Studying at Carnegie Mellon Heinz College Australia is not just about obtaining a master’s degree – it’s about becoming part of the Carnegie Mellon ethos of trying to improve the world. It is an ethos that has its roots in the founding of the University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA.

In 1900 philanthropist Andrew Carnegie established a technical school for the children of steel workers. Carnegie wanted a school where students could gain practical, applied knowledge that would improve their own lives and communities.

As the Carnegie Institute of Technology, the school became prominent as a technical

and fine arts school and in 1967 ‘Carnegie Tech’ merged with the Mellon Institute, a science research centre, to become Carnegie Mellon University.

Today, Carnegie Mellon University is made up of seven Colleges: the Carnegie Institute of Technology; the College of Fine Arts; College of Humanities and Social Sciences; the Tepper School of Business; the Mellon College of Science; the School of Computer Science; and the H. John Heinz III College.

The H. John Heinz III College at Carnegie Mellon is founded on the proposition that the study of public policy and of information technology, independently and jointly,

provides a uniquely powerful platform from which to influence the world of the 21st Century. We are the only academic institution in the world that pursues this goal through a unified faculty that comprises social science, management and information technology in roughly equal parts. It is our mission to utilize the research and education this platform enables to have a positive influence on the evolution of societies, economic systems, organizations and individual lives around the world. Formerly known as the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management, October 2008, witnessed the creation of

Although the intellectual base of the College is a unified faculty across these key intellectual traditions, the College’s professional education functions are carried out in these two distinct Schools.

The School of Public Policy and Management prepares graduates for leadership through intelligent action in pursuit of the public interest.

We believe our ability to mobilize analytic models, empirical analysis and technological sophistication to address these changes is unique. In pursuing our intellectual agenda we also aspire to be an academic institution that is a bridge between the development of new knowledge and its application for the transformation of organizations, societies and individual lives. The founding principles still guide the University today with a focus on the applied and practical. Programs at Carnegie Mellon are designed to advance knowledge, not by abstract theory but by purposeful problem solving in research and learning, based

“When the South Australian Government decided to form a locally-based partnership with an overseas university, we looked all over the world for the right institution. We wanted one that represented a good “fit” with South Australia, a university that had a progressive approach to education, that shared our State’s values and that excelled in the sort of fields that would be vital to our future prosperity. Against all these criteria, Carnegie Mellon was the stand-out choice.”

Show me the moneyStudents will have no trouble accessing money in Australia. There are automated teller machines (ATMs) in most Australian towns and all cities, as well as banks that will cash travellers cheques.

Most ATMs accept cards issued by other banks and are linked to international networks.

Credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted for everything, including getting cash advances over the counter at banks and from many ATMs. Charge cards such as Diners Club and American Express (Amex) are not as widely accepted.

Opening a local bank account is easy for students provided it’s done within six weeks of arrival. Simply present your passport and provide the bank with a postal address and they’ll open the account and send you an ATM card.

Changing foreign currency or travellers cheques is usually no problem at banks throughout Australia or at licensed money-changers such as Travelex or Amex in cities and major towns.

Christmas in Australia, in mid-summer, is less likely to involve a traditional European baked dinner, and more likely to be replaced by a ‘barbie’ (barbecue), full of seafood and quality steak. Various ethnic groups have their own celebrations.

Shop until you dropAustralians like to shop. Big cities can satisfy most consumer appetites with everything from high-fashion boutiques to second-hand emporiums, while many smaller places tend towards speciality retail shops. Many Australian cities have really interesting shopping (and eating) strips in different neighbourhoods, especially in the inner suburbs.

Leisure - kicking back and relaxingOne thing that can be said of most Australians is that they really know how to

Australians love their sport – both playing it and watching it. The number-one watched sport in the country is Australian Rules Football and the National Rugby League (NRL).

Australians are a nation of swimmers. Surfing is a hugely popular sport and pastime, as is evidenced by big events such as the Bells Beach Surf Classic, south of Melbourne. When you go to the suburban

beaches, always swim between the flags as some beaches have dangerous undertows (rips).

