Glenelg Tram Overpass
South Road, Adelaide
Case Study
Fine Print
The following 3D images are captures from the working visual interactive (real-time) model of the
Glenelg Tram Overpass Project.
They are representative of design and usability elements at various stages throughout the process.
They are intended for information purposes only regarding how UC visual models can support
multiple aspects of visioning, validation, communication to support project progress.

“keen to ensure that the local community fully understood the impact of the tram overpass project on their urban environment”
Community Engagement is mobile and effective with UC 3D visual interactive
“DTEI had presented plans and artists impressions to the community however
it was not until we were able to engage Urban Circus and work with their team to
develop a fully interactive model of
the overpass that we gained the support of the local residents”.
Artists Impressions don’t have the credibility of a Virtual Model
View from neighbours’ houses critical in consultation
The lounge-room window view
Views from every household, front yard, doorway, window under multiple environmental conditions
Transparent 3D visibility in real-time reduces anxiety, builds certainty.
Immediately answer the question “How will this visually impact me from every part of my house and land?”
View from every neighbours’ house available for efficient engagement
View from every adjacent property critical for credibility and progress

Engineering Plans are hard to understand – even when ‘photoshopped’ like this.
UC “plan-views” are easy to produce and understand
UC model true orthographic plan view – with tram roofs clipped
UC virtual model plan view with strong perspective - and tram roofs clipped
Engineering sectional views are difficult to contextually understand
UC sectional tools can be very revealing – from any angle

Alerting errors or gaps in design drawings.
3D design validation.
PrimaryCommunity anxiety immediately resolved with interactive consultation sessions (personal and town meeting) Proposal supported for rapid progress.
SecondarySafety and quality improved around, on and under stairwells around columns, corners. Landscaping, balcony, railings, sightlines, clearances.CPTED - issues improved.Usability analysis - platform, approaches and pathways.Neighbours review - every door, fence, yard and window.Bike path usability – experience and demonstrationDynamic shadow analysis - neighbours and public spaces.Lift well VIS – height impact issues quickly resolved.Visuals in brochures, web, media, awards, news etc.
Tertiary Auditing - visual evidence recorded of options.Collaboration increased.Verification of use of adjacent spaces and their overlooking, usage, relations, materials, signage visibility, inter-relations and multi-user functionality.Materials and finishes validation/iterationWayfinding verificationMultimodal review - integration between tram and busFull experience of structure: all streets, near/far, underneath.Experience from within rolling stock, in motion.Driver experience on approach, in motion, at speed.Maintenance features / access verified.Project confidence increased.
Project Benefits
"The Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) was keen to ensure that the local community fully understood the impact of the tram overpass project on their urban environment.DTEI had presented plans and artists impressions to the community however it was not until we were able to engage Urban Circus and work with their team to develop a fully interactive model of the overpass that we gained the support of the local residents. With the interactive model, residents and users were able to fully appreciate the extent of our project and its impacts on their local street. They were able to identify existing landmarks and vistas through the model and all questions and concerns were able to be addressed. The Urban Circus model is a tool that allows the accurate detail of the project to be clearly presented. DTEI also used the tool to identify and explore areas within the design where improvements were required. This further contributed to the development of a final design for a project which will be both safe in operation as well as a pedestrian friendly space. The team at Urban Circus were client focussed in the development of the model and provided regular updates of expenditure against budget. The project team would be pleased to engage Urban Circus for future projects where a high level of community understanding is required."Paul Gelston, Project Director, Glenelg Tram Overpass ProjectDepartment for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure, South Australia
