PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014 PX-5S FAQ This FAQ was compiled from questions and answers off the Casio Music Forum - PX-5S and the PX-5S FaceBook page. Some of these questions were only asked once, but the term FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) is more common than LFSAQTTOCUO (List of Frequently and Seldom Asked Questions or Those That Only Come Up Once). If you have further questions, post them to the forum or FaceBook page. I’ll try to add the question and solution into the PX-5S LSAQTTOCUO... er... FAQ. I have also avoided questions such as, “Is the PX-5S as good as the Nordkorgzweil XYZ5000?” This question is not unlike asking, “Do you like chocolate more than I like beer?” Here is the answer up front: the “best” keyboard is the one that suits your needs, whether they be sound, flexibility, authenticity, cost, peer pressure, or otherwise. PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

Setup/General

I just received my brand new Casio PX-5S and the display shows ERROR: No Media.

Download the latest update from here:http://support.casio...?cid=008&pid=20

Put the file in the root folder on a USB drive.Turn off your PX-5S and turn it back on. It should automatically install the update.(Mike Martin)

Put the latest firmware on a USB drive (NOT in the MUSICDAT folder). Turn off the PX-5S, put the USB stick in, turn on the PX-5S. Wait. You should be fine in a few minutes. Download the file, unzip it and put the unzipped file (update.bin) on your USB drive. Again - do not put the file in the MUSICDAT folder. (Scott hamlin)

How should I keep the keys clean on the PX-5S?All I ever use is a soft cloth. If there was a mark, I might wet the cloth ever so slightly in plain water. (Anne Burton)An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure: Make sure you wash your hands with soap and dry them well before you play and cover the keyboard up when not in use. (Scott Hamlin)Soft cloth, and a basic windex type product sprayed on the cloth not directly on the keyboard. (Mike Martin)

What is the warranty on the PX-5S?In the US it is 1 year plus an additional 2 years when you register your purchase online. http://www.onlinereg...egory=Keyboards

I need to order/ship a new PX-5S. What’s the exact size of the box of the casio and the weight of the piano full in the box?

57 1/4" x 14 1/4" x 8 1/4" - 16 kg (Scott Hamlin)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

What are the dimensions of the PX-5S?52.05 x 11.26 x 5.31 (inch)Weight 24.47 lbs (W/O Battery)(Scott Hamlin)

What's the size of the "black area" (battery compartment)?Approx 4 x 10 inches. (10 x 25 cm) (Brad Saucier)

I left my PX in the car in the garage. Temperature above freezing - but not much. Will it come to any harm in the cold?

As long as it you warm it to room temp slowly to prevent condensation it SHOULD be OK... If it were me I would bring her in though. Too many thieves about. (Scott Hamlin)

Occasionally I accidentally turn off the PX-5S because the power button is next to the volume knob.

Get you an SD card case... cut a slot in the bottom with an xActo. Use thin mounting tape to secure the casing over the power button. (Scott Hamlin)

HELP!!!!!!!!!! My PX has just totally locked up!!!!!Unplug it, leave it off for a few minutes. Then power it up. Take out batteries if you have them in. (Mike Martin)

What hard-shell case will fit the PX-5S?The pros use the Gator GKPE-88SLIM-TSA (Scott Hamlin)

I am doing a firmware update from 1.10 to 1.12. Do I also need to update to 1.11 or are all the changes in 1.12?You can go right to 1.12.. (Scott Hamlin)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

Rear Audio Jacks

Is it possible to send audio to a pc, to record out of the USB port on the back of the px5s?

The PX-5S does not send audio over the USB, only MIDI data. (Scott Hamlin)

Can the Audio In on my PX-5S can accept both dual unbalanced and balanced cables?

Unbalanced, although there shouldn't be any harm in using balanced. The PX-5S has unbalanced inputs and outputs. For longer cable runs you should use direct boxes. (Mike Martin)

Can I use mono output instead of stereo?

Yes. Be aware that the left/mono output is summed (i.e. it combines the left and right stereo channels onto one channel when it is used by itself) and the right output is just the right channel. Although most sounds on the PX-5S sound fine when output this way, it may have undesired results when using some stereo effects (like the Rotary Speaker DSP).

What is the best way to connect a mono synth to the PX-5S line-in? If you plug the mono synth into the mono input will it only be heard in one ear?

Yes, You'll have to split it and bring it in both the left and right inputs. (Mike Martin)

Can you apply effects to the audio inputs on the back of the PX-5S?No - just the master compressor and eq.. no reverb, delay, etc. (Scott Hamlin)

Can I use the Audio Input on the back to connect a microphone? No. Microphone levels are too low for the line-level inputs without a preamp.

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

I’m performing live and using a master mixer. What is the best way to connect to it?

If the PA is stereo and you are not too far away from it, left and right line-level outputs should give you the most true sound. If the PA is mono or you must run a long cable stretch, you will probably want to use a short line-level mono into a direct box (DI) and an XLR cable into the mixer.

Can I adjust the volume of the Audio/Line Inputs or USB Drive WAV playback independently?

Yes. SYS SETTING > Sound Generator > External Volume or Audio Volume

External MIDI devices

Is there a way have a zone drive another midi device without it having a sound tone from the Px5.

Edit>Stage Setting>Zone>Midi>Gen Out OFF. (Brad Saucier)

Is there an iPad app that I can use to control the Stage Settings on the PX-5S? What about Android?

Look for SetListMaker in the app store. Also check out MIDI Designer and the PX-5S template at http://priviapro.wordpress.com/2013/12/04/privia-px-5s-layout-for-midi-designer-

iphone-and-ipad/.For Android, try MIDI OSC. (Martin Butigan)

My external MIDI device or DAW keeps changing the tones/Stage Settings of the PX-5S.