That’s Entertainment! It doesn’t take much to convince an Australian to celebrate or be entertained. When in Australia, do as the locals do.

Australia’s arts festivals attract people from all over the country to see drama, dance, music and visual arts. The Adelaide Arts Festival takes place at the beginning of March in even-numbered years.

second week of March each year. Melbourne has a Comedy Festival in April, the world’s biggest Writers’ Festival in September and the fabulous Melbourne International Festival in October.

Sporty fun includes Darwin’s Beer Can Regatta in August, when a series of boat races are held for “boats” constructed entirely of beer cans, while Alice Springs holds the Henley-on-Todd, a boat race on a dry river bed! More mainstream events include the Sydney to Hobart yacht race (from Boxing Day) and the Australian Grand Prix (Melbourne, March).

New Yorker magazine once called Adelaide “the last well planned metropolis on earth” - and with good reason. The city has wide streets and central squares ringed by 900 hectares of lush parklands.

Traffic is rarely congested and the people are relaxed and friendly. Compared to large metropolises, the air is clean and the public transport system will take you to the city’s white, pristine sandy beaches or the Adelaide Hills within half an hour.

Adelaide is becoming a University City. Its three main universities, the University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia (UniSA) and Flinders University have been

recently joined by prestigious U.S. and UK Universities - Carnegie Mellon, University College London and Cranfield University. It’s a place where ideas and culture merge.

Adelaide hosts more than 500 festivals annually. Three of the most popular are the Adelaide Festival of Arts, the Fringe Festival and WOMAdelaide. The city also offers a wide range of sports and recreational activities and a broad range of cultural opportunities, including museums, theatre, music, dance and visual arts.

The quality of life in Adelaide has been ranked among the top 30 cities in the

world. The cost of living in Adelaide is lower than any other Australian mainland capital. The Central Market in the heart of the city caters for every cuisine. Halal food is available.

A recent survey commissioned by Education Adelaide found South Australians are overwhelmingly supportive of international students. The survey said that South Australians believe international students add to the vibrancy of the city, as well as contributing to the community and the local economy. There are now a record number of more than 33,500 international students living and studying in South Australia.Adelaide has a Mediterranean climate.

The School of Urban and Public Affairs was established in 1968 to train men and women through master’s and doctoral programs to use new knowledge and technology to bring about positive change. It was renamed the Heinz School in 1992, in honour of Pennsylvania Senator H. John Heinz III.

William Cooper, one of the founders and the first dean, described the Heinz School as a place that “prepares men and women for intelligent action.”

which students work instead of undertaking a master’s thesis. Students participating in this semester-long group project are given an unstructured problem and work on refining the scope, then analysing, developing and implementing a solution. This enables students to address dynamic and complex business issues. It has led to real life innovations and start-up companies.

Graduates of the MSPPM program are in great demand and work in a wide range of roles and industries. These roles cover areas from public policy and financial analysis to economic development and strategic project management. Graduates from the MSPPM program in the US and the Australia campus have taken jobs

in organisations in the public sector and NGOs such aa Coffey International, the United Nations and the World Bank; and many companies and consultancies in the private sector, including Goldman Sachs, IBM and PricewaterhouseCoopers. As these career paths show, the MSPPM should be considered by anyone contemplating an MBA.

The MSPPM program can be taken full-time or part-time as follows:

I moved from India to Australia in 1994 when I was 12 years old. I had a really bad habit then of starting things and never finishing them. My experience at CMU has not just been about myprofessional development but also about personal development. I have made some great friends and I’ll certainly miss all the lecturers, colleagues, and staff at CMU. I had the privilege of studying with four batches and made friends from all overthe world. I enjoyed the class discussions in every subject due to different perspectives of fellow students. Now my dad thinks that moving to Australia was well worth the effort. Oh, I have also made a decent contribution to the CMU vending machines.

