The website gives the follow- ing description of the organi- zation’s goals: G.I. Josie, Inc., is a startup nonprofit designed to meet the needs of our female vet- erans who are returning from deployments with Post Trau- matic Stress Disorder (PTST) and Military Sexual Trauma, and their children. Research has told us that the VA does not offer programs that help our women and chil- dren heal together, no programs that bring non- clinical therapies to the vet and child, and no programs that provide these therapies 24 hours a day, seven days a week for as long as the vet needs to heal. Josie addresses all of these chal- lenges by providing a Transitional Community Ranch in Monterey County that will provide a safe, sane and secure environment in which veterans will heal together with their children and other female veterans suffering similar traumas. It is said that no one heals a Vet like a Vet, and they will put that adage into practice. Past President Tony James continued his long string of speaker introductions. Laurabeth Messimer Lopez is the Chief Executive and Founder of G. I. Josie and her website gives the following: Laurabeth Messimer Lopez has been in the home-care industry for the past twelve years. Most recently, she managed a staff of four who administered 24-hour care for an elderly gentleman with Alzheimer’s. Prior to this, she managed the medical care and house for her elderly dis- abled father while she was attending the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to administering care for her father, Lau- rabeth worked at the local hospital in Grass Valley, managing admissions for the emergency room, before she transferred to the Accounts Receivable Department. Laurabeth is also a court-appointed special advocate (CASA) for delinquent and dependent children under the age of 18. She earned an AA degree from Col- lege of San Mateo (with honors) before trans- ferring to the University of California, Berke- ley. Ms. Messimer Lopez is currently registered with the State of California as a Notary Public, Today’s speaker Laurabeth Messimer Lopez

• GI Josie presently uses Rescue Ranch in Aromas, near Watsonville

• They seek funding for land and buildings of their own

• Currently advertising is only by “word of mouth”

• They work with the VA Administration to obtain counseling and clinical help

• Two major programs are

• The Equine Program

• The Surfing Program

• The website is www.gijosie.com

The following is a testimony by a person who was particularly blessed

by the Equine Program:

Nicholas Welzenbach was born and raised in Kansas, with three brothers and one sister. He met his wife, Kendall, at the beach in San Diego some thirteen years ago. They have two children. Nicholas comes to us from the Antioch Rotary Club, and is the Director of our local Darling- Fisher Chapel of the Hills funeral home.

"I've always wanted to learn about horses. The whole shebang like grooming, riding, cleaning up stalls, everything. It might have taken me 61 years but I finally got a chance through GI Josie. I'm learning that unspoken language be-tween horses and riders. What a magnificent animal the horse is. I look forward each week to working with the horses. As far as riding a horse I have so much to learn. There is a lot of trust between the rider and the horse that I'm just beginning to learn. What a beautiful feeling it is when a horse comes up from be-hind you and puts his head on your shoulder. Wow!” — Kat Anderson, USN Veteran
