WOMEN TEE OFF FOR WORK & PLAY
Writer & Photographer / Stephanie Carlson Curtis
Traditionally a sport dominated by men, golf is increasingly appealing to women. Ladies are getting into the swing of golf at clubs that invite gals to tee it up through programs for both experienced and novice golfers. Women get into the game for multiple reasons, from business to personal, and for those who want to learn or develop their skills, there is plenty of room on the driving range.

Five years ago, Kelly Martin, an employee with Becknell Industrial Properties, picked up a club for the first time. “On a nice day, it’s great to grab a friend and play nine holes,” Martin said. “But, start out with low expectations, and take instructions from a professional to help you learn.”
Martin often plays with her colleagues at IndyCREW, an organization for women involved in commercial real estate. Whitney Phillman and Lauren Kriner agree that golf has been good for business.
“I like playing scrambles,” said Kriner, director of business development at Capitol Construction. “As intimidating as it can be to golf with men, it’s nice to know they don’t have to rely on my ball, but that I can contribute with a good shot here and there.” Kriner also enjoys spending time on the golf course with her husband.
“My mom and dad golf so they started me at a young age,” Phillman said. “Not only is golf good for building work relationships, but it is a life sport.” Phillman, senior sales consultant with KONE Elevators, is organizing a golf outing for IndyCREW members.
Golf programs designed for women can be found at most clubs. Specific mornings are designated for ladies only and often include instruction followed by nine or 18 holes of golf.
John “Doc” O’Neal, general manager and COO of Prairie View Golf Club, as well as principal at Cohoat and O’Neal, realizes it is not easy for women to get on the golf course and that the game can be overwhelming. “Many women have never been exposed to golf,” he said.
“We want to introduce them to the game in elementary ways so they can learn and feel comfortable.”
Beginners, intermediate and advanced players can get ready for golf season by participating in clinics and then continue to polish their skills in woman-friendly leagues at Prairie View, Plum Creek and Brookshire golf clubs. Special events, such as Bosom Buddies at Plum Creek (a guest day combined with a charitable cause, Rally for the Cure) are a fun way to golf and give back. For more competitive women, the Indy Women’s Golf League organizes a 16-week program for professional working women to hit courses in and around Carmel.

“ ere are a lot of applications for women on the golf course,” O’Neal said. “It’s good therapy, exercise and a way to get to know people and build relationships.” Women are always welcome, he said. “We all feel awkward at times, and we all make mistakes. Take lessons, be patient and work your way into it. When you have that good shot, it makes you want to play more.”

CHRIS DENARI BRINGING PASSION & PREPARATION TO THE PACERS

Writer / Ray Compton
During a stretch in their NBA history, the Indiana Pacers aggressively pursued and mostly selected national voices to ll their play-by-play position in the television booths in Market Square Arena and Conseco (now Bankers Life) Fieldhouse.
ere were the grinning best-friend faces from Cincinnati/North Carolina (Marty Brennaman), Denver/New York (Al Albert) and San Diego/Milwaukee (Eddie Douce e). All provided well-polished skills, but their runs were relatively short in Indiana. For whatever reason, none kept a Hoosier ZIP code for too long.
But that national pipeline dried up in 2006, when the Pacers discovered their talent need in their own backyard. It was then that Carmel resident Chris Denari expanded his announcing résumé and was hired by Pacers Sports and Entertainment to do their play-by-play work on Fox Sports
Midwest. Neither the Pacers nor Denari have ever looked back, second-guessing the selection of a Hoosier.
Nor is either party peeking ahead to dissolve the relationship.
“For me, I have reached the pinnacle of my career,” Denari said. “I love doing all of this while living in my hometown. I hope to do this until I retire.”
And retirement would seem many game nights afar. Denari is only 52 and appears to be young enough to still be a ending Wabash College, where he played on the 1983 Li le Giants’ NCAA Division III national championship team. His enthusiasm for this chapter in his career is unwrinkled by the workload of broadcasting more than 120 events a year.
“I absolutely love what I am doing,” he noted. “When you are in an arena with a game in front of you, that’s not a job.”
It also doesn’t hurt that your boss lauds your work.
“He was my rst call [to ll the position],” recalled Jamie Burns, vice president of broadcasting for the club. “I knew he would resonate in Indiana.” And with the one-two punch of Mark Boyle on radio and Denari on television, Burns believes “we have two of the best play-by-play announcers in the business.”
Denari’s a nity for career and life bubbled during his high school days at West eld, where he played basketball for his father, Bob. ( e elder Denari, an Indianapolis Howe graduate, celebrated the 50th anniversary of his Piqua Catholic School team winning the Class A championship in Ohio in March.)
“We moved a number of times because of his teaching and coaching jobs,” remembered Chris Denari. “But I always looked at that as a positive.”
Chris with commentator Quinn Buckner

Those moves from town to town and home to home may have played a role in Denari’s pursuits for his own career. Seemingly, he has never said no to a moving truck. After Wabash, his first announcing job was at the Columbus, Ind., radio station WWWY in 1983. He joined the original Channel 59 —
WPDS-TV — for 18 months and soon did play-by-play at Central Indiana (now the University of Indianapolis). That three-year stint was followed by a one-year stop at the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (aka Horizon League) and a 10-year tour as the marketing and associate director at Butler.
Denari doubled as the radio play-by-play man for the Bulldogs for 17 years and witnessed the rise of the Butler nation.
“The success of Butler helped my career,” he assessed.
Later, Denari served as the director of communications for Methodist Sports Medicine for five years and returned to be sports director at Fox 59 WXIN-TV from 2004 to 2006. It was at that juncture that the workaholic snared part-time opportunities with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indianapolis Colts.
Then came the call that led to the NBA. Denari had pried the door open with Pacers Sports and Entertainment by interviewing for a managerial position with the Fever when the franchise formed in 2000. Denari didn’t get the front office position but was hired as the radio play-by-play announcer.
Today Denari retains the Fever work but added the Pacers telecast in 2006. He has been a witness to the surge on Pennsylvania Street.
“During my first four years with the team, the Pacers didn’t make the playoffs and the fans were disinterested,” said Denari. “We had 28 sellouts this year, and the city is buzzing. I absolutely love the turnaround. So many people in the front office have worked so hard, and it is great to see that reflected on the product on the floor and in the stands.”
But it is doubtful anyone at Bankers Life Fieldhouse works harder than Denari on game days. His preparation runs eight to 10 hours, frequently starting by 8 a.m. A typical game day schedule includes conference calls with producers, production meetings with directors and day-of-game team practices.

