Cashew Market Commentaries from Experts
Cashew market – India
Cashew kernel price -FOB Tuticorin- for W320 touched the historical high of USD 4.55-4.65 per lb,
while W240 was traded at USD 4.90-4.95 per lb and W450 at USD 4.45-4.50 per lb.
In the domestic markets too prices have climbed up further with W320 Mangalore traded at INR 810
per kg, while that of Kollam traded at INR 736 per kg and in Delhi the same was traded at INR 790 per
kg.
Prices of other grades viz., JH, K, S, SWP and LWP has also gained by about INR 10-20 per kg when
compared with that of last week.
DCCD (Directorate of Cashew nut and Cocoa Development) is proposed to organise a national
conference on Cashew to commensurate its golden jubilee celebration at Panjim, Goa in association
with the Dept. of agriculture, Govt. of Goa on 7th and 8th November 2016.
Indian raw cashew imports in September totalled at 75,893 tonnes. In the first nine months of 2016,
raw cashew nuts imports totalled 617,239 tonnes.
IVC tops the Indian RCN imports list with a share of 30%, followed by Tanzania at 15%, Guinea Bissau
at 13.5% and Benin at 12%.
Indian cashew exports in September 2016 totalled 4,432 tonnes. In the first nine months of 2016
Indian kernel exports totalled 57,700 tonnes as against 85,940 tonnes exported during the same
period in 2015.
In the first six months starting from April-16 to Sep-16, India had exported 36,072 tonnes as against
51,661 tonnes exported during the same period.
As rightly mentioned by CashewInfo.com (Volume 17, Issue 21), IVC – Coted’ ivoire is estimated to
have produced around 650,000 tonnes of RCN in 2016 as against 700,000 tonnes produced in 2015.
Indonesia
The Raw cashew nut for 51-53 lbs is being traded at around USD 2300 per tonne. Mostly Vietnamese
buyers are active in the Indonesian market and the Indian buyers are reluctant due to prevailing
higher prices.
Tanzania
In Tanzania raw cashew nut auctions are going to commence from 15th
October. This season
Tanzanian crop is expected to be higher owing to good climatic conditions so far. Cashew nut crop as
well as count is expected to be higher in Tanzania. Prices are expected to be higher in the region of
USD 1800 and USD 2000 per tonne and may even exceed.

USA
The USA cashew kernel imports in August-16 have declined to 13,620 tonnes as against 16,734 tonnes
imported during August-2015. In the first eight months of 2016 overall USA kernel imports totaled
91,721 tonnes as against 101399 tonnes imported during the same period in 2015.
Vietnam occupies the top slot with 74% of the total kernels imported by USA, followed by India with a
share of 10.76% and Brazil at 6.40%.
Currency
Indian rupee is likely to stay in the recent range of 66.20 and 67 going forward. The expected surge in
dollar index in the coming weeks may result in rupee weakening further despite good monsoon, and in
general expectation of good GDP growth in excess of 7.5% in 2016-17.
Brazilian Real may gain further below 3.0-2.8 levels going forward for the first time since April-2015, as
the new government is showing steps to contain the budget deficit.

International Commentaries
The cashew market remains very steady according to our reports. Arriving supplies from the southern
hemisphere crops may eventually alleviate the prices of RCN as crop forecasts in East Africa and Brazil
are good, but we do not expect any real correction in prices until the arrival of new crop in the
northern hemisphere during Feb/March-2017. It is interesting to read reaction to RCN prices and
pressure on processors. In India there are some production development projects, which will
hopefully be successful, but we read in Tanzania trees being removed by farmers who receive low
prices due to the marketing system in place there. It seems to indicate the importance of good
government policies in improving production. This is especially so with many West African
governments considering new policies on cashews. The irony of uncompetitive African processors
asking for government for policy protection on the one hand and claiming that high prices of kernels
will damage demand on the other hand strikes us as showing the need for a real international
organised policy advocacy for the sector.

Market continued to remain active with W240 and W320 are mainly traded. W240 traded at USD
4.80/4.85, W320 at USD 4.35/4.40, W450 at USD 4.25 per lb fob for Oct and Nov shipment, sold by
reliable packers. Packers’ prices were not reduced and they tried to offer few cents per lb higher
compared to current prices traded. Prices from top and reliable packers were high, but buyers were
not ready to pick up the offers. USA continued to be the leading import country during the week, but
most of trades were done for selected packers. Demand for brokens was weak but prices offered were
not weak. This might be supporting from whole grades demands. There are a lot of brokens from the
local market as packers could not sell while offers are much expensive to buyers. Sooner or later,
prices of brokens will be adjusted.

