Moneyraised would be used for the erectionof a youth centre, near the Trimpark.Both old and young could find much toenjoy at the festival, because program-mes involving everyone in Carletonvillewould be presented daily. The climaxwould be the crowning of Miss Springduring the Spring dance.

A SA Transport Service employeesurvived after crashing four meters tothe ground when current from a highvoltage cable passed through his body.Mr. J J Northman of Newlands wasworking on the overhead cable on therailway line between Bank and Middel-vlei when the current was accidentlyswitched on.

The violence of the shock threw himfrom the top of the pole on which hewas working, to the ground more thanfour meters below. His one lung waspierced by a rib and he sustained otherminor cuts and bruises. He was givenemergency treatment on the spot by pa-ramedics and then transported to hos-pital.

At the time of going to press his con-dition appeared to be satisfactory.

The endof a casedealingwith thehorri-fic death of a six month-old baby hascome to an end with just one thing out-standing, the murderer’s sentence.The case dates back to 15 February,

2012,whenMr andMrsMohandLettieMostefaoui hired a young woman tolook after their baby, Kamel, while theyworked during the day.The young woman’s mother worked

for the family for long, and when shewanted to resign, said she could re-commend someone to work in her pla-ce, her teenaged daughter, Mpho Seko-nye. “I could see that Mpho was stillyoung,” Lettie tells. “But her mothersaid that she had already, at her youngage, taken care of a baby from a monthold to four years of age.”Lettie said she trusted Mpho. “I also

told her not to clean my house at all,but only to take care of Kamel, nothingelse.”The first day went well, other than a

small cut onKamel’s little lip. “She saidmy little boy had fallen off the couch.”Lettie says that their lounge suite wasexceptionally low and that if her babyhad fallen, he couldn’t have gotten hurttoo badly, as there was also a ratherthick carpet under the couch. “I didn’tthink much of it, put some balm on hislittle lip, and continued as normal.”The Mostefaoui’s say that their baby

was himself that night.“He was smiling at his daddy, drin-

king fromme, and just the happy babyhe always was,” Lettie tells.

Little did these parents know thatthis would be their very last night withtheir young son. The next morning,Lettie prepared little Kamel’s food andcalled Sekonye in. She stayed in theback room of their Deelkraal home.“My older son had a doctor’s appoint-ment that day,” Lettie tells. “Mpho tookKamel and started feeding him.”“When I left, she hadmy son comfor-

tably in her lap, and he was just fine,”Moh, who at that stage owned a garde-ning service, tells. Shortly after that,Lettie left. “I watched her put Kamel inthe walking ring, he was happy, we saidgood-bye and left.” A few hours later,at around 12:00, Moh received a ‘plea-se-call-me’ textmessage fromoneof hisgardeners at home. “I called, and theytold me that there was an ambulanceand police officers at my house,” he ex-plains sadly. He called his wife, whowas at the doctor with her eight year-old son. “I left my son at the doctor,as they were busy with tests, and rus-hed back home, because I thought mybabywas sick,” Lettie tells. “I always tryto get my children to a doctor or clinicas soon as I think or see that somethingis wrong with them.” In the interim,Moh called home. “Mpho answered, Iasked what waswrong, and all shesaid was that Ka-mel just vomited,”he explains. “Iasked to speak toa doctor or para-medic,” he says.“She just put thehandset down onthe table, but didnot call anyone tothe phone.” Mohcould hear a com-motion going onin his home, buthad no idea whathad happened.“When I walked

in, my little boyhad heart machi-nes attached tohis chest and anoxygen mask overhis face,” Lettietells. “He had ablood red markacross the side ofhis little head and

face.” She stays silent for awhile to con-tain the tears welling up in her eyes.“When I asked to just get to him, touchhim, pick him up and see if he is okay,and they told me that it was now thepolice’s scene and Iwasn’t allowednearhim, I knew my baby was dead and itwas too late.”“Themortuary cameand tookmyba-

A thick cloud of unhappiness and dis-satisfaction hangs over Welverdiend,as residents say they have had enough.The root cause of this, is the fact that

this town no longer has a fully fledgedpolice station which services it.“Our police station is closed from as

early as 16:00 some afternoons, until06:00 the following morning,” the resi-dents complain.On Tuesday, 23 July, the community

gathered at the library in Welverdiendfor a meeting regarding the current po-licing situation and to express theirconcerns. “A petition was drafted andseveral residents signed it,” said MsLietta De Beer, who is also unhappywith the situation.According to De Beer, various issues

were raised at the meeting. “People arebitterly unhappy that we do not have apolice station to go to for help at all ti-mes,” she explains. “Some people pro-tested heavily and insisted that the po-lice station starts operating as a fullyfledged station, as it did in the past, orelse a march to the cluster station inCarletonville would be arranged.”Various other complaints regarding

