Welcome to the 23rd AnnualCastle Park OldTown FestivalThe Old Town and the Newarke are a uniquely rich legacy from the City'shistoric past. I am delighted to announce the welcome return of public accessto Leicester Castle, the Magazine Gateway andWygston’s House with toursand activities at each site.
The theme of this year’s festival will be Kings and Queens of England in celebration ofThe Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, during which Leicester had the honour of being the firstcity she visited on her year-long tour of the country.
Leicester’s many royal connections will be highlighted with walking tours, lectures andexhibitions, including the highly popular Hidden Gems tours. The Royal associationsof Leicester Castle demonstrate its importance in medieval times, when Leicester wasa thriving market town and government centre.
The Cathedral will host its second Food Fair and will also be the setting for the festival’sheadline concert with the wonderful Emily Barker and The Red Clay Halo. This is one ofthe many venues in the area hosting evening entertainment.
There are all kinds of children’s activities, for instance at Newarke Houses Museum,TheGuildhall, JewryWall Museum and St. Mary de Castro Church and the festival is part ofLeicester’s ‘BigWeek’, with activities for all the family. The Bank Holiday Monday familyday at Castle Gardens features historical re-enactments, walk about ‘Royal characters’,live music, arts, crafts and food stalls, boat rides, children’s circus and theatre activitiesas well as the ever popular maypole dancing.
