in the doing. One o them, a ormer Capellan

ional who goes by no oth er name than Dao, pilots a customized

dicator  claimed rom a renegade MechWarrior. He is good

ough at his job—and prolic enough in taking contracts—that

s managed to outt his Vindicator  specially or his purposes.

Mask irovka was able to copy the maintenance logs or this

werul ‘Mech and extrapolated its design parameters.

Although appearing much like a conventional VND-

Vindicator , Dao’s machine is anything but. He’s taken ull

antage o the appearance o Clan technology in the area and

d his BattleMech completely rebuilt. Dao’s Vindicator uses Clan

uble heat sinks, endo steel internal structure, and erro-brousmor in addition to several weapons. This makes it extremely

d to kill, and his most recent upgrade urther strengthened its

r-invulnerability. Stripping parts rom a g raveyard o Federated

s BattleMechs, Dao replaced his engine with a compact usion

gine and his gyro with a compact gyro—making the actual

get area o his Vindicator  much smaller. Penetrating weapons

in the Vindicator ’s torso is much less likely to strike valuable

mponents, making his ‘Mech appear unkillable.

Since many o his contracts are wanted-alive bounties, Dao’s

dicator carries a BattleMech Taser in its let arm, which he uses

hut down enemy BattleMechs and vehicles so he can capture

ir pilots. I the Taser ails to cripple his enemy the PPC inside the

dicator ’s right battlest is a Clan-made weapon, hal-again as

werul as comparable Inner Sphere weapons—and Dao doesn’t

s. It was only in the last month that we managed to conrm

uator enhancement systems on both the Vindicator ’s arms—

king his aim that much more deadly.

Despite its average speed Dao’s Vindicator  is an excellent

nter-killer BattleMech. He retained its jump jets or dealing with

ain obstacles and has installed a supercharger or burst speed,

oten using this unexpected velocity to get near enough to use

his Taser. A laser anti-missile system mounted where a standard

Vindicator  carries a medium laser provides close-in deense.

Although he has reused all oers o purchase or his ‘Mech, the

Capellan Science Foundation urges the Chancellor to require the

Maskirovka to acquire this ‘Mech or disassembly and examination.

The warriors o House Dai Da Chi epitomize the warrior ethos

the Conederation they choose to show that devotion throughellence in combat above all other areas. They are known as

elite warriors o the CCAF, and as such they receive the best

equipment and support rom the Ministry o the Military.

ently, several warriors o the House have taken advantage o

surplus o technology and upgraded their ‘Mechs to more

The Ti Ts’ang has been a wildly successul BattleMech in the

pted them to be more in line with their style o combat. Already

st ‘Mech, the Dai Da Chi Ti Ts’angs now have a supercharger to

ke them even aster. Eschewing comort or utility, the cockpits

e been replaced with smaller, lighter models to make room or

supercharger.

The weaponry o the Ti Ts’ang—especially the hatchet—

always emphasized up-close ghting styles, but the Dai

Chis consider the hatchet too blunt an instrument or their

e. Seeing reports o the BattleMech lance rom the games on

aris and Westerhand, they instructed the Dai Da Chi armorers

mount lances in place o their hatchets. Warriors who triumphng weapons that require more skill earn more honor in the eyes

he Warrior House MechWarriors, and the lance has proven to

one o the most difcult weapons or a MechWarrior to master.

Two more additions improve the Dai Da Chi’s accuracy: rst,

extended-range small lasers have been replaced with small

ulse lasers. Second, a three-ton targeting computer, based on

tured Davion designs, ties all the laser weaponry together to

ke the Ti Ts’angs more accurate, and the heat generated by all

lasers will quickly ac tivate the ‘Mechs’ triple-strength myomer.

St. Ives is a world that oten suered during the Succession

rs, and the tribulations o its short-lived primacy in the St. Ives

mpact and the predations o the Jihad did little to break thisnd. During the last Word o Blake attack millions o citizens were

ed beore the Conederation Armed Forces drove the invaders

planet, and the vital actories o HildCo Interplanetary were

erely damaged. HildCo’s board o directors immediately began

uilding with assistance rom the state, but were determined

to let the same thing happen again. Programs were begun to

iy the actories even more, and improve the HildCo corporate

ense orce.

