MARKETS Objectives. To develop a competitive, market-led, and sustainable cassava value

chain MARKETS brings together multiple stakeholders to:

• Expand existing and identify new processors

to stimulate demand for cassava.

• Introduce high yielding varieties which are

also high in starch content.• Build capacity of producers, processors and

marketers to maintain an efficient supply

chain.

• Facilitate access to inputs such as cassava

stems, fertilizers, and credit.

• Facilitate the delivery of required quantities

and qualities of cassava roots to buyers.

• Improve food security and increase income.

MARKETS has rallied stakeholders atevery level of the value chain, forging

 partnerships with three major industrial

cassava processors. Business plans detail

the commitments of the partners toward

overcoming identified bottlenecks in

transport, supply, and varietal research.

MARKETS, with IITA, will mobilize

farmers and provide technical support

ensuring higher yields and income at the

farm gate.

Investment Opportunities. Increased domestic demand and growing imports of flour, starches,

and sugars provide an opportunity for market access investors. Cassava has been competitively

processed into commercial starch, flour, glucose, and ethanol elsewhere around the world. In

 Nigeria, investments are ideally

co-located with commercial

 production investments to

reduce transport costs and

combined with large outgrower

schemes to mitigate supply

risks. Commercial farming inexcess of 500 hectares appears

attractive if the investment

involves proven large scale

farm management expertise and

defined commercial contracts.

pressures in the sector may also

generate specialized transport

solutions for long-haul cassava.
