Die wenner van die jaarlikse Carle-tonville Idols-sangkompetisie is ver-lede Vrydagaand in snerpende kouetydens die Carletonville Lenteskougekies.

Volgens die kompetisie se organi-seerder, Leon van Jaarsveld, het san-gers van sover as Klerksdorp en Ma-kwassie ook aan vanjaar se Idolsdeelgeneem. ‘n Deelnemer van Carle-tonville, Twanette Steyn, het egtermet haar weergawe van Miley Cyrusse liedjie “Wrecking ball” met diewenplek weggestap. Sy het ook methaar wenplek ‘n prys van R8 000 in-gepalm.

Dit was die eerste keer in die 14jaar wat die kompetisie bestaan, datsó ‘n groot prys op die spel was.

The police managed to track downthree suspects, Moihli Ramasimona(31), Hosia Fanie (54), Simon Khes-wa (32). They were all charged withmurder and kidnapping. All threemen appeared in the MagistratesCourt in Fochville on 18 August andonly two suspects received R5 000bail each. Ramasimona did not recei-ve bail because he didn’t have properidentification documents.

“They told me that they would be co-ming back for you and as they left theysaid they were going to finish off Tiger,”the wife told.

Although Ramolondo followed up in-formation that Alex gave him the day af-ter the incident, and he also obtainedinformation about where Tiger may ha-ve been, there was not much hope thathe would be found alive.

Although Ramolondo and a collea-gue went to search for Tiger at the villa-ge, they only found his burnt body withhis hands still tied behind his back.

On Saturday 30 August 2014 two 16-year-olds faced the samehorrible ordeal.

During the first incident, a girl from Greenspark and herfriend were on their way home from a nearby store when twomen approached and grabbed them.

The friend however managed to run away.They dragged the girl to an open field near a stadium and

raped her beforefleeing the scene.

The second inci-dent took placearound 21:30 inKokosi Extention5 when anotherteenage girl waswalking homefrom a friend’sparty.

As she passedthe taxi rank, twomen grabbed herand took her to anearby veld whereshe was raped.

The victim fromKokosi was able toidentify one sus-pect.

According to thepolice in Fochville,who is investiga-ting the cases, theywould soon makean arrest in thiscase.

A beloved father drowned in the Won-derfonteinspuit during the past week.

According to Constable Zonke Dyos-ini, a Mr Mavuso (70) has been livingnear the Wonderfonteinspruit in histent for some time.

Dyosini says that she noticed thatthere was a tent near the Wonderfon-teinspruit on 21 August. She went to in-vestigate, found Mavuso at the site andasked him why was he staying in thatarea. She also warned him that it mightbe dangerous as he his old.

Mavuso told Dyosini that he was fis-hing in the Wonderfonteinspruit so thathe could earn some money as the pen-sion he receives is not enough.

Dyosini says that she asked Mavusoto evacuate the area, but that he askedto be given time until 9 September,when he has received his pension andcan hire a bakkie to move his four boatsand all his other items.

On Friday Morning one of Mr Mavusochildren went to visit his father as henormally does. Upon arrivel, however,he saw his father’s dog staring at theriver and one of his father’s boat floa-

ting in the middle of the river. Althoughhe began searching for his father, hecould not find him. He called the policeand a police captain who was on dutywent to the scene. Police divers and thesniffer dogs were also called to the sce-ne to assit find Mr Mavuso. His wasfound on Friday 30 August around12:50 and was declared dead on thescene.

Let us encourage each other to readand build a society that is inquisitiveand eager to find solutions. It’s not so

Rumours were rife again this weekabout strange occurrences at the Mera-fong City Local Municipality and that itscontroversial acting municipal mana-ger might be on his way out.

Speculation started on 12 August.when several sources within the muni-cipality told the Herald that on this day,an official letter was faxed to the muni-cipality by the Department of Coopera-tive Governance and Traditional Affairs(COGTA) to indicate that Seitisho’s pe-riod of acting within the municipalitywill come to an end at the end of August.

