We are coming to the end of another great year. I hope you enjoy SUDS as we close on what we feel has been a very entertaining mix of shows. As you experience the performance, think about what it takes to put up a season of shows and the dedication of every volunteer involved. From the people passing out flyers to promote, to the Director sharing their vision, all give freely of their time to bring a passion to life and hope to spark the same passion in you. You can be a part of this by becoming a Playhouse member.

We are proud to announce an incredible 2014 season, with not only two really big musical productions, but we’ve added a youth theatre camp in the spring, a young audience performance in the summer and a holiday show in December. I am asking for your support, at whatever level possible and you can specify what show you would like your donation to support, starting with SUDS!

Membership helps secure the future of affordable live theatre in San Diego. You can feel good knowing your Membership donations help support not only the shows but also our continued efforts to educate, offer a venue for local playwrights, actors and theatre enthusiasts. Please give today.

We are sincerely grateful to those who have donated to SUDS so far:

Have fun, and don’t forget to sing along,

Katy Skyrud Managing Director

Director’s Notes“We can work it out….”The early 1960s existed in a climate of high idealism. There was the sense that we could make a beautiful world, a much better and compassionate world. There was an atmosphere that anything was possible, that we could create a better society. It is during the backdrop of this time period that SUDS takes place. SUDS is a celebration of that innocence and idealism, and a celebration of friendship – the ability to come together for the common good, communicate, and resolve issues without resorting to sarcasm and vitriol. SUDS is hopeful, silly, and big-hearted. It celebrates a moment in time when life is full of possibility, and the future is wide open. Many thanks to the talented people who helped bring this show to fruition. This production has been a labor of love, and I have been blessed with an exceptional cast, musicians, and crew to bring this show to life. I hope you enjoy the time you spend with us as much as we enjoyed creating this experience for you.And a special thanks to Steve Gunderson for his insight, friendship, advice, and time he spent re-arranging songs to accommodate our vision.Enjoy! Nick Reeves

A Brief History of SUDSBefore Mamma Mia, before Forever Plaid, there was SUDS. Homegrown in San Diego, it went on to break box office records at the Old Globe Theatre before moving Off-Broadway. For decades it has continued to be produced all over the United States and Canada, on tour, and in Australia. When good friends Melinda Gilb, Steve Gunderson, Bryan Scott, and Will Robertson created what was probably the first book-driven ‘juke box musical’ for a short run at the San Diego Rep in 1986, along with its original choreographer, the critically acclaimed Javier Velasco, and original costume designer, the Tony Award-winning Gregg Barnes, little did they know the show would go on to have dozens of productions worldwide.Over the years, SUDS cast members have included Tony Award-winner Alice Ripley (Next To Normal), Megan Hilty (Smash), Gwen Stewart (Rent), and many others.

Cindy Alfonso (Cherub 2/Backup Singer/Dancer) is thrilled to be making her local theater debut at the Coronado Playhouse. For the past 20 years, Cindy has been performing the role of teacher for the PUSD. She is grateful to have the

opportunity to work with the talented cast of SUDS! Cindy would like to thank her family: Mom, Dad, Jerry, and Resie for their unending support, and especially her hubby, Rob, for his love and encouragement. Her favorite role is being mom to her sweet and handsome son, AJ. Enjoy the show!

Ria Carey (Marge) is happy to put on Marge’s wings again after playing the role in the National Tour of SUDS. She has performed for the USO with some of San Diego’s finest bands, and has a fun, bawdy nightclub act with Don LeMaster and Rick

Rutti. Other fave roles include Mama Morton (Chicago), Mazeppa (Gypsy), and April O’Neill (National Tour of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Onstage and off, Ria never refuses hugs, dark chocolate, flowers, and wishes. Love and blessings to my family, friends, cast, crew, and our lovely audience. Fluff your wings and get ready to fly – Enjoy!

Stephanie Hable (Cherub 1/Backup Singer/Dancer) is very excited to be making her debut appearance at the Coronado Playhouse in this production of SUDS! A San Diego native, Stephanie grew up doing youth theatre downtown and

in East County. She graduated from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, with her degree in Theatre Management, and has returned to her hometown to begin her career. Her new

focus is the business behind the stage but her passion for the stage continues. Some of her favorite roles include Eponine (Les Misérables), Iola Stover (Parade), and Jack’s Mom (Into the Woods).

Eliana Payne (Cindy) is overjoyed to have the surreal opportunity of working alongside such a lovely and breathtakingly talented cast in SUDS. Previous credits include: Brenda/Gym Coach (Hairspray), Lee (Bye Bye Birdie), Tiger Lilly (Peter Pan), Kaa

(The Jungle Book), Narrator (Charlotte’s Web), Lucy (You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown), The Cat (HONK! Jr.), Dorothy (The Wizard of Oz), and Alana (The Little Mermaid). She would like to thank Ms. Anna for her love and guidance; Rick, Nick, Michael, and Sven for their constant encouragement and support; and God for this amazing opportunity.

