The recent Sandbanks, Whitefield and High Peaks event have shown yet again the extent and range of opportunities that NSVC members take part in to play and learn as much volleyball as possible. What is great to hear from those that went to these events is the fantastic level of play, enjoyment and behaviour from our young players – it really is a testament to all involved that around 70 ‘Castle members have been away on residential trips to either competitions or training camps in July!

Keep enjoying your volleyball and making the most of your opportunities!

Beach Volleyball hits South Cheshire!!The first week of August Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) Cheshire played host to the top women’s Beach Volleyball pairing from the Pacific Island of Vanuatu as they attempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The countryside between Stoke-on-Trent and Crewe around 50 miles from the nearest beach may be a long way from the island paradise of their homeland, but the players are being well prepared on a temporary beach court put together as part ofCheshire’s bid to host pre-2012 training camps. Under the watchful eyes of three time Olympic coach Steve Anderson and Australian coach Lauren McLeod the Vanuatu pair of Henriette Iatika and Miller Elwin are preparing for the forthcoming SWATCH FIVB World Tour events in Norway, Finland and Holland during August 2010 with a strict training regime which includes a three hour practice session every day this week involving young players from Newcastle (Staffs) Volleyball Club whichis based nearby.

Whilst the Vanuatans can boast being the reigning Oceania champions having won the gold medal at the championships in Tonga in 2008, the local players have some beach volleyball pedigree of their own having recently trained for and competed atthe recent Volleyball England Beach Tour event at Sandbanks in Dorset, and junior player Megan Viggars (age 16 from Wolstanton) competed in Beach Volleyball for Team GB at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

The link with the club came about through Dr Nick Smith, from the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at MMU Cheshire who is also a former Head Coach at Newcastle (Staffs) Volleyball Club. As the club’s Junior Head Coach Will Roberts explains, “Nick is in regular contact with our club and when this opportunity came up for our players it was too good to miss. What better for aspiring young players than training with a team that is trying to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. Cheshire is a long way from the Copacabana or even Horse Guards Parade where the Olympic Beach Volleyball takes place, but for these young players there is no better place to be right now!”

Sponsor Will!!To support the under 18 boys trip to the European Cup in Italy, Will Roberts is running the Robin Hood ½ Marathon on Sunday 12th September. “I’m aiming for £500 for the lads – the club is putting in a significant sum of money to help them, but it still a few hundred pounds each. I have done a decent amount of training in recent months including 12.5miles the other week which was my last ‘long run’ and I managed that in 1 hour 42 mins, so I should do it in under 2 hours! Not looking forward to men’s1st team training the next day though!”

Roman make it to the Olympics (or at least to the

Olympic Park!)As part of his role as Champion Ambassador for the Sainsbury’s UK School Games, ‘Castle’s Roman Neveykin recently went on a visit to the Olympic Park in Stratford, London.

This was organised by the Youth Sport Trust, the company that runs the Sainsbury’s UK School Games and saw Roman not only visit the venues but also take part in a debate about the future of the UKSGs chaired by former Sports Minister and President of the UKSG Richard Caborn.

Roman is pictured below with Richard Caborn, with the Olympic Stadium in the background!

My Perfect teamIf you would like to nominate your own perfect 6 please do so as soon as possible! Please remember that this is your newsletter so you need to contribute by emailing your selection to Will Roberts on [email protected]

Remember, it doesn’t have to be a ‘Castle team but could be from anything you fancy, for example an international team, or best ever NVL side etc!

NSVC links with City of Stoke-on-Trent 6th

Form CollegeFor the past 4 years NSVC has developed a fantastic relationship with City of Stoke-on-Trent College in Fenton, seeing the growth of the Talented Athlete Programme (TAP) at the college to provide three training session per week for players. In 2010-11 we will continue to work closely with the college to further develop this programme which is unique in North Staffordshire, to provide daily opportunities to train through a partnership between club and college. Whilst many ‘Castle Juniors will always opt to attend other colleges, the 6th Form College in Fenton is the only one with this formal link to the club, and is the only place where players will get the chance to train on a daily basis locally.

