The Vashon Senior Cen-ter, facing a $25,000 cut in funding from King County, is hosting its first auction in three years.
Willow Eaton, the center’s director, said she hopes to raise $20,000 from the auc-tion, which will be held Feb. 27. “That would get us off to a really good start,” she said.
For more than 25 years, the center was under the auspices of Senior Services, a Seattle-based nonprofit. Last year, the senior center, which wanted more local control, became a part of the Vashon Park District, a relationship that is working well, Eaton said.
But the park district doesn’t provide any fund-ing for the senior center. And while the cut in county funds has nothing to do with the shift, it underscores the center’s need to work hard to secure a strong base of
local support, said Eaton. “We’re going to have to
be really proactive in terms of our fundraising effort,” she said.
The auction promises to be a strong one, Eaton
said. The center has already secured several donations, including a holiday excur-sion to Mexico. And vol-unteers have begun selling raffle tickets for a watercol-or that seniors painted with
the help of renowned Island artist Geri Peterson.
The winning ticket will be drawn at the auction. The painting, on display at the senior center, “is gorgeous,” Eaton said.

Winner!Have you ever
traveled by Ferry?Have you ever seen
a fairy?Well that is what you will see,If you come to Vashon with me,
And many more things than that! You could see a top hat or a brown bat,
But you should come to Vashon for other reasons too,
Because there the water is blue,Because on Vashon all your wishes
will come true,But I think that you knew,
That Vashon is surely the best,On Vashon you will see birds in their nests,
You will see raccoons and squirrels,Or paintings and art maybe some murals,
But if you ask me what living on Vashon means,
I would reply “living on an island is enough but what I really like is all the greens”
Green plants and green trees,Then tree climbing and at the top you can
always feel the breeze,Sometimes you can even see the beach far away,
You will have to go there another day another way,
For now on Vashon you will stay,And peacefully quietly enjoy the beautiful day!
