PAY IT FORWARD CAMPAIGN – FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26 – FRIDAY,
NOVEMBER 2
Our Student Leadership class introduced Carnegie’s first Pay It Forward campaign,
taking place Friday, October 26 through Friday, November 2. The purpose of the
campaign is to have students contemplate and follow through with a random act of
kindness. It can be a small gesture or something grander… examples include
complimenting someone, smiling at a stranger, helping someone carry groceries to
their car, letting someone go in front of you in line, making breakfast for your family,
paying for the coffee or meal of the person behind you in the drive-through line, baking
cookies for a neighbor… the ideas are endless! You can go online and search for
“random acts of kindness” to get even more inspiration.
If Carnegie students wished to make it more interesting, they were invited to have a
member of our Media class record them on the first day of the campaign (Friday),
pledging their intentions. They are then asked to follow up with the Media class on
Monday to report how it went over the weekend.
Spread the kindness, and remember, as Aesop said, “No act of kindness, no matter
how small, is ever wasted.”

SPIRIT WEEK – MONDAY–FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29 - NOVEMBER 2
It’s Spirit Week! That means a chance to dress up according to each day’s theme and
show your spirit. Have fun and be creative, but remember to adhere to Carnegie’s dress
code, and costumes may not feature anything that obscures the face (masks, paint),
and may not feature any props (items that may be construed as dangerous/weapons).
Monday – 50s – Poodle skirts and greasers rule!
Tuesday – 60s – Peace, love, tie-dye and flower power, baby.
Wednesday – Halloween costume contest at lunch in the library, with the chance to win
prizes!
Thursday - 70s – It’s all about disco and bell bottoms.
Friday – 80s – Wear your totally rad neon, leg warmers and feathered hair!

Students are encouraged to express their creativity across a number of genres and see
how far their entry may go in the PTA Reflections Arts program. Categories include:

Some Carnegie teachers may incorporate the Literature category into a class
assignment, but students are welcome to enter as many times as they wish in any

to the district, state, and national levels. All Carnegie participants, regardless of
whether their entries advance, will be treated to a pizza party later in the year.

LAST DAY TO CLAIM ITEMS FROM LOST AND FOUND – THURSDAY,
NOVEMBER 1
Students and parents are encouraged to visit the Carnegie office and check out the
items that have accumulated in the overflowing lost and found drawers: apparel,
shoes, lunch bags, water bottles and more. Any items not claimed by the end of the
school day on Thursday, November 1 will be donated to charity.

SCHOOL DANCE – THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1
It’s time to dance the night away with your Carnegie BFFs! Join the fun on Thursday,
November 1 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the MP room. Students who dressed up for
Thursday’s 70s spirit week theme or who are still in the Halloween spirit may wear their
costumes to the dance if they wish, but this is not a themed dance and no costume is
required; regular street clothes that adhere to Carnegie’s dress code are acceptable.
Students must have 96 or more merits in order to attend this event. Admission tickets
may be purchased for $5 cash at the Leadership table in the student circle at lunch
periods on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, October 30, 31 and November 1. VIP
members don’t need to pay to receive their admission ticket, but must still pick one up
ahead of time, as the ticket serves as a permission slip and requires a parent signature.
Any students who don’t pick up their admission ticket prior to the event may pay $5
cash at the door, but must have a parent accompany them so the admission ticket may
be signed by the parent.

SKILL MASTERY MONTH - NOVEMBER
Carnegie’s Student Leadership class is challenging students to master a new skill during
the month of November. Have you always wanted to be able to juggle? Would you like
to be able to execute the perfect cartwheel? Maybe you’d like to master the perfect
French braid? The internet is chock full of tutorials for just about any skill under the sun.
Choose one and improve yourself!
Make it even more fun by downloading Flipgrid, an educational based app where
students record, upload, view, react and respond to each other’s short videos. The app
is intended to allow students to immerse themselves in each other’s learning processes
and perspectives. On November 1, post your first video, follow up periodically with your
progress if you like, then conclude on December 1 and broadcast your success!

in a casual setting. Discuss current student issues, district initiatives and any other
