In this new body of work Caroline Yates continues to explorenotions of identity and semiotics; the concept of beingrecognized or classed by appearance and in particular, dress.

She is interested in how the circumstances of birth can dictateone’s course or trajectory – life’s lottery or one’s lot –particularly pertinent with current debate about entitlementand social migration. Some of the work is playful, denotinginteractions between children ‘You think you know me’, ’Justwatch me’ and ‘The Librarian’.

Other paintings depict clusters of commuters; the eye is irre-sistibly drawn to dissimilarity in a crowd. Individuality assertsitself with flashes of colour, a recurring symbol being the manin a suit, or a bright figure, encircled by monochrome shapes..

Born in 1960, Caroline Yates is a graduate of The Royal Collegeof Art. Following the completion of her MA in 1995, she workedin textile design and as an illustrator. She studied fine artprintmaking at Camberwell before painting full time from 2000.