Seitisho has been a controversial fi-gure since he arrived in Merafong in2012. It came to light that there wereserious allegations of mismanagementat both the previous municipalitieswhere he was employed - the Westona-ria and the Plettenberg Bay municipali-ties. While Seitisho held the reigns inMerafong, various problems again ca-me to light.

In June documents came into the He-rald’s possession which showed thatsomething seemed to be wrong with theway that grass cutting tenders are hand-led by the municipality.

Not only were more than one contrac-tor appointed to cut the grass in the sa-me areas, some of the contractors werealso paid more than double the amountof money that they tendered for.

The council’s Municipal Public Ac-counts Committee (MPAC) also pickedup various deviations where the muni-cipality’s own procedures were not fol-lowed when millions of rands of taxpay-

ers’ money was spent during Seitisho’stime in office. Some of these related to,amongst other things the purchase of anew computer system for the municipa-lity.

Questions have also been raisedabout some of the personnel appointedduring Seitisho’s tenure in Merafong.

During Seitisho’s time in office no-thing was done about various older is-sues related to corruption within themunicipality. These issues includedthat irregular transactions amountingto R28 093 903.79, which occurred atthe municipality between January2010 and January 2012, were pickedup by auditors.

After the Herald first heard about Se-itisho possibly being called from Mera-fong, the newspaper sent questions tothe municipality.

“The acting municipal manager is se-conded to Merafong City Local Munici-pality by COGTA. We have not receiveda notice from COGTA that the second-ment of the acting municipal manageris terminated or that he is going to bewithdrawn,” a municipal spokespersonreplied on 20 August.

This week, however, several peoplefrom within the municipality, linked todifferent political parties and structu-res, again told the Herald that Seitishois not in office anymore and that hecould have, in fact, been called back byCOGTA. Several employees with whomthe Herald spoke also said that as faras they know, Seitisho’s term has endedon Friday and that he was not employedin Merafong anymore.

When the Herald however phoned his

office on Monday, the secretary who answered his phoneindicated that Seitisho “was away on business for theweek.”

The newspaper also again sent official questionsabout the matter to the municipality. The spokesper-son’s response, sent on Tuesday afternoon, read: “Theacting municipal manager is still acting. He was out ofoffice on official business.”

According to a DA councillor, who is also a mem-ber of MPAC, Mr Vusi Ncunana, the MM’s suddendisappearance was not the only oddity at themunicipality recently.

Although a general council meeting wasscheduled to have taken place on 28 Au-gust, this meeting was last week sudden-ly postponed until 30 September.

Ncunana says he believes that the dateof the meeting was shifted because of thefact that many questions were going tobe raised about the various irregulari-ties that have been uncovered at themunicipality in recent months.“Things are now becoming too hot atthe municipality.

We uncovered more than 100 de-viations during the time that Sei-tisho has been here and he cannotbe allowed to stay,” he indicated.

Ncunana however indicatedthat Seitisho was as far as hecould determine, still in office,but it might not be for long.

The chief of staff is apparent-ly currently compiling a reportwith possible reasons on why Sei-tisho should be removed as MM.

These will allegedly be discus-sed during the council meeting of30 September so that council canofficially decide whether it wants todismiss Seitisho or not.

A woman died and a man was criti-cally injured when their car hit atree in Carletonville’s Annan Roadon Friday 29 August at about 05:00in the morning.

When the police arrived on thescene near the 007 shopping com-plex they found a blue Toyota Corol-

la wedged up against a tree on the sideof the road. It was found that PhumlaMahai, the passenger, had sustained fa-tal injuries in the collision and she wasdeclared dead on the scene. Maandag het Wysneusook opgemerk dat dielaaste stuk van die berug-te Magaliesburgpad, watsteeds as gevolg van diesinkgat gesluit is, deesdaeook ‘n paar slaggate rykeris. Dié pad se strepe is ook plek-pleksó verbleik dat mens dit bykans nie kansien nie.