the station were discussed. “People

said that they would call the Carleton-ville police station for help, but thenhelp would only arrive, sometimes, upto three hours later,” De Beer told.Others complained that they had goneto the police station for urgent help,just to find locked doors.Residents say that they have never

been properly consulted regarding theclosing of their town’s police station.“Nobodyhasprovideduswith thenum-bers of the patrol vehicles which aresupposed to help us now,” they said.De Beer says that she will never stop

fighting for the betterment of her townandher communitywhich she loves. “Itis absurd to think that we have no fullyoperating police station in our entiretown, and jurisdiction for that matter,”she explains.“Our jurisdiction reaches from Wel-

verdiend, Deelkraal, Doornfontein,Khutsong Extension 5 and all the sur-rounding farms and plots.”Whilst the community members ma-

de their voices heard clearly, the possi-bility for a change in the kind of stationWelverdiend has, seems highly unlike-ly.The Carletonville Herald contacted

the Cluster Commander of the SAPS inMerafong, Brigadier Zodwa Molefe re-

garding this matter.“Welverdiend is a satelite station,

due to the fact that we do not haveenoughmanpower to run a station the-re and in Carletonville,” she explained.“There is a provincial instruction thatall satellite stations in Gauteng closebetween 18:00 and 06:00, due to at-tacks at satellite stations in the provin-ce.”Molefe also said that numbers for the

two sector vehicles, which should con-stantly be patrolling in Welverdiend,should be well publicised and madeknown to the public. “These vehiclesare constantly in the area and shouldbe made use of,” she explains. “If so-meone calls them with a complaint,they will make sure you get there asquickly as possible and will go to yourhouse, which is also really very conve-nient.”The Herald called the Carletonville

In this week’s issue the Carletonville Heraldagain reports on various issues related to go-vernment service delivery problems.In one case, taxi owners from Fochville tell

that they have to make their taxis drive inshifts because they do not have enough pas-sengers due to illegal cars transporting peo-ple. Whereas taxi and other public transportdrivers by lawneed tohavepublic driver’s per-mits, the drivers of the cars allegedly do nothave these. Despite this, they are allegedly notapprehended by traffic officers.How is it that people who has to abide by

the law lose business because authorities donot act against those who do not? The samequestion applies to other issues such as illegaltrading in areas not set out for this purpose.As in several other cases, the people experi-

encing these problems cannot do much aboutit themselves.There has, for instance, beenmany cases el-

sewhere in the country where actions of taxiassociations to stop others from taking theirpassengers turned into violence. With the cur-rent increase of other problems, such as ille-gal mining and the use and selling of drugs,the police do not have the capacity to deal withsuch issues as well.A problem possibly created by one govern-

ment section, in this case the traffic depart-ment, can thus lead to problems that anothergovernment department, the police, cannotdeal with.In the end it is often residents, who have no

power of the problems whatsoever, who haveto suffer the consequences.The community will only benefit once go-

vernment decided to attend to problems asfast as possible.

En hulle wend hulle dan nie tot ’n debat oor die

kwessie(s) nie. O, nee! Die ander word eerder aange-val en daar word etikette soos “stroom-op” om hullenekke gehang. Kan ’n mens nie dan maar ook ’n paaretikette om húlle nekke hang nie? Iets soos “ver-waand”, “egosentries”, “arrogant”?Gee my eerder “doeners”. Dis tog mense wat weet

hoe om verantwoordelikheid vir iets te vat. Mensewatnie agter titels en posisies skuil en dink dat hulle van-selfsprekend op sekere dinge geregtig is nie. “Doe-ners” kan ander inspireer. “Verwagters” laat ’n mensuiteindelik teleurgesteld enmet ’nwrang smaak in joumond.Ons dorp, inteendeel ons land, kan doen met meer

“doeners” en met minder “verwagters”. Dink net watdan alles bereik kan word! Ons kan ook doen metmense wat meer luister as wat hulle praat en veralmet minder mense wat dink dat net húlle geregtig isom iets te sê of te doen.Dan sal minder mense so driftig reageer wanneer

ander ‘n teenstrydige opinie oor iets het en dan soopenlik probeer om hulle stil te maak. Wat gee enigie-mand in elk geval die reg om te dink dat net hy ofsy groepie die reg het om ‘n opinie oor iets te hê – veralopenbare sake soos skole?Of is dit omdat jy ook “verwag” almal moet met jou

saamstem?Enopgrondwaarvannogal baseer jy hier-die verwagting?