On the PX-5S, go to MIDI -> RX Filter -> Program Change and change the value to ON. This filters out incoming Program Change messages.

MIDI notes from the PX-5S make my other devices behave strangely. The PX-5S uses high-resolution MIDI data by default. Turn off this function in System Settings / MIDI / Hi Res Out.

11

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

Can I select Stage settings using a midi pedalboard or foot switch?Yes, if your MIDI Pedalboard can send bank/program changes. (Mike Martin)Set your device to send Bank Select value of 70H. Then program change values 00-99 should select your Stage Settings. Make sure the SYS SETTING > MIDI > Stage Set.chg value is set to PrgBnk.

Can I disable midi program change messages from being sent globally? I got it working tonight. System->Stage Settings Change, and switched to NRPN. (Dave Bradley)The NRPN workaround should work for you by turning the program change messages into something that your other keyboard will interpret as nonsense (hopefully) and just ignore. But messages are still coming out of the PX-5S. (Jason Peterson)

I want to use my external USB controller with the PX-5S.The USB input on the PX-5S is not designed to accept USB output from a controller. It is just for interface with a computer (including iPad). If your controller has standard 5-pin MIDI ports, use those. If it only has a USB out, you will need to either run it through a computer, or use a USB MIDI Host such as the Kenton MIDI USB Host or the iConnectMIDI.

Can I send MIDI Thru messages via USB. For example, External module midi out --> midi in (PX - 5s) --> USB out --> USB in (iPad)?

Unfortunately, there is no control for midi thru that contains midi out messages on the USB. It's one or the other. You can either send a signal through the keyboard from a controller to another device, or you can send the midi output from the keyboard to another device. You can't do both. (Choppin).

Also reference the manual, Web_PX5S-E-2A.pdf, page 41. Essentially, the MIDI out/thru port isn't a simultaneous out and thru. You get one or the other. There are MIDI Merge devices on the market that can help you accomplish this if it is essential to your setup.

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

Is there a way to play stage setups from an external source?

No problem. I know it's a lot to read through, but I hope it makes sense. Not to hit you over the head with a hammer, but here's the condensed version:

Sending From the PX to record to a sequencer one track at a time - Create a stage setting that only transmits on 1 zone and 1 channel:

Edit > Stage Settings > Zone Edit > Midi Edit > Midi Out [Off] --- USB Out [Off] for 3 of the 4 zones

Receiving Data to the Px-5s from an external source:

1. I don't care about stage settings:From the external device, send bank and tone information as a program change for any or all of the 16 channels (reference Tone and midi information from Tutorial manual page E-40 and above.)

2. I DO care about playing back stage settings:A. Send a stage setting bank select and program change to the PX-5s a. MSB=112, LSB=36 (this value is ignored), PC=stage setting number b. Channels 1-4 will play back zones 1-4 on the current stage settingB. Perhaps you want to use the Stage setting but also want to change the tone's on the layers (zones):After sending the Stage Setting bank and program change, send another program change on channels 1 through 4 for which ever zone you want to change the tone of. For example, let say we want to change to Stage setting 6-0, Piano and Bass. We like how the sounds: reverb, delay, eq, etc are setup, we just want to change the piano sound to a Warm Pad:- From the external source send MSB=112, LSB=36 (LSB ignored), PC=60- Now change layer 1 by sending a program change on channel for the bank and tone of Warm Pad (receiving only 48, 89 / transmitting and receiving 69,22)- MSB=69, LSB=00, PC=22 (choppin)

What's the best way to stop the 5s sending program changes out the midi port to my second keyboard? I want the other board to basically only receive note on and offs.

In Stage Settings / Zone Edit / MIDI Edit you'll find a Program and Bank switch for each zone. By default this is set to OFF. So unless you turned this ON the PX-5S won't

13

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

send Bank/Program change for the zones. It will however send Bank Program Changes for the Stage Settings themselves. To turn this off, go to System Settings / MIDI. Scroll down and for Stage Set Change set it from Program/Bank to NRPN.

How do I synch the tempo between px5s and another keyboard (Roland Juno)? The PX will sync to MIDI clock. Not MMC. You should ask Roland how to make your Juno send MIDI Clock. As it says in the manual, press the METRO / SYNC button. Here you'll find the option to set the Juno to be the Master sync device. I wonder if Roland does tech support for Casio products.... PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

USB Drive

Which USB port do I use, the front or the back? The front USB port is for USB drives (ThumbDrive, JumpDrive, etc.) only. The rear USB port is for connecting the PX-5S to a computer.

How do I play a song file (WAV, MP3) using the usb thumb drive? The PX-5S cannot play MP3 files. Use an audio file editor to save it as a linear PCM, 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo WAV file. It must also be named TAKEXX.WAV, where XX is a number between 00-99.

Make sure you have the USB drive plugged in with WAV files you want to play.1. Press (don't hold) the [Media] button. The titles of the files will appear.2. Press the + or - key to cue up the WAV you want to play.

Now you can go on and do other things on the keyboard, switch banks, mess with stage settings, play the keyboard. Whenever you want to play or stop the WAV file that is cued up, press the [Start/Stop] button.

When you press the [Media] button, it will be in "Media Mode" where you can select different files to play. If you want to play different files, just scroll using the + or - keys and then press start.

If you need to play a sound and both hands are full, you can set one of the pedals to toggle the start and stop action.

To set the start/stop for Audio to Pedal 2, for example for a particular Stage Setting:

1. Select the stage setting2. Press [Edit]Choose Stage Setting > Common Edit > Pedal 2 > Pedal Target > Target[Audio Str/Stp]

Cue up your audio file as described previously. If you saved the changes to the stage setting, whenever you select that stage setting and depress Pedal 2, it will start or stop the current wave file cued up.