Road trips can easily stretch beyond 18 hours when he arrives at his Brookshire home. But there is no complaining. “A lot of people are well qualified to do what I do and would love to be the Pacers play-by-play man,” Denari noted.
Burns believes the self-imposed dedication and preparation play a starring role in his announcer’s success.
“It is extremely important that a play-by-play person does his homework and is well prepared,” Burns said. “And Chris is outstanding in both of those areas. Secondly, the announcer has to have passion for the game. Chris loves the game. Finally, it helps that Chris was the son of a basketball coach and that he also played. He has great knowledge of the game and is like a second analyst.”
Just as radio cohort Boyle, Denari’s announcing style centers in the middle, leaving sidekick Quinn Buckner room to question whistles by officials or lavishing praise on the home team.
“I absolutely want the Pacers to win,” he said. “But I try to be very objective in how I handle the game. I am not a homer. I don’t use words such as “we” or “us.” That’s just not my style. The audience has to trust you.”
Now, Denari is aware of another challenge confronting the Pacers — the playoffs. Slippage here could damage the regular-season success story.
“The team needs to get its mojo back,” assessed Denari. “They have had a slide once the calendar turned to 2014. You are very pleased on what this team has accomplished, but you also know that teams are measured by what they do in the postseason.”
Denari will be well prepared for whatever happens in April, May and, maybe, June.
CHRIS DENARI: 10 FACTOIDS1. WHAT WAS YOUR BEST HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME AT WESTFIELD?“I scored 33 points as a senior against Zionsville. I was 10 for 11 from the field and 13 for 14 from the throw line. It was before the 3-point line.”
2. WHO WAS THE TOUGHEST PLAYER YOU GUARDED IN HIGH SCHOOL?“During the 1977-78 season, we played Lawrence North. The Wildcats were No. 1, and I had to guard Brad Leaf, who was 6 feet 4 inches. I was 5 feet 8 inches ....and three-quarters.”
3. APPROXIMATELY HOW MANY PACERS, FEVER AND BIG TEN GAMES DID YOU BROADCAST LAST YEAR?“I will do roughly 120 games a year, and that does not count my schedule at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway—three races this season—or Big Ten Network games.”
4. DO YOU HAVE TIME TO HELP YOUR WIFE, TERRY, WITH THE HOUSEWORK?“I usually do my own laundry, and I like to vacuum. I like to think I am a neat freak, but my wife says I am good at stacking.”
5. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ON-AIR MISTAKE?“When I was 22 and at WWWY [Columbus], I was talking about the upcoming volleyball state tournament, and I mentioned that the ‘Volleyball Sexual Pairings’ had just been announced. The Columbus mayor called the station hotline and was laughing hysterically.”
6. AFTER WHAT SPORTS ANNOUNCERS DO YOU MODEL YOUR WORK?“I have taken something from a lot of guys, like Don Fischer [Indiana University], Marty Brennaman [Cincinnati Reds] and Joe Tait [Cleveland Cavaliers]. I also really like Ian Eagle [New Jersey Nets and CBS].”
7. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST MOMENT IN THE BOOTH?“Being part of Butler’s first run to the Sweet 16 in 2003. I will always remember the Louisville win in Birmingham. And I was on the call for J.R. Hildebrand’s crash in Turn 4 when he was leading the 2011 Indianapolis 500 on the last lap.”
8. DO YOU ENVISION YOURSELF BECOMING A CRUSTY, OLD ANNOUNCER WITH NO ENTHUSIASM FOR THE GAME?“Not at all. I started doing high school games for WXLW for $5 to $10 a game in the 1980s. I didn’t get the Pacers job until I was 45, and I know there are hundreds of people who want my job.”
9. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR BIGGEST FEAR IF WILL FERRELL’S CHARACTER RON BURGUNDY WAS YOUR COLOR ANNOUNCER FOR A GAME?“That I would be wiping the tears out of my eyes because he would have me laughing so much.”
10. DO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS DOING SO MANY GAME NIGHTS?“I have missed several of my sons’ (Evan, Wilson and Max) games. That has been difficult.”
Ray Compton is a former journalist and longtime sports marketing person.

Local Aims for Cadillac of Pizza CuttingWriter / Nathan Lamb
In the world of pizza cutting implements, local entrepreneur Tom Faludy has a new product he’s billing as a cut above the rest.
It’s called the Big Ass Pizza Cutter, and Faludy said it’s about kicking pizza parties up a notch.
Tom Faludy is a Geist resident & inventor of the Big Ass Pizza Cutter.

“Pizza is not really a solitary food,” he said. “It’s a shared food, so there’s a social context to it, and within that social context, this thing becomes a focal point and catalyst for conversation, fun and sharing.”
Cra ed stateside from stainless steel, the cu er sports a 22-inch tang-style blade, weighing in at roughly 2 pounds. It also features hickory handles and optional engraving on the blade.
Having worked much of the past year to develop the idea, Faludy said the idea was to combine the industrial-style cu ers from pizzerias with an “Old World” customized feel. He said it’s also designed for easy storage alongside baking pans.
e tool evolved through 11 di erent prototypes, re ning functionally, looks and performance, before Faludy launched a website to market the cu er in early February. He’s optimistic it’ll become a popular gi for guys who already have everything.
“I think guys are pre y hard to buy for,” he said. “ ey already have a shirt and tie and most of the things people think to get for them; I thought this would be a great gi .”
Faludy, 67, has lived near Geist Reservoir for roughly 18 months, since retiring from an executive position with Berkshire Hathaway. He remains active as a business consultant, saying he still works on the board of directors for three domestic companies and one in Australia.
at business background includes manufacturing, and Faludy said that played a role in the development of the pizza cu er. Speci cally, he said this project was also about nding a way to bring manufacturing back to Indiana.
“ is is a genuine American-made product with 100 percent American-made components, made by Americans in Middlebury, Ind.,” he said. “I think it re ects a mark of cra smanship.”
Originally from Hungary, Faludy came to the United States as a refugee at age 10. He discovered pizza four years later at a YMCA
summer camp and said it’s been a favorite ever since. One of Faludy’s favorite recipes is a Hungarian style pie (see recipe) that he calls the Goulash Pizza.
“Goulash kind of confers a Hungarian connotation,” he said. “Everybody who has tasted it has loved it.”
Faludy said the current plan is to market the cu er exclusively through the website, saying that ts with the customized business model. Looking ahead, he anticipates launching a new line of industrial-sized “Big Ass” barbecue implements this spring.
Asked about the name for his line of products, Faludy said the idea was to be irreverent and amusing.
“It’s all about fun, having a bit of a itude and not taking life too seriously,” he said.
“It’s not vulgar, it’s just kind of cheeky,” he added, at another point. “No pun intended there.”
Video demonstrations of the cu er are available on YouTube by searching for Big Ass Pizza Cu er, or visit bigasspizzacu er.com.
GOULASH PIZZA Start with a frozen thin-crust margherita or supreme pizza.
Add freshly chopped onions on top.
Microwave thin-sliced, spicy Hungarian sausage on paper towels to reduce the fat. Distribute the sausage slices on top of the pizza.
Spoon on a thin layer of lecso — a rich-flavored traditional Hungarian tomato sauce with cooked red pepper strips.
Sprinkle on a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack shredded cheeses to hold it all together.
Season the top with garlic powder, parsley and cracked pepper. Jalapeno pepper slices and/or banana pepper slices are optional.
Bake at 400˚ until the crust browns well.