Junior Boys Head Coach Will Roberts said, “The link with Fenton is fantastic for our young players. I did my ‘A’ Levels there back in 1998-2000 and only wish I’d had the chance to train for volleyball at college as often as they now offer through TAP. It wasn’t until I started my degree at Loughborough that I got anywhere near the quantity of training needed to play at a decent level so I hope that by strengthening the link to Fenton we are able to help our young players progress and keep up to speed with their studies.”

Where did you go on holiday this summer?? Why not take your ‘Castle top with you and get a photo wearing it at a tourist landmark... The Eiffel Tower, the Coliseum in Rome, the Great Wall of China, or the beach in Ibiza!!

To get the ball rolling here’s a snap of Will Roberts with ‘Castle old boys Neil Masters and Si Ibbotson outside the stadium for the semi-finals of the men’s Olympic Volleyball competition in Athens in 2004!

From the 15th – 20th September the boys under 18 team will be in Italy competing in the first ever CEV European Cup for junior club teams! The lads won their entry by virtue of becoming national champions in April, but only found out about this event in mid-July – so a manic few weeks of preparation have followed!

This is the second time that ‘Castle teams have represented England internationally, after club chair Colin Roberts took the u19 boys to the World Schools Championships in Israel in 1984... Where the finished 4th

overall!!!

This time round the age rules are slightly different to the domestic event, so Adam Bradbury and Andy Saward have been added to the squad, giving more strength, power and physical presence in what is likely to be a big hitting and blocking competition. Sadly Chris Ashton and Sam Shenton were ruled out through injury, Kacper Stefanowizc is away in Poland and Alex Liebeck has school Olympics so there are some of our main players missing, but this gives a great opportunity to younger players such as Jordan Adelburgh as 2nd setter who should thrive in the opportunity!

The opposition teams are truly top class, with the Italian side Lube Banca Marche –Macerata installed as pre-event favourites. Their senior men’s squad plays in the top Italian senior league in front of regular crowds of thousands of spectators! www.lubevolley.it

Fellow Italians Trentino’s men’s first team are in the Champion League this year and are also highly tipped along with the Polish and Slovakian teams.www.trentinovolley.it

‘Castle memories...The under 18 boys’ trip to Italy in September has caused club chair Colin Roberts to take a trip down memory lane into ‘Castle’s past! Digging out a range of old photos from days gone back, Colin takes us through some of the big moments in the club’s past... Including the only ever previous venture into international volleyball, back in 1984!

1984 blazer/sweater badge

1984 U/19 National Champions, without Carter, Astley, Coomer... The team that went on to take on the world in Israel!

1984 Four Newcastle boys for England - all Marshlands, including Alex Irvine on right (he came to our 30th), and Simon Ward the captain (now a parent at Dave Lovell's school in Burton!)

Israel 1984 Good Luck card to Head coach Colin Roberts from his son’s Matt and Will who were aged 4 and 2 at the time!!!

Page 12: 'Castle News 48, August 2010

‘Castle memories...The team had to raise £4500 to go to the event in Israel... In 1984 that was a seriously large amount of money, so article like this one were aimed at helping the fundraising effort!

Marshlands (now Wolstanton High School) win the boys u15 National title for the 4th successive year.

Below, the winning team for the 4th successive year (‘Castle!!) of the National u13 Championships. The photo at the bottom of the page shows the hugely successful National U/13 Championships, which Colin organised with Barrie J and the North Staffs Volleyball Association, starting in 1980.

Between 34 and 56 teams participated, from all over England, as this Champs grew. We(Marshlands) won it in the four years that Colin coached the boys, in 1980, '81, '82, '83, before leaving for Blythe Bridge.

This was the most successful venture Colin had initiated (his words!), it was eventually discontinued with the demise of the E.S.V.A.

‘Castle memories...

Marshlands (now Wolstanton High School) in National Cup final action in 1982!

‘Castle memories...

Some momento’s from the Israel trip – Colin’s ID card for the event to get into venues, accommodation etc, the event logo and some fantastic scribbled notes by the head coach after his team had beaten the Dutch and the Danish teams to reach the semi-finals versus Spain... What happened in that match? Why not ask the man

himself when you next see him