Só van dié pad gepraat, Wysneushoor dat iemand al weer die afgelopeweek die versperrings om die sinkgatweggestamp en ‘n hele paar voertuie totamper in die gat gery het voor hulle fi-naal deur ander versperrings gestop isen moes omdraai. Wanneer dié pro-bleem ooit opgelos sal word, sal nie-mand weet nie.

Wat ookal die geval was, bestuurdersop dié en ander paaie in ons omgewingmoet maar baie versigtig wees.

Die afgelope week se sterk wind het baie inwoners opnuutdaarvan bewus gemaak dat ons groot omgewingsproble-me in die gebied het.

Inwoners van veral Blyvooruitzicht en Elandsrand seerwe was die afgelope week met mynstof oortrek, nadatdie wind die fyn slik van slikdamme af gewaai het. Baievan die slik was vermoedelik van Blyvoor se slikdamme,wat sedert die myn verlede jaar gelikwideer is, nie meeronderhou word nie.

Hoewel die Groen Skerpioene, wat deel van die Depar-tement van Omgewingsake is, tans met ‘n ondersoek navan Blyvoor se besoedelingsprobleme besig is na ‘n omge-wingsaktivis vroeër vanjaar ‘n saak daaroor by die polisiegeopen het, is dit onseker wat die regering aan die eindevan die dag aan die probleme gaan doen.

Behalwe vir die mynslik, vloei groot hoeveelhede besoe-delde mynwater steeds daagliks van Blyvoor af.

In dié stadium is die Departement van Omgewingsakedie enigste staatsdepartement wat op die ou end aan dieomgewingsprobleme wat met Blyvoor verband hou, aan-dag gee. Ironies was dié departement nêrens te sien ter-wyl die myn oop was, en daar vermoedelik meer geld wasom probleme aan te spreek nie. In dié tyd was die Depar-tement van Waterwese, wat nou oënskynlik belangrikerdinge het wat hul besig hou, die enigste wat aan sommigevan ons gebied se omgewingsprobleme aandag gegee het.

Indien die regering volhou om só min aandag aan dieprobleme te gee, is dit onseker wat die toekoms vir onsinhou. Omgewingsaktiviste waarsku al lankal dat onsgroot probleme eintlik gaan kom wanneer die myne een-dag toemaak. Aangesien dit nou al só gaan, sal die rege-ring drasties meer ernstig na die probleme moet beginkyk indien inwoners wil hê dat hul gesondheid gewaar-borg moet word.

Uit liefde vir die wêreld het Hy sy enigsteSeun “gegee” om deur sy offer vir ons die ewi-ge lewe te verwerf. Almal wat in Hom glo, salnie in hulle sonde sterf nie, maar vir ewigsaam met God lewe (Joh 3:16).

Om in jou sonde te sterf, is die grootste el-lende wat ‘n mens kan oorkom. Dit betekendat jy God se liefde verwerp het en die ewigedood sal ingaan.

As Jesus na Homself verwys as “Ek is watEk is”, gebruik Hy die Naam waarmee GodHomself aan Moses bekendgemaak het bydie brandende doringbos (Eks 3:14). Jesus

is aan die Vader verbind, Hy en die Vader iseen (Joh 10:30).

Wie Hom nie aanvaar as die “Ek is wat Ekis“ nie, het nie ‘n verlosser nie, want hy verwerpdie Een wat deur die hemelse Vader gestuuris en gaan daarom vir ewig verlore (Joh 8:24).

Die Boodskap sê treffend dat daar net eenMens is wat ons kan help om by God uit te komen dit is Christus Jesus (1 Tim 2:5).

Gedring en gelei deur die Heilige Gees moetjy die Here, die Seun van God, soek om deurdie geloof vergifnis en bevryding van sonde tevind en op daardie manier die ewige verdoe-menis te ontvlug.