- with Hans & Joe -In the past five years, we’ve seen an explosion of craft beer in the state of Indiana. Although iconic brands such as Budweiser have lost market share to “upstarts” such as 3 Floyds, Sun King and Upland (the three largest producers of craft beer in Indiana), about 95 percent of beer sold in the state is not made in Indiana. Nevertheless, the amount and quality of Indiana beer is at an all-time high, and the growth rate shows no sign of abatement. In this month’s article, instead of looking as specific seasonal brews, we’ll take a closer look at a few local breweries that are doing a particularly fine job of brewing beer.

3 FLOYDS3 Floyds is the largest and best-known brewery in Indiana. In fact, and with no hyperbole, 3 Floyds is world-famous when it comes to cra beer. e brewery is noted for its use of hops. Sometimes I feel as though I could identify 3 Floyds beer based on smell alone, such is the brewery’s mastery of hops. Dreadnaught, which is a Double IPA, has been consistently rated as one of the nest of its kind for many years, and the recent addition of Zombie Dust has only solidi ed 3 Floyds’ position atop the pantheon of producers of hoppy beers. For any beer drinkers who think that wheat beers are a waste of time, Gumballhead is an explosion of hop avor with relatively li le bi erness.
Most of 3 Floyds’ production comes in the form of Alpha King, Robert the Bruce and Gumballhead, but it is the Dark Lord Russian Imperial Stout that puts this brewery on the world map. e beer is only available for purchase in bo les one day out of the year, and you have to go to the brewery to buy it. ese days you even have to buy a ticket ahead of time to enter the property on Dark Lord Day (April 26 this year), as it has come to be known. I have been to this event in years past when it was much smaller—say between 500 and 1,500 people. ese days, a endance can reach well over 5,000.
SUN KINGAlthough Sun King brewed its rst batch of beer in 2009, the brewery has enjoyed a meteoric rise and is now the second largest brewer in the state behind 3 Floyds (which has been around since 1996). Along with its production of great beer, Sun King’s success can be equally a ributed to its use of social media. Sun King causes the average Joe (the kind of person who never cared much about beer as long as it was cold) to start considering not only where a beer is made but also its level of quality.
Sun King’s Sunlight Cream Ale is sure to satisfy the beer drinker who is looking for a BMC-like avor pro le but di erent, and the Osiris Pale Ale will quench the thirst of hopheads. Along with the aforementioned beers, Sun King’s year-round o erings include Wee Mac Sco ish Ale and an IPA that changes with the seasons. e brewery produces many other beers on a rotating basis. One of the nest and best known of these is Grapefruit Jungle, a massive IPA that will be released sometime in the mid- to late summer.
BIER BREWERYBier Brewery rst opened in November 2010. Unlike a few other recently opened Indiana breweries, the consistency of Bier Brewery’s products hasn’t wavered since day one, and while the quality has always been high, it is still ge ing be er with every batch. Bier is one of the state’s smallest breweries, but every ounce of beer made is turned over within approximately two weeks. is high turnover ensures that if you are drinking beer from Bier, generally speaking, you are drinking some of the freshest beer available anywhere.
TownePost.com / MAY 2014 / TOWNEPOST MEDIA NETWORK
Disclaimer: If I were forced to make such a proclamation at gunpoint, and I could consider each and every beer made by any particular brewery, I would have to say that Bier Brewery is my favorite brewery in Indiana due to the unrivaled freshness of its beer and the high level of quality in each and every style.

Not every Bier product is available all of the time. Instead, beers are released on a somewhat seasonal and sometimes arbitrary basis. It’s kind of like a restaurant with a menu that changes every day. And whereas many breweries are best known for a handful of particular beers, Bier makes such a wide variety of extremely high-quality beers that it is di cult to focus on any two or three in particular as head and shoulders above the rest. However, if I could have only three of Bier’s o erings, I would suggest DFG Imperial IPA; Dred Brown, which is a Brown Porter; and any Saison currently available.
BLOOMINGTON BREWING CO.BBC, or Bloomington Brewing Co., is known to some as “the other Bloomington brewery” and is unknown to many, but BBC is a favorite of mine. e Ruby Bloom Amber Ale is a smooth and malty amber ale with no hop bi erness. e Roo op IPA is a perfectly balanced IPA, and BBC’s periodic releases of single hop pale ales are truly not to be missed! As a bartender who sees the dates on the kegs here at Patrick’s Kitchen, I can say that BBC (along with Bier Brewery and Sun King) is consistently some of the freshest dra beer around.

UPLANDUpland has been one of my favorite breweries for seven or eight years now. I’m one of those cra beer drinkers who eschews most wheat beers, but Upland Wheat Ale is one of the few for which I would willingly pay. It is refreshing, great with seafood and shell sh in particular, and o en served with an orange (I strongly advise against this, by the way).
Upland has really di erentiated itself from every other brewery in the state with its sour program. at’s right, I’m talking about sour beer. e brewery makes several fruited Lambics as well as a Flanders Red Ale called Gilgamesh, all of which must be reserved online via a lo ery system.
ese sours are released on a rotating but somewhat regular basis, and it is these sour beers that have put Upland in the national spotlight of cra beer. e brewery recently launched a session IPA called Campside, which is perfect for those hopheads seeking to avoid the sometimes-crushing alcohol content of most IPAs.
Consumer warning: Although approximately 99.9 percent of all beer should be consumed while fresh, it is particularly important to drink a beer like Campside IPA as soon as possible—within a month-and-a-half of its bo ling date. And hooray for Upland for pu ing bo ling dates on its products!
TAXMAN BREWING CO.Everyone hold on to your wallets: e Taxman Brewing Co. has come to Bargersville! Taxman focuses on Belgian styles, but I’m sure that there will be a bit of meandering from the plan. e brewery o ers ve beers in its everyday lineup and will produce other beers as time and space allow. Both the Standard, which is a Belgian blonde ale, and the Exemption, which is a Belgian Triple, are great beers, and I look forward to tasting the Quali ed, which is a Belgian Quadrupel. e Taxman tasting room and restaurant will open in July.
This article is too short to allow for a comprehensive description of every great beer in Indiana, but it is representative of my favorite breweries. As someone who has seen the inside of a few breweries and deals with purchasing and serving the product, I think that these breweries will be around for a while and will continue to improve the quality of their products. If you find yourself in a place that serves any of the products I have discussed, chances are there are others that you should try, too. Just remember: Life is too short to always drink the same beer.

Writer / Janelle Morrison
You don’t have to head to a professional symphony to hear great classical music from Geist musicians. On May 9 and 10, eighth-grade orchestra students from Creekside Middle School and Carmel Clay Middle School will travel to Cincinnati to perform at a festival with several schools from around the country. In October, they’ll be involved in the Eighth Grade Orchestra Festival at the Palladium in Carmel.
None of this would happen without a commitment to arts education.
Regrettably, music-related community outreach programs are not commonplace in the United States, despite the community-building capacity of music. For the general attitude toward music to change, a broad base of people must be reached. Arts education is a great way to give people the opportunity to understand and appreciate music. Unfortunately, arts education in the United States is quick to be chopped out of budgets in difficult financial times. For example, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal government independent grants organization, has had its funding decreased by an average of $30 million per year since 1992.
Happily, the story is a little different here in Geist. The Center for the Performing Arts and the Carmel Clay Public Schools recognize the importance of musical education and the constraints on funding for related programs. To better serve the community’s youth, the two entities have collaborated their efforts, and through a dedicated partnership and shared resources, they are committed to engage, encourage and educate their impressionable students and young citizens. John Hughey, director of external relations for the Center for the Performing Arts, spoke about the collaboration between the center and the Carmel Clay Schools.