A special shout out to the amazing Will Robertson who brought together the original SUDS team of lifelong friends, and a special thank you to Brent Peek. If you like SUDS, join the SUDS ALUMNI group on Facebook for pictures, bios, casting, and fun stuff!

Bryan Scott (Co-Author) is an award-winning producer, writer and director for both stage and television. In addition to co-writing SUDS, he was also one of its original Off-Broadway producers. Currently, Bryan is co-owner of Picture This Television, which produces numerous specials and series for PBS (TV411, In the Life), Lifetime (Intimate Portraits, Weddings of A Lifetime), Bravo (That’s A Wrap), HGTV (Spectacular Pools), WE (Romancing America) and worldwide syndication (Latin Explosion). Before forming his own company, Bryan created the game show Trashed for MTV, wrote The Mo Show (starring Mo Gaffney) for Fox, and wrote/produced Comedy Central’s first Gay and Lesbian comedy special, Out There. He also lived in London for a number of years where he worked extensively for BBC1 (The Full Wax), BBC2 (A Word in Your Era), and Channel 4 (Tonight with Jonathan Ross, For One Night Only, Accentuate the Positive). While in the UK, Bryan wrote and performed (with Meera Syal) in The Oppressed Minorities Big Fun Show, which won the “Pick of the Fringe” at the 1992 Edinburgh Festival before moving to the Shaw Theater in London’s West End. Bryan began his career in San Diego as a founding member of the improvisational comedy troupe, Modern Times. He spent several years as the staff producer for The Old Globe Theatre where he oversaw all outside productions. Now residing in New York City, Bryan is the recipient of two Emmy awards for the PBS series TV411 and has been nominated a total of five times. He is a member of the Dramatist Guild, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and the Producers Guild of America. Bryan dedicates SUDS to the memory of Doug Webb, Douglas Pagliotti, and to his late friend and first collaborator, Will Roberson.

Nick Reeves (Director) is extremely blessed to be working with such a tremendously talented

Page 12: Cast - Coronado Playhouse€¦ · liTTle shoP of horrors Nov 15-24 Music by Alan Menken Book and Lyrics by Howard Ashman Directed by Raylene J. Wall OnStage Playhouse: The VioleT

cast and crew. An actor and director with over 20 years’ experience, directing credits include Our Town, The Importance of Being Earnest, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, The Wizard of Oz, Sherlock Holmes’ Excellent Adventure, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, and The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 – the last four for the Coronado Playhouse. Acting credits include Mr. Applegate (Damn Yankees), John Worthing, J.P. (Earnest in Love), Dick Deadeye (H.M.S. Pinafore), Inspector Japp (Black Coffee), and Vincentio (The Taming of the Shrew).

Michael Mizerany (Choreographer) has choreographed extensively, including two critically acclaimed works for Diversionary Theater (Far From Eden and Let Me Into Your Skin), as well as the musical theater/dance productions of Altar Boyz; Chicago: A Speakeasy Cabaret, Grey Gardens, and A Midsummer Night’s Fever (ion theatre company); Carnvial! (The Coronado Playhouse); and Street Arts Prophets (circle circle dot dot). Michael has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the LA Stage Scene “Scenie” Award for Outstanding Choreography for Altar Boyz and the Bravo San Diego Award for Outstanding Choreographer of 2012. Currently, he is producing and choreographing Malashock/RAW4.

Rick Shaffer (Co-Musical Director) is especially pleased to be collaborating once again with Nick Reeves and Erich Einfalt. SUDS is the latest in a long string of productions for the Coronado Playhouse for which Rick has provided vocal and musical direction and accompaniment. Other San Diego theater credits include dozens of musical and dramatic productions for such theatre companies as Diversionary Theatre, Pickwick Players, Scripps Ranch Theatre, OnStage Playhouse, PowPAC, Lamplighters, Compass Theatre, and the Honors Theatre Project of the SDUSD Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

Erich Einfalt (Co-Musical Director) is pleased to be sharing musical direction duties with Rick Shaffer. SUDS is the fifth production at Coronado Playhouse since 2009 with Erich as musical director – and he does not seem to care that they were not all originally “musicals”, per se. However, he does seem determined to add that extra “something” that only music can provide. Previous behind-the-scenes soundings include The Wizard of Oz (with Jim Buxton), Sherlock Holmes’ Excellent Adventure, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, and The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.

Sven Salumaa (Producer) would like to thank the cast and crew of this wonderful production! He is a proud member of the Coronado Playhouse’s Board of Directors. Some of Sven’s other “jobs” here have been producer of Carnival! (2013), a writer and actor in Actions Most Ridiculous (2010), and a director of Bethlehem Road (2012). Other San Diego credits include Heddatron and U.S. Drag at ion theatre company; Yank! and The Daddy Machine at Diversionary Theatre; They’re Playing Our Song and Chapter Two at Scripps Ranch Theatre; Fuddy Meers at PowPAC; and The Diary of Anne Frank at OnStage Playhouse.