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

(Choppin)

What do all the different extensions mean on a file and how do we use/install them properly?

ZPF - Stage setting (in my head PF meaning "Performance"...... Just a guess.....)ZTN - Melody tone (TN - probably "tone")ZAR - ArpeggioZPH - Phrase

Before you load anything you need to have decided on where to put it. For a stage setting you need to select a slot to overwrite. For a melody tone, phrase or arpeg- gio you need to choose an empty user slot. it doesn't matter which one. The editor is very useful for seeing at a glance where the empty slots are.

If you want to install them by USB stick on the keyboard: MEDIA - LOAD - then select STAGE SETTING or whatever - use KNOB 2 to select the one you want, then DOWN arrow to select the (0-0) box below and again use KNOB 2 to select where you wish to put it. Loading hex layers (ZLT - layer tones) via USB stick is slightly different. After doing MEDIA - LOAD - TONE you then need to PRESS the HEX LAYER button (to the left of the display window).

If you want to install them from the editor: In the editor on the TRANSFER page use the pull down menu at the top of the page (little arrow beside STAGE SETTING) to select the type of file you wish to transfer. Simply drag the one you want from the left hand side to where you want it to go on the right. I like to use the editor to load tones etc. as you can see very easily where the empty slots are. SS's are just as easy to load in from the USB stick.

If you are loading a SS you do NOT have to load in its tones separately. Each SS comes complete with all its tones - therefore the SS's don't need to know where the tones are as they keep their own version. You can even move your tones around and it will make no difference.

If you have found a SS which also has phrases, you will need to load ALL of them in separately, as described above. Arpeggios will not need to be loaded, however, as they are included in the SS.

Is there a 'transpose' function for this keyboard?Press the Sys Settings button, select MIDI. (Mike Martin)

I've tried all the velocity curves the piano is either too loud or too soft for my needs.

The pianos are set by default for a very wide dynamic range (as are all Privia models). You can reduce the dynamic range yourself. Press the EDIT button, select TONE. Go to the AMP page. Find velocity and reduce it from a value of +64 to around 40. You'll have to scroll back up to the stop of the AMP page and reduce the overall volume to compensate. (Mike Martin)

There seems to be a time lag between when I press a key and when the note sounds.

The PX-5S has a feature to make it feel more like a real piano in which it takes time to physically move the hammer from rest position to the string. This can be changed in each individual Stage Setting: Edit > Stage Setting > Common Edit > Hammer Response.

Sometimes, fast/repeated notes don’t seem to sound.Check that the portamento is off in that stage setting.

Some download files from the Casio forum are "Stage Settings," some are "tones." Will replacing a "tone" with a new one effect a "stage setting" at all?

No. The stage settings are stored with information. The stage setting sound won't change unless you edit that stage setting and save it. There are empty slots for user tones and hexlayers... as you scroll through them you will see some start with "P" (preset) or U (user). (Scott Hamlin)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

When I added a different tone to a stage setting the effects all change. All of the tones, factory and user, are stored with their own effect assignment parameters. When recalling them into any location, they bring those effects with them. (Brad Saucier)

How do I set a stage setting so that a voice sound only "appears" after several seconds?

The timing and behavior of the tones can be changed using the Amp, Filter, and Pitch envelopes. These envelopes give you control over the Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release properties of the tone.

In a Hex Layer the Envelope has more stages. Instead of ADSR, it has IADDDRR:

I - Initial Level. This allows you to start the note at any level, there is no time value for this. This occurs immediately upon key on.A - Attack Time/Level - The next stage when set when set in combination with the Initial Level controls the "fade in" of a particular sound. D, D - The first two Decay stages are essentially the same, just one after the other. This next stage can allow the amplitude to decrease or increase over time while the key is being held. Imagine a trumpet sound that gets a little louder while the key is being held. D#3 - This is technically the "Sustain" portion of the envelope. The sound will hold at this level as long as the key is held.R#1 and R#2 - The release stages are what happens after the key is released. Since there are two stages you could have the sound initially louder, then quieter and fade out. (Mike Martin)

I just put together a hex layer in which a time value for the initial attack would have been nice. I didn't want a fade-in; I wanted a slightly delayed attack. I was able to get around it by setting initial level and attack level to zero and attack time to the delay. Effectively, this made the first decay stage into the attack stage, but it had the intended effect. (Jason Peterson)

Can i have an hex on more then 1 zone? Can i add more then 4 sounds on a stage settings?

You can have up to two hex sounds per stage setting - but they must be in zones 1 and 2. As each hex can contain 6 sounds you can have up to 14 sounds in total!

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

(Anne Burton)

I want to change the key sesitivity of my tone to be like a piano or no sensitivity like an organ.

On the AMP page you'll find Velocity Sensitivity. Turn that up to a value of 64 for most dynamic range. If you increase the velocity sensitivity the volume will drop, increase the volume at the top of the Amp page. If the shape of the sound is changing with velocity that is because of the Velocity sensitivity parameter on the FILTER page. (Mike Martin)

Where is the transpose button? What I do is transpose WITHIN the stage setting and save my setups that way.. so when I pull up the sound it's in the right key... You can also make "generic" Stage Settings for your go-to piano sound and save them in a bank.. call them Grand Piano +1, Grand Piano -1, etc. (Scott Hamlin)

If you do a lot of transposing on the fly, you can assign a slider or knob to do it, too. Of course, it has to be in each stage setting you use, since it's not the global transpose. Choose the following parameters:Target - RPNMSB - 0LSB - 2Send - MSBMin & Max: This is your range of transposable keys. If you go 57 & 71, it will give you -7 and +7 semitones, respectively.

Is there a way to sync the LFOs to the tempo, i.e. so that a pulse oscillation will be in tempo with percussion?

