Thisfirststepwillstripawayanyoldgunkandseasoningssothatyoucanapplyanewpre-seasoningtotheskillet’sbaremetal.

MaterialsNeeded• Rubbergloves• Eyeprotection• Adisposablepaperrespiratormask• Aspraybottlefilledwitha50/50solutionofvinegar&water(youdon’tneed

much—about¼cup)• 130-gallonkitchentrashbag• 142-gallonheavy-dutytrashbag• 1canof“Easy-Off”heavy-dutyovencleaner(READTHEOVENCLEANER

INSTRUCTIONSANDSAFETYPRECAUTIONSBEFOREUSING)

1. Openbothtrashbagsthenspreadthe30-gallonbagoutonthefloorofalevelandwell-ventilatedarea(adriveway,forexample)tomakeaflatworksurface.

2. Placetheskilletuponyourworksurfacethenremoveanylabelsorstickersif

you’restrippinganewproduct.

3. Putonyourrubbergloves,yourrespirator,andeyeprotectionandCAREFULLYspraytheskilletliberallyandevenlywiththeEasy-Offovencleaner.Then,fliptheskilletandrepeattheprocessuntiltheentireskilletiscompletelycoveredinovencleaner.

4. Transfertheskillettotheheavy-dutytrashbag,thencloseupthebagandstore

itinasafe,well-ventilatedareafor24to48hours.NOTE:Youmayneedtorepeatthesestepsonceortwicetocompletelyremoveoldseasonings.

5. Discardthe30-gallontrashbag,spritzyourgloveswiththevinegar/water

solutiontoneutralizeanyadheredovencleaner,andsetthemasideforlateruse.

CLEANYOURCASTIRONSKILLET

Nowthatyou’vestrippedyourskilletfreeofgunkandoldseasonings,it’stimetoscrubitcleanwithsoap,water,andvinegartoneutralizeanyremainingovencleaner.

Materialsneeded• #0000steelwool• Dishsoap• Asmallbowlfilledwitha50/50solutionofvinegar&water• Afewpliesofheavy-dutypapertowel• 2heavyshowertowels

1. Putonyourrubbergloves,transferyourskillettoakitchensink,andrinseitfreeofovencleanerandanyparticulates.

2. Usingdishsoapandsteelwool,scrubawayanyremainingstuck-onseasoning

fromtheskillet.

3. Useyourpapertoweltothoroughlyscrubtheskilletinthevinegar/watersolutiontoneutralizeanyremainingovencleaner.

4. Usesteelwoolanddishsoaptocleanthevinegar/watersolutionfromthe

skilletthenrinseitclean.

5. Lay1showertowelacrossacountertop,thenimmediatelytransfertheskillettothetowelanddryitquicklyandthoroughly,usingtheothertowelifneededtoavoidanypotentialflashrust.

PRE-SEASONYOURCASTIRONSKILLET

Onceyou’vethoroughlycleanedanddriedyourskillet,itstimetopre-seasonit.Thepre-seasoningisathinprimerofoilthatwillprotectthemetalfromrustorstuck-onfood.

Materialsneeded• CriscoShortening• “Scott”brandheavy-dutypapertowels• 1pairofovenmitts

1. Adjustyourovenracktothemiddlepositionthenpreheattheovento200°for30minutes.

2. Puttheskilletintheovenfor15minutes.

3. Taketheskilletoutoftheoventhenuseapapertoweltoapplyshortening

liberallytoeverypartoftheskillet.

4. Withanewpapertowel,wipetheinteriorandexterioroftheskilletcleanofanyshortening.NOTE:Eventhoughyou’rewipingit,thereisstillatraceofoilleft.Thegoalhereistoallowathinresidueofoiltopermeatetheporesoftheskillet,whileremovinganyexcess.

5. Puttheskilletupside-downontheovenrackthenpreheattheovento300°for

15minutes.

6. Removetheskillet,anduseacleanpapertoweltowipeitsinteriorandexteriordownagain.

7. Returntheskilletupside-downthemiddleovenrack,settheoven’s

temperatureto400°,andleaveitfor2hours.

8. Turntheheatoff,andleavetheskilletintheoventocoolcompletely.Whentheskillethascompletelycooled,repeatthepre-seasoningprocess2moretimes.

Don’tworry—thissteponlytakesafewminutes.It’simportanttoseasonyourskilletaftereveryuse.Overtheyears,eachnewlayerofoilwillfusetothemetalandpolymerizetocreateanonsticksurface.

Materialsneeded• CriscoShortening• “Scott”brandheavy-dutypapertowels• 1pairofovenmitts

1. Heatyourskilletoverlowheatfor3-5minutes,thenuseapapertoweltoliberallycoattheentiresurfacewithshortening.

2. Useadrypapertoweltowipetheskilletfreeofanyexcessoilthenreturnittotheheatanother2minutesbeforecoolingandstoring.

Withproperuseandcare,yournewlyrestoredcastironskilletwilleventuallydevelopalustrousblackpatinaandasurfaceslickerthananynon-stickproductonthemarket,andbestofall,itwilllastalifetime!

AGUIDEFORPROPERUSEANDCARE• Alwayspre-heatyourskilletonlowheatfor2-5minutesbeforeusing.

Note:Thisensuresheathasbeenevenlydistributedbeforeuse.