“From my perspective, the outreach that we provide to the schools and the interaction with the students was designed specifically for, and is available at, every developmental stage,” he said. “For example, we have the Peanut Butter & Jam concert series that takes place once a month on a Saturday morning and is designed for young children ages 1 to 7 years. They attend with their parents, and they have the opportunity to discover and experiment with many different styles and instruments. For some it might be the first time that they’ve ever heard a bagpipe.”

e Center for the Performing Arts has several outreach programs that work directly with the Carmel Clay Schools. For instance, the district’s third graders will study sounds in their science classrooms and then a end a program at the Palladium to discover the science of this world-
renowned hall, as the Palladium is a perfect laboratory to see how those principles play out in a real-life se ing. Carmel’s third-grade teachers have embraced this eld trip and have made it part of their curriculum. e Carmel Clay Schools’ h graders will a end the Sound Exciting experience and
a end a concert at the Palladium to hear the Carmel Symphony Orchestra perform.“Carmel’s h-grade students come to the Palladium, and for many of them this is the rst classical concert that they’ve a ended,” Hughey said. “We also recognize that at the middle school level, we have identi ed
that is a crucial stage when students are rst choosing their instrument that they want to play, and they need that extra encouragement to stay with that instrument, in hopes that they are part of their middle school orchestras and then go on to the wonderful high school orchestra program that is under the direction of Soo Han.
“We connected with all three of the middle schools here in Carmel and their orchestra directors and have come together with this wonderful program where they have created a combined orchestra, and we host that festival at the Palladium,” Hughey said. " e students now evolve from a ending a concert in a multipurpose room to learning how the Palladium works to performing on our stage at the middle school level — and that’s intended to inspire the young musicians.”
Along with Hughey, the directors from the Carmel Clay Schools are dedicated to providing their students with opportunities designed to encourage them to stick with it and practice to get be er.
“Practicing at your talents isn’t always fun,” Hughey explained. “Performing on stage and seeing how your life as a performer could evolve is one of the motives that we have. ey get a chance to perform with students that they don’t get to work with on a day-to-day basis and take direction from music teachers that they aren’t familiar with. So all of these skills that they’ll need throughout their musical career, they’re ge ing right there at the music festival that takes place every fall. We’re proud to host this event again this coming October.”

Hughey emphasized the importance of staying connected with the students throughout the school year and spoke in depth with Becky Sendi, orchestra director for Creekside Middle School. They discussed the outreach opportunities for guest conductors from the Palladium’s concerts and touring groups to instruct
master classes at the schools. In February, the Bahia Orchestra Group was on stage at the Palladium. The next day, they selected members of their orchestra to do a master class with the students at Creekside. This connected the students back to last October’s festival, when the students performed on stage and then were able to work with
professional musicians who also performed on that stage when they came to teach a class on how the students could improve.
Sendi strongly supports the partnership with the Center for the Performing Arts, along with the district’s music directors. She directs approximately 250 students in
Creekside Middle School’s orchestra program, which includes six different orchestra classes. She is dedicated to the diverse and unique opportunities that she involves her students in locally and regionally.
When her kids go to Cincinnati in May, an event they have participated in for several years, they’ll be getting accolades as well as feedback.
“We will go and play in front of judges,” Sendi said. “The judges will be judging on music standards for our particular group and provide us with feedback that we can use to help encourage our kids in various ways and [give] information on areas that we can improve.”
On a local stage, Sendi works with her fellow directors and Hughey to produce the annual Eighth Grade Orchestra Festival in the fall.
“[ John] is always very encouraging and eager to help us with the Eighth Grade Orchestra Festival," Sendi said. In 2012 all of the eighth-grade orchestras from Carmel performed at the Palladium for the first time. “It was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to perform on that stage, and it made them feel so important and so advanced in what they were doing. It really gave them a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, it’s a great opportunity for us as a district to get together and perform together in such a fantastic hall. I think that’s really special.”

GO-KARTING
FUELS A PASSION
FOR RACING
Carmel_May_2014.indd 32 4/30/14 2:20 PM

As Indianapolis prepares for the “greatest spectacle in racing” in May, some Carmel youth are warming up for a summer on the go-kart circuit, pu ing the pedal to the medal in pursuit of the checkered ag and potentially a
career in motorsports. For many well-known professional race car drivers, including NASCAR legends Je Gordon and Tony Stewart and Indianapolis 500 competitor Sco Goodyear, go-karting primed a passion for racing.
“We never introduced any of our kids to anything motorized,” said Sco Goodyear, who has 11 starts in the Indianapolis 500, nearly won three times and experienced a successful auto sports career. “I’m not sure if this was intentional, or because we were always around racing because of my occupation, but we just did other things with the kids as a di erent outlet. All the kids were into di erent types of sports.”
But, while enjoying a break at their northern Indiana co age, his wife Leslie suggested they take the kids to the go-kart rental track. “ at was the start of karting for Michael. He loved it, and a er two hours of driving karts, I said to him it was time to go. He talked about the karts all the way home. I arranged for him to do a couple of novice races at Newcastle Kart Track. e track owner, Mark Dismore, and I used to race karts against each other as kids.”
Racing tends to be a family a air. It takes dedication, commitment and weekends. Brandon Newey, a sophomore at Purdue, started racing when he was 11 years old and has progressed from karting to Pro Mazda to Indy Lights. Brandon’s 16-year-old twin brothers, Justin and Ryan, race, too, although they are more focused on other sports. And their father, Steve, is a race engineer and co-owner of Bryan Herta Autosport, along with former IndyCar driver Bryan Herta.
“We spent many weekends, holidays and even Mother’s Day at the track,” said Pa y Newey, Brandon’s mother. “I wanted Brandon to understand that racing is not the top priority. He always had to get good grades to continue to race. He wants to see how far he can go and would like to make it to the Indy 500.”
“It is wonderful to watch Davis race and sometimes very scary due to the speed and closeness of the karts during the races,” said Kristen Durre , mother of 16-year-old Davis Durre . Davis and his father, Dean, spend a lot of time together; most fathers are the chief mechanic and team coordinator for young drivers. “ ey spend a lot of time working on ways to improve the performance of the kart and trying to gure out strategies regarding the setup of the kart.”

