SCIENCE FACULTY NEWS

Griffith University

Studying Science provides the technical and problem-solving skills you will need in your job. In

the next decade 75 percent of all jobs will need skills in Science.

On Friday 8th November a select group of Year 10 students travelled to Griffith University on

the Gold Coast. The idea was that the students would experience different activities to increase

their awareness of what is possible at University and also aim to increase their problem solving

skills in order to tackle anything that life in general will throw at them.

Sophie McGregor, Bradon Evans and Seth Hill took part in Analytical Chemistry: Qualitative

Analysis of Sunscreens. In this activity they were asked to provide or select from a range of

different sunscreen/zinc products to compare their relative effectiveness at blocking harmful UV

radiation. They extracted and isolated the active compound from the product using a solvent

and centrifuge/micro filter then using UV-Vis Spectrophotometers, determined the specific

wavelength spectrum that the original product protects us from.

Isabella Ennever, Jasmine Boyd, Emma Jacobsen and Brianna Stewart

took part in Mammalian Skull Analysis. They compared and contrasted

several animal skulls to learn about the animal's evolution and map

different stages in animal diversity. The skull and teeth can tell us a lot

about an animal's physical and behavioural characteristics. Looking at

the teeth can help determine what types of food the animal would

typically have eaten which can help us make predictions about a variety

of animal traits.

Daniel Owen, Adam Anderson, Bradon Evans,

Seth Hill and James Green took part in the Build

Your Own Electronics Devices Activity. They

learned how to operate a soldering iron, construct

a simple analogue circuit and have a bit of fun

building an electronic dice that can be "rolled" by

clicking a button.

Isabella Ennever, Jasmine Boyd, Sienna Scott

and Felicity Peters took part in a totally sweet

research experience. Glycomics; The Sweet and Sticky Language of

Biology. This gave the students an opportunity to hear from leading

scientists, about their ground-breaking research and exciting opportunities available in a

biomedical research career. They learned how medical research plays such a vital role in our

everyday lives and had the opportunity to experience hands-on research, as well as taking part

in a Q&A with students and researchers.

Kayne Blasche, Mackenzie Soutar, Joel Brus and Ezra Frost

worked through the LEGO Building Activity. They were

challenged to build a self-standing tower with a maximum

benefit value within 90 minutes using different types of

building bricks. On completion, the towers were measured

and benefit value calculated based on the number of LEGO

bricks used and design concepts applied.

SCIENCE FACULTY NEWS

Another school had too many students so Casino High School with their fantastic sense of fair

play and community agreed to work as a team with two of these students. The team came a well

deserved second place.

Curtis Gill, Kyle Blain, Lachlan McNeill, Sophie McGregor and

Daniel Owen also took part in this activity in the afternoon.

They produced a great looking tower with solar panels on the

roof using their knowledge and problem solving skills learned

at Casino High School. Their sense of team work also

impressed myself and Mrs Earley.

Kayne Blasche, Mackenzie Soutar, Joel Brus and Adam Anderson

argued their way to first place overall in the Strongest Tower

Challenge. They explored engineering design concepts by building

the strongest tower possible from given materials to a specific height

in the time allocated. The towers were then tested on their ability to

see which tower supported the largest weight. Their tower withstood

nearly 100kg!

Kyle Blain, Curtis Gill, Lachlan McNeill and James Green took part

in this challenge in the morning. They showed that Casino High

School students have great ability in Engineering and Science by

coming first in their session. Their tower held a mass of nearly 80kg!

Sara Cole, Angela Gawiran and Ezra Frost were the third team to

take part in this challenge. Their tower didn’t reach the dizzying

heights of grandeur of the others but their tower was fantastic

looking and their design was complemented on by the judges.

Unfortunately the glue let them down.

Emma Jacobsen, Brianna Stewart, Sara Cole and Angela Gawiran

took part in the Build An Autonomous Chat Box Activity; have you

ever received an automatic response to your queries on Facebook

messenger? In this workshop they created a similar version of Chat

Box/Messenger and coded creative instructions to receive an

automated response.

Students had a great day and were an absolute credit to Casino

High School. They were all surprised by how spread out the Griffith

University campus is and how good the facilities are. They were

well mannered and completed every activity to the best of their

ability. Mrs Earley and I were very impressed with them all.

ENGLISH NEWS

Poem by Brielle Wenham Year 9 No one cares about the power of speech All they care about is going to the beach Not about how far their words will reach But speech is a leech It sticks and holds on to every person that it meets The ones who don’t think that they can greet their ability to speak But look at Hitler He had men And his men had guns Guns with bullets that could go faster than a cheetah can run He used his words to create ruin Ruin that blew in the houses of innocent people Sons were against sons And their sons against their sons Until it was an endless line of sons hating sons And we wonder why we hate the Sun Ruin was the start of a revolution in evolution A revolution caused by speech Abominable was his actions Misused power was his downfall But it’s not always like that Just remember Letters are people Without them cities would be like unplanted seeds Waiting for another’s kindness to give them life Words are like hidden cities Waiting with baited breath To see who will unearth their long forgotten secrets But speech is an empire Consuming every person, plant or object in its path And you You are the conqueror You have the power to change the world You have control over people, cities and empires Just the same as you have control over letters, words and speech You have the power to change the world.
