THEY'RE BOTH A MATTER OF

BELIEVING, SON."

Dear People :

"Being an American is a lot like having religion, son. They're both a matter of believin' way deepdown in something bigger than yourself.• ."It doesn't matter who you are or where your folkscame from. If you accept Him, believe in Him andfollow His,teachings--and most important--act.onthem, you'll•grow up to be a God-fearing man. Beingan Americat• is like that, too.

"It doeh•t matter a hoot what country yourgreat-great-granddaddy lived in at th• time the Dec-laration of Independ.ence was signed, or whetheryou •o to church on Friday or Saturday or Sunday•Being .an American is .simpl• a case of believing inthe things that America stands for, believing in

son• in France or England or Greece•r-ttaty-o•r-=---,=Poland" or Russia or Gm'many. Itdoesr•t matter•hat

ancreed you are. You're an American, and the best of

Americas, and Jefferson and Lincoln all believed• the right to

be free yoursel• and to keep" this big and beautifuI

country free for every other American . . . bo•s likeyou and old men like me, fellows like Tony the shoe

revair man, Oley the carpenter, lake the tailor and

others. Always r•n•ember that, son. It's just the ques-

tion of what you believe in, and if you beliew in

-Ameri• that. it stands for• which means

c•eeddOm for the other f¢llow, too--- then you're a

it to the Stars and Stripes."That's your church, if you believe what it

teaches and act on those beliefs. And that's all Amer-ica asks of you• to beligve in things American--

and act like one."The above words made quite an impression ou

me and I thought I'd pass them on to you on the eveof the Fourth.

I've heard a lot o'f beefing.about how this coun-

t.ry is being rtrn, and•,how tough it is to make a liv-ing and so on. The• s been a lot of it lately. I'm a

come rtg argu-- meat becomes heated, but I always feel like saying,

"Maybe you don't like this country and the way

things are here. But, given the chance, would you

move to any other country in the world?"

Well, the Fourth is almbst upon us. It will be a

long holiday weekend. A lot of people.will be pack-

ing up and taking trips about the country. There

will be plenty of traffic o nthe roads and, unless un-

usual precautions are taken, too many accidents. So,

when you stai't out this weekend, take it easy. Good

Americans are not dead ones.

The dri•,e to raise funds for American Relief forPoland is still under way. Remember, when you areasked to contribute, that we can't all be fortunateenough to live in America.

Have a good holiday.

Sincerely,

MURRAY D, KAY ,
