Carson Oil implemented industry-standard NVR’s at each site with inexpensive multi-Terabyte hard drives and utilized H.264 compression – one goal being the ability to store and retrieve archived video as much as 30 to 45 days old. When this project began, there was only one combination of software and hardware that offered the benefits of H.264 compression – exacqVision software and Arecont megapixel IP cameras. Carson Oil operates in three primary areas of petroleum distribution throughout Oregon:

• Transport (truck & trailer) fuel delivering

• Operating unattended, self-service commercial fueling

• Retail gas stations and convenience stores (Shell & Chevron).

Carson Oil currently operates 30 exacqVision NVR’s (Network Video Recorders), based on MS Windows XP operating

systems and approximately 100 IP cameras, and with more NVR’s and cameras scheduled to be installed over the next year.

The cameras view tank farms, loading racks, rail yard operations, unattended commercial cardlock sites and convenience

store & gas station interiors and exteriors. Carson Oil implemented industry-standard NVR’s at each site with inexpensive

multi-Terabyte hard drives and utilized H.264 compression – one goal being the ability to store and retrieve archived video

as much as 30 to 45 days old. When this project began, there was only one combination of software and hardware that

offered the benefits of H.264 compression – exacqVision software and Arecont megapixel IP cameras.

Each site has the following hardware and software:

• HP Compaq desktop wall-mounted computer running MS Windows XP & monitor

• Cisco/Linksys managed POE Switch

• Two to nine Arecont AV3105 H.264 POE IP megapixel cameras, with outdoor housings (most with heater/blower

option) or 1 Arecont 8365 360° camera, plus additional AV3105’s (interiors)

• exacqVision Client and Server software

• High-speed Internet (typically DSL or broadband cable)

All sites are monitored via internet connections in as many as three or four locations using exacqVision client software: 1.)

IT department at the corporate offices in Portland; 2.) Regional offices; 3.) Dispatch department in Portland (using a “wall of

monitors” – see below); 4.) and in the convenience store or gas station where the cameras are installed.

There were many goals and benefits for installing the exacqVision software & IP cameras at Carson Oil:

• Transaction verification at unattended commercial cardlocks in the case of a disputed transaction

• Typical theft and shrinkage issues (loss prevention) in the convenience stores and gas stations

• Theft and vandalism at cardlock sites, gas stations, and tank farms

• Customer security and safety monitoring at all cardlock, convenience stores, and gas stations

• Safety issue monitoring at all locations

“We were looking for an NVR solution that would give us the most days of high resolution recorded video we could fit in a relatively small Network Video Recording system, while retaining ease of use and flexibility, and found that exacqVision in conjunction with Arecont gave us the ‘biggest bang for the buck’ with their H.264 compression and Exacq Technologies flexible and affordable licensing structure.”
