Casa Pacifica Alumnus Trucking His Way to Success! had Brooks was only seven years old when he was removed from his home and placed at Casa Pacifica. As with many of our kids, Chad was in and out of our care, bouncing between foster homes and group homes, but always returning to his “home base” – Casa Pacifica. He ended up staying at a group home in nearby Oxnard for a few years, before returning to Casa Pacifica’s Transitional Youth Services Program (TYS). One high point during his young life was when Chad met Jack Beauchamp, a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). Chad was Jack’s fourth child through the CASA program. Jack and his wife Jan were “empty-nesters” and were looking to get involved with kids again. Having Jack as a “constant” in his life was beneficial in providing Chad some stability in his ever-changing environment. Close to his 19 th birthday, Chad decided to move to Indiana to live with his dad. Less than a year later, Chad called Jack and said, “I want to come home.” After going through the interview process again, he returned to Casa Pacifica and reentered the TYS Program. “I had a lot of issues even when I turned 18. I still didn’t know how to save money or keep track of tasks I needed to do. School was also a big problem, I was failing a lot of classes. I was just not being responsible,” Chad admitted. “The TYS program really taught me how to be an adult and helped me transition into adulthood. They helped me write a resume, finish high school, and focus on things I really needed to get done.” Chad went on to say that even beyond the TYS program, he felt that everyone at Casa Pacifica really cared about his well-being and success. “Robert in maintenance would always take the time to talk with me and see how I was doing,” said Chad. “That meant a lot.” Chad’s mentor Jack praised the fact that Casa Pacifica’s TYS program requires kids to be either in an education program or working full-time. “The money being tied to school or work is something the kids understand.” Chad was the first Casa Pacifica youth to intern with Chef Jeff in the campus kitchen. It was Chad’s first job experience of any kind. Chad went through the interview process along with a few other kids and was chosen for the three month internship. “Chad is a great kid! We started him out washing dishes, then cutting fruit, and eventually graduating to slicing meat on the deli slicer,” said Chef Jeff of his former intern. “He had a great attitude and always came ready to work.” Chad even started helping Chef Jeff deliver caterings and serve in the campus Cantina. “When Chad started the internship he didn’t even know how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. But the thing with that kid is, once you taught him something, he never forgot.” Eventually, Chad asked Chef Jeff to help him sign up on some job boards and apply to local fast food joints as well as Ralphs grocery store. Chad landed a job in Ralph’s deli department and rain or shine rode his bike to work everyday until he eventually saved enough to buy a car. “The whole process of having a job and learning responsibility really built up his confidence,” said both Chef Jeff and his mentor Jack. “It was great experience for him.” A few days before Chad’s 21 st birthday, the day he would legally age out of extended foster care, the Casa Pacifica staff gathered on the front lawn to throw him a big party. “It was so neat to see all the staff that had watched Chad grow up. Everyone stood up and said something nice about him,” said Jack. “Everyone from Chef Jeff to Robert in maintenance came to celebrate Chad and wish him well.” Heartlines Heartlines C INSIDE: President’s Message CEO’s Message Page 2 Annual Fundraising Page 6 Children’s Events Page 8 Construction Update Page 10 & 11 Upcoming Events Page 16 Fall 2017 Volume 17 • Number 1 Chad Brooks heading out to hit the road in his big rig. “Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts.” ~Arnold Bennett

ast week, a national behavioral healthcare publication interviewed me about what I see as the biggest “market” changes in the last five years and, in

order to maintain stability, what are the biggest challenges ahead?

California has undertaken a massive effort to reform foster care. In the works forwell over a decade, the reform became law in January of this year. The eyes ofthe nation, and even in other countries are on California. Virtually every aspect ofhow we treat kids and what we do is changing. With this major overhaul offoster care underway, the Affordable Care Act continues to effect majorchanges in the way in which mental health services are delivered, and theACA’s potential replacement suggests even more changes to come.

The California foster care reform focuses on “family-based care,” closing group homes andreplacing them with Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTP), and emergencyshelter placements for up to 10 days. In addition, the commercial insurance world islooking at alternatives to hospitalizations for adolescent psychiatric emergencies, schools are

dealing with students who exhibit extreme behaviors at younger and youngerages, and alcohol and drug abuse have become a national crisis.

We have been working to adjust our programs and services in ways thatrespond to these policy changes and long-term trends. We have:

1. Undertaken a capital campaign to add a program to treat youth with alcohol and drug addictions along with serious mental health problems. Though we anticipate a slow “ramp up,” the new cottages, which are scheduled to open after the first of the year, will ultimately be able to serve several dozen youth each year.

