CHECK THIS OUT: Eyes on Main Street 5th Edition, now through Aug 4. Historic Downtown Wilson has been transformed into a vibrant gallery of large-scale photographs spanning over six city blocks. It “features 100 photographs by 100 prominent and emerging photographers from over 40 countries with an equal number of men and women participants. The exhibition, curated by Jerome De Perlinghi and co-curated by Ghadah Alrawi and Carol Johnson, focuses on the theme of "Main Street, a Crossroad of Cultures" as interpreted by the individual photographers. This year’s edition will include four additional exhibits, making Historic Downtown Wilson, NC a real crossroad for photography.” To see this year’s events visit: eyesonmainstreetwilson.com

North Carolina Museum of Art - Within the Frame Photography Exhibition. On display until July 21. An interesting collection of images that reveal scenes within mirrors, frames, windowpanes, and other constructions.

Duke Nasher Museum is exhibiting Where We Find Ourselves: The Photographs of Hugh Mangum, 1897 – 1922 until September 1. A self taught photographer, Mangum made portraits of a “clientele that was both racially and economically diverse.” The images made on “glass-plate negatives” laid buried and unprotected in a barn for 50 years before being saved. Here is an interesting article detailing some of the story.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES: Plants Delight Nursery & Juniper Level Botanic Garden is open to the public only a few days a year. Open Nursery and Garden Days: May 3-5. Friday and Saturday hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Open Sunday 1:00-5:00 pm. Photographers welcome.

MEMBER TIPS: — I have been watching some of Valerie Jardin’s webinars. They are well done and very helpful for those who like to do street photography. She also has a great book on street photography which I have read and found very helpful and easy to apply. Her website is www.valeriejardinphotography.com Her webinars are $20 and can be watched as many times as one likes. She also teaches workshops on street photography. You can also find some of her short videos on YouTube that are very instructional.

— Why Tasmania? Because I wanted to get my "holy grail" shot of the Milky Way in straight-up vertical alignment. The Bortle Scale measures light pollution from 1 (excellent dark sky) to 10 (inner city). To get a really good milky way picture you need to be in the 1-2 range. 1 is very rare in the U.S. and 2 is still very rare. However, Tasmania is a different story, so I used an app named PlanIt! to find a 1 spot 5 miles south of a tiny coastal town named Bicheno, Tasmania. There at 5:31 am on April 6, 2019 the "stars aligned" with the right conditions (no moon, minimal clouds) and I was able to capture the following shot to see just how many stars are out there on the

universe. It was a magnificent moment in my life, so I just had to share!

— Some CPA members who may be tired of digital and even conventional film photography, may want to pursue this trip in the photography time machine: News and Information from Camp Tintype https://johncoffer.com