Friends and family members of someof the people buried at Khutsong’s Restin Peace cemetery were shocked to dis-cover that several of the graves havebeen vandalised.According toMsEmily Khalipha, she

went to this graveyard to look after thegrave of her late father-in-law last Fri-day.Much to her shockKhalipha disco-vered that his gravestone, as well asthat of several other graves were knoc-ked over, some of them broken.She showed the Herald’s journalist

how her relative’s solid granite graves-tone had been damaged. Although be-ing made out of thick granite, it had se-veral chips at its base where it wasknocked from the rest of the grave.Others were however not so lucky. A

smaller gravestone near that of Khali-pha’s relative was broken into pieceswhile other heavy gravestones were al-so broken.All the gravestones had been knoc-

ked off the graves on which it wasmounted.“This is a disgrace. This man was

well-known in Khutsong because hehad a butchery here for many years.Look how his grave looks now,” Khali-pha said while she pointed at the graveof the late Mr StormBezu, who was bu-ried with his wife, Blossom. Both theirgravestones were knocked over.Khalipha could also point out the da-

maged graves of many people she hadknown from church.According to Khalipha, she had last

visited the grave of her father-in-law inJune this year. At that time there wasnothing wrong.“This is people’s work. I am sure it

was not animals which did this. Thereare no footprints and you can see that

the headstones were deliberatelypushed over,” another concerned re-sident, Reverend Solomon Mothobiof the Bantu Methodist Church inKhutsong, told the Herald.Mothobi also showed the Herald

another place where a metal framethat had been put on top on anothergrave had been pushed over.“This looks as if someone maybe

wanted to take it away,” he said andindicated that he believed the dama-ge to be the work of young peoplefrom the area addicted to the drugNyaope. It is know that these drugabusers often steal anything thatthey can to get money to buy moredrugs.More than 20 graves were dama-

ged at the time of the newspaper’s vi-sit on Monday.“I cannot believe anyone could do

this. I was so upset after I saw howthe grave had been damaged that Icould not even sleep,” Khalipha toldthe Herald.She and other residents told the

Herald that they were concernedover the fact that there were no gatesat the facility. Because of this anyonecould enter and cause havoc.“No cases have yet been opened

with us regarding such vandalism,”the Station Commander of theKhutsong Police Station, Col Marin-da Prinsloo, told the Herald.“Thematter has not been reported

to the municipality as this is newvandalism of graves in the Khutsongarea. Vandalism at the Rest In PeaceCemetery is not a newmatter,” amu-nicipal spokesman told the Heraldon Tuesday.“The gates at the cemetery were

stolen and replaced less than a yearago, only to be stolen again. Thewalls around the graveyard are pre-cast and the panels of the wall arecontinuously stolen. The municipa-lity is looking at alternative ways tosecure this grave-yardandother gra-veyards in the area, since the normalpractices does not seem to work he-re. Vandalism is however experiencedat all municipal facilities in all commu-nities. At the end of the day the cost ofvandalism is carried by all community

members.We are asking the communi-ty to report incidents of vandalism andto identify the perpetrators. If this isnot done the cost impact of this type of

criminality on the community will overthe long run increase drastically,” thespokesman added.

Vandalswreakhavoc at graveyard

Ms Emily Khalipha at the gravestone of herlate father in law, Mr Isaac Khalipha, whichwas knocked over and damaged recently.

This double headstone of a well-known former resident of Khutsong, the late Mr Storm Bezu,and his late wife, Blossom, was also completely knocked down. With it stands a concernedReverend Solomon Mothobi.

Mothibi at the grave of an unkown personwhere a metal frame covering the grave hasbeen pushed over, as if someone wanted tocome back to remove it.

This gavestone had been damaged in a man-ner which which does not look like it was do-ne by a cow.

This home made gravestone was completelybroken by the unscrupulous vandals.

haar lewe om so om te sien na die kleuters.Om die dag spesiaal te maak het die Assistent Bestuurder Carin,die Day Care vir hulle opgevrolik met versierings en eet en drink-goed. Die trotse Area Bestuurder Nicolaas en Winkel Bestuurder

Martinus was ook daar om die feesviering te geniet.

Twee jarelange lede vandieCarletonvil-le-brandweer het nie net bekende ge-sigte geword nie, maar het ook baie in-teressante staaltjies om te vertel.

Mnre. Gert Jordaan en Sam Menoehet onlangs onderskeidelik medaljesvir 40 jaar en 30 jaar diens gekry.

Jordaan het al 43 jaar diens by dieCarletonville-brandweer. Hy is een vannet 14 mense in die diens, landwyd,wat nog ooit hierdie toekenning ont-vang het, en ook die enigste persoonwat steeds, na 40 jaar, in diens van diebrandweer is.

“My lewe het by die brandweer be-gin,” vertel Jordaan. “My pa was in diebrandweer in Johannesburg, Krugers-dorp en Roodepoort.” Jordaan het in1970 by die brandweer aangesluit inCarletonville, en dit is waar mens homsteeds sal kry as jy na hom soek. “Ekgee steeds vir mnr. Marx grys hare,” lagJordaan. André Marx is die brand-weer-hoof op Carletonville.