2. Revamped our emergency shelter to a 30-45 day program we call Assessment, Stabilization & Permanency (ASAP) serving youth for whomout-of-home placements have been unsuccessful and who’s treatment

team needs direction going forward. 3. Expanded our services for high-risk youth from the community who are leaving psychiatric hospitalizations but are not ready to go home. This START program is funded through “private pay” or commercial insurance.

From the Chief Executive Officer

asa Pacifica makes stories of resilience and hope possible. A young boy with a history of neglect finds safety, encouragement, and hope during his

stay in our Assessment, Stabilization & Permanency center. A teenage girl, a past victim of abuse, learns strategies to manage her anxiety and fears, enablingher to regain her appropriate education level and graduate high school on time. And, as you learned from our cover story, after years in and out of Casa Pacifica, a young man with little stability throughout his childhood is thriving as a successful, happy, contributing member of our community – loving his job crisscrossing thecountry as a semi-truck driver. Casa Pacifica makes great stories happen for thosewho’ve started out with incredible life difficulties.

Carrying out such an important mission is never easy. For Casa Pacifica, one mainchallenge is meeting a yearly budget shortfall. As part of the original public/privatepartnership when the agency formed, each year we must raise 10-12% of our budget in private donations. This year that equates to $3.1 million! These private funds support programs that earn little or no government contract funding – the health clinic; our Assessment,Stabilization & Permanency center; the residential treatment center; our nonpublic specialeducation school. These programs are not only Casa Pacifica’s four original core programs, but also those that serve the most emotionally challenged children and youth who require themost intensive services to help return them to functional, healthy, emotionally stable, sociallysound individuals.

So, what happens if we don’t succeed in reaching our goal? Fortunately, thathasn’t happened to-date, but it gets more difficult each year as our budget andservices continue to grow. If our annual fundraising goal is unmet, Casa Pacificawill be forced to cut back on its services – limiting the number of individualsaccessing programs, or provide abbreviated programs, or as a last resort, lay-offpersonnel. Lack of complete funding would affect the number of children andfamilies that could be assisted, leaving children and families facing the mostchallenging times of their lives with limited or no resources for help.

As a member, and the newly appointed President of Casa Pacifica’s Board ofDirectors, I and my fellow board members have taken on the responsibility ofensuring that the agency’s financial well-being is more-than-sufficient to meetour mission, program, and policy goals –all factors that work together to enable

life-changing growth for children and families. I thank you in advance for your efforts insupporting Casa Pacifica financially, as volunteers, and through sharing our story with others.Without you, we would be highly challenged to meet the task set before us. I look forward tothe year ahead and the exciting progress of expanding our programs to meet vital communityneeds. Thank you for joining us on this important mission.

These dramatic changes in policyalong with the ever-changing needsof the children, youth, and familieswe serve require us to be nimble andprepared to make adjustments alongthe way. But, they do not changeour core mission – to provide hopeand help where it is most needed inthe community – just as we havebeen doing since we opened in1994.

embers of the community have been very busy supporting Casa Pacifica and its children through a wide variety of activities. Here are a few highlights!

Lee & Associates Golf TournamentFORE . . . . the kids! That’s what the 19thannual Lee & Associates Golf Classic was allabout. Well, it’s also designed as a clientappreciation day, but this year’s tournamentheld in late-August benefitted Casa Pacifica, along with the San Fernando Valley RescueMission, and Make a Wish Tri-Counties.Golfers enjoyed a challenging day swinging, hitting, chipping, and putting their wayaround North Ranch Country Club inWestlake Village, along with a barbequelunch, chair massages, a cigar bar, a cocktailreception, awards presentation, and a raffleand silent auction. It was a great day of funand golf. Our thanks go to Michael Tingus,Shelly Garcia, and Nanette Yoshimi of Lee &Associates for their kind efforts in organizingand hosting such a terrific event, and forincluding Casa Pacifica as a beneficiary! Weare grateful for Lee & Associates ongoingsupport and partnership! Thank you!

Enterprise Fleet Management – Southern CaliforniaEmployees from Enterprise Fleet Management –Southern California’s four local offices partneredwith 99¢ Stores this past September to reoutfiteach of Casa Pacifica’s residential cottage’skitchens with new plates, bowls, drinkware, smallappliances (waffle irons, toasters, etc.), cookware(pots and pans), mixing bowls, cookie sheets, andmuch more. Having something new always makesa person feel good – whether it’s clothes, a newfriend, or the basics every kitchen needs to becomplete. Thank you to Lennon McGowan andAmanda Chowtham, who spearheaded theproject, and all the Enterprise employees forgiving our residents a boost of good vibes, alongwith all the great kitchen hardware. Thedonations are being put to very good daily use!

