PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It’s another new year and I am happy to greet you as your new President of the Cincinnati Bridge Association. The others joining me as newly elected officers of the C.B.A. Board of Directors are: Jodie Kieffer, Vice President

Joy Norris, Executive Secretary Ralph Katz, Treasurer Jane Burpee, Recording Secretary The Board of Directors also welcomes the following new and returning members: Carolyn Ahlert, Herb Behr, Sis Gleisinger, Barbara Levinson, Joy Norris, and Nancy Sachs. Your other current Board members are: Elena Hickman, Fred Pollack, Walter Bunker, Mary Segal, and Bill Higgins. Please feel free to contact any of these people with your ideas for and offers to help with the activities of the CBA and the Cincinnati Bridge Center. All the members of our Unit contributed to making 2001 a good year for the CBA. Soon after the tragic events of September 11th, many of our members contributed to a Disaster Fund which was matched by the Convergys Corporation, resulting in a total of $2800 given to the Salvation Army. We also decided to change the beneficiary of our October 7th charity dinner and game to the Salvation Army’s 9/11 Disaster Fund. Thanks to the hard work and gifts of door prizes from many of our bridge players, we raised an additional $1370. In addition, the Bridge Center also participated in the ACBL’s “Red, White and Blue Bridge Bash” by joining clubs all across the country holding charity games on both Monday night, December 10th, and Saturday afternoon, December 15th. On the next page is a copy of the “Thank you” letter we received from the Salvation Army and later in this newsletter you will see the winners’ lists for these special games. Watch the ALERT for announcements of the many upcoming bridge events in 2002. We look forward to another great year for the CBA.

Best regards, Linda Wolber President

This STaC was again a big success. We had 180.5 tables in play throughout the event, with 19 tables even braving the snow for the Swiss Teams on Sunday. CBA players won a total of 531.8

masterpoints in the five days. Fred Pollack led the pack with almost 19 points. Cliff Pleatman led the Non-Life Master players.

I’ve had several players ask why we had the events we did during this STaC. The answer is that we were invited to join Columbus who was hosting this event. When another city hosts the STaC, they pick the events and the stratas that will be used. We have no input into any of this. The Sunday Swiss Teams are at the end of a long week and if we run a 2-session event, we have the problem of ordering food without knowing how many people we will need to serve. We felt that the event was too long to break in the middle for food and that we would lose some players because of the length, so we elected to run a single session Swiss. It is truly SO difficult to please all the people all the time! -- Jodie Kieffer, Tournament Chair

REMEMBERING JANE MULFORD Jane Mulford, a bridge player, director and teacher, died on November 27th, 2001. She is best remembered for her generosity and willingness to help inexperienced players become life masters. The “Greenhill Gals,” fondly remember her many parties and gifts she would present to each of them. Her legacy is kept alive today through her daughter, Kay, who directs the CBA’s two weekly Homestyle Games, well-known for attracting newer players to the Bridge Club with friendly games and great food. As a director, through the years Jane started many games: the Industrial Team Game (with Fred Baur), the old Post Mortem [P.M.] Game (with her husband, Harrison Mulford), the Greenhills Game, and games in Hamilton, at the Reading Road Frisch’s and at the old Tri-County Shillito’s. She introduced duplicate bridge to many of today’s most active players in the CBA. Jane was a favorite bridge partner, known for her even disposition – never getting upset with her partners or opponents. In her later years she was able to laugh at her infirmities of old age and wouldn’t let Parkinson’s Disease keep her from playing the game she loved. Jane will be missed by many bridge players in the Cincinnati area.

Bring Back Wednesday’s “NEW DEAL” Column For several years the “New Deal” bridge column, by our own Mike Oechsler, has appeared every Sunday and Wednesday in The Cincinnati Enquirer. In his column not only does Mike present interesting hands from local bridge games, but he also publicizes the names of CBA players who win special events and otherwise promotes CBA events, attracting new players. Recently the Enquirer has discontinued the Wednesday column, so the “New Deal” now appears only on Sundays. If enough of us write letters to the Enquirer, maybe we can convince the paper to bring back Mike’s Wednesday column.

DIRECTOR PLEASE !!! There has been a revoke

by

Otto Walter Duplicate laws 61, 62, 63 and 64 cover the situations of a revoke. Some definitions: • A revoke is the play of a card of another suit by a player who is able to either follow suit (or comply

with a lead penalty). • A revoke becomes established when the offender or his partner:

1. leads or plays to the following trick, 2. names or designates a card to be played to the following trick, or 3. makes or acquiesces in a claim or concession of tricks.