Jordaan het in die apartheid-era be-gin werk, toe die ambulans en brand-weer-dienste nog een afdeling was endaar nog blanke en nie-blanke ambu-lanse was. “Op party skofte het net eenpersoon in ‘n aand op die ambulans ge-werk,” vertel hy. Jordaankykna sy hoof, AndrèMarx,en sê: “Ek wil vir hom dankie sê dat hyal my nonsens altyd opgevreet het.”Wanneer Jordaan gevra word wanneerhy gaan aftree, is sy antwoord “Wan-neer mnr. Marx my uitskop.”Goeie dissipline“Ek het saam die wit ‘laaities’ op die

plaas grootgeword.” So vertel mnr.Sam Menoe sy verhaal oor hoe hy syloopbaan by die brandweer begin het.

“Ek het gegaan vir my onderhoud,”lag hy. “Die eerste ding wat hulle voormy neergesit het, was ‘n Beeld-koe-rant.” Menoe moes die Beeld lees endan vertel wat hy sopas gelees het. “Ekhet dit gedoen, hulle het my so ’n paar

minute uitgestuur, teruggeroep en gesêdat ekdiewerk gekry het.”Hy vertel dathulle niemand sou aanstel in daardiedae, wat nie Afrikaans kon praat nie.Hy het gelukkig nie net op die plaasgrootgeword nie, maar was ook ‘n top-student in sy Afrikaans klas enhet selfsparty maal Afrikaanse-klas gegee.

Menoewas voorheen ‘nMerafong-po-lisieman. “Die misdadigers was bangvir ons,” vertel hy. “Hulle het polisie toegehardloop as hulle geweet het onssoek hulle.”

Menoe sê dat hy nooit in sy lewe eensverwag het om offissier te word in diebrandweer nie. “Ek het by die ambu-lanse begin, en dit was ‘n feit dat geenswart man bevordering sou kry nie,”verduidelik hy. “Maar toe mnr. Marx in1995 hier begin het, het dinge beginverander.”

Die hoogtepunt van Menoe se brand-

weer-loopbaan, was die fiksheid en 21km-maraton wat hulle elke jaar moeshardloop.

Sy onaangenaamste herinneringedraai om die feit dat daar blanke maarnie nie-blanke ambulanse was daardietyd nie. “As ‘n blanke paramedikus ofambulans-bestuurder op ‘n siek of be-seerde swartmens afgekom het, maghulle glad nie aan hom/haar geraak hetnie.

Ons het ook glad nie handskoene opons swart ambulanse gehad nie.” Me-noe vertel dat hy, op sy eerste dag bydie werk, 1 Januarie 1983, ‘n baba indie ambulansmoes vang, sonder hand-skoene.

Menoe is duidelik iemand wat vandissipline hou. “Met dissipline, kanmens ‘n lang pad stap,” vertel hy. “Mensmoet ook altyd respek hê vir jou ge-meenskap, jou kollegas en jou bestuur-

der/baas.”Marx vertel dat almal gepraat het van

Menoe toe die lang-diensmedaljes oor-handig is. “Almal het opgestap en hulmedaljes gaan haal,” vertel Marx. “Toedit Sam se beurt is, het hy gedissipli-neerd, soos daar altydmet driloefeninggedoen is, opmarsjeer.” Die mense hetglo met knoppe in die keel gesit.

“Ek hoop dat ek eendag, op sy ouder-dom, steeds so op en wakker en fikssoos hy kan wees,” vertel Marx. “Hyneem steeds deel aan alles wat diebrandweer-manne aanpak.

“Ek is baie trots op my twee lede,”vertel Marx. “Ek kan altyd staatmaakop hierdie twee mans. As ek nie aandiens is nie, en ek weet dat hulle daaris, kan ek met ‘n geruste gemoed doenwat ek wil, maar weet dat dinge by diestasie aanhou loop en hulle dinge on-der beheer het.”

Nog vuur en vlamna jare sediens

Inwoners van Welverdiend is hoogsontstoke omdat ‘n stroom riool uit ‘nmangat naby huise lek en opdam.

Volgens mnr. John Venton, wat in26ste Laan aan die kant van Welver-diend woon, sukkel hy al vir ‘n geruimetyd met riool wat uit ‘n mangat op diesypaadjie naby sy huis stroom.

Soveel van dié riool het onlangs uit-gevloei dat ‘n groot poel stinkende rioolteen verlede Vrydag in die veld netskuins oorkant sy huis te sien was. Metdie Herald se besoek aan die toneel ver-lede week het dit gelyk of van die rioolsteeds aan dieoorkant van Ven-ton se huis uit-vloei.

“Dit is al om-trend drie maan-de wat die riool sóopstoot,” het Ven-ton aan die Heraldvertel.

Hy het ook ge-wys dat, hoeweldie mangat aandieselfde kant vandie pad as sy huisnie met die Heraldse besoek uitge-vloei het nie, diemangat steedsoop en die rioolbaie naby aan die oppervlak was.

Verdroogde oorblyfsels van toiletpa-pier en kondome, wat rondom diémangat sowel as in die pad gesien konword, was egter tekens dat riool vroeërby dié gat uitgestroom het.