I am glad of all my experiences here! I have been a part-timer at CMU for 3.5 years and its been great to see all the full-time students come and go. Now it’s my time to move on and return to my family, friends, and my previous life. It is bittersweet because even though I yearned to finish, I still want to continue hanging out at CMU! It’s a great environment - supportive, enthusiastic, high-energy, always changing, always improving, but still staying the same in all the important essentials. My successes have inspired me and my failures have taught me more than any book could. Thank you to my family and friends for all your patience and support. Thank you classmates! Thank you faculty! Thank you CMU managers and staff!

If someone had said to me four years ago I would do a post graduate degree at CMU, I would have thought they weremad. Now I have finished, I still agree – they are mad. But so am I! CMU has been a great experience. I’ve made great friendsand developed wonderful contacts. I am moving in a different direction in my work and feel much more confident in areas I thought were beyond me several years ago. Life after CMU? You bet! I want to provide volunteer opportunities to incoming students through my CMU association and help others make a difference in applying their skills to practical community issues. I have along time commitment to fostering volunteerism and will continue with this passion.

The past three years have been an interesting journey and a challenge to juggle family, work, and social and study commitments. Along the way I’ve been fortunate to have studied with intelligent people and to have made many good friends. I’ve had a go at most things, including teaching assistant, entertainment coordinator, entrepreneur, tour guide, and guest lecturer. Thank you to lecturers who helped me expand my technical and analytical skills, but it is the life skills you have passed on that I will treasure most. I have learnt to run fast, to be disciplined, to be ready for the moment of truth, to tell a good story, and to realise that while we may strive for academic excellence, it is our compassion for others that is the true measure of our abilities.

Studying at CMU has been a rewarding experience. I’ve been lucky to experience life both as a part-time and full-time student, enjoying the challenges of managing the aggressive workload ofa full-time student and the different challenges associated with studying and work full-time. Beyond that, I was lucky to travel through three years and get to know different students overthose years. The bond established in a course of study as rigorous as CMU’s is phenomenal. CMU is not just a fantasticacademic arena, it is also a supportive environment. I went through several personal changes including giving birth to my son. The students and the staff at CMU were tremendously supportive through all of these.

Life at Carnegie Mellon is a tapestry of colorful times, a mosaic of varied events, and strong brush strokes of glitzy paints on a huge canvas. Or should I borrow Charles Dickens’s immortal lines: The best of times and the worst of times? Indeed Carnegie Mellonis a journey of contrasts in more ways than one: ecstasy and agony, rise and fall, dreams coming true or falling apart.Memories with their music and lyrics are singing in my ears while preparing this piece. Carnegie Mellon was the longest and the most exciting learning experience of my life. The faculty were extraordinary talented and had excellent teaching skills. It was wonderful to be taught by the smartest brains and greatest minds. At the end of the year I managed to graduate with distinction and came back to my home country Bangladesh. I was equipped with solid technical and business knowledge and I was prepared to move to the next level of my career. I joined a small HR consultancy firm as IT project coordinator where I would be able to apply the newly earned knowledge and demonstrate my leadership skills. Within one year I was promoted twice and now serve the company as the Chief Technical Officer.I am indeed very proud to be a part of the Carnegie Mellon Family.

Now I can say what I can do for organisations and what innovations I can bring.I enjoyed my study here in CMU and Adelaide as a whole - great place to go around, nice people. I chose to enroll because it encompasses what I wanted to grasp firmly in order to give a new turn to my professional career: management science, policy analysis, and information technology. I had another offer to study in a US-based graduate school but what if I could get a world-class US education in an exotic country such as Australia?

Fortunately, I was awarded a full tuition scholarship from South Australian Government and a stipend from Heinz College to participate in the program.

After graduation, I worked respectively as a Consultant, a Teaching Assistant, and now as a National Advisor in Education with SNV- Netherlands Development Organization’s office in Burkina Faso where I am contributing to the capacity building of municipalities and civil society organizations in the management of the primary education system.

