DEZZA, AN UP-TO-DATE CLASSICThe Dezza armchair by Gio Ponti is a small work of domestic architecture, the result of the encounter with Franco Moschini, president of Poltrona Frau, in the home-studio Ponti designed on Via Dezza in Milan. More than a seat, it was conceived as “a construction system” to assemble, reprising certain typical design features, like the tapered triangular section of the legs. The year was 1965, and the idea was innovative. Though it went

out of production years later, Dezza has become part of the collective memory, a true icon. So Poltrona Frau has reissued the model today, in collaboration with Ponti’s heirs, updating the structure and the covering. The legs in white or black lacquered solid ash are joined by variations in solid Canaletto walnut and green or blue lacquered ash. The colors are based on the shades used in the Hotel Parco dei Principi in Sorrento and the Parco dei Principi in Rome, also designed by Ponti.

The armchair also changes its look thanks to the very high quality of Pelle Frau® Leather, the special leather available in 23 colors, for free combination with the structures. This aesthetic innovation is applied only to the models 24 and 48 (with a headrest built into the back). To illustrate this new project, we have decided to show Dezza in the rooms of the Rectorate of the Università degli Studi of Padua, at Palazzo Bo, designed and decorated with frescoes by the Milanese architect in the 1930s.

PELLE FRAU® LEATHERThe result of know-how and craftsmanship developed in 100 years of experience, for Poltrona Frau the working of leather is a true feather in the company’s cap. Pelle Frau® Leather is the material chosen to update the Dezza armchairs designed by Gio Ponti. After careful selection of full-grain skins (just 10 per 100), the Pelle Frau® Leather is tanned in multiple phases in oak casks, to absorb pigments in a natural way. This traditional, refined procedure creates a chiaroscuro effect known to tanners as “millepunte,” which adds depth and movement to the material. Pelle Frau® Leather comes in 23 shades. On these pages, we have highlighted certain details of the splendid fresco made in the 1930s by Ponti for the entrance staircase of the Rectorate of the Università degli Studi of Padua, triggering relationships and interactions with certain hues from the Pelle Frau® Leather range selected for Dezza. www.poltronafrau.com
