Polydoros (attributed)Laocoon and His SonsGreeceA long time ago

The oldest cultural artifacts are carvings of stone: axes, knives, etc. The main historical markers are also of carved stone: temples, sculptures, etc. We could carve stone, but the material is hard, difficult to move and expensive. The tools are here - air powered carvers and grinders. We could also, like my friend Dave Johnson, carve metal with torches and grinders. But, sticking with the themes of ready availability and low cost, we’ll focus on wood.

These pieces were made for ceremonies and were often disposed of after use. In the tropical climate from which these come, they seldom survive long in any case,

some tools

kevlar carving glove and kevlar chaps

kevlar is the material from which bullet-proof vests are made and offer excellent protection from sharp steel objects

we have the glovewhen lacking kevlar, use leather palm gloves

WEAR GLOVES !!!

WEAR EYE PROTECTION !!!

clamps

DO NOT do carving unless the wood is FIRMLY fixed to a stable work surface. use clamps or the vises we have outside

please TAKE CARE of the clamps. they are expensive and they save limbs and fingers

basic carving knives are better than a pocket (pen) knife for wood carving

the small blades can do delicate work

traditional carving chisels and gouges can remove and shape wood very nicely

to be tapped gently with wood mallets

use on wood ONLY. DO NOT use on plaster or stone

wood shaping ADZES are good for quickly shaping larger pieces of wood

they are also quite efficient at chopping legs

chainsaws. these have narrow carving tips. ours does not but does a great job nonetheless

dangerous and requires maintenance

the Arbortech power chisel does the same work as woodcarving gouges, but with a motor

we don’t have one of these, yet

we DO have both the Arbortech power carving kit (left) and the Arbortech mini-grinder

do I need to say that these are both potentially dangerous? please attend carefully to the demonstration

a flexible shaft machine is excellent for intricate power carving

we do not have one, but we DO have a Dremel tool for fine carving and finishing

carbide rotary carving heads, which fit into a rotary tool like the flexible shaft machine, is excellent for carving, and potentially really, really dangerous

we do not have them

Kutzall rotary carbide shaping discs and burrs (right) are insanely great tools. they attach to grinders or, in the case of the burrs, drills or rotary tools.

we have only a few so far

flap wheels for finishing. available at your local hardware store in various grits. attaches to power drills or rotary tools

we have a few

we have various sanding devices and discs as well as plain old sandpaper

enjoy!