Kristen notes that while Davis’ goals are to develop his skills and progress to open wheel, he realizes it is going to take nancial support through sponsors and that only a few talented drivers actually make it to the Indy 500.
Sco maintains that sports teach kids commitment, discipline, focus and, most of all, the ups and downs of competing. “One thing I love is the ‘up early in the morning’ to drive to the track for local events, and the road trips to compete at di erent tracks around the country, as well as the fact Michael has made friends and they hang out at the track.”
“ e speed and excitement of auto racing and the friendships built among the auto racing community are a positive to this sport,” Kristen said. “ e negative is de nitely the cost of karting and
transporting the kart and the equipment when traveling, which you don’t have with traveling soccer, football or lacrosse.” And, she adds, the higher risk of motorsports and potential for crashing are very real.
“All sports are dangerous,” Pa y says. “Make sure they really want to do it, and do not push them beyond their skill level. Brandon has had a broken thumb and been run over by a kart. Hands and feet get hurt the most when crashing. e kids have to learn to take their hands o the steering wheel and pull legs back when they crash.”
“If the kids are having fun, then they will enjoy going to the track,” says Sco , who tells parents to let the child lead the way and choose the level of competition that ts best. A er all, the child is in the driver’s seat.

While many of us are emerging from a long hibernation and feverishly cultivating our flower beds, the organizers of the CarmelFest Has Talent contest are already well underway with plans for this year’s competition in July. This annual contest takes place during the renowned CarmelFest Independence Day celebration in downtown Carmel and seeks out the best undiscovered vocal talent in Hamilton County and surrounding areas.
CarmelFest Has Talent began in 2009 under the direction of its first chairperson, Daris Blickman, as an original idea to add an additional venue and variety for the CarmelFest entertainment lineup.
New to the program but not to the Carmel scene are this year’s chairpersons for the competition: Carmel residents Chris and Kelli Shrewsbury Lewis. This husband-and-wife duo form an incredibly talented pair of artists in their own right and are eager to put their signatures on CarmelFest’s popular vocal contest.
Chris is the director of programs for the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative. Additionally, he serves as director of the Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy and Competition. Chris also oversees additional educational and outreach programs. He holds a master’s degree in education and has worked as an educator and special education liaison for the New York City Department of Education. He is an accomplished musician, professional vocalist, choral director and voice teacher. Chris and Kelli met as members of the vocal jazz octet Pieces of 8 in New York.
Kelli’s credentials and music background are just as impressive as her husband’s. She is the owner of and educator at Little
Nightingales Music Together, a pioneering facility for early childhood music and movement education. Music Together offers classes for children from birth through kindergarten that gives parents and caregivers the chance to actively participate and joyfully share songs, rhymes, movement and instrument play, both in music class and in their daily lives.
Kelli was eager to bring this popular early childhood music program back to her native Indiana. She discovered Music Together while living in New York City when her daughter was just 13 months old. She immediately fell in love with the program as she watched the amazing musical leaps her daughter took that very first semester. As soon as possible, Kelli took the teacher training program and became a registered Music Together teacher. She taught for three-and-a-half years at one of the largest centers in New York and was able to train and work with many different teachers, all with unique styles.
Kelli has a bachelor of fine arts degree in musical theater from Millikin University. As a member of the Actors Equity Association, she has performed in countless musicals and theatrical productions across the country. Having studied vocal technique in college and throughout her musical career in New York City, Kelli has sung professionally in such diverse styles as jazz, pop, rock, gospel and cabaret.
Chris and Kelli shared their interest in serving as the chairpersons for this year’s CarmelFest Has Talent this year and the vision they have for the competition going forward.
“Two years ago, I was approached by the previous chairpersons, Marnie Glanner and Tatyana Komarova, to be a judge,” Chris explained. “So I judged the prelims and finals, and I loved it.
CarmelFest Has Talent features talent from three different age categories and promotes undiscovered talent from Carmel and surrounding communities. (Photo submitted)

Marnie invited Kelli to judge last year, so we were both on board. What I love about CarmelFest Has Talent is that it celebrates the community and people of all ages. is community has such a great support and love for the arts, and that’s what brought us here. As a Carmel resident and as part of e Great American Songbook Initiative, our mission is to educate and inspire by celebrating the Great American Songbook. e Great American Songbook is still being wri en. It’s not just the old music; it’s all the music that people sing at CarmelFest Has Talent. I view this as a part of my work to promote, celebrate, inspire and educate through music.”
Kelli shares her husband’s exuberance about being a part of this event and feels that it is a way for her to connect with the community under the auspices of her profession and passion for music.
“It’s really exciting for me to be a part of CarmelFest Has Talent and this community,” Kelli said. “I love being connected to the families through music.”
Together, their goal is to grow the number of entries and get more people involved. Chris and Kelli want to involve the audience more in terms of making the event less of a concert and more of an experience similar to America’s Got Talent.
“Our big focus this year is ge ing the word out in a broader sense,” Chris said. “We want to get more people involved to come out, audition and participate. Going forward, we’ve talked about making it more of a celebration of the arts. is year, we’re still going to focus on singers, but we want to expand that going forward to feature a variety of performers and talent acts. We want to tap into our resources of the local school’s music programs, music organizations, private teachers and studios, and churches even more.”
Kelli concluded with her thoughts on the endless potential that CarmelFest Has Talent can produce and on the positive impact that it has and will continue to have on the Carmel community.“I believe that CarmelFest Has Talent will keep growing with new and creative ideas,” Kelli said. “ is competition is such a fun experience, and there’s so much going on. Why not make it even bigger and be er? We have plans to make it even more of an extravaganza for the entire community.”
With Chris and Kelli’s high level of energy and comprehensive vision, CarmelFest Has Talent could produce the next America’s Got Talent Winner or a future Grammy winner—someone whose humble beginnings included a moment in the spotlight at CarmelFest Has Talent.

Nicole, through active participation in her local parent-teacher organization, saw a need to provide clothes for children in Hamilton County schools. She started the “Comfort Closet” in her basement about six years ago as an outreach to underprivileged elementary-aged children in Hamilton County.
Nicole has established referral relationships with school nurses at nearly every Hamilton County school. Nurses let the Comfort Closet know about children in need, and the Comfort Closet puts together out ts to discreetly give to the students.
Comfort Closet has grown out of Nicole’s basement and is now housed at Carmel United Methodist Church. If you’re interested in helping the Comfort Closet, you can donate new or gently used school-appropriate clothing, size 4 and up, at the church.
Congratulations to Nicole for being named this month’s “Helping Hands Award” recipient for the great work that she and the Comfort Closet do in providing clothes to needy school-aged children in Hamilton County.

