CARRIE SEID Bending Light

March 19 – April 23, 2016

Lora Schlesinger Gallery presents Bending Light, featuring new work by Carrie Seid. Bending Light is a continued exploration of reflected light, color, and structure. Carrie Seid’s sculptures are built using aluminum bases, with geometric understructures. The forms within each base are constructed to allow light to bounce off the surfaces and the off the edges of the metal, organically. While she begins each piece with a formal aesthetic in mind, she lets the metal find it’s way according to its natural properties. The metal structures are then sheathed in silk to create enigmatic works that exist between painting and sculpture. The contrasting nature of the elements are harmoniously married, creating an intriguing atmosphere within each that changes with the time of day and the position of the viewer. Carrie Seid currently lives in Tucson, Arizona where she maintains a full-time studio practice and works as a creativity facilitator conducting seminars and doing public speaking. Seid received her B.F.A. from The Rhode Island School of Design and her M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has taught at numerous universities, including the School of The Art Institute of Chicago. Winner of the Purchase Award in 2003, her work is part of the permanent collection of The Tucson Museum of Art. Her public commissions in the Tucson area include the Udall Senior Center, the Northwest Medical Center, and the Flowing Wells Community Center. She is currently developing a public project for the Phoenix Commission on the Arts.