Girl Scouts Gold Award ProjectIn October, Kirsten Johnson of Girl ScoutTroop 02626 came to Casa Pacifica toperform a special project to earn her GoldAward. According to the Girl Scoutwebsite, “The Gold Award represents thehighest achievement in Girl Scouting, recognizing girls who demonstrateextraordinary leadership throughremarkable Take Action projects that havesustainable impact in their communities-and beyond.” Kirsten, along with thesupport of her mom Brenda, created“peace poles” by hand-painting ceramictiles with beautiful designs and inspiringwords, which were then baked to a hardfinish. The tiles were installed on several lightpoles outside the campus’ Intake Department, the first stop for children when they are placed at Casa Pacifica. The poles will offer a warm greeting to children who areconfused, scared, and under a lot of stress, as well as to all visitors to our campus. Thank you, Kirsten for choosing Casa Pacifica as the beneficiary of this wonderful project!

Berkshire HathawayGoing out and shopping forHalloween costumes for a couple ofhundred kids isn’t the easiest tasklogistically. Fortunately, Casa Pacificadoesn’t need to embark on such ahuge undertaking, because of theamazing generosity of ourcommunity. This year the LifestyleReal Estate Team with BerkshireHathaway Home Services CaliforniaProperties joined in on the holidayfun by holding a costume drive tosupport our kids Halloween costumedreams. We provided them a wishlist and they set about filling it.Thank you so much to all theBerkshire Hathaway employees who

participated in making sure Casa Pacifica’s kids celebrated Halloween in their ownsuperhero, ghoulish, princess, or pirate style!

NBeneficiary Designations Are Easy and Flexible

ot everyone wants to commit to making a gift in their will or estate. Some prefer the increased flexibility that a beneficiary designation provides by using:

• IRAs and retirement plans • Life insurance policies • Commercial annuitiesIt only takes three, simple steps to make this type of gift. Here's howto name Casa Pacifica as a beneficiary: 1. Contact your retirement plan administrator, insurance company, bank or financial institution for a change-of-beneficiary form. 2. Decide what percentage (1 to 100) you would like us to receive and name us, along with the percentage you chose, on the beneficiary form. 3. Return the completed form to your plan administrator, insurance company, bank or financial institution.

An Example of How It WorksRobert and Carol treasure the financial help they've been able togive their children and Casa Pacifica over the years. The couplerecently updated their will to leave stocks and real estate to theirkids. They left Casa Pacifica a $75,000 IRA to be transferredfollowing their lifetime. Because Casa Pacifica is tax-exempt, all $75,000 will help support our mission.

If Robert and Carol had left the IRA to their children, approximately $21,000* would have gone to pay federal incometaxes-leaving only $54,000 for their family's use. Robert andCarol are happy knowing they are making the most of theirhard-earned money thanks to their updated estate plan.

*Based on an assumption of a 28 percent marginal income tax bracket.

Next Steps1. Contact Carrie Hughes at (805) 366- 4011 or [email protected] for additional information on beneficiary designations and how they can help support Casa Pacifica with our mission.2. Talk to your financial or legal advisor to learn which assets will or will not trigger taxable income when paid to a beneficiary.3. If you name Casa Pacifica in your plans, please use our legal name and federal tax ID.

Children’s Events / Amigos Activities

reating happy childhood memories isn’t always the easiest thing to accomplish for foster children and youth removed from home. But here at Casa Pacifica we strive to achieve just that, with the help of our wonderful Angels and Amigos

auxiliary groups. We appreciate all the amazing volunteers who give so much of their time, effort, and love to organize some great activities for our children and youth. Here are just a few events our kids have enjoyed over the past few months.

End of Summer PartyThe End of Summer Party took place in August at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu where Casa Pacifica’s children and CASA volunteers and their kids were treated to a yummy BBQpicnic and a great day of fun that included swimming, paddle boats, fishing, a bouncehouse, an inflatable slide, and playing giant Jenga, among other activities, along withtraditional picnic games including sack races, water balloon toss, and a very competitivetug of war. “The magical and serene outdoor setting at Calamigos Ranch makes thisspecial event an unforgettable experience . . . Every child deserves positive childhoodexperiences which stay with them forever. We are overjoyed to provide such a memorable

day of fun to the foster children of Ventura County,”explains Linda Landau, who along with her husbandLewis, and Glennand Mon Li Gerson(owners ofCalamigos Ranch),make the daypossible. Ourheartfelt thanks tothe Landaus,Gersons, and thewonderful staff atCalamigos Ranchthe childrenexperienced anunforgettable daythat will be lookedback on as a veryhappy childhoodmemory.