No. But try creating an arpeggiator setup to control the filter or amp. (Brad Saucier)

Why do I hear a metallic sound or click when i push the sustain pedal in a piano sound?

That is part of the "realism" effect of the damper pedal being activated. You can turn it off if you don't like it. (Scott Hamlin)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

Press the effect button called SYSTEM. There you will find Damper Noise and resonance levels. (Brad Saucier)

I noticed there were some in the standard set that didn't seem to play at both ends of the keyboard at the bottom there's about 17 (Tabla Ge - Mridangum Num) and at the top there's about 19 (Tabla 1- High Tang Gu).

Those are outside of the range of the keyboard. Note that the chart is more than 88 keys. The same sounds are in the 2 ethnic sets where they can be played. You can also go into system edit>midi>and transpose down 2 octaves to play the sounds in Standard Set 1. Transpose up for the upper end. (Brad Saucier)

I have an organ voice that I want to use on a zone and I want to turn the touch sensitivity off so the key velocity doesn’t affect the volume.

Try editing the TONE.. under volume there is a parameter for VOLUME and VELOCITY SENSE. (Scott Hamlin)I'll just add that you need to turn velocity sense to zero in both the Amp and Filter envelopes. When I first tried that, I thought that the velocity sense didn't work because I turned it to zero in Amp and there were still velocity-related effects. Then I realized the Filter was working on it too. Turn them both to zero and you've got yourself an organ! (Jason Peterson)

“When I adjust the knob or slider assigned to Attack, the changes do not write to the stage setting.” “I adjusted a slider and tried to overwrite the existing stage setting in hopes of saving the new slider position. It failed to save the new slider position as a stage setting after numerous attempts.”

Basically anything that is assigned to the TONE itself is NOT stored by moving the slider / knob and pressing the WRITE button. This would include: Filter, Resonance, Attack, Release, DSP Effect Parameters as well as other parameters such as CC#11 Expression and more. You'll have to edit the sound and adjust the those parameters (such as attack times) for each of the layers. (Mike Martin)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

I am trying to save a melody tone using the front panel. I want it to go into the strings section, but I am not being offered the chance to place it anywhere other than in the piano section. How do I make it change to the strings location? (I have tried twiddling knob 2, using the YES/NO buttons, and pressing strings)

If the tone started in the piano tone area you an only save it in the piano tone area. You can however save it to USB then reload it into a different area. (Mike Martin)

What does Dynamic Panning do on the Pan envelope? The Dynamic Panning allows the pan to change while the notes are held down. Try assigning Pan to a knob and change it while you play a note. With Dynamic Pan off, the note will stay in the stereo position it was when it was struck, but the next note will change position in the stereo field. With Dynamic Pan on, the note will change as soon as you change the pan value. The HerbiesRoadz setting in the forum takes advantage of this for the active panning by the arpeggiator.

Samples

Is the piano sample from the PX3 available on the PX5?It is from the same piano, but the samples are not exactly the same. (Mike Martin)

What size are the samples that the PX-5S uses?Casio does not publish it. Size doesn't necessarily equate to quality. (Mike Martin)Most of this page applies to the PX-5S.. that should give you an idea of what else goes into it besides the sampling...http://www.casio-intl.com/asia-mea/en/emi/privia/info/ (Scott Hamlin)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

Stage Settings

What gets stored in a Stage Setting?

You can edit the tone from within the Stage Setting. Next the new sound is stored as part of the Stage Setting itself! This means that if you save or backup your Stage Settings to a USB drive or download one from the web all the of the objects that the Stage Settings needs are included within that file. This includes custom tones, arpeggiators and [hex layers and drum sets]. (Mike Martin)

You can still save these items individually, that is useful if you want to use them in a different Stage Setting.

Phrases DO NOT get stored within the Stage Setting.

Where do I get new Stage Settings? You can create your own, or see what others have created at the Casio Music Forums: http://www.casiomusicforums.com/index.php?/files/category/3-privia-px-5s/. You must be logged in before you can download new files.

How do you select Stage Settings from MIDI (Another keyboard or iPad Remote Control)?

Bank 112, followed by a program change 0-99 will select the Stage Settings. (Mike Martin)

I've downloaded Stage Settings and put them on the USB drive, but I can not load them.

The files need to be placed in the MUSICDAT folder on the USB drive for the PX-5S to see them. (Mike Martin)

How do I change the name of a Stage Setting?Go to the stage setting whose name you want to replace.Press "WRITE"Press "ENTER" to select *StageSettingPress the "DOWN ARROW" keyYou will see a little line under the first letter of the Stage Setting current name

23

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

Use KNOB 2  to change the letter - turn the knob all the way to the left (counter-clockwise) for a blank spaceUse the "RIGHT ARROW" key to change to the next letterContinue until you are donePress "ENTER" to save the Stage SettingPress "YES" to confirm the save(Mike Martin)

If you are holding or sustaining notes, and change to a different Stage Setting, what will happen to the sustaining notes/arpeggios/phrases that are still ringing? What about a WAV file playing from the USB drive?

Melody Tone notes won't be chopped off. They will continue to sound. Hex layer tone notes will cut short when the Stage Setting is changed. The WAV file should also continue to play, unaffected.

How do I go about changing volume for 1 of the zones in a stage setting?Edit > Stage Setting > Zone > Mixer Edit > Volume. A slider or knob can be assigned to this function, too. See the Controllers - Knobs/Sliders section of this document.

