Overview

In our Technology and Future Skills Centre you will start your journey to becoming a qualified Carpenter. You will be learning a range of activities which start with Joinery Skills, Technical Drawing and the use of Hand Tools.

The second year will prepare you for work On Site and challenge you with activities such as Roofing, Floor Installation, Studwork and Kitchen Fitting.

You will also learn about the importance of Health and Safety, and what is required of you to be successful in the industry.

The course is designed to prepare you for a career in construction so you will need to show that you are Punctual, Professionally Minded, and adaptable to carry out other duties when required.

Levels and Entry Qualifications

Course: Construction Skills (Carpentry and Joinery)Qualification: Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills

Type of study: Full Time Level of study: Level 1

Grade Requirements: GCSEs between grades 3-2/D-E, plus a favourable report from schoolDuration: 1 year

Interview Required: Yes

Course: Site CarpentryQualification: Level 2 Technical Certificate in Site Carpentry

Type of study: Full Time Level of study: Level 2

Grade Requirements: GCSEs at grade 3/D or above, including Maths or Functional Skills in English and Maths at Level 1, or successful completion of Level 1 Diploma in Construction or equivalent

Duration: 1 year Interview Required: Yes

Course: Architectural Joinery Qualification: Level 2 Technical Certificate in Architectural Joinery

Type of study: Full Time Level of study: Level 2

Grade Requirements: GCSEs at grade 3/D or above, including Maths or Functional Skills in English and Maths at Level 1, or successful completion of Level 1 Diploma in Construction or equivalent

Assessments and Progression

The Level 1 course is assessed through a theory exam and completion of practical assessments.

Level 2 is a Synoptic type assessment which takes place at the end of the year, comprising of a Theory Exam and Practical Exam.

Future progression in Carpentry can lead to Level 2 & 3 Apprenticeships or direct employment in the trade.