Volgens Venton is ernstige rioollekkereeds vir jare ‘n probleem in die area

waar hy bly. “Die munisipaliteit moesal voorheen my matte kom vervang nadie riool tot in my huis opgestoot het,”vertel Venton, en voeg by dat hy bangis dat die probleem dalk weer só ergkan raak.

Intussen dryf die stank van die lek-kende riool Venton en ander inwonersbykans teen die mure uit.

Volgens ‘n eiendomsagent van Wel-verdiend, me. Lieta de Beer, kan die ri-ool blokke ver geruik word.

“Dis vir my lekker om in die oggenddie eerste ding my vensters oop temaak. Nou vang die reuk jou wanneerjy dit doen. ‘n Mens kan deesdae nie

meer leef sonderom die hele tydlugverfrisser temoet spuit nie,”het De Beer aandie Herald vertel.

De Beer beweerook dat dit as ge-volg van problemesoos die rioollek,moeilik is om hui-se op Welverdiendte verkoop.

“’n Mens kannie die mense watwil koop, misleien sê dat alles hierreg is nie. Daar saleers dringend ‘nplan met die pro-

bleme gemaak moet word,” sê sy.“Die probleem is eers vanoggend by

die bestuurder van ons water en sanita-sie-afdeling aangemeld. Daar is geenrekord dat ons voorheen daarvan inkennis gestel is nie,” het ‘n munisipalewoordvoerder Dinsdag by navraag oordie lekkende riool reageer.

Taxi owners in the Fochville area are upin arms because of what they say areunfair competition by people whotransport passengers illegally.

“Our problems started about two ye-ars ago with two or three cars pickingup passengers. Now there are morethan 20 of them,” the Chairman of theFochville Taxi Association, Mr Jan Le-sufi, told the Herald this week.

According to Lesufi and other taxiowners more and more people are ma-king a living out of transporting peoplein their own cars in the Fochville area.

“Sometimes it even looks as if thesepeople buy new cars just to transportpassengers,” another member of theassociation, Mr Johannes Tamle, toldthe Herald.

According to the taxi owners they ha-ve set out routes which have been ap-proved by government. All peopletransporting passengers for moneymust, according to law, also have pu-blic driver’s permits (PDP’s). Althoughit is sometimes easier for commutersto seek for lifts in cars because they canbe picked up closer than at the officialtaxi ranks, deciding not to use a legaltaxi can lead to other problems.

“People who ride on our taxis are co-vered if they should end up in an acci-dent because we have official operatinglicences. If they ride with someone whois not registered, they will receive no as-sistance in such a case. They also donot know whether the driver pickingthem up is safe to go with or not. At theTaxi Association, we keep control overall our drivers,” Lesufi told the Herald.

“The situation is unfair because Go-vernment forced us to spend a lot ofmoney to buy new taxis. We must alsogo through a lot of trouble to keep tothe law while these people can do whatthey want,” Lesufi told the Herald. Ap-parently it is easy to spot the places inFochville where the cars are loading pe-ople to transport them for money.

“If everyone else can see them, why

can the Traffic Department not do any-thing,” Lesufi wondered.

As a result of this loss in clients,members of the association recentlyhad to make a different plan to keeptheir business viable. From about aweek and a half ago, all taxis of the as-sociation have been marked with eitherred or yellow stickers. The associationhave now organised a schedule accor-ding to which the taxis marked in eachcolour only drive on alternative days.Because there are now fewer taxis wai-ting to pick up passengers, the ones onduty at a specific day can fill up fasterso that commuters are not held up.

“Before we implemented this plan itsometimes took almost a whole day for

the taxis to fill up so that they couldstart driving. Although our new systemmight pose some problems for passen-gers, we ask them to understand andbe patient,” says Lesufi.

“A this stage we are hoping that thepolice and traffic department can helpus sort this problem out,” Lesufi ad-ded.

“The members of Fochville Taxi As-sociation are requested to make an ap-pointment with the Manager Public Sa-fety and Security to discuss the matter.It would be highly unlikely that trafficofficers or police officers will stop pri-vate vehicles to see if the passengersare paying passengers or private pas-sengers. Private arrangements be-

tween individuals such as lift clubs isalso not an offence. However if infor-mation is provided by the Taxi Associa-tion about commercial transport of pe-ople without the necessary licenses,such actions can be monitored,” a spo-kesman of the Merafong City Local mu-nicipality told the Herald on Tuesday.

The Station Commissioner of theFochville Police Station, Col HennieMaass, indicated that although such of-fences fall under the Road Traffic Actand are, because of this, actually theresponsibility of traffic officers, he hasagreed to a meeting with the taxi associ-ation and traffic officers over the pro-blems. The meeting was scheduled totake place on Wednesday, 31 July.

