Welcome/ Bienvenidos/ Bem-vindos
Every day we make decisions. We decide when to wake up. We decide what to eat for breakfast. We decide how to get to work. We choose who to go for a drink with and what to do at the weekend. We choose whether or not to give a busker that coin in our pocket. We choose whether or not to call that friend we haven’t spoken to in a long time.
We make big decisions and we make small decisions. We make them rationally and irrationally. Sometimes, we need to think long and hard. Sometimes, we make them automatically. Sometimes it feels like we have a choice. Often, it feels like we don’t.
Running a festival like CASA means making hundreds and thousands of decisions. This year, there’s one big decision at the heart of our programming.
This year, we’ve chosen to give exciting young companies and artists the chance to shine. Call them young, new, emerging, whatever-you-want-to-call-them, we’ve chosen them because their work is great. We’ve chosen them because they offer a fascinating glimpse into the future of Latin American theatre.
If you think about it, it’s mind-boggling how many decisions must have taken place on our side and your side so that you’re reading these words. But before we get lost in an internal existential quest for meaning, consider this; we’ve made lots of decisions so you only really need to make one:
How many shows at CASA are you going to catch?
Daniel and the CASA team.

We fell in love with this young Chilean ensemble when we saw them in Santiago in early 2013. Caldo con Enjundia (literal translation “broth with substance”) are incredible musicians and physical comedy performers but, as their name suggests, there’s more to them than that. Both the shows they’re presenting at CASA are political fables about communities standing up for their rights and sticking it to the man. Relevant? Yes, absolutely.
Jorge CostaSometimes you’re watching a video of a show and within minutes, you know you’re watching something very special. Not only is Jorge a virtuoso mime and clown (don’t miss Visite Argentina), he’s one of the best improvisers we’ve ever seen. We have no idea how he does it, but he’ll create an hour-long show based on a cough. Yep. That’s right. He’s kind of amazing.
Who’s here
Caldo con Enjundia
La Maldita VanidadFounded only five years ago, La Maldita Vanidad have rocketed to the top of Colombian theatre with a delicious mix of black humour and hyperrealism. Watching their brilliant trilogy is a bit like watching an incredibly dark, funny and strange Latin American soap opera, with the added bonus of brilliant acting. Get your ticket to all three shows, you won’t regret it.
Tamsin ClarkeWinner of Nuestra CASA 2013 Scratch Night, Tamsin wowed everybody with her 15 minute excerpt of Manuelita. A year later, she’s finished the show and by the time you’re reading this, it’s probably become a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe. We’ve seen it and it’s everything we hoped it would be and more. Tamsin’s a delight to watch, multi-award winning Colombian musician Camilo Menjura provides a live score and as for the eponymous Manuelita, well, she rocks.
Tryo Teatro Banda
Cacho Gallegos
Tryo are back! After the success of Jemmy Button and Pedro de Valdivia at CASA 2012, it gives us great pleasure to welcome this wonderful troupe of storytelling musicians back to London with two brand new shows. If you saw them last time round, you’ll know how much fun they are. If you didn’t, then you’re in for a treat. Oh, and Parlamento! is a world premiere. Very exciting!
A discovery we made at the Translatines Festival in France last year, Carlos Gallegos, aka “Cacho”, is a wonderful mime and clown from Ecuador. Having trained in Quito with Malayerba (who performed at CASA last year) and in France at Ecole Jacques Lecoq, Cacho combines classical physical theatre with a Latin American leftfield sensibility to create shows that are a bit mad and lots of fun.

With perfect physical comedy and a stunning live soundtrack, Caldo narrate the true story of the mysterious disappearance of a local boxing star-to-be and fervent believer in social justice of the 1940’s, an event which galvanised a marginalised Chilean community against political persecution and media manipulation.

El autor intelectual / The InstigatorTwo brothers and their sister argue as to which one of them will have to move in with their ageing mother and look after her. Watch in through their living room window as tensions rise, secrets emerge and things turn nasty.
This autumn, we transform the iconic Rose Lipman Building in the heart of East London into modern-day Colombia. In this exclusive event, specially performed for CASA, see all three plays in a day, and at the end of the night join the cast for a delicious Colombian dinner.

Los autores materiales / The PerpetratorsSat in the kitchen of their student flat, Sebas, Julián and el Negro are trying to come to terms with the fact that they’ve killed their landlord. What they’ve forgotten is that the girl who cleans the flat is coming and has her own key. Inspired by Hitchcock’s Rope, this is nerve-shredding theatre at its most thrilling and fun.

Festival Encounters
CASA presents a series of three-hour encounters entitled “Questions of Representation” specially curated to foster dialogue, create links between disciplines and discover together more about the broader socio-economic, theoretical and political trends underlying the practice of making theatre in Latin America. Each encounter is an investigation into some of the themes explored in this year’s programme and takes its point of departure from one or more of this year’s shows.
