pFor over ten years, generous Kaslo folk have been sup-

porting a special needs school in Barra De Navidad, Mex-ico where 50 mentally and/or physically challenged youthattend daily classes.

While it is a Government school, the only nancial/

physical help given by the government is in the payment ofthe teachers’ salaries, everything else needed to operate theschool including a bus and driver, hot meals for students,supplies and utilities must be found f rom other sources.

Te eye of Hurricane Patricia passed within 23 kilome-ters of the school and area and as the school was damaged,the concern is now for the students whose parents are askedto pay a small weekly fee to keep the school operational.

Most parents are either subsistence farmers who havecompletely lost their crops or their work as labourers,shermen with useless or damaged boats, or maids in themodest accommodations which also have been damagedand are not employed now, obviously the students will notbe sent to school thus endangering not only their educa-tion but their social interaction.

Social Dance Society RevivedWe’re back! At a recent AGM of the Kootenay DanceBeat Society (KDBS) a new board of directors was formed

The new slate comprises: Danny Rondeau, presi-dent; Sandra England, vice president; Deb Corbett,reasurer; Jude Milne, secretary along with four direc-ors at large: Evan McKenzie, Maria Baula-Schuh, Fran

allis and Martha Stokoe. Ingrid Love is the society’south liaison person.

Tis enthusiastic and multitalented team is looking torovide more regular social dance opportunities, in theelson area. To kick off their tenure, a Social Dance and

Membership Drive event is set for Saturday, November 21at the newly refurbished Taghum Hall. Entry to this DJ

event will be $10, which will include the Annual Member-ship fee to the nonprot society.

Te primary goal of the society is to provide frequentopportunities for people of all ages to learn new dances,

ractice their dance skills, meet new people and socialize.“Society events provide a wonderful place to make newfriends, get exercise and have fun, all at the same time,”says Past President Fran Wallis.

Everyone is welcome to attend on November 21. Teevening will get underway at 6:30 pm with a potluck ofsnacks and appies, followed by a beginner/intermediateSwing mini lesson and social dancing until 11 pm. Temusic will include a good mix of Latin, Smooth, Swingand a little bit of Country.

Future society plans include an offi cial launch partywith live music, to celebrate the society’s new year. Mem-bers’ benets include discounts on the live band eventsand sponsored instructional workshops as well fosteringsocial dancing in the area.
