RUGBY PROJECT LAUNCHED TO GROW PARTICIPATION IN NEW COMMUNITIES

Yorkshire Carnegie are one of 14 clubs taking part in Project Rugby, a new grassroots engagement initiative by England Rugby and Premiership Rugby designed to increase participation in under-represented communities.

Project Rugby will speci cally engage Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic people, people from low socio-economic backgrounds and disabled people, aged 14-24 with rugby union.

The project aims to reach over 12,000 participants by summer 2018 by providing accessible opportunities to play rugby, in over 200 community locations across England, transitioning new players and volunteers into local grassroots rugby clubs. The project’s innovative approach will utilise rugby’s core values to increase levels of resilience and con dence among participants, as well as helping people to feel more connected to their local community.

Funded by a major investment, Project Rugby will utilise the knowledge of both organisations in growing participation in new communities and increasing diversity in the game.

Chris Wolfe-Elder, Yorkshire Carnegie full-back, said: “We’re fully behind Project Rugby and its aim of bringing the game to new audiences in Yorkshire. Our club plays a prominent role in the local community so it’s important that people view the game, and Yorkshire Carnegie, as inclusive and open to anyone. We’re looking forward to changing perceptions of rugby union currently held by those who may not traditionally think the sport is for them. Our Project Rugby initiatives within the community will give new players the chance to enjoy the fantastic bene ts of rugby, hopefully creating fans for life and helping the game grow further in Yorkshire.”

Wayne Morris, Community & Corporate Social Responsibility Director at Premiership Rugby, commented: “We’re delighted to

announce the launch of Project Rugby, a landmark partnership between Premiership Rugby and England Rugby which combines the assets of the professional clubs and the governing body to help the game reach out to new communities.

“This ground-breaking new initiative, that builds on our previous programming, will see young people from disadvantaged communities, Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority groups and disabled people across England given the opportunity to participate in regular rugby activity. We will be putting rugby on the agenda for the rst time for many. Rugby is built on core values, Project Rugby will not only increase the number of people playing the game but will also harness these values, providing participants with essential life skills.

Steve Grainger, Rugby Development Director at England Rugby, added: “The Project Rugby partnership with Premiership Rugby is incredibly signi cant for rugby union in England as we aim to demonstrate that it can be a sport for everyone. Having all 14 Premiership Rugby partner clubs actively engaging with these communities gives us a fantastic reach across the country and we’re looking forward to seeing new people participating in the game. Rugby has a unique ability to increase self-con dence and wellbeing, as well as bringing people together, and we want as many people as possible to bene t from the sport.”

CLUB NEWS

In our rst game in the British & Irish Cup last week we were delighted to see a big involvement from players who have come through our Academy system.

Thirteen players in the 22-man squad had progressed through the Academy, which is an outstanding achievement for the club.

Following in the footsteps of Andy Forsyth, Max Green, Matt Smith, Richard Beck and Ollie Stedman, all established rst-team players and former Academy players, were Pontefract-born player Louis Brown, who has impressed on the wing this season in a run of games in the rst-team and is improving week-by-week.

Tom Bullough got the chance to play having featured for Otley on dual-registration this season, likewise y-half Harry Davey and winger Rian Hamilton, who have played at Hudders eld this season, featured in the team alongside back rower Lewis Wilson, who returned to the rst-team squad having played for Hull Ionians.

Harry Newborn earned a call-up after some good performances for Leeds Beckett so far this season and England Under-19 back rower Elliot Ward and England Under-18 international Oliver Fox, who has been playing with Hudders eld, both came on as replacements.

More of our Academy players have also been getting experience this season with their dual-registration teams. Sam Wolstenholme is with Hull Ionians and Tom Mann is playing for Wharfdale rst XV for the rst time this season.

Scott Barrow, Academy Player Performance Coach at Yorkshire Carnegie, said: “To see so many players in the Carnegie rst-team having come from our Academy is a great success story and it is a good opportunity for our young players to experience rst-team action in the British & Irish Cup.