On April 4, 2009, a beautiful bride anxiously awaited the moment where she would stand beside her groom instead of sitting vigil beside his hospital bed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as she had only three years before. On that very blessed day, Nikki Bleill married Marine Corporal Josh Bleill, her best friend and a partner for life.
Five years later, they celebrate their two beautiful children, Ali Isabella, 3, and Gunner Isaiah, 18 months, and this month, we celebrate Nikki and have named her “Mother of the Year” for our May issue. Together she and Josh had to learn to build their lives around Josh’s injuries from an Iraqi battlefield, losing both of his legs just above his knees. Together they are raising a family and speak to others about how blessed they truly are.
I spoke with Nikki’s husband, Josh, about what he loves and admires most about his wife and what he wants people to know about this special lady.
“With my job and traveling schedule, she is by far the glue of our family,” Josh said. “She holds everything together. Even when I’m here, she holds everything together. She’s just amazing with our kids. She taught for 12 years and decided to stay home, which was the best decision for our kids. She does everything from holding our house together to getting things ready for the days ahead, and everything appears seamless because of her. Even with my physical disabilities, it’s like nothing has changed. It’s amazing how much she does and how hard she works. We’ve known each other since college, so she’s put up with me for a long time.”
Josh spoke openly about Nikki’s support during his stay at Walter Reed and presently as each day presents its challenges to them. Josh’s recovery is a process, a journey in which they have chosen to walk together.
“She was my strength throughout my injury,” Josh reflected. “She was at Walter Reed with me and got me through all of that, standing by my side. I knew she’d be a fabulous mother just by the kind of person she is. Her faith has been a big role in our relationship, and obviously that holds us together. We understand there’s a purpose for us, and taking care of our kids comes first for both of us. Right now she spends a lot more time with them, as I travel. She gives them every opportunity possible, taking Ali to dance and gymnastics and Gunner to
Gymboree. Nikki is absolutely amazing. She’s the one who deserves the praise. She’s the one who pulls it together and is behind the scenes, running everything. She is my best friend, a leader, an amazing woman, a mother and wife.”
Nikki and Josh opened their home to me and allowed me the opportunity to hang out and be inspired by their story, their energy and their faith.
“We know that we’re blessed,” Josh said. “We’ve been so very blessed with the things that we do, my job, and we want to pass it on. This isn’t about us. This is about our faith and God’s plan for us.”

Not every family can survive what Nikki and Josh have endured. is family came through their crisis and pain stronger and resilient. Nikki had to look deep within and nd her inner strength. It was a choice that she made to unconditionally love and support her injured husband and their two children. She could not let herself just lie down and quit, even in her darkest hours. She found comfort and direction through her strong sense of faith.
“I am completely humbled, beyond words, for this title,” Nikki humbly stated. “It’s not every day that I feel like a mother of the year. Every day brings new struggles, especially with two small children. Sometimes I feel like I’m not always doing the best job, but I know that I am doing my best for them and for our marriage. People have told me how fast kids will grow. We just got back from Disney World, and I spent the week with just Ali, and I realized how fast it truly is going. I’m trying to treasure special moments each day. Even on days when I think this is not what I had in mind, I am thankful for these moments and for the blessing that she is and the blessing that my son is, too. It’s really moving to watch Josh with them. He is a fantastic dad. I would not be who I am today without him, his support and his love.”
Nikki talked more speci cally about how her faith keeps her in balance so that she can put her focus on her husband’s needs, her children’s needs and on the needs of people who just need help.

“My faith, our faith, plays a huge role. I honestly don’t know where I would be or who I would be without my faith. It’s knowing that I don’t need to focus so much on the struggles that we have here and but to focus on beinthrog centered in our faith. Beyond faith, my friends and family help so much. Whether it’s a phone call or dropping off a meal, it makes such a difference. When Josh had surgery recently, the overwhelming support of friends bringing food and making sure that we were taken care of was amazing. The simple texts and calls help us through, and we have a fantastic core group of friends and family that go beyond themselves to help and make sure that people, in general, are OK.”
Nikki works with the Semper Fi Fund for assistance with special needs for Josh, and in return she advocates on behalf of them to help raise awareness of the support that the fund gives to wounded veterans and veterans in need.
“They have been there to assist us with whatever we’ve needed,” Nikki said. “Whether it was the elevator for our house, the hand controls for our cars or helping us get a service dog, they are a fantastic organization that gives to wounded veterans.”
I asked Nikki what she would like to share with other wives, companions and mothers who may be searching for someone who understands what they, like Nikki, have been through and are rising above.
“When things are placed on your heart, they’re placed on your heart for a reason,” Nikki explained. “When you hear that voice tell you to reach out and make a phone call or stop in to check in with someone, listen to that voice. I believe that voice is God telling me what to do, and I believe that if you do that, you not only bless the person but you will also be blessed. If you are living the life that you are supposed to be living and are walking in your faith, then you will be blessed, too. The testament to our marriage has been about having lots of patience, lots of understanding and, of course, our faith. It is why we are here, why we are still married and why we have kids. I fully believe that on challenging days in our marriage, I have to remember to love him like Jesus does. I am not any easier to live with, and we have to give each other unconditional love. It’s about taking one day at a time, not putting pressure on each other, making sure that each one is taken care of with our emotional needs, our time, our sleep, and making sure that we are fulfilled.”
After this conversation and in an attempt to give Josh a chance to play up any amazing talents or skills that could outstage his incredibly talent wife, I asked who the better cook between them is.
Josh quickly proclaimed, “I am the better cook, there’s no question! She will easily admit that.” Nikki cast a loving and honest glance toward her husband and conceded gracefully. “Hands down,” she said. “He’s the better cook.”

Andrea & Ashley Johnson, husband/wife duo & owners of the Blue Mile, worked with local brewery Flat 12 Bierwerks to co-brand a pale ale beer crafted just for runners.

I t’s not unusual to assume runners are health nuts — and that beer would be the last thing on their postrun go-to list. Indeed, the folks at Flat12
Bierwerks, a cra beer company on North Dorman Street, were a bit perplexed when they were approached about creating a co-branded beer for runners.
But it all makes perfect sense to Ashley Johnson and his wife, Andrea, who are both big cra -beer lovers as well as owners of the BlueMile specialty running stores in Carmel, Fishers, Broad Ripple and other locations in Indiana and Kentucky.
e Johnsons approached Flat12 about coming up with a beer geared toward runners “that people who exercise would like to drink a er they run,” Ashley said. “ ey said, ‘Why would anyone want that?’ [and I said], ‘Well, they’re drinking something, aren’t they?’.… at was when it all started.”
“When we rst moved here in 2000, there wasn’t a lot of cra beer in Indianapolis,” said Andrea, who is thrilled that cra beers have gradually taken hold in the area. “We have this BlueMile [running] series in the summertime, and we started coming to Flat12 [a erward]. Runners and walkers and tness enthusiasts tend to be very active, outgoing and like to try new things. .. . . So they were joining us at the di erent breweries, and we thought that we should have a beer for Blue Mile.
“We started pestering the Flat12 people about it, and they nally agreed. It kind of blossomed from hanging out at Flat12,” she said.
Once the folks at Flat12 were on board, it was just a ma er of coming up with the right beer, which has been dubbed Brew Mile. “It’s an accessible, light, easy-drinking beer,” said Flat12 sales representative Derreck Ramsey of the extra-pale ale. It “drinks clean and has a nishing hop kick.” And the beer’s look meshes nicely with Blue Mile.