How do I restore the factory Stage Settings?Download them from http://www.casiomusicforums.com/index.php?/files/file/1-px-5s-v110-stage-

settings/, or http://www.casiomusicforums.com/index.php?/files/file/218-px-5s-stage-settings-alternate-order/

How do I find the original settings of a stage setting? They are all in the data editor, though. You need to look at the tabs at the top of the screen - to the right of "stage setting". There is one for each tone/zone. Select the zone you are interested in, and then select the "tone" tab from slightly lower down. (There are also DSP and LFO tabs beside it). The "Mike" settings for chorus/reverb/delay are given under tone effect. All the other, more complicated settings are to be found there as well if you look around. (Anne Burton)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

I transferred Stage Settings to the PX-5S from the data editor and now when I turn the PX-5S back on, they’re gone and the previous Stage Settings are back.

This is a known bug as of firmware version 1.11. The current workaround until a new firmware release is to press Write from the PX-5S on each save setting you transfer.

What happens when you initialise just one stage setting? When you "Intialize" a Stage Setting: It erases whatever is there and creates a "blank" stage setting. It DOES NOT revert to the factory slot.. you need to load in the original to do that. (Scott Hamlin)

Where’s the “Split” button?[There isn’t one, but] don't worry, the px is extremely splittable - you can have up to four different splits and each if them can be octave shifted up to 2 octaves in each direction!!I haven't done splits working from the keyboard itself, as I prefer to use the data editor which you can install on a computer, but it is possible to do them from either method.Basically though, there are four separate zones and each can occupy a portion of the keyboard and have whatever sound you like. It sounds extremely complicated but it is actually surprisingly simple to operate (If I can manage it then anybody can!) You do have to set up your splits in advance, but it works well in practice as you can have templates for common ones and then create special ones for unusual songs.Mike has also created some stage settings which are already split (I think in the 6's possibly) so you can start with these and then just alter the tones and placement of the splits to get you going. (Anne Burton)

I need to set up a split on this synth today… not my usual axe. I speak Korg and Roland, but the Casio is new to me. I just want DistortedOrg on the right and DistLeadWah on the left. Can someone walk me through it or point me to some quick directions? How about moving a tone down an octave???

25

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFPooBIzCLoI suggest this ^^^^^ video. It covers the split points in the first 10 minutes or so. If you need anything else just ask. (Brad )

Dave, that can be done several ways. Each has it's advantages and disadvantages.1) Press edit>stage setting>zone edit>mixer>course tune.....adjust. This way will allow you to swap around tones in the zone and remain shifted. This method only affects the PX-5s sound engine. What is output via midi is not shifted.

2) Press edit>stage setting>zone edit>MIDI edit...adjust. This method also allows you to swap tones around in the zone and remain shifted. This setting affects the PX-5s sound engine and midi output.

3) Press edit>tone>layer edit(hex tones only)>pitch>octave shift....adjust. This method adjust only the tone itself. Once you swap out a tone for another unaltered tone you will loose the shift. The midi output is not shifted with this method.

Once all settings are made....write the stage setting and thats it. (Brad )

What is the difference between the "coarse tune" and the transpose" (both on the zone edit page of the editor)? - They both seem to have the same effect. If you're editing the tuning in the zone mixer, it will only re tune the px sound. What is sent over midi will remain at A440. To retune midi use the midi course tune octave shift.

If you transpose/octave shift up in the midi section, it will affect both the PX sound and ext module sound. Say you don't want the px to be shifted up while the ext sound is. Then you go to the zone mixer course tune to offset the px and bring it back. (Brad Saucier)

Also, with the midi transpose I can get three octave using both octave shift & transpose (which is VERY useful), but the zone tune seems to only have two. (Anne Burton)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

Phrases

Is there a pause between the end and beginning of a phrase when it is looped?

No. The replay of the loop is immediate.

I converted a phrase from a MIDI file then transfered from the editor. It shows up on the PX-5S as “untitled”.

Currently, phrases created this way do not carry the file name over to the PX-5S. They must be renamed on the PX-5S using the “write” button which will allow you to specify both the phrase name and slot number.

Can I change the volume of the metronome in the phrase recorder? No.

When I press play, both the backing track and the phrase come on at the same time.

The Start/Stop button functions for both the Audio and the Phrase. If possible, only have one or the other set to start (light lit on that button). If that is not an option, you can assign a pedal to "start phrase" and the other to "start audio". Of course, you lose any other pedal functions you might need for that Stage Setting.

Can I change the tempo of a phrase?Yes. Press the tempo button and adjust the value, or tap the tempo button at the rhythm you want and let the PX-5S determine the value for you. Make sure to save the stage setting again to store the tempo change.

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

Arpeggiator

Where are arpeggiator patterns stored?

Arpeggio patterns that have been edited or created from scratch are stored inside of a stage setting when a stage setting is saved to memory. This is great for sharing stage settings that use custom arpeggios because there's no need for a separate arpeggio file to tag along with the stage setting. This feature also apply's to edited user melody tones, hex layers and drum sets. Phrases are not included in this. (Brad Saucier)

You can also save it as its own ZAR file, or insert it into the arpeggio User Memory for use in other Stage Settings.

Does the arpeggiator occupy a particular zone?An arpeggio can be assigned to each of the 4 zones. All at once or only 1. You decide. It can be assigned to a zone but not necessarily used until it's enabled. (Brad Saucier)

Does anyone happen to know if there is a simple way to make a sound sound over and over again quickly, like a xylophone having a roll (or whatever you call it) played on it by the mallets.....? Preferably without using the arpeggiator, as I have not yet come to grips with that. Perhaps this is not possible, but I thought I would ask just in case.

Here is what I've found with the arpeggiator: If you choose L1 for the current step, that step in the arpeggio will sound the lowest note of whatever chord you're playing. If you're playing a C major triad, that step will sound a C. If you only have one step in your arpeggio, it will just sound that step over and over. It sounds like that may be what you want. But, in case you want more... If you choose L2, the current step will sound an E (again for the C major triad). Say you want to play a C major arpeggio over one octave (C E G C, C E G C, ...), you could set up a 4 step arpeggio with the steps L1, L2, L3, L4. Then, play a C major triad in root position. Because you're only playing 3 notes, the L4 step will play the first step an octave higher. The cool thing about this (because there's only one cool thing about this, right?) is that you could play a 4-note 7th chord, for example, and have it arpeggiate that. In that case, you wouldn't get the top octave note because you're holding a full 4 notes down.

