The world isn’t black and white. So, why is your ad?

From September 10-13 guests Ed and Anne Adams from Killyleagh, Northern Ireland visited with her sister Kathy and Bill Anthony and with other family members in Carnduff as well.Garrett Ball (Airdrie, AB) spent two weeks visiting his parents, Garnett and Jean. While here they all spent from September 7-14 on a fi shing trip to Jan Lake. Afternoon visitors on September 16 with Edel and Gray Cowan were her cousin Paul Sandgaard and his wife Marilyn (Moosomin). Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Wayne Frith, who passed away September 17, 2015 at Galloway Health Centre, Oxbow. Wayne had taught school here in Alida for a year or two around 1958. Visiting with Glennis Peterson on Saturday, September 20 were her daughter Donna McDonald, granddaughter Courtney George and great-grandson Jaxsen George (all of Lang, SK) and while here they also visited with Ben and Marcelle Peterson. Hubby and I (Gray and Edel) left on Thursday, September 17 on a little excursion trip to Alberta to attend the 10th Anniversary of Canada’s Bomber Command Memorial Celebrations at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton, AB. On the fi rst lap of the trip we stopped over at Assiniboia, did some touring around and really enjoyed the famous Petroglyphs (rock carvings) which were created by the Aboriginal people thousands of years ago across the northwestern plains. These petroglyphs at St Victor historic Provincial Park are one of Saskatchewan’s prehistoric rock art sites. On Friday morning we headed for Alberta, we soon reached Medicine Hat and wouldn’t you know it – Gray noticed a sign “Airport” and we just HAD to stop and take a look around there. Now I’m beginning to wonder how many of these “STOPS” we’re going to HAVE to make before we reach Nanton. We reached our destination and that evening we witnessed the “Night-Run” of the Lancaster’s Merlin engines (all 4). We then attended the activities on Saturday beginning with Lancaster Cockpit Tours. Then the engine Run-ups of the Lancaster, the Bristol Hercules and the Fleet Fawn engine run up’s were held which were very impressive (and noisy!). A demonstration of the Lancaster Gun-Turret was held. A fl y-over of two “Yellow Thunder” Harvard planes owned by the Watson Brothers was very impressive. Guest speaker Stephane Guevremont, a former Aircraft mechanic, and historian on the Canadian aircraft industry, and the history of the RCAF in WWII gave a dynamic, multi-media presentation telling the story of “A Day in the Life of Bomber Command” with a focus on the 10,000 Canadians who lost their lives fl ying in bomber command and whose names are etched on the Memorial Wall. The re-dedication of this Memorial Wall was the highlight of the ceremonies (as far as I was concerned). Elinor Florence also gave a book reading featuring her highly regarded book “Bird’s Eye View” which was very interesting, and of course she would sign her book for you if wished to purchase a copy. All in all it was a very knowledgeable and enjoyable event to say the least. One thing that we wanted to make note of was to fi nd the engraved plate that was featured on one of the memory boards in memory of Gray’s uncle, Flight-Sargent Wesley Bailey. We returned home September 21. Autumn is offi cially here now (by the calendar) as we enter into a new season which hopefully will be a pleasant one with lots of nice fall weather. Most of the harvesting is probably completed by now, some will be waiting on their fl ax crops to mature and get ready for harvesting, which usually means a good frost, and I don’t really want a visit from Jack Frost yet (sorry guys). The garden produce is pretty well done and ready to be taken indoors for winter storage. The fl owers are sure giving their last burst of gorgeous blooms now, enjoy them while you can. The fall suppers will be beginning soon, so one will have to keep their eyes on the coming event ads and try not to miss too many of these delicious suppers in the area. Gee just a hint editors – why not make a list of all the upcoming fall suppers only that are held in your cover area, would sure make for easy notifi cation as to where and when these would be held. It’s time once again to collect for your local food bank – here in Alida you may bring your donation to the Post Offi ce during their working hours from September 21-27. Let’s remember the less fortunate ones in our area.
