description

This Intel Network Builders Webinar is on Carrier-class environments for NFV lifecycle management. Communications service providers see the strong business upside from deploying NFV-based services. NFV promises to lower costs, simplify network operations, and usher in a new era of rapid service innovation. However, there are still concerns about running mission-critical, revenue- generating network functions as software applications on general purpose compute platforms rather than purpose-built appliances. Intel, Wind River and Overture explore what is required to create a carrier grade, high-performance environment for hosting virtual network functions (VNFs). Learn how to: • Create a high-performance, high reliability NFV infrastructure • Identify essential attributes needed for carrier-class management and orchestration • Optimize the placement of VNFs and the benefits of distributed and centralized models • Support the complete service life cycle in a VNF-agnostic service environment

Carrier Grade Management and Orchestration

Attribute Data Center Carrier GradeResource Acquisition and Assignment

All resources are equivalent

Location, latency and bandwidth matter

Span of Control Within data center Datacenter + WAN + Customer Prem

Lifecycle and Work Flow Controlled directly by user

Tied into higher level OSS/BSS

Service Assurance and Resilience

Coarse status monitoring Transactional behavior and SLA monitoring

Elasticity and Scalability

Must be elastic and multi-tenant

Page 20: Carrier-Class Environments for NFV Lifecycle Management- Overture & Wind River Webinar

Carrier Grade Service Reliability

Typical requirements for telecom networks– Deterministic interrupt latency of 10µs or less, for virtualization in

most stringent CPE and access sections of network– At least 500km geographical redundancy for continued operation

in natural disaster scenarios– Detection of failed VMs in less than one second with automatic

restart and no silent failures– Automatic restart and recovery from host failures– Fully-redundant, auto-synchronized control plane– Accelerated live VM migration to ensure zero downtime in

planned maintenance

Solution must be developed using TL9000 methodology to guarantee six-nines reliability– Can’t do this with enterprise software designed for IT applications

Carrier Grade Reliability Protects Revenues

Need to minimize churn– Customers conditioned to expect “always-on” services– Telecom standard = 99.9999% uptime for services (six 9s)

Maximum 32 seconds per year average downtime– Enterprise software for IP applications: 99.9% uptime (three 9s)

Maximum 526 minutes per year average downtime

Cost of downtime is significant– Typical cost = $11,000 per minute, per server in SLA penalties– With IT-class infrastructure: almost Six Million dollars per year

per server