Residents staying across from theKhutsong Roman Catholic Church arestill up in arms over the church’s alle-gedly illegally erected palisade fence.The Herald reported in May 2012

that the Merafong City Local Municipa-lity took the unusual step of orderingthis church to remove the palisade fen-ce that it had erected.The municipality decided to do this

after members of the community com-plained that the fence not only barredoff a public area that they previouslyused, but also made it difficult to movearound in the street.Representatives of the Cushan

Church and the Good Shephard Apos-tolic Church in Zion, which are situa-ted in the same block as the CatholicChurch, also indicated that they werenot consulted in the decision and thatthe Catholic Church had in fact alsofenced off some of their property.Although residents and other chur-

ches had asked the Catholic Church togive them access to the park througha gate, this gate was later closed.At the time, the municipality’s politi-

cal spokesman, Mr Slums Magodielo,told the Herald that the church hadbeen given time until 8 May 2012 to re-move the fence, otherwise legal stepsmight be taken against it.“It is now more than a year later but

the municipality has still done no-thing,” a resident living across from thechurch, Ms Emily Khalipha, told theHerald.According to Khalipha, the fence still

poses many problems to the peoplestaying in the street across from it. Asthis street is very narrow, visitors to ho-

mes in the area cannot park in it wit-hout obstructing the traffic flow. Thefence was also built so close to thestreet that there is no sidewalk spacefor visitors to park on or for vehiclesto turn on. Although children from thearea previously played in the park, theyhave had nowhere to go since the fencehad been erected.

“We are very unhappy because thereis no other park in this area where ourchildren can play, another resident,Mrs Sarah Mothobi, told the Herald.Residents also indicated that the si-

tuation is worsened by the fact thatma-ny minibus-taxi’s have started to usetheir street as an alternative road toavoid speedhumps in other areas. This

makes it evenmore dangerous for theirchildren.“I don’t feel right about this. The

children used to play soccer aroundhere.Now theyhavenowhere to go,” ad-ded another neighbour, Mr Papi Ma-buya.“Wedonot knowwhat to do.They say

we complain too much but no-oneknows what we have to endure,” saysKhalipha.“A notice was issued to the Church.

Correspondence followed and themat-ter is still receiving attention,” was theonly answer the Herald received froma municipal spokesman when enqui-ring about the problems thisweek.

Church fenceheadache still not solved

As a result of the fence there is very little room for residents to move in the adja-cent narrow street.

OnMandela Day pupils of Tsitsiboga Primary School in Khutsong got a pleasant surpri-se when a group of young people linked to the non-profit organisation City Year SouthAfrica, started a year-long public service programme at the school. During the nextyear, the young people involved in this programme will assist the pupils through anafter-school programme and engagewith residents about issues affecting the childrenand their communities. Here the volunteers showed off their discipline through syn-chronised exercises to the youngsters and their teachers.

On Mandela Day the Carletonville Police’s Women's Network provided soup to thechildren at Rotara School as well as the elderly from Rotalia.

The Merafong City Local Municipalityhas decided to roll up their sleeves aspart of the Mandela Day celebrations.

According to the municipality’s poli-tical spokesman, Mr Slums Magodielo,the municipality tackled various activi-ties after it decided that the whole ofJuly would be a ‘month for Mandela’.

“As the municipality we decided to allunite for Madiba. This sense of toge-therness and belonging is one of themany legacies of our father Madiba anddemonstrated that South Africa is trulya rainbow nation united in its diversity,as well as a demonstration of the lea-dership qualities of our icon,” Magodie-lo added.

The activities were kicked off withspecial prayer days at various venuesthroughout the municipal area on 4 Ju-ly. During these events, members of the

community received the opportunity towrite down their best wishes to Madibaon special posters. These were taken tothe hospital in Pretoria where he is be-ing treated. As the theme for Mandelamonth is “Take Action, Inspire Change.Make Every Day a Mandela Day”, witha focus on food security, shelter and li-teracy, the municipality also decided toamongst other things, assist the De-partment of Education by various ser-vices at schools in the area on MandelaDay. Simple acts of kindness such aspainting classrooms, cleaning, dona-ting food parcels and blankets, visitingan old age home as well as centers forthe physically challenged and child he-aded families were also done duringthe day. The Merafong City Local Muni-cipality invited other government de-partments to join their activities andwas also assisted by Anglo Gold Ashan-ti.

As part of the activities related to Mandela month, municipal officials took posters withmessages wishing Mediba well to the hospital in Pretoria where he is being treated.

On Mande-la Day, offi-cials andpoliticians,amongstotherthings, joi-ned em-ployees ofAnglo GoldAshanti inrenovatingthe UbuntuCentre forthe rehabi-litation ofstreetchildren inKokosi.

Although it does not fall in the municipal area, the Merafong City Local Municipality decidedto help the Bokamoso Primary Farm School at Rysmierbult as part of its Mandela Day activi-ties. As part of the action, a municipal water tanker was used to supply water to the school,a luxury that the children did not have previously.