“They’ve got a sleek truck. They’ve got cool stores where everything feels like it’s very well thought out,” said Flat12’s vice president of marketing, Bob Weaver. Flat12 has been in the area for three years, and the owners were happy to connect with an established business like Blue Mile.
Once the team came up with the name for the beer and the idea for the label, they started thinking about what the bottle would look like.
“Then we started doing some canning with our Half Cycle IPA, and that’s when we started thinking about runners and the scenarios about where they’re enjoying their beer — whether it’s the finishers’ tent or on vacation or on the beach somewhere or just home. Maybe a can would be preferable?” Weaver said. “So we started going in that direction. That actually provided a really cool look and feel that fell in line with the
way Blue Mile does things. This can feels nice and trim and just put together. It felt like it fit a lot better [than a bottle].”
Ramsey is excited about Brew Mile’s potential, given the great sense of community that’s built into running. “Typically, you’ll get a bunch of people that will meet up on the weekends and go for a run, do impromptu 2- or 3-mile runs, and
then they’ll all go out together,” he said. His goal is to get Brew Mile into all the pubs and restaurants these runners already head to.
“Even people that aren’t runners [will like it]. It’s a great beer,” Ramsey said.
“It took a while for us to get there, but when we got there, it was like, That’s it!” Weaver said, punctuating his comment with a
clap.
Brew Mile, “the official beer of the finishers’ tent,” is available on draft right now and will be available in cans this summer. Ask for it around town, or check it out at Flat12 Bierwerk’s taproom at 414 N. Dorman St. Thursdays through Sundays. For more information, call Flat12 at 317-635-BEER. Learn more about BlueMile at BlueMile.com.
Bob Weaver, VP of Marketing for Flat 12 Bierwerks, led the taste testing with runners to find just the right taste. Watch a video interview about the new beer at TownePost.com.

ATTENTION, ACUTE OR CHRONIC BACK OR SPINE PAIN SUFFERERS! ere is a local medical facility, Midwest Pain & Spine, that specializes in e ective alternative treatments using minimally invasive procedures to diagnose, treat and manage your condition. Don’t assume that all traditionally trained orthopedic physicians have the requisite training and experience required to provide the minimally invasive treatments made possible by the new advanced surgical technologies.
Dr. Steven Levine, who has years of specialized training in pain management, established Midwest Pain & Spine in 2001. e clinic’s goal is to reduce or eliminate pain and allow patients to continue to have a more active and enjoyable lifestyle. Dr. Levine has been a pioneer in the development and use of minimally invasive surgical techniques to eliminate back pain. He is a founding member and vice president of the Society for Advanced Spinal Interventions, an organization dedicated to the education, training and professional representation of the emerging eld of minimally invasive spinal surgery.
Dr. Levine is also a frequent lecturer and educator in the eld of interventional pain medicine.
According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, in a traditional open spinal surgery, the surgeon makes a 3- to 5-inch-long incision that can damage so tissue and muscle. As a result, there is a greater potential for muscle and ligament injury, and patients may have a di erent kind of pain a er surgery then they felt prior to surgery. is can lead to a longer recovery period and chronic pain. In a minimally invasive surgical procedure, the surgeon uses a small endoscope, which results in minimal damage to muscle and ligaments and maintains the normal structural integrity of the spine. e smaller incision and less invasive procedure cause less bleeding, minimal scar formation and a shorter recovery time.
If you su er from acute or chronic back pain, contact Midwest Pain & Spine to discover the minimally invasive treatments available to treat your painful condition and get you back to enjoying life fully.

I am a full-time college student and football player. My back and leg pain was keeping me not only off the fi eld but sometimes out of class. Dr. Levine was able to accommodate my schedule, and over winter break, I had a minimally invasive endoscopic diske-ctomy. I was awake during the procedure, and about halfway through, I became aware that I was suddenly pain-free! After the procedure, I had very little discomfort and only a Band-Aid on my back. I was able to return to practice and conditioning very quickly, and now I am looking forward to the start of the upcom-ing season. Thanks to Dr. Levine, I have my life back.” —C.L.
As a radiologist, I was well aware that something needed to be done to alleviate my back pain and the severe pain radiating into my leg. I was told I needed spine surgery. I did some research and found Dr. Levine, a well-known expert in the fi eld of mini-mally invasive spine surgery. I fl ew to Indianapolis and had the procedure performed on a Friday. He was able to achieve direct visualization with a small endoscope, and with the use of a laser and small instruments, he was able to remove my disk herniation without having to subject me to general anesthesia. I was awake and comfortable throughout the surgery. I left the surgery center with a Band-Aid on my back and my pain was completely gone. By Saturday evening I was well enough to join Dr. Levine and his wife for dinner. I returned home to Florida on Sunday and was back to seeing my own patients on Monday. It’s been two years and I am still pain-free. I would recommend a minimally invasive diskectomy over open spine surgery to all my patients. Dr. Levine was terrifi c and has more than 14 years of experience in this technique and is actively involved in training surgeons on how to perform this procedure.” —Dr. S.B., Ft. Myers, Florida

At nearly every country club, you hear members complaining incessantly about slow play. But not at The Club at Putnam Park. That’s because some of its members are wheeling around at speeds approaching 140 mph. Not in golf carts, though. This is a motorsports country club.
While it’s in rural Putnam County, you won’t find a dirt track, demolition derbies, Dale Jr. T-shirts or confederate flags. The club is built around Putnam Park, a world-class racetrack located only 50 minutes southwest of Indianapolis. In addition to access to a world-class track, members of The Club also get to relax in a clubhouse equal to those offered by the finest golf clubs in Indianapolis.
Putnam Park is a 1.8-mile asphalt track made up of 10 turns with a half-mile straightaway where members’ cars can reach speeds in excess of 140 mph. (I can attest to this!) The track was specifically designed with safety in mind, because it is, for the most part, surrounded by flat, grass fields with very few opportunities to make contact with any obstacles. If you unexpectedly leave the track, you’ll end up speeding through a grassy field rather than hitting a wall. This makes for an ideal circuit for amateur drivers who enjoy an occasional adrenaline rush and want to test the limits of their cars and their driving abilities.
Putnam Park came to be in 1990, when Richard Diasio and son Chris Diasio, a Zionsville resident and current owner of the track, started looking for a location to build a private race track. They settled on Putnam County because of its proximity to Indianapolis and the fact that there were few zoning restrictions.
When completed in 1991, the track became — and remains today — a frequent practice facility for various world-class professional racing teams, including Indy 500 teams, Indy Lights teams and the current Audi Motorsports team. Last year, former F-1 and Indy 500 driver Rubens Barrichello practiced at Putnam Park in advance of the Grand-Am Rolex Series race at the IMS.
The track also is a favorite venue for various local and regional sports car clubs and for corporate outings.
DR. MATT PRIDDY of Carmel is a local physician who started running his Porsche Boxster Spyder at Putnam Park as a member of the local Porsche Club. His car is pretty much a stock Spyder. In fact, the day I met Priddy, he had driven his Spyder to the office. He decided to become a member of The Club at Putnam Park after he found himself wanting more track time and greater convenience than he was able to get as a member of the Porsche Club. Dr. Priddy liked the idea of having a country-club atmosphere and camaraderie at a place where he felt safe putting his Porsche through its paces.
JUSTIN TYSDAL, another Carmel resident, was first introduced to Putnam Park when he bought a Ducati motorcycle from a local dealer who would occasionally rent Putnam Park for customer days. He soon decided he wanted more time on the track, so he became a member of The Club. Tysdal still runs his motorcycle at Putnam Park and has added a modified BMW Z-3 to his stable. The day I was at the track, he was having a great father-and-son day as he and his 70-year-old dad were taking turns running his Z-3.
KURT FAZEKAS, a Geist-area resident and his 81-year-old father, Dale, are both members of The Club at Putnam Park. Dale was a two-time national champion of the SCCA. Kurt has a new 911 Porsche Turbo but still drives at Putnam Park one of the special 944 Turbo race cars that his father raced as a member of the Porsche factory team.