It is reported that china is covering goods at good prices but we are unsure about how big quantity is?.
This is not the time for China to buy big quantity as it will have plenty of time to buy later to meet its
China Lunar New Year.
RCN prices are firm, while quality is most concern for buyer together with high prices offered. so many
packers are not willing to confirm the offers as no parity between the kernels and RCN prices.

Temperature is increasing in Northern Mozambique with Maximum up to 35 degree Celsius, giving
ideal conditions for good Cashew Crop to develop. Only informal small traders buying has started in
Cabo Delegado Province, with price around 52 Meticais per kg. The official Launch date for cashew
campaign in Nampula will be on 27th October. The current local currency rate is around 80 Meticais
against 1 USD. In October , there are chances of more weakening of local currency. This year expected
to me be more cut throat competition to procure cashew, even Chinese buyers are expected to
participate in campaign this year, which will make local processors life a bit difficult.

The market went up during 2016 from levels around USD 3.35-3.50 per lbs up to USD 4.10-4.30 per lbs
basis FOB (for the main grade WW320). The main reason for this was the shortage of supply added on
to the minor quality of the raw seeds. Due to the minor quality of the raw seeds, processing costs are
increasing and processors are doing concessions to quality to make sure they can fill in their
commitments and signed contracts. This execution of border line quality cashewnutkernels is creating
more quality issues at destination as packers and industries are not happy and disapproving lots which
is causing a continuous demand in the market to fill up gaps.
Another reason was that most buyers in the beginning of the year were expecting the market to ease.
At the cashew conference in Dubai in February, a lot of buyers were anticipating on good crops on the
Northern Hemisphere giving a boost in supply and kernel prices to come down. The opposite
happened and buyers started to enter the market to cover their commitments, pushing prices up.
For a sustainable cashew market this is not good, where we have seen a stable growing consumer
demand (4-7% annually), the 2016 prices might disturb this growing curve. We are not seeing this to
happen right now, but a lot of contracts for 2017 with the supermarkets will be closed during October
and November, the consumer will only see the higher prices only from January 2017 onwards and
consumer demand might be hit than. Packers and industries will be cautious covering their forwards
keeping this in mind and that hopefully will help the market a little bit to find his feet. Stable prices are
creating growth. The volatile market of 2016 will disturb this stable growth.
On the supply side we have to wait for the Southern Hemisphere crop. Hopefully this will give some
relief, but so far the prices has not come down yet (keep in mind that Southern Hemisphere crops will
only give 20-25% of the total world supply). Tanzania and Mozambique –who together might produce
around 200,000 mton of raw seeds are having a growing domestic processing industry (Mozambique
will process approx. 50-70% locally in very good factories and Tanzania will process around 20-30%
|6|

locally). Brazil is not exporting raw seeds, so India and Vietnam in the coming months will mainly
depend on Indonesia and Tanzania new RCN crop.
The prices for Indonesian raw seeds are around Usd 2000 per mton (the equivalent of kernels WW320
would be around Usd 4.50-4.70 per lbs) and is not looking promising as there is a lot of demand for
those raw seeds.
Tanzanian prices will be known during October/November while Mozambique only will export –
although not of impact in the international market- during February/March of next year.
The crops in the Northern Hemisphere will only become available from February onwards until
June/July. Hopefully the main producing origins in West Africa and India will have good crops bringing
the peace back in the market. (A note to make here is that a number of West African producing origins
are working on protection of their own industry with export taxes or other instruments. This is very
good for the local African processors but might give pressure on the Indian and Vietnamese processors
buying from West Africa!)
On the demand side we have seen an annual growth of 4-7%, which is expected to take a hit in 2017.
What the impact will be is hard to say, as cashewnut is still a very favourable nut, well appreciated by
the consumers, mainly for snacking. The cashewnut has to compete –especially now and in the near
future- with the almonds, which came down in price and due to a good crop and the prices are not
going to rise in a hurry. Packers are trying to decrease the % of cashewnutkernels in their mixes and fill
up with more almonds. The cashewnut industry has to find his way out on how to handle this, but as
the producing / processing countries are divided worldwide, generic marketing will not be easy.
FDA-FSMA-Another very important issue that the cashew sector has to work on is its food safety. A lot
of factories are not ready for buyer’s requirements. Supermarket chains and industries are requiring
more and more food safety guarantees to avoid claims and black listings, especially in the US (with
Europe expected to follow shortly), as the Food Modernization Act is very high on the USDA & FDA
agenda. The cashew industry has to be prepared for that. Now, most of the time it is preferred to have
HACCP and BRC certified factories, in the not too long future, this will become a requirement and
packers need to be audited accordingly and only approved/certified factories be allowed to deliver
certain customers. We are aware that in Europe some supermarket chains are not approving the
origin of the nuts but the factory already!
A ‘threat’ for the cashew industry is the mind-set of processors. Are they a processor or are they a
trader? To build your market and customer base, you have to understand the requirements of the
buyers (not just fill them in!). A processor needs to know why he is doing something to guarantee his
specifications and food safety. A lot of small traders turned into processors over the past years
(especially in Vietnam) damaging the image of the industry with small factories not qualified to handle
food. Those processors expect to get a better return on processing than they had on trading. This is
different than a quality minded processors whose goal is to set and build long term relationships with
|7|