• There is no penalty for a revoke involving a card belonging to dummy. • A revoke at trick twelve never becomes established. It must be corrected. If a revoke is discovered prior to the offending side playing to the next trick, the play is corrected by the offender withdrawing the card he played in revoking and substituting a legal card for it. If the withdrawn card belongs to declarer or dummy, it is replaced into the correct hand without penalty. If the withdrawn card belongs to a defender, it becomes a major penalty card. If a revoke is corrected, subsequent cards played after the original revoke can be withdrawn by a member of the non-offending side without penalty. The card may also be withdrawn by the partner of a defending player who revoked if his RHO withdraws his card. This defender’s card becomes a major penalty card. The penalty for the revoke is either none, one or two tricks. There is no penalty when the offenders do not win any tricks from the revoke trick on. There is no penalty when the revoke involves a card belonging to dummy, or when it is the second revoke in the same suit by the same player. There is a one trick penalty when the offending side only won one trick beginning with the trick on which the revoke occurred. If the offending side wins two or more tricks beginning with the trick of the revoke, there is either a one or two trick penalty as follows:

If the offending player won the revoke trick, this is a two trick penalty. If the offending player wins a later trick in the suit in which the revoke occurred (i.e., fails to follow in the Spade suit and later wins a Spade trick), this is a two trick penalty. If neither of these conditions happened, this is a one trick penalty.

The revoke penalty is intended to protect the non-offending side. Even if the offender can prove his side was entitled to win all of their tricks, the revoke penalty is still enforced. This is very like a holding penalty in football. Touchdowns and long gains are called back even if the holding occurred on the other side of the field and had no impact on the completed play.

THINKING ON DEFENSE

BIDDING

* 4-card game-forcing raise.

** Minimum, balanced.

NORTH ♠ AJ1052

♥ KJ ♦ A43 ♣ 1052

WEST EAST (you) ♠ 983

♥2 led ♥ A973 ♦ Q72 ♣ Q83

Partner (west) leads the ♥2 against the 4♠ contract. When declarer (south) inserts the jack, you (east) win with the Ace. 4th best leads are used, so declarer is marked with 5 spades (dummy has 5 spades, you have 3, leaving 5 for declarer) and 3 hearts (partner has 4 hearts, you have 4, dummy has 2, leaving 3 for declarer). By the way, I hate the leads “low promises an honor”. The lead of the ♥2 does not promise the queen or the 10. The 2 is simply a count card. From 9432, lead the 2. From personal experience, I can tell you that 99% of the top American experts lead count in this fashion. Why not trust them? It’s also clear that partner does not hold both the AK of clubs because he would have led a club honor at trick 1. What do you lead at trick 2? Declarer is marked with 3 diamonds and 2 clubs or 2 diamonds and 3 clubs (since declarer is known to be balanced). Club lead at trick 2 1) Declarer has 2 diamonds and 3 clubs. Even if declarer’s diamonds are KJ, he can pitch only one club from his hand on a diamond winner. A club from dummy may also be discarded if declarer has the ♥Q. If we attack clubs ourselves, we will get at most 2 club tricks, so there is absolutely no reason to lead a club at trick 2 if declarer has 2 diamonds and 3 clubs. 2) Declarer has 3 diamonds and 2 clubs. A club from dummy may be discarded if declarer has the ♥Q. That discard is useless since declarer has 2 clubs also. Anyway you look at it, there is no reason

to lead a club at trick 2. The problem with a club lead is that it may give a trick. Declarer’s possible club holdings: ♣AJx. If declarer plays clubs himself, he will lose 2 tricks. When you lead a club, he simply ducks and loses one club only. ♣KJx If declarer plays himself, he will lose 2 tricks. When you lead a club, he simply ducks and loses one club only. ♣K9x If declarer plays clubs himself, he will lose 3 tricks. When you lead a club, he simply ducks and loses 2 clubs only. Diamond lead at trick 2 1) Declarer has 2 diamonds and 3 clubs If declarer does not have the diamond king, he will lose a diamond trick no matter what By leading a diamond at trick you may help him by giving him a free finesse into KJ that he might not have taken otherwise. There is absolutely no reason to lead a diamond at trick 2 if declarer has 2 diamonds and 3 clubs. 2) Declarer has 3 diamonds and 2 clubs If the declarer has the ♥Q, a diamond loser may be discarded on it. Still, leading a diamond at trick 2 can’t stop that. A diamond lead at trick 2 can’t help the defense but it can hurt. Let’s look at some diamond holdings where a diamond shift could be giving trick away. ♦K109 Declarer inserts the 9, and loses no tricks by finessing the queen later on. ♦KJ10 Declarer has no more guess on how to play the diamond suit. ♦J10x Declarer plays the 10 and then leads toward the jack to avoid a second loser. If declarer plays this suit himself, he will lose 2 tricks. After all this analysis, we conclude that we should not return a diamond or a club at trick 2 since it can only hurt, but never help the defense. Lead a safe spade or heart at trick 2.

MENTOR/MENTEE PROGRAM

Be on the ALERT for sign-ups for the popular Mentor/Mentee program which will begin in May. Sign-ups will begin in March at the Bridge Center. Anyone with fewer than 200 masterpoints may request a mentor. Last year we had 61 teams enrolled, 48 of which participated in the final Pot Luck Dinner and Bridge Party in September.

Mentors are particularly crucial to the success of this program. Anyone with more than 200 points may sign-up to be a mentor. The CBA encourages all life masters and higher to consider being a mentor. We need to encourage less experienced players to become more involved with the game and what better way than with YOUR help! Mentors agree to play with their mentees at least four times over the summer.

I will be looking for help with the committee. If you are willing to help, please let me know.

Any questions or suggestions? Please contact Nancy Sachs at 513-561-1766.