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

The "U" parameters work the same way, but from the top note down, instead of the bottom note up.I haven't experimented with the "P" parameters, but I suspect you'll get inversions. I'm not near my keyboard, so I can't verify this. (Jason Peterson)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

DSPs

Rotary Speaker / Leslie

My rotary speaker (Leslie) effect sounds weird.

You'll probably want to tweak some of the Leslie parameters, specifically speed and wet/dry mix. If it's too slow, you might get a wavering sound more than a tremolo/chorus effect. Also, try adjusting the wet/dry mix. If it's all wet, the sound may simply be too deep.

Also, the "Rotary Speaker" DSP seems to be designed to simulate two opposing microphones on a Leslie cabinet to catch the speaker "coming and going". When these two "mics" are put into stereo, your brain separates these into two distinct actions. When they're summed together, however, you layer the comings and goings onto each other and the result gets muddy and confusing.

This is great if you're playing stereo, but in a live setting where you're going mono, you run into problems. Effectively, the two-microphone simulation turns into a one-mic situation with the speaker rotating twice as fast (assuming you are using the left/mono summing output). The solutions are to turn the speed down or to use the right non-summing output for stage settings in which you use the Leslie. Just slowing the speed still gives you the issue of having the comings and goings piled onto each other, but at least it doesn't sound like a sci-fi deathray.

One note of caution is that if the PA is mono, you'll still have the summing effect, just downstream in your mixer instead of the PX-5S. Take a recording from front-of-house, or have someone give it a listen to make sure that you're getting that sound out to the audience.

I recently bought a Leslie 2101 mk2 and need to know if there is a way to disable the Rotary and OD effects globally through DSP or do I need to edit each stage setting individually. Also, is there a off/on feature available(that I may have mssed) or do I have to change to level to 0 for each setting in the menu for rotary and overdrive?

Press and hold the dsp button to disable those effects.

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

Controllers

Pedals

Can I use my expression pedal with the PX-5S?

The PX-5S does not directly support expression pedals that connect with a 1/4” phone jack. The only way to use a pedal to control expression is via MIDI. If you already have an expression pedal, you can use a device such as the MIDI Solutions Pedal Controller to convert the 1/4” phone jack output into MIDI output.

Other devices, such as the Boss FV-500L can do a similar job since they act as a foot-activated volume control. In this case, you send the audio output of the PX-5S into the pedal and the pedal output to the amp/mixer. However, this is not zone- or channel-specific. The volume of the entire keyboard will be affected, but that may be acceptable in your specific circumstance.

Finally, there are MIDI pedalboards like the Behringer FCB-1010 and the Roland FC-300 that natively send MIDI information, have multiple buttons, and are programmable. The aforementioned FCB-1010 model does have a rather involved programming process, so make sure you do your research to ensure it’s what you’re looking for before investing in one.

How do I use a pedal to switch between stage settings?

There are two ways. Set up the pedal to increment/decrement stage settings, or assign a CC to it.

Increment/decrement stage settings (Mike Martin):Press SYS SETTING. Select GENERALSelect Stage Set FilterThen set Pedal to "Stage Inc" or “Stage Dec”.Using the pedal in this way is global, in other words, you cannot use it for anything else, regardless of what function it is given in the stage setting.

Assign a CC:Assign the pedal you want for the switch thusly:

31

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

1. Target: NRPN2. MSB: 36 LSB: 03. Send data: LSB4. Adjust both min and max value to the same value, the first digit being the Stage Setting Bank and the second digit being number 0-9 of that bank.5. In the System Settings menu, change Stage Setting Change to NRPN.

This method has the benefit of being Stage Setting specific. For example, use this method if you want the pedal to change stage settings in one setting, but use it for a damper pedal in another.

Can the MIDI Solutions Pedal Controller be used on the PX-5S for expression or sustain?

Many people have expressed interest in using this device with the PX-5S to use either as an expression pedal or to use with a continuous damper pedal such as the Roland DP-10.

The MIDI Solutions product only transmits on 1 MIDI channel. This means that regardless of how you're using (expression or sustain) it can only control 1 zone of the PX-5S at a time. (Mike Martin)

Is it possible and if so how can I set the assignable foot pedal to transmit a MIDI CC# to an external component?

Yes. This is not global so you need to edit each stage setting.

Under stage setting, make sure either pedal 1 or pedal 2 is enabled (whatever one you want to assign the CC to).Under target for that Pedal, select the CC # you need. (Scott Hamlin)

I was hoping to move something which is assigned to pedal 1 over to knob #4. The problem is: pedal 1 has an on rate, off rate and mode which knob 4 doesn't seem to have.

Anything assigned to the pedals can be moved to sliders or knobs or wheel. The on/off rate on the pedals is there to give them a slower ramp up/down rather than a

32

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

sharp on/off. The up/down for knobs and sliders is determined by physical movement of them and therefore not necessary for those. Depending on the application, the pedal may be the optimal controller for a particular function but that doesn't stop us from moving that function to a slider or knob if we want to. (Brad Saucier)

My sustain pedal works backwards. The sustain turns off when the pedal is down.