“We would like to thank the clubs across Yorkshire we have been working with who have taken our players on loan and Leeds Beckett University for their continued support.”

UNDER-18s FIXTURESThe xtures for our Under-18s will begin in December with a home xture against Newcastle. This game will be played at Bishop Burton and our other home xtures will be played around Yorkshire at Barnsley RUFC and Keighley RUFC.

COMMUNITY NEWSYorkshire Carnegie’s community department were delighted to be joined by a liated preparatory schools recently at the annual JK Jones Yorkshire Carnegie Festival.

The festival was hosted by Woodhouse Grove, one of the club’s a liated senior schools, and saw the Under-10s from each school compete against each other over the course of the day.

Attending schools were Brontë House, Fulneck School, Moorlands, Richmond House and Westville House.

Keith Jones, a former Second Master at the school and after whom the festival is named, was supporting the event.

The schools were joined by two of Carnegie’s rst-team players, Michael Cusack and Richard Mayhew, who were on hand to present the schools with their participation prizes.

The children who took part in the festival will now be playing on the pitch during the half-time interval at the game against Bristol on Friday 17th November.

Lisa McCann, Head of Community for Yorkshire Carnegie, said: “It was a fantastic event with some excellent rugby on display.

“Woodhouse Grove were outstanding hosts and ensured everybody enjoyed the day so I would like to thank their sta for all of their hard work.”

Yorkshire Carnegie’s record try scorer Tom Biggs has been forced to retire from the professional game due to injury, bringing an end to his 13-year career at the top of the game.

Biggs made his debut for Leeds Tykes under Phil Davies back in 2004 after a pre-season injury crisis earned him a call up for the start of the season, and the former pea factory worker never looked back.

He made his debut against Gloucester in the Premiership and it soon became apparent that he would play a big part in the club’s future. By the end of the season he was an established rst-team player, earning a berth in the Powergen Cup Final-winning squad, where the team triumphed over Bath at Twickenham.

The following season, with regular rst-team action, Tom nished as the club’s top try scorer, but although it was a good personal campaign it proved to be a disappointing one for the team who dropped down to National Division One.

Despite the fall from the top- ight Tom pledged his commitment to the club in their ght to gain promotion and remained with the club during their National One campaign. That season though he su ered an injury that was to rule him out of the majority of the campaign, but he returned against Nottingham and was then an ever-present for the rest of the season, scoring the rst of his seven tries against Tyndale in the EDF Energy National Trophy. He registered two more of his tries in the memorable

40-12 win at Otley when Leeds clinched the title and their place back in the Premiership.

The following season was to be a signi cant one for Biggs, who after bringing his club try tally to 39, surpassed the record previously held by Dan Scarbrough as Leeds’ top try scorer. He then nished his season by rstly representing the England 7’s side, where he scored ve tries over the tournament, before going onto make a try-scoring debut for the Saxons against the USA in the Churchill Cup.

Tom spent one more season with Leeds Carnegie and once again helped the team nish as champions of National Division One, with 12 tries in 17 games. Over his Leeds career Biggs scored 51 tries in 108 appearances.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post, Beverley-born Biggs said: “It is disappointing having to nish like this but it is something I was told to prepare myself for. I’m a bit gutted as I’d put a lot of e ort into my latest rehab’ but this sort of thing comes with the job.

“I’ve had some great experiences, especially given I never thought about being a rugby player when I was younger, so to be able to go on and do it all has been fantastic. I’ve met some amazing people - not just those I’ve played with but in and around the game - and I’ve been lucky to do what I have.

“I was gutted never to get the chance to play for England. I did feel like I deserved it. I got really close but it didn’t quite happen.

Record try scorer Biggs calls time on career

“There were Chris Ashton, Ugo Monye, Dave Strettle and maybe still Mark Cueto around but I’d been there for such a long period I did feel it would happen. A couple of times I was in camps thinking I would get the chance and I remember a few times the coaches at Bath saying I might get in the autumn internationals or a Six Nations.”