A variety of other work, such as painting the school's roof, were also done by Merafong'sofficials and politicians at Bokamoso Primary Farm School.

According to ADT Security, domesticworkers employed in homes with secu-rity systems have in some cases beenfound to be reluctant to press the panicbutton in a situation in which they feelunsafe. The reason being, they worried

that their employer will have to pay forthe armed response call-out if it’s a fal-se alarm.

Clive Humphrey, Managing Directorof ADT Central Region says, “I encoura-ge residents to speak to their domesticstaff about the importance of pressingthe panic button. They need to feel con-fident that help is available should theyneed it. It would be good to highlightthat a certain number of call outs arefree every month so they can feel rest

assured.”.Humphrey highlights different meas-

ures that domestic workers and garde-ners can take to feel safer while theyon duty.

-Domestic workers or gardenerswhose employers subscribe to ADT can

request the ‘Meet-and-Greet’ service.For a patrol vehicle to meet them at

the gate and escort them safely ontothe premises when they arrive at work.The service is dependent on activity le-vels in the area, as emergency signalstake priority.

-Exchange cell phone numbers withother domestic workers nearby so thatyou can alert each other of suspiciouspeople or vehicles.

-Never let strangers into the house orlet them know that you alone.

Humphrey says that there are a fewways in which to check that ADT Ar-med Response Officers (AROs) are le-gal officers. “Our AROs carry twocards, one is a branded ID card withtheir name, PSIRA number and a pho-

tograph and the other is a PSIRA cardwhich has their photograph.

You can ask to see these cards, asthis will prove they are authentic andnot criminals. Uniform are also an im-portant indicator, bona fide ADT offi-cers have official epilates on theirshoulders and wear a bullet proofvest.”

He offers the following advice for ho-meowners:

-Talk about security and safety issu-es with your domestic worker/garde-ner.

-Teach them how to arm and disarmthe alarm.

-Have a safe room that can be usedin an emergency, equipped with a doorthat can be locked from the inside,a te-lephone and a panic button.

-Enrol your domestic staff in the lo-cal crime-prevention forums which

take place in most neighbourhoodsevery month. Arranged by the police ora community member.

look at their ambitions in life and if you don’t haveany, well it’s time you stand up and look at thestars, they want victory in every walk of their life.

Ambition is an earnest desire for some type ofachievement or distinction and the willingness tostrive for its attainment yet “it’s priceless”.

You see people with ambition align their choi-ces, visions with their will power over and abovetheir circumstances.

They make it work regardless of the rain andthunders that shadow their world with challeng-

es.They know that they have to perse-

vere and push towards their destina-tion as the current darkness is justtemporary.

It’s that beast within you that hun-gers for success more than anything,ithungers for honour and fame as the di-rect translation states.

But, does this success have to beabout the honour or fame, I want all thevictors to understand the second partof the title that states it’s priceless.

Your ambition shouldn’t be alignedto the worldly honour and fame be-cause I believe those are just bonuses.

The Career Expo, held for all the ma-tric learners from various differenthigh schools in Merafong on Thursday,July 26, was a great success, with exhi-bitors fromgovernmental departmentsas well as the private sector and ofcourse AngloGold Ashanti.

Learners were free to ask questionsand collect information brochures andbursary application forms and the likefrom the many exhibitors.

The Herald interviewed two girlsfrom the Letsasing Combined School.“This expo changed my life,” said No-lundi Ndwandwa. “I have always beeninterested in military health, but wasnever able to find the information I nee-ded, until today.”

Ndwandwa says that someone fromthe Defence Force, who also had an ex-hibit, gave her all the requirements andfurnished her with all the necessarynumbers and contact details to succes-sfully enrol and apply.

“I really almost gaveuponmydream,because I was battling, and all I wantto be is an animal doctor for the milita-ry,” she tells.

“I am so grateful that Anglo hostedthis event for us.”

Ndwandwa’s classmate, Mittah Zun-gu said that the expowas a great experi-ence.

“I got information here that I wouldnot have been able to access any otherway,” she explained.

“I gained a lot of knowledge and Iknow that I want to be a geologist.”

As I recently sat in a taxi waiting to gohome I saw something strange.I could not believe my eyes! Two

men were standing chatting next tothe taxi, the next minute, one of themtook out something fromhis shoe andwhen I looked closer, it was a smallplastic bag.The older man opened it and the

other one leaned on him. The youngerman had something that looked likea straw and inhaled what was in theplastic bag.I felt ashamed, my mind raced and

I had so many questions.Why aren’t they ashamed? Have we

as a society accepted that drugs arepart of our lives? Why didn’t they hideor go to some alley?My eyes couldn’t move away from

them. The woman sitting next to mesaid “this is our reality” as if it wasnormal. I did not know how to react.

