Principal’s Message - Neil Schneider

Just one of the many things I really enjoy and admire about the students at Casino High School is their willingness

to participate in community funding for those less fortunate than themselves.

Since the Tabulam bushfires we have had a group of students who spent the best part of the school day preparing

food for the Rural Fire Service members who were fighting the fires at Tabulam.

A group of VET Hospitality students prepared and delivered food for the meeting with the Excellency General The

Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retired), Governor of New South Wales, NSW Rural Fire Service Officers and

community members at Tabulam. A news article and photos have been included in this newsletter for your

interest.

The Student Representative Council has organised a Mufti Day for today to raise money for victims of the fire and

collection of essential items to be delivered to families in need as a result of the fire.

The Swimming Carnival again was an example of students “having a go” to earn points for participation which in

turn get added to their house points and contribute to a team effort. My congratulations to all age champions,

record breakers and those swimmers who represented the school at the Zone Swimming Carnival.

Year 12 students are at present completing their Half Yearly HSC exams and I hope this is a valuable learning

experience in helping them to maximise their HSC results.

Casino High School has appointed Rachel Wall as a Learning and Support teacher and she is doing a magnificent

job. Please contact the school if you wish to talk to Rachel about any wellbeing issues you may have in regards to

your student.

News from the English Faculty

Big World Out There Welcome to our Year 7 parents and carers and many thanks to you for supporting your students in all aspects of learning at Casino High School. Each year the English Faculty looks for events that will support students in the study of English (as well as have some fun!). This year we have three events already planned and booked in. Did you know parents and carers can come along to these events? We love having our parents and carers in the audience and students always appreciate the efforts parents and carers make to get involved.

Speakeasy As you all know, speaking is an important employability skill and it is one that students usually do very well. Each year we invite Marcelle Bernard to deliver her highly popular workshop on Public Speaking to Year 7. Marcelle is entertaining and has a whole bag of tricks she shares with students to help them make the most of their speaking skills. All novels chosen explore a range of cultural perspectives. Students have received their green Assessment Task Sheet which explains the task requirements. This task is due in Week 11 of this term. 200 Word Challenge In order to improve the length and quality of writing, students across Years 7 to 10 are participating in the 200 Word Writing Challenge. Students “challenge” themselves by responding to a topic in 200 words as well as using a range of literary devices to improve their writing. So far topics have included “A time I have had to be resilient is when…..”, “The world would be bleak without the colour red/yellow/green…..” and “The best or worst day of my life was when ….” Wordflyers Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are enrolled in Wordflyers, an online Literacy programme. This program has differentiated activities which allow students to work at their ability, with a review level designed to bring students up to standard. Students also engage with and analyse short high interest, real-world texts with activities and rewards that reinforce learning. Students are asked to bring in their own headphones for their allocated Wordflyer lessons.

News from the English Faculty

Year 8 This term students are studying ideas around Resilience. They read a class novel and identify resilience in their novels for their assessment task. Year 9 Thus far this year, Year 9 has been initiated into the mysteries of Shakespeare and the ongoing relevance of his universal themes dealing with fundamental human experiences. At first our students were put off by the archaic language but, despite themselves, they have been drawn into the dramas under study and many can now quote Shakespeare in context! The assessment for this unit is an essay and most students are well advanced in their preparations for the task. Bard on the Beach plays Macbeth This year we have invited the “Bard on the Beach” company to play Macbeth for Year 9 students. We have invited Bell Shakespeare in past years and thought this company would be a nice change. Bard on the Beach are known for their outdoor performances. At our school it will be in the Hall! https://www.bardonthebeach.net/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc0zQ0UvABw Year 10 The Year 10 students are studying a play called “Children of the Black Skirt”. Their assessment task is to conduct research to develop an extra character for the play, then to write a script for that person. This short scene should add to the themes in the play and reflect contemporary issues or new points of view. Year 11 Year 11 Standard and Advanced English courses are currently completing the Common Module, Reading to Write. This mandatory Module focuses on the correlation between reading and writing and includes a variety of texts including the literary canon. Students adapt these approaches to their own writing. Their study will culminate in a personal Heywire Story and reflection on their own reading and writing over the course of the unit. Year 12 Year 12 are currently sitting their Half Yearly Examinations. We wish them all the best of luck! English Studies This unit focuses on the correlation between reading and writing, teaching students to adapt published writer’s techniques to their own writing. This term’s study will culminate in writing a personal Heywire story and the collection of samples of their writing over the course of the unit into a display folder. This is a mandatory requirement of the course. And One More: Poetry in Action We had our first Poetry in Action last year and have invited them back. Year 11/12 Hospitality Community Engagement

Recently the Hospitality students were given the opportunity to prepare food for the visit to the area by the

Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retired), Governor of New South

Wales, as he met with the NSW Rural Fire Service to discuss and survey the damage from the recent local fires.

The students prepared a variety of food such as slices, nibbles, fruit platters and sandwiches in the school’s

commercial kitchen. The NSW Rural Fire Service also requested student representatives attend on the day to meet

and serve the guests at Tabulam Fire Station. Molly Maloney and Bailey Powell were warmly welcomed by the

Governor as he chatted with them both about their Hospitality studies and the food that they had helped prepare

for the day.

The other students that also assisted in the food preparation were Emily Taylor-Talbot, Deosha Berry, Tayla

Dawson, McKenzie Llewellyn, Chelsea McPaul and Sophie Needham. The students all worked well as a group

producing beautiful food and it is a credit to them all. I would also like to thank Troy Freeburn for assisting on the

day and Mandy and Jennie for helping in the kitchen.

OFFICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL RECEIPTING The school office is able to receipt money from students from 8.30am - 9am, 11.10am - 11.45am Monday to Friday. Parents/Carers may personally come to the front office anytime between 8.30am and 1.30pm. NO MONEY MAY BE RECEIPTED AFTER 1.30PM. Payments may be received at the office via cash, cheque, EFTPOS and payments may be made online through the School Website. What expenses can be paid online? NSW School Vaccination Program 2019

Free vaccine is only available at school to students who have a signed consent form and who commence the vaccine

course while they are in Year 7 (for dTpa or HPV vaccination) or Year 10 (for meningococcal ACWY vaccination).

Students who miss vaccine doses due to absence on the day of the nurses' visit will be offered catch-up vaccination at

subsequent school clinics. Where this is not possible, parents will be advised that free catch-up vaccine is available at

their local GP.

Please note that students who commence HPV vaccination in school clinics in Year 7 but do not complete the course

during the school year may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year 8. Parents will be notified by letter/ or text from

The Public Health Unit if this applies to their child.

Parents who choose to wait for their child to be older before consenting to vaccination will be required to arrange for vaccination at their GP and may have to pay a consultation fee. More information is available about catch-up vaccination. Parents can withdraw consent at any time before vaccination takes place.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended for adolescents by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in a school-based vaccination program.

Parent information kits are being sent home to parents this week, the kits include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement. To consent to vaccination, parents are advised to read all the information provided, complete and sign the consent form and return it to their child's school. Please also ensure that your student eats breakfast on the day of the School Vaccination Clinic.

Year 7 Cooking

Term 1, 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting experience for Year 7 students as they learn to work together in the

kitchen producing nutritious and tasty food. This chicken and vegetable stir fry surprised students; something so

tasty, that was also good for them! Students can look forward to more inspirational ideas and experimentation

with the concept "paddock to plate" over the coming semester.
