The challenge

Midas Construction were awarded an £11 million build project to construct student accommodation in Cardiff. The three-floor de-velopment boasts 281 rooms including more than 115 self-contained studio apartments as well as a number of modern kitchens. Around 100 Midas staff were working on site over the year.

Cygnus® 3 paired with a 150 kVA diesel generator. The hybrid power system was set on a timer to provide completely silent power over-night, whilst automatically switching the diesel generator on and off.

Over a 4-month period, Cygnus® 3 ran for over 74% of time deliver-ing over 2,500 hours of silent power. This in turn saved over 34,000 Litres of diesel fuel, equating to over 91 Tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The project was located within the city immediately adjacent to both residential and commercial buildings. Whilst the office and welfare cabins opposite the site were connected to mains power, Midas need-ed power on site for the crane, heating within the crane cab, aviation lighting and perimeter lighting. Situated adjacent to the site was a recording studio, which was aggrieved by the 24hr noise of the diesel generator running.

Midas Construction were also keen to find ways of reducing operating costs and the carbon footprint of site operations.

Very quiet, so useful for the neighbouring properties as running a conventional generator would have been a distur-bance, especially during the night. Spare capacity during the day was used at night for lighting on the perimeter lane and to power the site security system. Proved very useful and did what it said it would.