I kept looking at them, thinking theymight feel ashamed but they continu-ed chatting like nothing was wrongand the longerwe sat there, the longer,I watch the whole event happening.Other youngmenwere later coming

to themand themore I looked themo-re I saw that they were selling drugsas well.Their handshake was their way to

exchang the money for the drugs. Al-though I wanted to take a picture, Ijust could not and felt afraid.I also felt helpless. Why were every-

one around themso relaxed andactedlike nothing wrong was happening?To this day I still wish I had the cou-

rage to take the picture but they wereright beside the window where I wassitting.I was afraid that they might see me

take the picture and I did not want totake any chances.

I was more surprised in the waythey carried on and without a care inthe world.My eyes followed their every move

around the taxi rank. I was amazed athow free they were and that nobodyseemed to mind.These drug that they were using,

Nyaope, is really dangerous and itseems like the number of peopleusing it is just increasing inMerafong.How do we as community solve this

The annual SAMSA (South AfricanMining Sports Association) rugby tour-namentwas held atOliënpark in Potch-efstroom this past weekend where lo-cal mining teams showed their steel.This tournament was attended by

many mines who are affiliated withSAMSA, and consist of gold and plati-num mines.Various mines sent representatives

to the event. The teams that took partin the tournament were Lonmin,NorthernPlatinum,Tumela, VaalRiver,Harmony, KloofMine (Sibanye), Aman-do Bult, DrieFontein, West Wits,Rustenburg Platinum Mine (RPM) andBeatrix. The tournament consisted offour pools where each team competedin a round- a- bout. Goldfields West Golf Club held theirannual Boertjies, Souties and Porrasgolf day on July 20, where the Porrastook the crown in this Tri-nation localgolf tournament.It has been a huge success on and off

the course and the 132 players all en-joyed the day immensely. The spirit atGoldfields, on and off the course onceagain proved that Goldfields West GolfClub is a club to be reckoned with.The club would like to thank the

Boertjies captain, Noeks Bezuiden-houd, the Souties Captain, John vonRuben, and the Porras captain, JosèAguiai for their organisation. The sixwhole was sponsored by Good SpotCafè and their support regarding therefreshments by Liquor City.This was the first year since 2007

On the 18th of July 2013 Good Sports Café Situated at the village club inWestern Deep Levels sponsored a celebration gathering, for all thesurrounding departments of Anglo Gold Ashanti West Wits. Though itwas not a big event, there was a numerous attendees that representedtheir departments in celebration the 95 years of our former president,Mr. Nelson Mandela. It was a fun time with lots of Snacks, Cakes andof course Champagne, and topped with a release of 95 balloons in ournationalflag colours at 15h00.We would like to thank all the department in the event. The fair Barnard lady, Liezel Barnardloves to spin dust in her competitorsfaces on her mean Can AM 1000 Rene-gade.

TeamSouth Africa was off to Namibiaon June 7 where they competed againstseven other African Counties.

Local Rider Liezel Barnard joined theteamandhadahectic route to complete.The route consisted of 90% rocks, 6%thick sand and high dunes and 4% riverbeds.

The SA ladies team managed to getfirst place in front of Namibia on thisvery tough competition.

After a week of rest at home it was of

to Botswana to compete in the ToyotaDesert 1000 which was also the SouthAfrican National rides.

Here the riders had to ride to scorepoints for the South African NationalChallenge, and day 1 - June 20, startedat 8 am. After a day of very hard racing,Liezelmanaged todo250kilometres forthe day and ended with a first place inthe Ladies Team, a fourth Place in theSilver Class, second Place in the SORC(Southern Off Road Championship) B3and first place in the SORC Senior.

After a well deserved night of sleep,day two started a bit earlier at 7 am. Itpromised tobeavery coldandmistyday

It was hard to see through the dustandmist Liezl’ hands were in pain from

the cold.Liezel finished a total distance of 375

kilometres on day two and ended thirdin the Ladies category, third in the SilverClass, fifth SORC B3 and first in theSORC (Southern Off Road Champion-ship) Senior Class.

After this event local rider Liezel(Barnard Vervoer Racing) is stillleading the South African LadiesClass for 2013.

Her next venture will be held inVryheid on July 20 and is knownas the BELL 400.

Liezel spent over 22 weekends

away per year for races and travellinglong distances.

She has two races left in the nationalswhichwill be at Rysmierbult and inVen-tersdorp on October 5.

At this stage she is the leading lady inthe Ladies class, but will have to win atleast one of the two races to finish firstoverall. Liezl will also be riding in theSilverChallenge,which is for new ridersin the National Series. There are 12 rid-ers in this category and she is lying insecond place. All the other entries aremen. “Believemewhen I tell you that thewinning guy is still under 18 and is rid-ing in the Junior class as well.” saysLeizel.

She is quite happy with where she isat the moment, as she only started rid-ing bike in2011andcouldn’t even finishone lap in February that year. Almostthree years later she is riding with thebest lady riders in the country.

“ I’m proud of myself, but most of all,I’ll keep on enjoying everymoment on my Quad.”Liezel replied happily.