customers who are satisfied with the product he is delivering! A processor needs to earn money but
his main goal should be to get the best factory possible to guarantee specifications and food safety!
Our experience of the past 2 decades is that this creates a sustainable business, giving customers the
comfort they are looking for and guaranteeing them a long term relationship.
The consumption of nuts in Europe is expected to grow as nuts in general (including cashews) are still
recommended as a very healthy snack food and most importantly, replacement of meat. The
academic research supported by the International Nut Council is very important to make the
consumer aware of the health claims of nuts and they are successful. The only ‘cloud’ on the
continuous growth could be the volatility of prices creating uncertainty with packers (who quite easily
can replace cashews) but also the R&D departments of industry, who usually work on projects, which
takes months and sometimes years to find his way from the first idea to consumer. When the nut
price is volatile, the product can become too expensive and lose interest. Also because of this, a more
or less stable market is the only guarantee for a sustainable cashew trade.

Almond report- California and New Delhi
The market in Delhi's Khari Baoli closed for private packers for the week ending October 8th 2016 at
INR 15600-15900/40 Kg for 70% Sliding Scale Basis, which is equivalent to USD 2.16-2.187/lbs of
origin's equivalent, with BD commanding a premium of over 2% the private packers. FAQ Kernels
dropped to INR 575-580/kg with Hand Picked trading over INR 590-600/kg. Sonora Kernels are in good
demand trading over INR Rs.700/Kg and up to INR 1000/kg depending upon size and colour as
required for gift packing's.
Demand for the kernels has been decent though not very encouraging or as per expectations. Traders
are now banking on the last 15 days sales of the festival season. The other way to look around is that
the supplies of the NP In shell's is in excess to the demand and prices for the locally traded Badam ( NP
Inshell's) is not going up despite as stated decent demand of the kernels due to August shipment of
around 34.5 Million Lbs/1100 Containers. Further, market is expecting higher shipment numbers even
for September shipments, which will be announced during this week, though it may not be as big as
August for India and accordingly the traders have started discounting the current trades. But, on the
other side California prices have been very high and are being quoted around USD 2.40/Lbs.The
increased prices will surely give boost to Indian sentiments going forward.
There has been very little demand from India to California during the last 2-3 weeks largely for two
reasons, as most of the traders are busy selling their goods and the difference between the
replenishment costs are high. Many of the opportunity traders have opted not sell and liquidate at
these prices, and have remained non active. Further the Delhi markets in the last 15 days have seen 2-