2009 is definitely one of the highlights of my academic life. I’ve never worked so hard, read so many books, and learnt so many things in a such a short period. The learning process and theknowledge gained in CMU will impact profoundly on whatever endeavour I shall later pursue. I thank CMU and the Australian government for giving me the scholarship. Life in Australia was wonderful, academically and personally. I’ve made many new friends and was also able to do things I haven’t done before – picking fresh strawberries, holding a koala, and traveling the Great Ocean Road. 13th August 2008, I began a journey which transformed me into a focused and high achieving person with clear set goals and objectives. CMU transformed me into an all-around individual with the required leadership, managerial, and technical skills. I amhappy that I spent a year of my life at CMU. It gave me an understanding of what I am, what I can achieve, and a longlist of friends who will be with me for a lifetime. I will never forget the cooking lessons, the TA ship’s, the debates, international nights, beach parties and pub crawls with undoubtedly the best and the smartest people on this planet. The most interesting part of my study in CMU was the opportunity to interact with students from 20 different countries. I felt part of “One World”. CMU life is hard because of assignments, exams, and group work but these activities made life interesting. Now Iwant more assignments! I have always been known as a “nerd”during my undergraduate days. CMU changed everything for me: It taught me the importance of interacting with professionals from different fields, try different things, understand different individuals, and explore my capabilities. CMU experience is not just aboutstudies. It is about understanding yourself and the world from a new angle.

It was challenging to go through the rigorous program and I found myself struggling most of the time doing assignments and studying for exams, but it helped me transform myself into something greater than before. CMU is not only a place to learn new knowledge and skills but also a place to change a way of thinking, outlook, and attitude. I have learnt from wonderful professors, shared pain and joy with brilliant fellow students, and I have learnt the extent hardship can test my standard for excellence. Eleven monthswith more than 60 fabulous students from around 20 different countries was something I’ve never imagined before. I wanted to do something different after my first degree in Economics and Statistics but I did not want to avert much from my quantitative background. So, Carnegie Mellon was the best choice with its quantitative approach in Public Policy coupled with its reputation and rankings internationally. My time at CMU has made me view things differently, I am a bit more sceptical about things now than I was before, I do not take things as they are, rather I try to see the other side of the story. I also have a different approach to my colleagues, before I used to be impatient but after interacting with people from different backgrounds at CMU I grew on that part.

I have been stretched, brought to a point of exhaustion, and felt satisfaction at the process of developing CMU student skills. Apart from studies, skydiving from 8000 feet, on a jet-ski at 50mph, driving along the snaky Great Ocean Road, and snorkeling in Great Barrier Reef made it to the list of “great” experiences I had during my stay. “Calendars are for careful people, not passionate ones.” I, like other CMU friends, crammed too much in one year. Firstly, my ambitious selection of courses put workload to an extent I lost track of day-night, meals, and sleep. Secondly, my class mates “trusted” me with the responsibilities of being Student Representative and SIFE president. Thirdly, my friends “decided” that I needed some fun, so they took me to Melbourne, Tasmania, Sydney, Darwin, Alice Springs, and Uluru. Finally, my family “made” me establish our own house in Adelaide. I never knew I could “accomplish” so much in one year. It is thanks to Allah, to my family, and friends that I did it.

I am a Systems Engineer who migrated to Australia in July 2006 looking for better opportunities and new challenges. I originally come from Chiclayo, Peru.I’ve always been working in software development in different companies, positions and technical environments. My main interests have been Software Architecture and those related to increasing productivity. In Australia I got a position in EDS as Information Analyst and a few months later in May 2007 started the part-time MSIT at CMU. During this time I have met extraordinary people among student, lecturers and staff and have learnt a lot from both attending the courses and the cultural diversity.

When someone told me pre-CMU that going to school on Sundays was common, I didn’t believe her. I should have. I can count the number of days I failed to visit dear old Torrens Building. Thankfully, the hard work has paid off. I now know that making decisions under uncertainty entail more than just the flip of a coin, that quantifying costs and benefits can be useful in deciding whether or not to proceed, and that Excel and Powerpoint are not just icons that clutter my desktop. Throughout the rushing of assignments, study groups, and mugs of Nescafe 3-in-1, I have made friends with the best and the brightest in the world. I hope to continue to be part of their individual journeys, in whatever medium.

