JMJJMTRANSFORMING BUSINESS — RAMCO’S PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SOLUTION GOES A LONG WAY Today while technological developments are taking place rapidly on a daily basis, it is not only important to have the right solution to help aid your business, but it is equally important to ensure that the solution you use leverages on technology, to the fullest possible extent to give you that distinct edge. MJB Wood Group Inc. had to ensure that amidst all the developments they would not be left behind. The company had been a leader in the wood products industry since 1959, but somehow somewhere, something was lacking. This they realized and set off on a journey of reinventing themselves to stay ahead of the pack.

BACKGROUNDMJB Wood Group Inc., formerly Tumac Wood Components, started off as a subsidiary of the Tumac Lumber Company Inc., established in 1959 by Paul McCracken and Bill Macpherson. Originally focused on wholesaling industrial lumber, the company expanded to international markets early on. In 1998, MJB Wood Group spun off as a separate company in order to grow its value-added components line of business through its own manufacturing capabilities. Today, MJB Wood Group offers a variety of wood products including panel products, cabinet and furniture components, door and window components and millwork. MJB has global reach, with 125 employees and $200 million in revenue. Their nine sales offices, company-owned manufacturing facility and hundreds of warehouse logistics and value partners are strategically located throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, China, and South America.

In addition to their wide array of products, MJB delivers a full range of innovative supply chain solutions through its integrated value network of sales,

distribution, logistics and manufacturing partners. They provide their customers value-added services ranging from customized inventory management solutions and warehouse distribution, to technology that provides real-time access and 24x7 visibility.

LOST IN THE WOODSWithin the company, MJB Wood Group (MJB) is separated into 22 independent divisions each having its own parameters to monitor such as inventory investment limits, gross margins, receivables, etc. Imagine having to deal with 22 different sets of reports, volumes of data for monitoring and the like, not to mention the number of business decisions that needed to be taken! A lot of time was spent on getting all the necessary information together and this led to a lot of managerial discomfort, naturally.

Added to this, to comply with corporate financial reporting requirements, the company indulged in a laborious manual process of consolidating the accounts of different companies. This process involved a lot of re-entering of data in a multitude of spreadsheets and was prone to errors in data entry. A number of staff were employed and on the whole, to get the reports together was a difficult and costly affair for MJB.

Overall the company had all the data but employed extra staff to manually consolidate it into reports that were not 100% accurate.

GETTING THEIR ACT TOGETHERSo, what was the need of the hour? Several were identified. MJB required a way of controlling the efforts spent in generating the reports of the 22 independent divisions. As time progressed, finding a way to deal with consolidation of data for performance management became an issue that demanded immediate attention and MJB went

about identifying potential ways to solve their problems. What they needed was a solution that could automate the monitoring and reporting, saving manual effort and cost while ensuring total accuracy of information which was used to take critical management decisions and provide valuable insights into the future of their business. Here is when Ramco’s DecisionWorks came into the picture.

DECISIONWORKS FOR DECISIONS AT WORKRamco DecisionWorks solution offered MJB more than what they required. At a time when the need for business analytics was felt more than ever and as customers and markets rapidly changed requirements and drove the need for agility and responsiveness, MJB needed to rely on its business systems to provide insights into dynamic environments. Ramco DecisionWorks could deliver critical insights that meant the difference between success and failure. Spanning from Business Intelligence to Alerts and Workflow to Data Warehousing and ETL, Ramco DecisionWorks could provide a window to customers and markets to drive good business decisions.

That was not all. Coupled with Ramco’s model-driven platform, Ramco DecisionWorks could provide business intelligence through the use of dashboards, key performance indicators, and a balanced scorecard framework. Leveraging pre-built business services assets used in application assembly, Ramco DecisionWorks also helped provide a ready-made reporting and analytics capability for business applications.

Comprising four functional capabilities–Business Decisions, Business Integrator, Planning & Budgeting and Analytical Workflow, Ramco DecisionWorks is a complete suite for Corporate Performance Management that aids planning, performance analysis and decision-making, and MJB welcomed the new solution with open arms.

From there on, there was no looking back. The solution was implemented in MJB to aid division heads in monitoring performance for their respective divisions and also to provide access to key reports in different functional areas. A scorecard for each division with key performance indicators covering sales, inventory, and receivables was configured. In addition, the scorecard also contained multidimensional reports covering the functional areas mentioned above and a multidimensional analysis of the division’s profit over time.

The solution’s intelligence drastically reduced timelines in bringing the benefits to MJB. They ended up saving time, saving a lot of effort and as a result, they ended up saving money. Business intelligence scored all the way!