The Pillager  is one o the most imposing BattleMechs on

eld, but even a company o those massive BattleMechs

ldn’t keep the Word o Blake out. One o the HildCo managers

lly voiced a thought many had already had: walls and turrets

deter, but only a wall o re can keep the enemy rom

ssing them. To that end, the HildCo design team created two

monstration prototypes o a new-model Pillager  designed or

ic deense: the Pillager Anvil .

All o the Pillager ’s weaponry—even its trademark Gauss

es—have been removed and th e ‘Mech’s entire torso reworked.

eed, there is little to distinguish the ‘Mech’s arms rom its

sos: two huge Long Tom artillery cannons replaced the Gauss

es, which has turned the Pillager into little more than a walkinguble-turret. The sacrice o several tons o armor still let plenty,

d a laser anti-missile system embedded alongside the small

kpit will protect the Pillager Anvil s rom incoming missiles

hout the worry o ammunition depletion. As they’re intended

ely or static deense inside a perimeter, no secondary weapons

re added—just generous ammunition storage.

The two artillery cannons generate more heat—when red

andem—than even the Pillager ’s ourteen double heat sinks

compensate or, which is why two experimental coolant pods

embedded in the ‘Mech’s chest. These pods will allow the

ch to quickly recover and continue its bombardment, and it’s

emed unlikely that an enemy will survive the awesome level o

power the Pillager Anvil  can put out long enough to exhaust

coolant pods.

The two prototypes are currently being evaluated by the

dCo test team beore being presented to the Strategios or

sible sale, but it seems unlikely the CCAF will choose to

chase the Pillager Anvil —current Capellan deensive doctrine

s or a more mobile orward deense than the ‘Mech is built or.

One o the tenets o   Xin Sheng was the embodiment o

Capellan soldier as protector o the state, which succeeded

measurably to increase the MechWarrior’s already-established

e as a neo-knight o the current age. When Shengli Arms wasuilt ater the Word o Blake attack, production design teams

gan designing a ‘Mech intended to convey this image o

tection as completely as possible, using the most advanced

uipment and weaponry possible. The outcome o this project

s a prototype that just recently began eld-testing on

toria—the Dola.

In ancient Terran mythology the dola are the protective

its that embody human ate, an image that meshes very well

h the traditional MechWarrior’s role. Although only thirty tons

mass the Dola is capable o acing much heavier oes, thanks

ts advanced maneuverability and weaponry. As ast on the

und or in the air as a Marik  Spider , the Dola is designed to

ve rapidly and dispatch its enemies just as rapidly—a super-

alry unit.

Built around a composite rame and an extralight gyro, with

tons o light erro-brous armor protecting it and its pilot,

Dola is a hardy example o its weight class. Where it exceeds

weight class is in weaponry: Shengli designers mounted a

totype BattleMech-scale vibroblade on the right arm, one

the most powerul melee weapons a ‘Mech can carry. Two

ended-range medium lasers in the let arm provide respectablepower at range, but all indications are that Dola pilots would

er to close and hack their enemies to glowing bits with the

per-vibrating blade. To help keep the Dola rom being destroyed

ange, an Angel ECM suite capable o deeating nearly every

wn battleeld targeting system is included.

Four prototypes are planned, although only one has yet

ved under its own power. The other three are meant to

eriment with other weapons congurations, although early

icators rom test pilots are that the rst option is the best option.

imulated combat the Dola has already been credited with kills

nearly every common Federated Suns BattleMech, including

Axman twice its mass. Whether the ‘Mech could perorm as well

ve-re tests remains to be seen, but the Strategios has already

gned three procurement ofcers to monitor the testing.