The MSPPM program is not a walk in the park. It is an uphill climb battling with DWLs, economic (un)naturalists, heteroskedasticity, crystal balls, TMVs, balance sheets, and vacuity. Yet, it IS a park. I’ve had professors who made the roller-coaster rides fun mind-travels to places I previously dared not venture. I’ve had good friends who helped me keep my humour amidst all the nasty equations. By the last term, I’ve transformed into a juggler of sorts – attending classes and project meetings, collaborating on the yearbook project, working as teaching assistant, and squeezing in weekend trips and activities.

What is one year to a Carnegie Mellon student? Let me quantify this from my personal experience:70% - increase in the optical grade of my eyes.40% = increase in my stomach acidity.3 kilos = average weight I lost this year.3 hours = average sleep time I got per night.7:10 = ratio of white hair strands to black after CMU.On the brighter side: my social network grew by more than fifty people, I added 30 more good books read, and my winelist expanded to more than 10 varieties.

An offer from CMU is not an opportunity to forego. Rather than seeing ‘public policy as a process of muddling through’, I learntthe science behind its quantification, although I still uphold the belief that its application is an art in itself. Life as a student is not without its challenges. Resettling the family in a new environment was not easy. Nonetheless, with family bonding as priority, it wasan exhilarating year, with us being able to do several activities. Other than family, the other greatest achievement is the bond built with coursemates from diverse cultures. I trust that the friendship and shared experiences that we have will remain in our minds, not to mention the network that will serve to open doors for one another.

My CMU life was a life of new dreams, new experiences and new friends which I will cherish forever. I will always remember the year 2008 as the most hectic but prolific. The nights before exams, the days with the assignments, my madness with projects are all parts of my Adelaide life. The appropriate shout-out would be “sleep if you have time”.

2009 is the year I will never forget. I traveled from the Pearl of the Indian Ocean to the land Down Under. I have lived in the City of Red Kangaroo and immersed myself among among the Cream of World Talent.I have seen how the sun kissed the Uluru and drowned in the sea. My heart was in the work while Hungry Jack, NaanTandoori, Dominos, and Coles looked after my body. Finally, I earned the hat. Now the world looks different but still feels familiar. I missed my family for a year but I will miss the mammoth load of assignments for the rest of my life!

I dreamed of a year with self-exploration, multi-cultural immersion, intellectual stimuli, and a chance to get to know Australian culture upon starting in CMU. I forgot that a Carnegie Mellon graduate program also would be a lot of work.I experienced more during my year of study that I thought I would. I have learnt amazing things about life (and myself) that I did not expect to learn.I will now take with me many memories of challenges and successes, pains and glories. More than anything, I will remember my classmates who helped me get through it all. I hope we see each other again soon.

I’m from Vietnam. I got my Bachelors of Engineering degree at the University of Technology Sydney where I met my husband Son Nguyen. After four wonderful years in Sydney, we experienced a new journey in Singapore where I worked as a Software Developer. We both received CMU scholarships and came back to Oz in 2008to pursue the MSIT course. I’m very lucky to always have my dear husband beside me. We have so much in common such as a love for travelling, food etc... Our dream is to travel to many countries in the next 5 years especially to Europe and the US.

My time at CMU was an endless series of assignments, papers, projects, research and exams. Fortunately, I was able to share the “pains” with my Australian and international friends. I am happy and proud that I was able to study the MSPPM program that has equipped me with advanced knowledge and skills for my future career.

What an incredible opportunity to learn with an exceptional group of fellow students and to be taught by some of the best minds in the world. Indeed, “Success is a journey, not a destination”.A year at CMU has been a most challenging and rewarding journey. The road was paved with sacrifice (having left my family, sleepless nights, etc.), frustration, and at times despair. I learntthat as long as there are exams, there will be prayers in schools. But it was a race worth running. CMU is a valuable link in my career and a stepping stone to my future destiny. Things that are hard to bear are sweet to remember. I will always treasure thefriends, knowledge, and skills I have acquired in CMU.
