Racers, The race schedule for the upcoming season is now available! Whoopee! With weather unpredictable it could change, but for now, here it is. Unhappily, this could be the last race season for the Castro Valley Ski Club. Our race team, once the best in the league, continues to dwindle. Age and changing interests have taken their toll. If you are thinking of one last chance at glory, sign up or at least show up for a race or two, just for fun. The Race Committee meets Sept 30th. Any surprises that come out of the meeting will be forwarded to racers and potential racers early thereafter. I know that I am getting excited about the upcoming race season. This could be my last, too. The weather is starting to turn. I still plan to be skiing mid-week, if my body is willing. For anyone who would like to try out racing let me know, or come on up for a weekend. Any-one can try the racecourse for a small fee that can be applied to league registration. Just be there by 8AM on race day. Watch the Open League website for the latest information – http//www.olrc.org. (no “s” with http)
(Follow the link to the new Open League website and enjoy browsing.)

Hi All,
I’m sure you are noticing the changing
color of the leaves, the crisper temperatures
in the morning and the ubiquitous pump-kins ~ and we all know what that means.
Ski season is just around the corner now ~
there is a dusting of snow at high alti-tudes in the Sierras and the Rockies, so
please keep good thoughts for colder
temperatures and more precipitation, meaning a much bet-ter season than the last one! We have been patient, but now
would like a great season, please!
To stay busy and upbeat Maggie and Ray Jong have organ-ized a Livermore bike ride, beginning and ending at Wente,
with lunch after the ride ~ yum. Thank you Maggie and
Ray for taking the initiative and volunteering for this fun day of biking and eating (and maybe even a little wine
drinking). Maggie and Ray are what I would call super-
volunteers. Along with organizing this bike ride, Maggie is our VP of Membership and Ray is our Webmaster ~
when next you see them give them a little “Thank You”!
It is really volunteers like Maggie and Ray that make Cas-
tro Valley Ski Club a viable Club.
I hope you will all be thinking about your contribution to
our annual Auction on Wednesday, November 19. This is your chance to get creative with your auction items and
show off a cool skill or hobby, etc. The auction is always
a lot of fun ~ you will see if you join in and donate an
item and purchase an item donated by other members. Some of the best rewards come later when you get to col-
lect on those auction items that you bought in November.
Also, ask Ron White about the Land’s End Castro Valley
Ski Club logo items that he has been working on with
Land’s End ~ you will find a nice assortment of apparel to show your Club pride and they’re practical, too. Thanks,
Ron, for arranging all this.
So, I hope everyone enjoys this wonderful Autumn season and that anticipation for the coming ski season doesn’t get
too overwhelming!!
Karen
This month I have some exciting
news from the BAC.
Granite Chief (in Truckee) is having
a Team Day on October 11. They
will be offering this year's RAC-
ING skis at Pro-form prices (30-
40% off). You just need to men-
tion that you race for BAC. This is for RACE skis
only, not recreational skis. In addition, you can get
any equipment (not necessarily race related) at the
same discount. This includes boots, poles, helmets,
and race-related equipment like race suits, shin guards
and arm guards.
But what’s all this without the right weather? Will EL
NINO be around? Strong El Nino’s have been associ-
ated with storm systems hitting the coast and moun-
tains of California bringing heavy rains to the coast
and heavy snowfalls to the Sierra Nevada. A majority
of models and the multi-model averages favor a weak
El Nino according to the latest report. At this time, the
consensus of forecasters give El Nino a 60 – 65%
chance to emerge during September-October and to
peak at weak strength during the late fall and early
winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and to continue
into early 2015. (As reported by the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and their
funded institutions. To receive an e-mail notification
when the monthly ENSO Diagnostic Discussions are
released, send an e-mail message to: ncep.list.enso-