To more fully utilize this facility, Chris and his father got the idea of creating a unique motor-sports country club atmosphere built around the Putnam Park track. e Diasios spent in excess of $2 million to upgrade the facilities. e renovations included a new clubhouse and a new, fully functioning garage area (think gasoline alley at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway). e Club just started construction on an additional building that will provide 10 garages that members can rent year-round to store their cars and equipment.
e clubhouse includes a club room with a bar topped by exotic granite, numerous at-screen TVs, and men’s and women’s locker rooms with travertine-walled showers and private restrooms (think Bridgewater Club or e Hawthorns).
Just like the nest golf or tennis country clubs, e Club at Putnam Park also o ers its members high-level instruction from experienced professionals. Unlike golf clubs, though, Putnam Park’s professional instructors happen to be professional race-car drivers — and their services are included as part of the membership.
Putnam Park began o ering memberships in 2011 and today has about 50 members made up of many people from central Indiana. However, nearly half of the members live more than two and a half hours from the track.
e track is available to members 140 days of the year. Some members use the same cars they drive to the o ce in (think Porsche and BMWs instead of Ferrari or Lamborghini), while others bring out more exotic models. e common element for all members is the desire to continue to improve as drivers and to push their cars, irrespective of the type, to its limit.
A few days ago, club member Kurt Fazekas graciously invited me to ride shotgun with him on a few hot laps around the track in his 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and his older Porsche 945 Turbo. e rides were exhilarating and eye-opening.
In the 911, we began from a standing start somewhere near the beginning of the half-mile straightaway. By the time Fazekas began braking for the rst corner, we were doing north of 120 mph. I thought that was fast — until we had time to pick up some speed during the rst lap, soon to sail down the straightaway at more than 140 mph! (I maintained a rm grip on the door handle during the entire time.)
If you’re interested in driving fast or learning to drive fast in a safe environment and with the amenities of a true country club, take a look at e Club at Putnam Park. For membership information call Chris Diasio at 317-559-1500. Like most country clubs, e Club o ers several di erent membership levels that Chris can discuss with you.

Most of us take great pride in the appearance of the exterior of our homes. Every spring we don’t give a second thought to spending hundreds or sometimes thousands of dollars on new owers, shrubs and mulch, while at
the same time, doing absolutely nothing to enhance the appearance of our homes at night.Outdoor lighting not only beauti es your home but also increases its security. Luminocity, a locally owned and operated business, has
specialized in designing and installing outdoor lighting environments for nearly 10 years. Luminocity’s owner, Karl Lundberg, brings the same high level of passion and sense of pride to Luminocity that he did in his military career.
Karl retired from the U.S. Marine Corp at the rank of Colonel. His philosophy with respect to customer service is that customers should be treated with the same level of trust and respect that he would want for his parents.
ere are many alternatives when it comes to outdoor lighting. You can purchase solar-powered lights, which put o a strange blue glow but do li le to actually illuminate your home. You can hire the same guy who spreads mulch in your ower beds to string some outdoor lights around the house haphazardly, like Christmas lights. Or you can call a real professional like Karl at Luminocity, whose only business is to create an outdoor lighting environment based on the particular characteristics of your home and the atmosphere you would like to create.
When you call Luminocity, expect a personal visit from Karl, who will inspect your property and talk to you about what sort of lighting experience you have envisioned. Moreover, Luminocity uses only high-quality outdoor lighting xtures with LED bulbs.
LET LUMINOCITY ENLIGHTEN YOUR HOME
It is hard to fi nd really good customer service these days, but Karl Lundberg epitomizes excellent customer service! We had Luminocity install our landscape lights about three years ago and were extremely happy with the installation....Karl was very quick to respond and fi xed the lights very promptly and didn’t even charge us for the repair. I would highly recommend Luminocity for any landscape lighting needs! Excellent job. Karl is the true professional.” - John, Carmel
Thank you for all your help! The lighting project is beautiful and far exceeded my expectations! I will be certain to highly recommend you to all my friends! You are an artist!” - Wayne, Carmel

MYARTDoes your child love to draw and paint? Or do they wish they could draw be er, but don’t know how? Or have you always wanted to learn? en discover MyArt, where hundreds of students ages 4 to beginner adult have learned how to draw and paint with amazing results.
Unlike most art classes, MyArt takes a hands-on systematic approach to art instruction that breaks down the process of drawing into basic components. In a peaceful and non-competitive atmosphere, students learn how to create art, much like a musician learns to play an instrument. Moreover, the instruction is directed by two individuals with formal education in art and years of teaching this same proven system.
Barb Hegeman and Sylvia Runningen, who both have college degrees in ne art and are experienced graphic designers, are the owners of the local MyArt studios. Barb owns and operates the studio located in Zionsville, while Sylvia owns and operates the studios in Carmel, Fishers and Noblesville. ey have known each other and taught art
together for many years. In fact, Sylvia was a teacher for Barb before Barb recently sold the studios in Carmel, Fishers and Noblesville to Sylvia.
MyArt o ers small group instruction for people of all ages. is summer, MyArt is o ering one- and four-day camps for students as young as 5 years old beginning June 9. MyArt also o ers canvas painting events for children and adults, along with birthday parties and private events. Barb and Sylvia have had students who have been coming to MyArt for years, going on to win awards and pursue careers in the visual arts. is spring, one of their high school students, who started with MyArt at an early age, was recognized nationally for her artwork and will be awarded the American Visions Award at Carnegie Hall later this year.
If you or child has an interest in art and you’re looking for an instructional studio with proven results, contact one of the MyArt studios near you or visit their website at myartindy.com.

I was given back the freedom to live my life, even travel. I have peace of mind when I am away, knowing everything is fine. Caretakers has provided consistent quality care. —John B., Husband, Zionsville, IN
I can testify Caretakers gave her more years of quality life than she EVER would have had without them. They truly cared for her, and that she was getting the best care at home she possibly could. —Mary S., Step-Daughter, Carmel, IN
Being out of town, Caretakers filled the void when I couldn’t be there to help my mother. They were with her for over 10 years, first at her home and then at assisted living until she passed away at 103 years old. To this day, I still stay in contact with several of her caregivers because they were so good to my mother. —Judy, Daughter, Carmel, IN
