Dear parents and members of our Carranballac College community,

Thank you to all who took the time to attend our Curriculum Information & Specialist Expo evening last week. We hope the evening provided valuable information about current and future programs for your child(ren).

As always we are keen to receive feedback to ensure that we are tailoring our programs/Information sessions and Forums to meet the needs of the community. Your feedback is important to us so please take the time to complete this short feedback survey and we will direct it to the most appropriate staff members.

I would also like to pass on my thanks to our staff and the many students who prepared and supported the session.

Please take the time to read the rest of this newsletter as it does contain key information and comprehensive accounts of recent and upcoming activities of the College.

I would like to turn your attention in this newsletter to a matter that should be high on home priority lists as it certainly is something we strive to achieve every day at the College : ‘resilience’ – one of our key College values. I do hope the following script helps support families in building their child’s (rens) resilience.

When you child hops in the car or arrives home in the afternoon after school or after care try this approach:

Consider not asking questions like: “How was school?” and, “What did you do today?”, teach them to reframe their day.

The following is a game I learned from a friend, who played it with his daughter over dinner or at afternoon snack at home.

Everyone must answer three questions:

1) What did someone do today to make you happy?

2) What did you do to make someone else happy?

3) What have you learned today?

I love this simple exercise as it helps us all to find the positive in every day. It teaches gratitude, nurtures optimism, and recognises kindness while building elements of resilience. It doesn’t matter what may have happened at work or school, or how stressed any of us may have felt when we sat down at the table; the whole mood seems to lift once we’ve played this game. I learn things about my kids that they’d probably never have thought to tell me otherwise. Try it. It might just become the highlight of your day.

Further to this there are some wonderful websites that only take a minute or two to read which can guide us into becoming better at building our child’s (rens) resilience.

Try Googling one of these:

• 12 loving ways to raise resilient kids

• 7 Ways to Raise a Resilient Child

And for a deeper look into building resilience in children:

• Building Resilience in Children – 20 Practical, Powerful Strategies.

Building resilience helps build independence which eventually leads to interdependence in young persons. In the final analysis of the ‘journey of life’ as parents and educators we should all be striving to build children who are resilient and interdependent.

The benefits of spending a little time; looking into these sites, will be far outweighed by the growth and joy you will experience from watching your child(ren) becoming more resilient.

Have a great fortnight.

A REFLECTION FROM COLLEGE DIRECTOR, BRENDAN O’BRIEN, ON THE EVENTS OF THE LAST FORTNIGHT AT CARRANBALLAC P-9 COLLEGE.

Page 3: CARRANBALLAC · progress as a college. It must be remembered that NAPLAN is just one snapshot of your child’s ability. The college has a comprehensive assessment schedule in which

Dear Parents

It’s been another jam packed fortnight as we head to the midway mark of Term 2, and some wild weather to finish off the week last week. So wild that we had to postpone a Zoo excursion.

We’d like to extend our thanks to the community for their support of our Curriculum Information and Specialist Expo evening. We value these community nights where our staff have the opportunity to share their expertise and give you, our families, an insight into the work that is happening every day in classrooms. We must also thank our Student Leaders for their food, and musicians who provided some great music throughout the evening. We continue to build on these community partnerships and always welcome feedback. We want to keep families as informed as we can and we are using Compass as the main vehicle of communication.

The middle of Term 2 is of course NAPLAN time. NAPLAN is one of the data tools used to track our academic progress as a college. It must be remembered that NAPLAN is just one snapshot of your child’s ability. The college has a comprehensive assessment schedule in which our staff are able to monitor your child’s progress and also to inform their teaching. This assessment happens daily and staff are always willing to discuss this with you. The students are to be congratulated for their positive attitude and efforts during the testing schedule.

We also thank staff for keeping this time of the term calm and relaxed.

Our sports program continues with training sessions occuring at lunchtime and after school. The students have been enthusiastic participants and we are excited to see how they compete against other schools in the district. We were able to work around some inclement weather for the Secondary Athletics Day a few weeks ago. This event was well attended and the students’ behaviour was excellent.

As you’ll be aware, the college will be used as a polling booth for this Saturday’s Federal Election and our wonderful Parents & Friends group will maintain the tradition of running a sausage sizzle. If you are able to spare an hour to work on the stall please contact your Campus Office. We continue to delight in the effort and commitment to learning that our students are displaying this term. Congratulations to our students for their continued hard work, our talented staff who deliver this success and our families who are with us on this important journey.

Each year Carranballac P-9 College hosts 14 and 15yr old students from Busan in South Korea for 2 ½ weeks, from 23 July – 10 Aug.

This year we have 18 students coming to the College.

We are still seeking families that would be able to share in this wonderful experience and host 2 students.

Families will be renumerated $280 per student per week. Any member of the family over 18 must hold a current Working With Children Check. The students attend school during the day and spend the rest of their stay with your family, with the exception of Saturdays when they will be taken sightseeing.

This opportunity is open to any family irrespective of the age of your children. In past years we have had wonderful feedback about how great the cross cultural experience was for the whole family.

If your family is interested in hosting Korean students we are still seeking families to support this program. Please contact Chriss Tracey 0400 548 618.

In week 2, students from Year 8 travelled to Ballarat to participate in an excursion at the Earth Ed, Earch Sciences Centre. Students explored the local area with metal detectors, identified minerals and tested core samples, looking for ‘gold’ deposits’. Song WritingOver two sessions at the beginning of the term, our Junior and Senior Rock Bands were involved in song writing workshops with Luke Yeoward. Luke has toured internationally with his former band, “King Cannons” and as a solo act. Many students were having their first experience at song writing and were surprised to find out that they are in fact capable of developing their ideas into a complete song! The songs written will be played at the annual “Rock Fest Battle of the Bands” competition, which we will host, in mid-June. I trust you’ll have an opportunity to hear the tunes over the course of the year.

Curriculum Information & Specialist ExpoThanks to the members of the Junior Rock band, who debuted their newly penned original songs in an acoustic format at our Expo. I’d also like to acknowledge the members of the Senior

Rock Band and the Year 9 Music Industry elective who were able to put on acoustic performances as well. If you came to the Expo, I trust you got to hear or have a play on our new marimbas! These tuned percussion instruments will become an important part of our primary music program.

High School Classroom MusicOur year 7 and 8s have been working on a song chosen by their class. They have selected the rock band instrument they’d like to focus on when learning the song and playing the tune as a whole class, before moving into small groups to continue their work. Students have also been learning to use our Roland HS5s, which allow them to monitor their ‘band’ through headphones. Ask your year 7 or 8 student about their song and instrument!

Due: Friday the 17TH May, 2019

Welcome to the Carranballac Corker. This is the weekly Family Learning Activity Page. Discuss the challenges and place your completed sheet in the box near the office. The correct winning entries will be drawn at the whole assembly on Friday afternoon.

Word of the Week: Write a definition for the following.

Geometry: __________________________________________________________________________________

Last Week’s word: Fraction: any part of a group, number or whole.

Family Fun Mini coloured kitchen volcanoes. You will have so much fun making these! For this experiment you will need to set up glasses of vinegar to be the base of your volcano or just take some paper cups. Sit your cups of vinegar in a large glass dish to catch the lava. Add a few drops of food colouring to each cup and stir and add some glitter if you like. Now for the easy part. Take a scoop of baking soda and drop it right into your cups of vinegar and watch the lava happen! You could do the first one so the kids can see the reaction and then they can go from there. After the vinegar was all out of the cups just rinse and start over.