Although we have made great strides in our understanding o the use

mineelds, we would be doing Capellan citizens a disservice i we didn’t

o make comparable advances in how we deal with mineelds ater the

tle is over. To that end, Aldis Industries recently oered a prototype

rpion light tank to the Ministry o the Military or consideration.hough a number o non-combat minesweeping vehicles already exist,

use o an established combat vehicle might reduce the logistical cost

deploying mine-clearance vehicles to our worlds.

The minesweeper version o the Scorpion is noticeably dierent

m the combat version; oremost among its dierences is the lack o

urret or cannon. Aldis removed the turret entirely and replaced the

non with two Magna ve-tube long-range missile launchers. The

ee tons o ammunition storage or these weapons is divided into two

inct magazines, with one ton o standard missiles shared or deensive

, and one ton o mine-clearance missiles dedicated to each launcher.

engineers let the anti-personnel Gatling gun as well.

Removal o the turret and cannon reed enough mass or the

rpion Minesweeper to mount a minesweeper attachment on th e ront

he tank. This shield is urther backed up by a replaceable section o

dular armor mounted on the S corpion’s bow. Although the mass o the

mor slows the tank down, no sane crew would want to speed through

mineeld so it’s unlikely that will be an issue. The additional armor,

r and above the Scorpion’s integral plating and the minesweeper’s

tection, oers signicant protection to the citizens charged with

aring the mineeld.

Aldis has produced our prototype vehicles that are currentlydergoing testing with the Betelgeuse Home Guard; early reports are

orable, although the ongoing conic ts along the Tikonov border make

nlikely the Strategios will divert unds rom needed combat vehicles to

nce a second-line chassis. In testing, one o the crews actually drove

tomized Regulator hovertank that came to the Maskirovka’s attention,

d we have included their ndings in this report as a possible avenue

explore with uture Regulator production. Only a single instance o this conversion is known to exist, but the trickle-down o the Word

Blake’s extravagant technology rewards will certainly mean more and

re o these kinds o vehicles will appear.

In hindsight it’s not as signicant a discovery as some may think: we

e been experimenting with stealth armor-equipped Regulators since

put the Lite Stealth into ull production, but it’s startling to realize that

mple mercenary company can put together the technical knowledge

essary to engineer such signicant changes. Replacing the Regulator’s

al armor with stealth armor makes or a very difcult to hit ast-

alry unit, even i the addition o the integral Guardian ECM suite did

essitate the removal o some o its protection. The armor, however, is

the truly startling par t o Alan Novak’s Regulator. It’s armament is even

re surprising.

Somewhere on the battleelds o the ormer Chaos March he and his

w located a serviceable “silver bullet” Gauss rie. Our own technicians

only now beginning to bring our prototypes on line, yet these

rcenaries have somehow acquired one and ound the means to supply

with ammunition. The Maskirovka observation team that recorded the

died Regulator in action opined that they must have located a lost

rd o Blake supply cache, which is a likely expostulation.

In combat this Regulator perormed very well, working with thercenary’s cavalry platoon to raid a Stone-aligned repair acility. Novak’s

gulator quickly outpaced its Condor escorts and laid down deadly

rom its silver bullet Gauss rie. In short order Novak had crippled a

erator Valkyrie and damaged two Myrmidon medium tanks beore

aking o and allowing the lighter-armed Condors to close and destroy

m. The mercenary company’s trailing elements—a pair o medium

tleMechs and nineteen atbed trucks—quickly sacked the repair

lity and made o with quite a bit o loot.

The Po is a mainstay o Home Guard, militia, and mercenary

es to our ormer Trinity allies, the Magistracy o Canopus and Taurian

ncordat. In act, the Concordat has been purchasing so many chassest Taurian engineers have been regularly visiting Ceres Arms’ Menke

lity to take technical training classes. One o those visiting engineers

cribed a eld-expedient repair made by Concordat technician on the

erated Suns ront. The Ceres designers were so impressed that they

ended the engineer’s stay or six months while they tinkered with a

mising new conguration based on his descriptions.