Halloween HauntYo ho, Yo ho, a pirate’s life for me! This year’s children’sHalloween Haunt at Casa Pacifica took on the brazen fun ofscoundrels at sea. Many wonderful volunteer communitygroups came to help our Angels and Amigos teams build thefabulous haunted maze, the centerpiece of the Halloween Partyeach year, including volunteers from Bank of America, CBC

Federal Credit Union, LaReina High School, OaksChristian High School, BoysTeam Charity, Santa PaulaTheater, Shire – and somespecial help from Disney inbumping up the pirate themedecorations by loaning usPirates of the Caribbeanprops. Longtime Angel,Michelle Paschen and herhusband, Greg, donateddozens of pumpkins fordecorating, and the kids alsohad great fun rotating around tothe various game booths hostedby different departments at Casa Pacifica – such as the Development Department’s “Donuton a Line” challenge (try eating one with no hands as it swings from some string) – anddancing the night away to DJ AL. Thank you to the Angels, Amigos, and all the volunteerswho made this such a memorable night for our children and youth!

Amigos Wet ‘N Wild Water DayIn August the Amigos auxiliary hosted a Wet ‘N WildWater Day for Casa Pacifica’s children and youth thatincluded just about every form of fun you can have with

water outside aswimming pool.A huge inflatedwaterslide spedthe youth downits ramps. Waterballoons andwater gunsmade for greatbattles trying toget the otherteam doused. There were teamgames, like trying to pour a cup of water fromone team member to another sitting behind them,

while blindfolded. And good old-fashioned relay races were run. Yes, everyone was soakedby the end of the day – but that’s what makes it everyone’s favorite. Thank you to theAmigos and Boys Team Charity for putting on such a fantastic day of fun!

I t’s that time of year again! Casa Pacifica has begun its annual drive to provide gifts for all of the children, youth, and families we care for . . . and we are asking for YOUR help! The holidays can be a challenging time for the approximately 600 children Casa Pacifica serves each day – for some, because they are separated from family, friends, and home. With friends likeyou, though, assisting in whatever way you can – whether donating cash, merchandise, gift cards/gift certificates, or by sponsoring a specific child’s orfamily’s wish list – you can help us make their holidays a little brighter. Or,you can support the general needs of the residential cottages where ourchildren live.

Please visit our Holiday Wishes website to view our wish lists and see howyou can make a difference. Invite your family and friends to share in the spiritof giving as well by participating themselves, or, making a cash donationtoward wish list items in their name. Casa Pacifica and our children are deeplygrateful for your assistance!

www.cpkidswishes.org.(You will also find a link where you may make a donation

toward the purchase of wish list gifts.)

If you’d like to help a specific individual family, including families in our Venturaand Santa Barbara County community-based programs (TBS and Wraparound),or if you’d just like more information, please call 1-877-445-WISH (9474) or email [email protected]. Once you’ve done your shopping, bringunwrapped items from the lists to Casa Pacifica’s campus at 1722 S. LewisRoad, Camarillo, CA 93012.

C an you help our kids participate in the joy of giving? Each year Casa Pacifica holds a Holiday Gift Boutique where our children can “shop” for holiday gifts for their family members, teachers, social workers, and others who are important in their lives. The boutique is in need of new and almost-new

donations of gift items for women, men, boys, and girls, such as perfume, games, candles, lotions, stationery, wallets, picture frames, money clips, ties, colognes, etc.Once the children have picked out gifts for their loved-ones, volunteers beautifully wrapthem so the children have something special to present. It makes our kids feel good tobe able to shop for people they care about and to have a gift they’ve chosenthemselves in-hand when they visit their homes or with family for the holiday. Alongwith gift items, donations of gift bags, tissue, ribbons, boxes, tape, and wrapping

paper are also appreciated.Donated items can be brought toCasa Pacifica M-F, from 8 am-6pm. Please identify that the itemsare for the Holiday Boutiquewhen you drop them off.

If you would like to volunteeralong with the Angels to helpwrap gifts, or if you have anyquestions, please call AnnaCoulson in the DevelopmentDepartment at (805) 366-4023.

Casa Pacifica Alumnus Trucking His Way to Success!

Chad is now working as a truck driver for Swift Transportation andtraveling the country. “I think there’s only a few states I haven’t beento now,” Chad said trying to recount his travels. “I know I haven’tbeen to Maine yet, and I obviously haven’t driven to Hawaii andAlaska,” Chad joked. Chad and Jack still talk on the phone every dayand see each other every 4-6 weeks when Chad’s trucking schedulepermits. Jack is currently thinking about upgrading to unlimited data.

Casa Pacifica is so thankful for community partners like the CASAprogram who work with us to ensure no child falls through the cracks. We are also thankful for our generous donors who make it possible forus to provide basic necessities like clothing and hygiene needs, inaddition to more unusual or special needs that arise for our children. We are so fortunate to live in a community that deeply cares aboutour mission to provide hope and help to those children and familieswho need it most. The end of another year always bring reflection andthis year, as always, we realize we are very fortunate to have all of you– and so was Chad.