The PX-5S will automatically detect the polarity of the foot switch on startup. Have you tried turning the PX-5S off/on after the pedal is plugged in? (Scott Hamlin)

What does the On/Off Rate do on the pedals? An example of this is used in the BalladPnoLyr stage setting (1-0). In that case it is used to control the application of cutoff, but I’m going to show you how to put it use with the strings in stage setting PnoStr Layer (3-0).In this SS, the strings on zone 2 have the volume set at 95, but I want something a bit more subtle, so I adjust the level to 60. But what about when I want a bit more…I want to be able to fade the strings up to their original level, and then fade them back down. That would be easy with an expression pedal, so I have to use a workaround. Here’s how it’s done (I would suggest using the Data Editor so that it is easy to see the whole picture):

1) Adjust the volume of zone 2 to 60 - this will be my default level2)Turn off Pedal 2 on all zones except zone 23)Under the Common tab, scroll down to find Pedal 2. Set Target 1 to CC07 Volume (Target 2 should be left at the default “No Assign”) Set the operation mode to “Momentary” (the default)4) The default Min and Max values will be 0 and 127 respectively. Set Min to 60 (my preferred normal level) and Max to 95 (the original level for the SS that I want to boost to). Now if I operate the pedal, the volume will instantly jump to the maximum level, but I want it to fade up.5) The default ON and Off Rate settings are both 127. Reducing these values increases the time that the switch takes to reach either state. Set the On Rate to 10 and the Off Rate to 5. Now when the pedal is depressed, the strings will fade up to the higher volume and slowly drop back to the original volume after it is released.

Try varying the parameters for different fadein/out times. You can use this technique for any number of things where you want to vary a parameter - using just the On Rate/Off Rate when the pedal is used to turn a zone on and off will in effect, act like a fader too.

33

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

(Terry Lane)

How do you use the pedal to start/stop drum phrases?Just using the Arpeggio buttons leaves zone 1 ‘live’…in other words, if I hit any key in that zone, I get the associated drum as well as whatever else is in that region on another zone (usually a bass). This method simply starts/stops the arpeggio (phrase) and toggles the zone on or off.

1) Turn off Pedal 2 on all zones except the zone that contains the arpeggio or phrase (in this case zone 1)2) Turn zone 1 off3) Set Target 1 of Pedal 2 to “Zone On/Off”4) Set Target 2 of Pedal 2 to “Arp HoldOn/Off”

That’s it! Try it with 9-9 (EP/Bass/Shuffle - although I’d personally pick a different bass tone), or with 2-9 (Piano Groove). In the case of Piano Groove, where there is a drum phrase on zone 1 and an argeggio on zone 2, turn both of those zones off and enable Pedal 2 on both zones. I prefer to have the pedal set to Momentary so that I can cut the drums etc in and out instantly.

Good luck, and have fun with it! (Terry lane)

Knobs/Sliders

When I turn the knobs/sliders all the way down the sound doesn't return to it's original setting.

The knobs are really just remote controls for digital functions deep inside of the keyboard's firmware. Recalling a stage setting recalls the initial assignments for all of the controllers. Recalling a stage setting also recalls the parameter settings, e.g. EQ curves, that we made when we saved the stage setting. For example, in stage setting 0-0, the EQ was stored "flat" with no boosts or cuts. Recalling stage setting 0-0 will recall a "flat" EQ every time you hit the bank/set buttons "0-0" no matter what position the knobs are in. Since EQ is a setting that both "boosts" and "cuts" sound, the parameters for it have a center point where there's no effect on sound at all. Returning the knob to the center point will return EQ to this "flat" setting. Moving the knobs to the far left position is cutting sound. Recall the stage setting again when you want to recall the original EQ settings for that stage setting. (Brad Saucier)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

There are two settings to do with the sliders/ knobs. One is the range, (consisting of two numbers - often from 0-127), and one is the starting value (the number which you hear when you first select the stage setting). If the starting value which you have set is not the same as the lowest number of the range (and it can be any number from within that range), then when you return the slider to the bottom it will go back to the lowest number of the range instead.

If you want the starting point (bottom of slider) to be the same as your starting value, you must adjust this range. The range is on the COMMON page of the editor. Min and max under each knob/slider.

In order to find out what your actual starting point is for each zone, you must select the ZONE tab at the top of the page. All of its various settings are given on those pages. (Anne Burton)

How do I assign the knobs or sliders to control zone volume? The sliders and knobs on the PX-5S are highly configurable. Each slider or knob can do two things at once. Each zone can determine if it uses that physical controller or not.

So for example if you wanted sliders 1-4 to be zone volume. I'd recommend setting it like this:

Slider 1: CC#07 VolumeSlider 2: CC#07 VolumeSlider 3: CC#07 VolumeSlider 4: CC#07 Volume

Then in the Controllers section for Each Zone, you can do this:Zone 1: Slider 1 ON, Slider 2,3,4 OFFZone 2: Slider 2 ON, Slider 1,3,4 OFFZone 3: Slider 3 ON, Slider 1,2,4 OFFZone 4: Slider 4 ON, Slider 1,2,3 OFF(Mike Martin)

PX-5S FAQ - version November 06, 2014

What's the difference between the resonance, release, attack and cutoff settings (CC71 to CC74) that I can assign to the sliders, and the same settings I can edit on the Filter page?

The slider is adjusting the filter as an offset of what is set in the tone editing. If you have it set at -64 then the slider will not be able to overcome the initial setting. Set your cutoff to 00 for full control of cutoff on the slider. (Brad Saucier)

How do I assign a slider to control a DSP parameter? There are a couple ways to do that. The easiest is to go to the DSP page (in the editor) and select Auto Pan for your tone. I'm not sure which parameter of the panning you want to control, but let's say you want to select panning LFO rate. Go to Stage Setting > Common and, under the control you want (say, slider 1), find DSP Param 1. You'll probably want to adjust the min and max, since the full 0-127 range will probably be unnecessary.