The prototype Po is expected o the line in two months, and early

ulations are quite promising. The basic autocannon is replaced with

advanced hyper-velocity model, providing quite a bit more bang or

Po’s buck. The heavy smoke generated by the HV cannon’s ring is a

ural obstacle—already Strategios planners are experimenting with

tics based on aster cavalry orces bursting through this smoke screen

apidly attack. The anti-personnel machine gun is replaced by a six-tube

eak short-range missile launcher, which still deends against inantry

acks and provides a more serious deterrent to enemy armored units.

Since the tank had to be redesigned to house a usion engine, the

es engineers took the opportunity to eld-test a new method o

mor construction based on samples provided by the Maskirovka. The

per-velocity autocannon-armed Po is also protected by experimental

dened armor; the HV cannon is enough o an investment that the

velopers wanted the strongest possible protection, and the denseting o the hardened armor is extremely tough, i mass-intensive.

Dr. Petra has remained in the Conederation despite requests

m Vandenburg Mechanized Industries to return to New Vandenburg,

ing his intention to see the new Po in eld-testing on Menke. Several

chasing ofcers rom McCarron’s Armored Cavalry have also expressed

erest in reviewing the trial results, but Ceres has stated it will not oer

The Davion invasion o the Conederation just a ter the star t o the

rd o Blake’s Jihad—dubbed Operation Sovereign Justice—illustrated

dierence in design philosophies between the standard medium

ospace ghters o the Conederation and the Federated Suns. Thensit is an attack crat, built to quickly punish its enemies and retire or

rmament, a role which it excels at. Few crat can stand the punishment o

massive Tomodzuru autocannon. The D avions’ Corsair , in comparison,

longer-ranged crat with laser weaponry designed or staying power

d reedom rom logistical tails. While one crat is not necessarily superior

n the other, part o a massive R&D campaign at Ceres Metals on Capella

voted itsel to making the Transit more capable against the Corsair .

The rst issue identied was range: the large lasers which the

sair depends on can outreach the big Tomodzuru signicantly, making

nsit  pilots ocus on evasion during their closing attack. In keeping

h the design philosophy o the Transit , Ceres designers replaced the

ocannon with an improved heavy Gauss rie captured rom Lyran

orists near Liao. This weapon, with a longer reach than the Tomodzuru

d comparable damage, makes the Transit  a greater danger at range.

supporting medium lasers are replaced with the commonly available

erse Optics extended-range models and the heat sinks upgraded to

uble-strength.

Secondly, since the most common Corsair  variants in service are all

er-armed, Ceres outtted their Transit  prototype with experimental

er-reective armor, specially designed to deeat laser attack s. Strategios

chasers who’ve attended the perormance trials are quite impressedh the armor, noting that it would stand equally well against the Stingray

hter o the ormer Free Worlds League, who since that realm’s dissolution

e became aggressively unpredictable along our border.

Despite the early buzz Ceres Metals is not expanding their production

te yet—troubles with getting the laser-reective armor into standard

duction are holding things up, according to Maskirovka reports rom

de the actory. It is unknown i the prototype program can survive long

ough or the armor issues to be worked out, and attempts to reverse

gineer the improved heavy Gauss rie have thus ar ailed. Funding is

ting tight, even on Capella, given the hostilities with Devlin Stone’s

Since the capture o Terra more and more Clansmen have been

er realms have been taking or granted, and much o it has been

supplemental lasers. Maskirovka analysts have been screaming or

Strategios to order Janko to release those weapons to the Capellan

sequent release o six large-class weapons has quieted them.

Janko’s ghter has earned quite a reputation in the still-smarting

The Word o Blake attack on the Capellan throneworld o Sian showed

k down on the planet and see the scars o the Conederation’s ounding,

en Franco Liao annihilated Capella Prime and its Davion occupiers rather

n submit to Reynard Davion.