Stephanie Salo (Co-Producer) is very excited for the opportunity to co-produce this production of SUDS with her friend Sven Salumaa. Other credits include Assistant Stage Manager for Ruthless! The Musical, Lighting Technician for Carnival! (Coronado Playhouse), and Assistant Stage Manager for The Wizard of Oz (Infinity Dance Arts). For the past six and a half years, Stephanie has served in the United States Navy. In January of 2015, she plans to finish her tour of service and return to college to complete her BA in technical theatre. Many thanks to her husband for supporting her in every avenue of life.

Samuel Disalvo (Stage Manager, Lighting Technician) is proud to be assisting as Stage Manager for SUDS. This is my second time assisting Nick Reeves, and 4th time assisting at the Coronado Playhouse. I recently was an Assistant Stage Manager for The Drowsy Chaperone, a Spot Operator for The Great American Trailer Park Musical, and as a stage hand assistant for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I am thankful and grateful to receive this great experience.

Dale Goodman (Lighting Design) has been an active theatre technician since 1990. Dale’s credits include extra work in local motion pictures; acting lighting, set, and sound design for numerous shows at the Coronado Playhouse; as well as a 1998 Aubrey for technical direction of I Hate Hamlet, and a 2008 Aubrey for lighting design for Blithe Spirit. Dale has also volunteered at the Hahn, Sweetooth, and Casa del Prado. Dale’s wife Betty provides a helping hand with lights, and much moral support for the Coronado Playhouse.

Jacob Koehnen (Sound Design and Sound Technician) is not only a nine-year veteran of the local theatre scene, he is also an Eagle Scout and an honors’ student, who is always ready to lend a helping hand. His recent productions include

Page 13: Cast - Coronado Playhouse€¦ · liTTle shoP of horrors Nov 15-24 Music by Alan Menken Book and Lyrics by Howard Ashman Directed by Raylene J. Wall OnStage Playhouse: The VioleT

miXtape (Lambs Players Theatre), Carnival! (Coronado Playhouse), The Crucible (Pickwick Players), and Curse of the Starving Class (Triad Productions). Jacob always enjoys the cast he works with and always hopes to work with them again.

Eileen Salsman (Costume Design and Construction) has found that costume design is a way to express her insane imagination, need for sparkles, glitter, and laughter. Eileen fell in love with costuming when designing and constructing the trees for The Wizard of Oz a couple years back. Using her skills as an artist and seamstress to support the telling of a good story rocks!

Wendy Burroughs (Costume Design and Construction) believes that costuming is about having fun while making a play’s characters realistic and empathetic. Wendy has worked in local community theatre set design for a number of years, venturing into costume design only recently with the Coronado Playhouse productions of The Great American Trailer Park Musical and The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940.

Jane Russell (Costume Design and Construction, Painting) became involved with theatre in the year 2000 when her friend, Rosemary King, said she could use some help with the five shows she was working on. Since then, Jane has received many awards for painting, set design, and set decoration, as well as an Aubrey for costume design. She still enjoys volunteering and meeting new and interesting people.Pamela Everett (Props and House Dressing) has enjoyed working in the theatre since her high school and college days. Every show along the way has been memorable, and she has received many Blue Ribbon and Aubrey awards for Props, set Dressing, and House while working with the wonderful players and directors at the Coronado Playhouse. But her greatest roles have been as wife (she met her husband in the theatre) and mother (two wonderful children). She thanks Nick for letting her come back and indulge her imagination once again!

Rosemary King (Scenic Painting) started painting scenery for OnStage Playhouse in 1987 for the production of All the Way Home. She has participated in the painting, construction, and design of sets for dozens of plays for the Scripps Ranch Community Theatre, Clairemont Players, OnStage Playhouse, PowPAC, and Coronado Playhouse, for which she has received numerous

Aubrey awards and nominations. Rosemary says. “This is a work of love and I will continue to do what I can for as long as I can.”

She recently directed Tea With Cocoa for the North Park Playwrights festival, and was last seen in Carnival! at CPH. She has been in many award-winning ensembles, and has choreographed Mack and Mabel, Big Daddy Returns, and Master Harold and the Boys (CAT); Roman Holiday (CPH); and The Elephant Man (OnStage Playhouse). She was inducted into the Haunted Hotel Hall of Fame after 17 years of service and won the Jim Peyton Spirit of Community award in 2012. She is thrilled to be working with Nick, Sven, Sam and this talented cast!

Julian Sink (Property Assistant) is a 16 year old high school student. Julian has performed in three plays but now wants to learn the technical side of theatre. The plays he performed in were Diary of Anne Frank (Dussell), Touchtone “M” for Murder (Tex), and Audience (Lee).