3 traders defaulting ,filing insolvency worth 3 million US$ causing panic and cash crunch which has
impacted the prevailing positive sentiment. Importers are now hesitant to offer In Shell's to these C
grade traders and most of the importers out of panic have started shelling the Almonds and selling
them out of the counters.
Pistachio prices have been falling like a pack of cards and many of the importers /traders have lost of
2$/kg in the last 1 month alone. Iran has been offering cheap material as they seem to be afraid of the
size of American Crop.
Walnuts have been trading at more than decent prices despite the replenishment cost being cheaper
as t he material from new crop will only get shipped in t he month of Oct and will reach India In
November End but it is expected that the shipments will be huge as most of the opportunity traders
bought from Ca looking at the domestic prices which were high due to shortage of supplies in the last
3-4 months. Today the Markets in India are trading over at INR 500/kg for In shell and Light Amber
Halves at INR 1300/kg, But once the cargo starts landing in India the prices will be half of today due to
excess supplies, and landed costs.
Cashew Prices are historically high and show no sign of softening, LWP/Broken or 4 Pcs are trading
$1.5/kg higher than the FAQ Almond Kernel Prices with W240 at INR 950-1000/kg and W320 at INR
850-875/kg. Heard that some business in Exports being traded @ $4.75/Lb for 320's.
The talk of the rains in California has already begun and many are speculating on less rains which
should if happen will drive the prices to further new high's.

Face to Face at World Cashew Convention 2016
We can reduce the cost of production by mechanization and automation of the industry, for which
the existing industrialists have to invest huge money; they need support and financial assistance
from the government as well as from the financial industry/institutions
P. Sundaram, Chairman CEPCI
This is a transcript of the exclusive interview with Mr. P. Sundaram, Chairman CEPCI taken on the
occasion of World Cashew Convention 2016
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
What are the steps taken by CEPCI to boost cashew kernel exports from India?
Presently the cashew export industry is facing a lot of issues and challenges; year 2015 has
witnessed a sharp decline in exports mainly due to low production and other connected activities
and problems in export industry. Export incentive is a solution only for a part of the issue faced by
the industry, which includes many bigger issues. Availability of raw cashew nuts in reasonable and
parity price is the main issue, but unfortunately since 2014 there was a steep increase in the price of
RCN. 1. Production cost in India is very high when compared to that of its competing countries like
Vietnam and producing countries like Africa, so we should try to convert the industry from manual
to mechanization. We can reduce the cost of production by mechanization and automation of the
industry, for which the existing industrialists have to invest huge money, they need support and
financial assistance from the government as well as from the financial industry/institutions. Grant’s
currently that we are receiving from government of India is of about 35%, which is not sufficient to
meet the requirement for the full mechanization of the cashew sector
The high price of RCN, India imports more than 9 lakh tones of RCN from other countries (2014 and
2015) and a domestic production of 7 lakh tones of cashew is required to meet the installed capacity
of the Indian factories. Initially it was only from Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and
Maharashtra but now the production is spread over all parts of the country, but still we are
dependent on imported RCN from African countries.

CEPCI is actively involved in nutritional research study of cashew i.e., Cashews consumption on the
health of Diabetic. Can u kindly elaborate on it
INC has done a research and study on health and nutritional benefits of cashews and the article has
turned out to be positive. At the same time, CEPCI has taken an initiative to make an study on
consuming cashews and its effect on diabetic patients, the primary result has come out and its
positive and we hope that the final result will benefit the whole cashew industry. Consumption and
exports of the cashew kernels will increase and the demand for kernels will increase and hence it
ensures a good future for the cashew industry.
Do you see any scope of increasing export incentive for cashews from Ministry of Commerce in the
coming month so as to boost cashew exports from India?
It depends on the government of India and if the government of India is very particular to give more
incentives to the industry off course the exporters will be encouraged and exports will be increase
substantially
Achievements of CEPCI in 2015 and goals for 2016
CEPCI as this a diamond year we have been celebrating a year round programs and we hope that the
diabetic studies will be positive and we can make use of this result to increase the exports and the
foreign buyers will be convinced that cashews are healthy for consumption and we visualize the
cashew exports to go up.

Are you planning to invest in new processing factory or modernize existing cashew processing
factory in India?
Cashew cultivation is expanding into new areas in India. Cashew processing too is being taken up in
non-traditional areas. Entrepreneurs face several questions when starting a new project, such as,
which technology to choose, what should be the scale, should we choose manual vs. semi-automatic
vs. fully automatic processing lines and where to set up the plant, what is the demand in my region
and what is the forecast and what are the risks in investing and so on.
The consulting arm of Cashewinfo.com would be happy to assist businesses in conducting Techno-
Economic Feasibility studies for either establishing a new factory or modernizing an existing factory.
Let us know your requirements, we would provide you with best advice. It is wise to talk to us before
investing your money. Please write to [email protected] or talk to Swapna at +91 93428 40609.