The Lung Wang-class DropShip has been an unqualied success since

rst vessel launched. A solid workhorse vessel, equally at home as an

ault ship, escort vessel, or even ’Mech carrier, Lung Wangs are among the

st coveted vessels in the Capellan Navy, second only to the massive Feng

ang cruisers in prestige. However, when aced with the WarShips and

ket WarShips o the Word o Blake, even the Lung Wangs ared poorly. RO

gineers took much o the weaponry salvaged rom the deeated Blakist

st decorated Lung Wang in the Capellan Navy be recalled or trials.

CCS Predator  ought with distinction throughout the Jihad, acing

s Pocket WarShips on her own. Ater eighteen months in the graving

cks at RO’s new high technology annex, Predator slipped her moorings

The Blakists demonstrated clearly the power o capital weaponryplied to DropShip combat, but the prohibitive production and nancial

ts o capital missiles mak es them available only to the Conederation’s

rShips. Instead, a trio o sub-capital lasers replaced much o Predator ’s

nicantly dangerous to larger WarShips, are near-annihilators o

my aerospace crat. When joined with a triple-battery o extended

Furthermore, given the suddenness o many Blakist attacks, the

pellans placed one o the ew mobile hyperpulse generators they have

early warning a possibility no matter how ar out-system it patrols. The

Battle Armor Myomer Booster (Clan)

 verview

The Fa Shih has become synonymous with Capellan inantry

mbat teams and built a deserved reputation or excellence on

battleeld. Produced at maximum capacity since its inception,

mine-laying battlesuits have been somewhat eclipsed by

multi-purpose Ying Long (Trinity) battlesuit, but the Fa Shih’sity means that it will never be completely replaced. In an eort

close the gap between the Ying Long and the Fa Shih, Ceres

tals engineers have used captured technology to create a

monstration team o Fa Shih battlesuits.

One o the ew benets to the appearance o Clan troops

ng the Tikonov and ormer Liao Commonality borders has

en the acquisition o Clan technology. One o those troves o

hnology yielded a supply o experimental Clan battle armor

omer boosters—a sort o myomer acceleration signal circuitry

battlesuits. Ceres engineers, seeing a chance to showcase the

Shih, quickly adapted it to the Fa Shih.

The adaptation was not without cost; the new Fa Shih’s armor

tection is cut almost in hal and it loses the anti-personnel

apon mount. This loss is oset, however, by the increase in

und speed and general strength. The new myomer-equipped

Shih is just as ast on the ground as it is in jump, making it one o

most maneuverable battle suits in the Inner Sphere. It retains

magnetic clamps and minelaying equipment, which makes its

placement o tactical mineelds even more prodigious.

In simulation the Ceres Arms demonstration team has also

wed an increase in anti-BattleMech attack power, using theirhanced strength to tear even greater swaths o armor ree

h each grasp. Strategios evaluators have already indicated

ir preerence or this version o the Fa Shih, but unless Ceres

reverse-engineer the myomer booster technology, or devise

me means o trade with the Clans to acquire more, the our

s currently on Capella will be the only examples. Ceres Metals

d already made a sizable donation to the Capellan Science

Despite the eort put into the Fa Shih, a separate design

sion experimented with several suits o Ying Long battle armor

ee i its eectiveness could be increased as well. Production

he Ying Long (or Trinity, as it’s known to the rest o the Innerhere) has, in sheer numbers, eclipsed the Fa Shih but ew count

t as negative toward the specialized Fa Shih; the Ying Long is

t or more general missions.

During the Jihad it was repeatedly demonstrated that the

rd o Blake’s ease with communications—rom interstellar

ntercounty—gave them a sizable advantage over all o their

mies, so the Ceres teams attempted to create a Trinity variant

t could operate with battleeld companies to increase their

mmunication. While the battle armor-scale command, control,

d communications system lacks the dedicated master system

Mech-scale units it does greatly increase the accuracy and

mmunication o the squad mounting it.

The mass o the BC3 systems required the Ying Long’s

aponry to be downgraded to a King David light Gauss rie

apon, built rom plans stolen rom Andurien in 3077. The lighter

aponry means the squad is less dangerous individually, but the

ded accuracy rom the BC3 more than osets this in simulation.