The DSP parameters are in order of left-to-right, by line top-to-bottom in the DSP page. In other words, for the Auto Pan, the DSP parameters 1-6 are, respectively, Rate, Depth, Waveform, Manual, Wet, and Dry. These are also listed on pages E-19 to E-22 of the User's Guide Tutorial Manual (see www.px-5s.com).

If you download HerbiesRoadz from the Casio Music Forums, you'll find the Auto Pan is accomplished in a different way, using the arpeggiator. This allows it to Auto Pan as well as use the Distortion DSP, since you can't chain more than one DSP. Pretty clever! Unfortunately, that method of Auto Pan is a little less controllable, on the fly.

Modulation Wheel

Can I make it so the Mod Wheel (when set to modulation) resets to no modulation when I switch stage settings?Well, here is the strange answer...

If the "Arpeggio Enable" (in the stage setting > zone > controller menu) is the same value in both stage settings, the mod wheel WILL carry over when switching stage settings. If it is enabled in one and disabled in the other, the mod wheel will NOT carry over.

I have a "Generic Stage Setting" that has most effects and sends turned off. I copied that into two stage setting slots and put an electric piano in zone one of

each. When I switched back and forth between them after turning up the mod wheel, they both modulated. When I changed the "arpeggio enable" value of one of them, the modulation stopped when I switched settings. Modulation did not turn on again until I moved the mod wheel, regardless of how many times I switched between those stage settings. Strangely, this behavior also occurred with a slider set to control the modulation. However, any other effect (like reverb, delay, chorus, etc.) never carried through a stage setting switch.

Also note that the arpeggiator didn't need to actually be on (via the arpeggio/select button on the PX-5S), it just had to be enabled in the menu.

I'm pretty sure this is not an intentional "feature" of the PX-5S, but it can be exploited like this if you'd rather not have your EP modulate when switching from another one. I do wish that there was a "persistence" parameter for each of the controllers in each stage setting so you could choose to keep the values from the previous stage setting, or reset them. DAWs / Sequencing Software

How can I use the PX-5S for recording in garageband or any similar DAW? I tried to connect it directly via USB but it's not possible to get it on a track in the DAW.

I use logic and i have to load a new external instruments track. Of course you have to dissable internal sound or you will have double sound. Also check in Daw if midi is assigned to casio. (Mau Van)

The PX-5S does not do audio over USB so the MIDI express would not work for recording the PX-5S audio in your daw..  it would only record the MIDI information. You will need an interface that  has audio ins to record the PX-5S audio directly into a DAW. I use the FastTrack Pro - but there are many options. That being said, unless you want to do live,  overdub-type  multitracking,  you can simply record the onto a USB stick from the PX-5S and load that file into your DAW. CUBASE

Is there a patch script for the PX-5S?http://priviapro.wordpress.com/2013/11/14/privia-px-5s-patch-script-for-cubase/

Digital Performer

I'm still using Digital Performer version 4.6. When I plug my PX 5 in to DP, it sends and receives midi info just fine - but DP 4.6 naturally can't detect a pulldown patch list for the PX-5S because the PX wasn't around when this software was written. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can continue using my antiquated DAW but still be able to make fuller use of the PX 5?

A midnam file is what is needed although DP should be able to send bank/program changes without them. Midnam files are used by DP and ProTools from what I understand, unfortunately the only tool I've found to create a Midnam file is no longer supported and doesn't work on any Intel based Mac. Still looking for a workaround. (Mike Martin)

Sibelus

How can I avoid getting double-notes in Sibelius notation programme via midi?

Make sure you only have one zone turned on in the PX-5S, or the zones do not overlap.

PX-5S Data Editor

Where do I get the editor?http://support.casio.com/en/support/download.php?cid=008&pid=58.

Is there a way to edit stage settings in the Data Editor, without being connected to the piano?

No.

I see a message “Bulk Dump Disabled” when I try to save or transfer data to the PX-5S.

The PX-5S is in edit mode. Exit from the menu on the PX-5S and try again.

Can I run the Data Editor under Linux? There has been success running it under the "compatibility layer" WINE (see http://www.wineHQ.org). There are not many documented cases of this, but here's my experience on Linux Ubuntu, but with the Lubuntu desktop manager:

I downloaded and installed WINE from the Lubuntu Software Center.I downloaded the latest EXE of the Data Editor from Casio (http://support.casio.com/en/support/download.php?cid=008&pid=60). The EXE does NOT need to be installed. It just runs from whatever folder in which you choose to unzip it.I plugged my PX-5S into the USB port and powered it up.Now, from an XTerm, I typed wine "/home/jason/Music/PX-5S/CASIO DataEditor for PX-5S/DataEditorPX5s.exe"From within the Casio Data Editor after it started up, I went to Preference - MIDI IN and selected the PX-5S. I also did the same for MIDI OUT. Try clicking the blue "recycle" arrows if it doesn't automatically connect.

I didn't want to start from the command line each time so I created a desktop shortcut for the Lubuntu desktop:

Create a ".desktop" text file with the following text. I named my file "CasioDataEditor.desktop":

Exec=wine "/home/jason/Music/PX-5S/CASIO DataEditor for PX-5S/DataEditorPX5s.exe"

Comment[en_US]=StartupNotify=true

After saving the text file, I wanted a unique icon, so I right-clicked the file I just created and selected "Properties", clicked the icon picture, and replaced it from one of the many cool selections from the pictures on the Facebook PX-5S group. Then I dragged it onto the desktop. Voila! Click to start!

As Linux may be finicky about how you set things up, all I can say at this point is "Good Luck!" Casio does not provide support for running the Data Editor under Linux. Although at least two people have been known to get the Data Editor running on Linux, the Linux setups vary wildly and what works for one user may not work for another. You can ask in the forums or on the FaceBook group, but accept that you may ultimately be on your own. Of course, if you're a Linux user, you're already used to that.
