Dear John

By: Nicholas Sparks

I think the author's purpose was that he was trying to give me

facts, and entertain people with a romantic, but sad book.

Nicholas Sparks, the author was informing the readers about a

story that was very realistic, and how people can fall in love with

someone. He was telling the readers, and giving facts of how

a young man who had no mother, and not a good

relationship with his father went off to war and came back and fell in love with a girl; who was very

close to her family and was always the perfect daughter. The book was giving facts that could

be a real life situation about young couples falling in love.

Author's Purpose Word Tease

John Tyree is a young 19 year old who doesn't know what to do with his life

after high school, so he signs up for the army. He has no mom, and describes

his dad as 'socially awkward'. Savannah is a college student at the University of

North Carolina, and is visiting Wilmington Carolina, (where john

lives)b to help rebuild houses for the hurricane victims with a couple of her

college friends. John and Savannah meet each other on the beach one day,

and knew they were meant for each other. It only took two weeks for them

to find out, and then John had to go back to Germany because his leave was up. They both agreed to write to each other while he was away. With John

coming back and forth from Germany, and him being gone sometimes for more than a year, they begin to slowly become distant from each other. Will they stay together? Read and you will find out!

The theme throughout the book is that love cannot last through everything. John and Savannah are both in love

with each other, but with John always away, Savannah falls in love with

someone else. When John and Savannah meet it was love at first site. They were always happy together, but

when they were apart it made them grow farther apart then they ever

thought it would. Savannah thought that she could handle being away from

John for a year at a time, but deep down knew she couldn't. They both

loved each other more than anything, but it was too much for her. She

wanted someone that would always be there for her, and for some reason that

could never be John because he was always away. John had been gone for

more than two years, and she began to fall in love with someone else. I picked this as the theme of the book because it is shown throughout the novel that

no matter what you can do, love doesn't always last everything.