We had one cabin become available for this trip.
Oct. 28 – Nov. 13, 2015
Limited to 48 includes air from LAX or SFO
Pre-trip to Bangkok - $399
Post-Trip to Inle Lake, Myanmar - $1099
Myanmar, formally Burma, is a hot destination and for two reasons: firstly, the door has been
opened on a piece of Asia that has been isolated from the pressures of development (and, indeed,
tourism) for five decades; and secondly, it offers so much to the traveler it is hard to know where
to begin. The country has all the beauty of Thailand's coastal and mountain regions but only a
fraction of it has been seen by outsiders. Myanmar is truly a "last chance to see"
(Malaysia/Thailand 30 years ago, Vietnam 15 years ago,
Cambodia 10 years ago - take your pick).
We will be on a DELUXE Riverboat for 10 days.
There are different categories of cabins depending on the deck
level. We have reserved the WHOLE boat for our group.
Here are the prices WITH air from either LAX or SFO
Irrawaddy Suite B2 -2 cabins - $5652
Maugham Suite B1 - 8 cabins - $5852
Orwell Suite - 16 cabins - $6052
Call for more info.

Safe Bicycling Safety Facts and Tips
Bicycling is one of the most popular ways to get around, whether for recreation, sport or transportation. An estimated 73 to 85 million Americans ride bikes ranging from high performance, 18-speed, touring models, to "dirt bikes" equipped with balloon tires—and dozens of variations in between. With millions of cyclists on the roads—the same roads occupied by millions of motor vehicles that are larger, heavier and faster than bikes—the National Safety Council believes that defensive driving applies to people who pedal with their feet to travel, as well as to those who push on the gas pedal. In 2012 approximately 4,743 pedestrians and 726 bicyclists were killed in crashes with motor vehicles. st unintentional injuries. The Council offers the following tips for safe and enjoyable bicycling:
Starting July 2014, drivers must allow a distance of three feet when passing a bicyclist. The California Highway Patrol says the easiest way to figure out how long that is would be imagining your legs sticking out of the window. If you’re close enough to kick a cyclist, then you’re too close.Obey traffic rules. Get acquainted with ordinances. Cyclists must follow the same rules as motorists.
Know your bike's capabilities. Remember that bicycles differ from motor vehicles; they're smaller and can't move as fast. But, they can change direction more easily, stop faster and move through smaller spaces.
Ride in single file with traffic, not against it. Bicycling two abreast can be dangerous. Bicyclists should stay as far right on the pavement as possible, watching for opening car doors, sewer gratings, soft shoulders, broken glass and other debris. Remember to keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
Make safe turns and cross intersections with care. Signal turns half a block before the intersection, using the correct hand signals (left arm straight out for left turn; forearm up for right turn). When traffic is heavy and the cyclist has to turn left, it is best to dismount and walk the bicycle across both streets at the crosswalks. .
Before riding into traffic: stop, look left, right, left again, and over your shoulder.
Always be seen. During the day, cyclists should wear bright clothing. Nighttime cycling is not advised, but if riding at night is necessary, retro reflective clothing, designed to bounce back motorists' headlight beams, will make cyclists more visible.
Make sure the bicycle has the right safety equipment: a red rear reflector; a white front reflector; a red or colorless spoke reflector on the rear wheel; an amber or colorless reflector on the front wheel; pedal reflectors; a horn or bell; and a rear view mirror. A bright headlight is recommended for night riding.
Wear a helmet. Head injuries cause about two-thirds of all bicycling fatalities. The Council strongly urges all cyclists to wear helmets. The first body part to fly forward in a collision is usually the head, and with nothing but skin and bone to protect the brain from injury, the results can be disastrous. .
A properly designed helmet has four characteristics:
A stiff outer shell designed to distribute impact forces and protect against sharp objects
An energy-absorbing liner at least one-half inch thick
A chin strap and fastener to keep the helmet in place
It should be lightweight, cool in hot weather and fit comfortably
There is no limit to the fun and exercise gained from bicycling. Being careful will give riders safer trips and a greater peace of mind.
BE CAREFUL Sandy Beecher