Stuart Lancaster, who had nurtured him in his early career at Leeds, was England head coach at the time around Biggs’ involvement in 2012 and 2013. It is fascinating to think that Biggs nearly did not get started at all.

Famously, Tykes had let the untried 20-year-old join Harrogate at the start of the 2004-05 season only to swiftly cancel the deal after a major injury crisis. He was a student at Leeds Metropolitan University at the time, working in a pea factory and as a cinema usher to make ends meet.

“I think Iain Balshaw, Tim Stimpson and Diego Albanese were all injured and even lads further down the line in the academy, like Tom Rock and John Buchanan as well,” recalled Biggs. “They could easily have gone out and signed someone else but, thankfully, they asked me back. I’d

still been hanging around and doing a few sessions with the second team. When I arrived before that rst Premiership game and they saw I was just 67 kilos they must have all thought: ‘you must be joking!’ But Phil (Davies) and JC (Jon Callard) just told me to get out there and enjoy it. It went well and there was no turning back. Everyone there looked after me on and o the eld.”

After that debut against Gloucester, it soon became obvious the exciting winger had a bright future in the sport. Biggs featured in the Powergen Cup Final win over Bath at the end of that season and remembered: “I actually thought I’d just miss out on selection. But then Phil read out the team in the tea-room at Kirkstall. I rang my dad and told him I wasn’t on the bench.

“He said not to worry and to just make sure I went down to Twickenham and had a great day.But then I told him I wasn’t on the bench - as I was starting! We went on to win at Bath on the last day to avoid relegation as well and they really were great times.”

Biggs joined Newcastle Falcons in 2009-10 before Bath, his last switch to Worcester.

OPPOSITION PROFILE:

LONDON SCOTTISH

CHAMELEON TECHNOLOGY, OFFICIAL CLUB PARTNERTO YORKSHIRE CARNEGIE

Leading the revolution in smart home technology using insights from smart meter data.

Last week the Scots came out on top against the Dragons

Premiership Select side, winning 27-20 to secure a First Round win in the British & Irish Cup.

Since that opening-day victory over Carnegie, London Scottish’s form has been largely indi erent, stringing together some very good performances as well as some rather lacklustre ones.

The 72-12 drubbing at the hands of Ealing Trail nders was a particular lowlight. Silly errors by the Scots were compounded by a strong Trail nders side on a torrid afternoon at Vallis Way.

However, the Scots have played the top six

sides in this year’s Greene King IPA Championship and have come close to taking some big scalps. They narrowly lost out to Nottingham, a game they were in control of throughout but could not get over the line.

Furthermore, Scottish su ered a tough loss to consistent Championship high- yers Doncaster Knights where a late breakaway try took the game away from the Scots.

Before the two-week hiatus of the Greene King IPA Championship, allowing for the B&I Cup to kick-o , London Scottish headed to the South West to take on table-toppers Bristol Rugby at Ashton Gate. The Scots left Bristol with

a losing bonus point and a feeling that they were close to turning their season around and gaining some winning momentum. Something they will be eager to take into the crucial xture against Hartpury when the Championship returns next week.

Last week, Director of Rugby Dave Morris rotated his side, choosing to rest some players who were struggling with injury. Club Captain Chris Walker led the side and marshalled his team in a Man of the Match performance at The Athletic Ground.

Morris chose an exciting backline with many new arrivals making their rst appearances in the Tartan Blue. Durham

University graduate Rob Stevenson had a busy afternoon making multiple line breaks o his wing, and Charlie Ingall looked con dent at full-back after securing a move to Scottish from Aviva Premiership side Sale Sharks.

Morris will be hoping that his side bring the same enthusiasm and intensity that they

showed last week into today’s xture.

The British & Irish Cup is something very important to London Scottish. After the success Jersey Reds had in the competition last year and

the joy that brought to their supporters, the Scots will be looking to emulate such feats

in the currentcampaign.

London Scottish arrive at Ikley RFC this afternoon on the back of their rst win since their opening-day xture victory against today’s opponents Yorkshire Carnegie.
