MANUEL CAEIRO - WELCOME TO MY LOFTManuel Caeiro’s Lost Forms, David Barro Like many contemporary painters, Manuel Caeiro questions painting starting from the repetition of forms. Each line insists on the achieving of an idea, and its multiplication, its sequence, generates the definitive rhythm. Manuel Caeiro works the modular detail as that which unleashes each new image, and he always does it starting from memory or recall of what is constructed, seeking a new order. Thus his strategy is that of unfolding or propagating a reality that is reconstructed and therefore fictitious, which is born out of the most traditional of mediums – painting – to the one that possesses the most historical charge and which at the same time to all appearances processes a weaker contemporary condition or at least one that is more questioned, with its mental state being a continuous reason for debate.Barry Schwabesky stated: “From its Modernist and Conceptual past, contemporary painting retains the belief that each artist’s work should take a stance, that a painting is not only a painting but also the representation of an idea about painting”. Therefore our first question ought to be: What is the idea that drives Manuel Caeiro to carry on painting? The easy thing to do would be to ask him, but I consider it to be more opportune to digress on his possible intentions than to uncover the direct secret of his trompe l’oeil. First of all one should further qualify the question of what we call painting. Because very often the only thing that is left of it and its origins is the term. Today painting is more than ever an attitude. As Thierry de Duve pointed out, painting is no longer a technique, but a tradition. An idea or a manner of thinking, certainly about painting itself in its possibility of apprehending the world. Having overcome the domination of “self-referentiality”, of the “essence”, and after the continuous sounding-out of painting as a category, of the feeling that for years we have been witnessing different continuations in relation to an inherited medium. Since a few years ago there have been no tendencies, nor solid groups outside strategies that time will weaken. We are simply witnessing the dejà vu of a series of deaths and resurrections. Because, apparently, everything can be painting. Being particularly tired of the

tradition of the new, I am assuming painting as a phenomenon of the gaze that might be extended as an installation, which is often impenetrable and always simulated, the video-projection, which may be read as our personal painting of history, or anything else that the artist defines as painting.

CATARINA CAMPINO, Spanish Kiss 2000video (Portugal 2000; MiniDV; PAL; 5:4; colour; stereo; 3’01’’)ed. of 3+2 a.pmusic: Rumba Gitana by Quisada, performed by Eugenio de Badajoz, from the LP Bailes Flamencos (Marfer), played at an accelerated speed rate

If one places two matches vertically with heads leaning together on top of a box of matches and sets the body of one of the matches on fire, it carries through a levitation movement, while the flame spreads and consumes both matches. Spanish Kiss approaches this simple trick of the same name, to make the portrait of an impetuous kiss. The circular movement of the box of matches and the sound of a flamenco tune in sped up rotation transform the scene into a stunning choreography and strengthen the ecstatic atmosphere.Once extinct the inflamed kiss, nothing remains but the carbonised bodies of the two lovers. What still binds them together? The camera zooms in, trying to discern its faces, which are nothing but coarse bits of coal.Spanish Kiss was conceived in the scope of the exhibition ”Emergências”curated by Patrícia Guerreiro and organized by Clube Português de Artes e Ideias, which took place at Lugar Comum, Fábrica da Pólvora, Tercenas, Portugal, between January 29th and February 13th 2000.

MÓNICA CAPUCHO, S/ título, 2007Oil on MDF, 30 x 50 cm

Mónica Capucho’s working process uses the grid as an instrument ans method. Each painting is made up of a considerable number of layers of paint, which are successively hidden through masks and painted over. When one takes out of these masks, which ends up taking on the form of a grid, the surface obtained maintains the signs of that activity of hiding, at the same time as showing us suble contrasts between the shiny and the opaque, light nd dark, colours and non-colours. There is a

thickness in these paintings that is an indication of time: time of painting, of drying, of sedimentation. Each painting demands a straighforward reading and an in-deph reading, given that it is constructed as a stratigraphic of painting itself. Micron 005Performance

“I used the studio table as the starting point for a spatially specific video/drawing relationship with the audience. The whole installation was formally structured around a long table with a participant at either end of the table drawing directly on the lens of a video camera, and their image projected onto an adjacent wall, establishing a situation where the role of the viewer and the role of the author were crossed. The performance consists of the following: in a large (12m x 10m x 4m) darkened hall, there is a long, thin table (5.4m long and 60cm wide). I sit at one end of the table, and members of the audience are invited to take turns sitting at the other end of the table, with a small spotlight aimed at both parties. In front of each of us is a digital camera turned towards the seated party, a small pen (micron 005), and fluid and paper for cleaning the camera lens. The cameras are attached to video projectors, which are mounted underneath the table, and project the images from both cameras side by side, with a small overlapping area, onto an adjacent wall to the size of 4.4 m x 3m. We both draw directly on the lenses of the cameras, with the images projected onto the adjacent wall.

ALEXANDRA DO CARMO, Micron 005, 2004Performance, 1 hour. Project at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn 2002 and Lugar Comum, Barcarena, Portugal 2004.

ALEXANDRA DO CARMO

As the camera is aimed toward each person’s face, the lens drawing appears on top of the person’s face, the drawing is amplified by the projection. It is through the projection that the parties become connected; as their drawings overlap by one meter, one can interfere with the projected space of the other. The participants can see the ongoing results of their drawing through the camera’s small viewing screen, which is turned towards the participant. The camera is permanently on auto-focus. Each participating audience member can stay at the table for as long as they want. On the table there are information and one instruction for the participants which is : 1. please erase the drawing before you leave the table. The length of the table prevents verbal communication. The distance between myself and the participant is emphasized by the long and narrow dimensions of the table, which is related with the traditional scenario of the intimate moment of a couple at the dinner table. The communication, therefore, is created through the visual elements of the projection. The duration of the performance is one hour.”

Microsoft art collection, Seattle, the Musée d’art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Musée d’Art Moderne, Straßbourg, the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Antwerp, the Pfizer Inc., New York, the DaimlerChrysler collection, Berlin, the Helga de Alvear collection, Madrid and the von Habsburg Foundation, Salzburg. As modern art painting, Roland Fischer explores the elements of color, rhythm, composition and form as abstract possibilities of reality, placed not only throught the image of building façade but also using the human face as a subject. In his series Camino and New Architectures Roland Fischer performes a technical approach portraiting the formal elements of architecture simultaneously from many perspectives which are placed in different frames in order to bring out the subject’s essence. A delicate disturbing composition of lines, textures rhytms, is presented placed into a two-dimensional image developing a new stylistic vocabulary. One can speak of this compositions in terms of how they simultaneously attempt to show many elements as an abstract fragment, encouraging a kind of reverie in the viewer. In addition, forms are rigidly geometric and compositions subtle and intricate. Fragile intimate lines are expanded in a deep and complex repertoire assuming figurative traces or more abstract lines. In his series Façades he crops the external surfaces from contemporary architectural buildings, neutralising the surrounding reality and impression of depth by putting together on a two dimension surface, constructive and ornamental elements of the building façade so the result can be a pure plastic and abstract surface fragment.

In Chinese Portraits Roland Fischer places the portrayed persons in a simple background as a waterpool in order to isolate and concentrate the face so that the complexity of the human face can arise.
