During Semester 1 the PBL team were at work consulting staff, students and community about our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) expectations. PBL is a positive framework through which the school(staff and students) are taught which behaviours are expected in order to create the best environment for learning. While we still have work to do before our official launch we are proud to announce that our school expectations will be:

Respect

Inclusion

Safety

Effort

Today we had our first PBL lesson where we were all reminded of our school mobile phone expectations and enjoyed some light entertainment from some of the staff at our morning assembly! Thank you to parents for continuing to remind your children that all phones and earphones are off and out of sight before they enter the classroom. Remember parents, to please call the office if you need to contact your child during class times or for emergencies (please do not call your child unless it is break time).

News from the annual Aboriginal STEM( science, technology, engineering and maths)

Youth Development Camp 2019 at Lake Ainsworth

From the 3rd to the 5th of June, I was privileged to attend a STEM Youth

Development Camp at Lake Ainsworth. Throughout the three days, myself

and other members of my group participated in activities that surrounded

science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We learnt about the

aerodynamics of a boomerang and were then challenged to throw one. Mine

didn’t come back. We created shapes like stars, spears, tree stumps and fish

using pieces of string. We went for an on country tour through the bush

where we learnt about the different plants, the seasons and animal tracks.

There was an activity where we learnt how to weave a bracelet, and I stayed

back at the end to learn how to do a basket. We discovered the best method

and wood to use when starting a fire through experiments where we rubbed

wood together in various ways to see how hot it would get. We dived deep

into the fourth dimension and learnt about all the different dimensions in

space. Overall I thought that it was a great three days and an amazing

experience in which I hope to be able to participate again next year.

Brielle Wenham, Year 9

This camp was organised by the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc. It is a free event and

will run again next year. It is open to any Aboriginal students interested in learning about STEM. This

year over 100 students from local primary and high schools attended. I enjoyed my experience at this

camp and learnt about how traditional Aboriginal knowledge and culture can be incorporated into STEM

education and enterprise.

I am looking forward to a larger group of students from Casino High School attending next year.

Numbers will be limited and expression of interest will be open in early 2020.

Ms Hatzimanolis, Science Teacher.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge

Last term Casino High School students and staff were given the opportunity to

participate in the 10 Week Sporting Challenge. The Challenge started in Term 2 Week

3 and will finish in Week 2 this term. There are over 410,000 students and 13,000 staff registered across

NSW who are participating in the Sporting Challenge this year.

All Year 7 and Year 8 students will be partaking in this 10 Week Challenge as part of their core PDHPE

lessons and all other students have the option to register and complete the Challenge.

We currently have 26 staff members who have nominated to participate so staff and students can

motivate each other to be more active.

What is the 10 Week Challenge?

All NSW Public Schools are invited to participate in a 10 week physical activity challenge period which

aims to have more students, more active, more often. To achieve this participants were required to

track the number of minutes/hours of physical activity they do every week by completing a logbook

which is provided to those students who register. The physical activity could include organised sport,

PDHPE lessons, riding a bike or even going for a walk with the dog.

Do I get anything for doing it?

All students who submit their completed logbooks after the 10 Week Challenge will receive a certificate

from the NSW Premier recognising their efforts in participating, and can receive either a bronze, silver,

gold or diamond award.

All participating students at Casino High School will go into the draw to win some prizes to celebrate

their achievements.

Any students requiring further information should speak to Mr Yager in the PDHPE staffroom.

Olympian Visit In Week 3

Hannah Campbell-Pegg will be representing

Australia in the sport of Luge at the Winter

Olympics in Tokyo 2020. Our Year 10 cohort and

members of our Year 9 TAP(Talented Athlete

Program) will have the opportunity to meet an

Olympian and learn what it takes to participate

at the highest level of competition.

Nations of Origin

During the school holidays a group of students from Casino High School and students from surrounding

schools in the Bundjalung area went to Raymond Terrace to compete at the annual Nations of Origin

Rugby League 7s competition.

Nations of Origin is a multifaceted sport, cultural, education and leadership program which is held

annually in July, in close proximity to NAIDOC Week. The program has four main components:

reconciliation, education, cultural identity and sport.

The Casino High School students representing the Bundjalung area were Felicity Peters, Lateah

Lambeth, Taleah Jackson, Tim McGrady, Clayton Roberts, Kirell Robinson, Isiah Freeburn and Malcom

Randall.

Over the two day competition the boys team played four games, winning two and being narrowly

defeated in the other two, missing out on finals by one ladder position.

The girls team played three games which resulted in two losses (Biripi and Dharawal) and one win

against Barkinji. Many of the girls in the team had never tackled before or played rugby league but

played exceptionally well in the circumstances.

A special thankyou to both Ms Alyssa Goode and Mr

Shannon Love for their care and dedication in coaching and

supporting our sports people over the holiday break.

Year 11 First Aid

The Year 11 PDHPE class participated in First Aid training as part of the PDHPE Preliminary Course. The

course provided students with training and certification in providing First Aid. First Aid courses help

build useful skills, help save lives and minimise the impact of injuries. Students learnt everything from

CPR, bandaging and anaphylaxis management to removing obstructions from a choking child.

Congratulations to the following students who attained their First Aid Certificate:

Term 3 is building to be yet another busy time for our teaching staff in providing opportunities for our

students to further develop a range of skills and experiences to support a variety of community and

school-based events, whilst representing Casino High. These include:

Week 2 - Year 11 SLR students performing the role of Officials at the Northern Rivers Zone Athletics Carnival next Monday at Riverview Park, South Lismore.

Week 2 & 3 - Student Officials to support staff and students in running both Casino Public School and Small Schools Athletics Carnivals. Level 1 Rugby League Certificate and performing the role of badged referees for Country Rugby League’s locally held competition.

Week 5 - Boys Ed Leadership Camp for Year 9 and Year 10 mentors and Parent Information Evening.

Week 7 - Year 11 PDHPE overnight Outdoor Recreation Camp to Nightcap National Park.

Let’s Dance!

Year 7 to Year 10 students will be working on their dance steps over the next three weeks in PDHPE

class in preparation for their Dance Assessment. Dance provides the opportunity to enjoy movement

and develop positive social interactions with others.

Year 12 Exploring Early Childhood

Exploring Early Childhood students Trenell Williams, Kelly Woods and Jada Walker completed a task at

the end of Term 2 which required them to design and present a children’s book. Students produced high

quality work in which a modified tale of ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ and a colouring-in book was made

using replacement characters of native Australian animals and using traditional Bundjalung language

translated into English. Another student also created a farm based children’s book, which focused on

counting and songs to practise colour recognition. Congratulations to all the girls on their hard work and

an excellent result for their HSC assessment task!
