    Nutrition Info

Fact or Fiction? With so much nutrition news avail-

able it’s hard to know what to believeor whom to trust. Is the informationunk or genuine science? And what

does a healthy plate look like in thefast-food age? Registered dietitiansare trained nutrition experts, skilledn translating science and nutri-

tional information into practical andhealthy eating plans to help you makehealthy choices. Registered dietitianswork in a variety of places: hospitals, community health centres, long-termcare, schools. Others are employedbehind the scenes and inuencewhat we eat every day. Public healthprograms, food policy, food productdevelopment and menu developmentare just some of the areas where theywork. You might even nd a dietitianat your sport club, your gym or atyour grocery store.

What sets registered dietitiansapart in our province is that they areregulated by the College of Dietitians.Tis means that they are accountableto deliver safe, competent and ethicalnutrition services. It also means that ifyou have concerns about the servicesyou received from a dietitian, you cancall the college for help. Te college

regulates the profession to make sureyour registered dietitian meets highpractice standards and can providequality nutrition care to help youand your family eat better. Check theRegister of Dietitians online at www.mydietitian.ca to make sure yournutrition expert is registered.

WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS!

    • Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes. What details would youwant to know about an item you were interested in buying?

    • Include the brand name (manufacturers spend mil-lions promoting the name and enhancing the imageof their products, so take advantage of it). Would yourather buy a refrigerator or a Frigidaire?

    • List the item’s best features and what makes youritem different from others in the same category. (Re-

member, the more you tell, the clearer picture a poten-tial buyer gets, making it easier for you to sell.)

    • Take time to research pricing for your article so thatyou price it reasonably (overpriced items may not re-ceive calls).

    • Include your phone number and the best times to call.• Ask for the sale...one gentleman put “BUY THIS CAR!” in his

ad and was pleasantly surprised by the response to his ad!

    Open House At Meadow Creek

Fall is around the corner and it’s that “redd” time of yearagain; not the colour of the leaves, but when the Kokaneehead up local streams and rivers to dig their redds (gravelnests) and spawn. And Meadow Creek Spawning Chan-nel, at the north end of Kootenay Lake, is a great place toview them, especially during the free, annual Open Housebetween 10 a.m. and 2 pm, on Saturday, September 12.

Te channel is managed by the Ministry of Forests,

Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO), andprimarily funded by the Fish and Wildlife CompensationProgram (FWCP). It is located about four kilometers westof Meadow Creek.

Te Open House provides a great opportunity to talk toFLNRO biologists and eld technicians, and view the shat (or near) the peak of their run. Tere will also be infor-mation about Grizzly Bears, BearSmart, and the NutrientRestoration Program in Kootenay Lake.

“Typically there are tens of thousands of spawning

Kokanee to be viewed together each year,” said FWCPColumbia Region Manager, Crystal Klym. “And it isalways quite an amazing site.”

Te 3.3 kilometer looping channel, built in 1967 withBC Hydro funds to compensate for upstream spawn-ing habitat lost due to the construction of Duncan Dam,can accommodate several hundred thousand spawningKokanee, and millions of eggs in the gravel.

Te channel is open to the public every day between 10am and 2 pm for the duration of the spawning season thatusually runs from late August through to late September.

With the congregating Kokanee, the channel attracts bothBlack and Grizzly Bears, and FLNRO may order a tem-porary total closure to the public if there are high beardensities during the regular open hours.

Te FWCP is a partnership between the Province of BC,BC Hydro, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, First Nationsand Public Stakeholders to conserve and enhancesh andwildlife impacted by the construction of BC Hydro dams.

For more information about the Open House, and anypossible temporary closures, phone 250-354-6333.

Major Improvements ToSalmo Park Under Way

Two and a half years afer the old structure was removedfor safety reasons, the children of Salmo will enjoy a newplayground in Knights of Pythias Park. Te playground –and several other park upgrades totalling $100,000 – hasbeen made possible in part by a grant of $65,000 fromColumbia Basin Trust. Other contributors include theRegional District of Central Kootenay, Western Financialand the Village of Salmo.

“Te children of Salmo will once again have a commu-nity playground,” said Mayor Stephen White. “Tanksto the dedication and cooperation of residents, councilmembers, and our chief administrative offi cer who cametogether to secure funding that will allow this communityvision to become a reality.Te new playground would nothave been possible without the support of the ColumbiaBasin Trust.”

Knights of Pythias Park is the main park in the Vil-age of Salmo and the heart of community activity, spe-

cial events, sports and outdoor gatherings. Te plannedmprovements will substantially upgrade the facilities,

amenities and grounds of the park to meet the needs ofthe community, residents and visitors of all ages.

Specic improvements include the installation of a newplayground, maintenance and upgrades to the ball eldsand dugouts, sand and waterlines to the campsites, con-cession stand design and the preparation of a master planfor the park.

is project is a great examp e o teamwor , sai Ke - vin Saldern, community liaison, Columbia Basin Trust.“Over 50 concerned community members came togetherto form a parks working group, which then worked withthe local chamber of commerce and the village. Even thechildren got directly involved by voting on which play-ground design they prefer.”

Upgrades should be complete in the fall of this year.

FOMO Or Fear Of Missing OutFOMO  or “Fear of Missing Out” is a fun social media

term, but when it comes to pressures on the wallet duringback-to-school time, FOMO looms large for both studentsand parents – but in a much diff erent way. For students,it’s the fear of missing out on trips or activities with theirfriends. For parents, it’s making sure their children don’tmiss out on making good decisions. So how are these inter-ests balanced?

“With back-to-school approaching, it is a good timefor each party to have a conversation about needs versuswants,” says Mandy Mail, director of student banking atRBC Royal Bank. “FOMO has very real eff ects on studentbudgets, but setting priorities can mean smart choices andgreat results.”

Mandy off ers the following tips to help students meetboth the needs and wants:

    • Make a list – Jot down all of your needs such as books, food, and transportation plus the sociated costs. Separately, create a column for ‘wants’ like clothing, trips, or a new

computer. Pick a few items on the wants list that t intoyour budget and create a savings plan to tackle others.

    • Evaluate your choices – If you’re considering a trip overspring break that maybe doesn’t quite t the budget, weighboth sides of the equation and make a decision that tswith your current and future needs.

    • Shop smart – If you’re on a budget, one way to avoidmissing out is comparing prices. You may even be able toadd in another want to your wish list. Shop responsibly andbuy based on need, not just want.

    • Get the most out of your credit card – Find a credit cardthat suits your needs. For example, there are credit cardsthat off er cashback options which allow you to earn cashon your everyday purchases. Tere are also cards that letyou earn and redeem points for gif cards and merchandise.

More information on back-to-school nances is availableat www.rbc.com/studentsolution, #RBCStudentAdvice onTwitter, or at any branch. More on the rewards program scan be found at www.rbcrewards.com.