Jesus het vir sommige Jode gesé dat hulleHom sal soek, maar dit het vir hulle te laat ge-word. Wanneer Hy na die Vader gaan, sal hullegeleentheid om Hom te vind verby wees (Joh7:34, 8:21).

Omdat genadetyd verbygaan, moet jy die He-re soek terwyl Hy nog te vinde is (Jes 55:6,1933/53-vertaling). As jou sterwensuur aan-

breek en jy steeds weier om die Seun vanGod as Verlosser te aanvaar, is dit vir jou viraltyd te laat.

Almal wat van “hier onder” is en tot die wê-reld behoort, moet glo in Jesus Christus wat“van daar bo” is, wat uit die hemel gekomhet. Dan kan hulle kinders van God word envir ewig lewe (Joh 1:12; 3:36 en 8:23).

Wysneus sien die afgelope week dat ‘nhele paar inwoners al begin het om hultuine vir die lente en somer reg te kry.

Hy het Maandag in Paul Krugerstraatafgery en het dadelik die pragtige groengrasperk ‘n blok of so van die klein su-permark af gesien. Behalwe dat Wys-neus nie wil weet wat dié mense se wa-terrekening is as hy kyk na hoeveel wa-ter hulle op hul grasperk uitspuit nie,wens hy dat ander inwoners ook ‘n biet-jie meer aandag aan hul tuine en sy-paadjies wil gee. Hoekom kan ons dorpnie ook mooi lyk nie?

Businessesmen from Khutsong are upin arms because the municipality stillseems to favour certain particularstreets above others when it comes toupgrading.

The Herald reported last week thatthe municipality has employed contrac-tors to pave certain individual streetsin Khutsong South. Many residents arepuzzled because the streets that are be-ing upgraded do not carry a lot of trafficand are not linked to main roads oreven other tarred streets.

This week, members a group of busi-nessmen belonging to an organisationcalled the Business Concerned Group(BCG), again showed the Herald ano-ther street on which a seemingly puzz-ling upgrade is being done. When theHerald visited the street, MphathaStreet in Khutsong’s Skopas Section,employees of a contractor were hard atwork preparing the street to be paved.

“We do not know why the municipali-ty decided to pave this street. It is nota main route carrying a lot of traffic andthere are many much older streets car-rying more traffic that have never beenupgraded,” a member of the BCG, MrParks Leping, told the Herald on Mon-day.

“Skopas is one of the newer areas inKhutsong. There are streets in areas li-ke the Tswana, Xhosa and Zulu Secti-ons which are still gravel roads despitethe fact that they have been existing sin-ce Khutsong inception,” another mem-ber of the organisation, Mr Abe Malefo,told the Herald.

According to the BCG, they have triedto get more information from the muni-cipality over what criteria were used tochoose which streets would be upgra-ded.

“They do not have answers and arealso not visiting the community to in-form them of what their plans are. Asfar as we have heard, there are a lot ofmoney for such projects which are lyingunused. We are very concerned aboutthe way in which the municipality is de-aling with this issue,” another memberof the organisation, Mr Steve Marumu-le, indicated.

For this reason they are busy comple-ting a document to report some of theissues that the community has been ex-periencing to the Office of the PublicProtector.

“We want the Public Protector to in-vestigate the issues of corruption andmaladministration in Merafong. We al-so want the municipality to realise howimportant it is to liaise with the public.

In the meantime, the BCG is also un-happy about the way in which the muni-cipality is giving out tenders. The up-grading of Mphatha Street, for instan-ce, is allegedly being done by acontractor who is not from Merafong.

“This is not a bridge that needs speci-al skills to build. There are many peo-

ple here who can do this work,” Malefoindicated.

“The identification, funding and exe-cution of municipal projects are part ofan ongoing municipal public consulta-tion process. The need for projects orproject identification is done based oncommunity input through the wardcommittee system.

“These inputs are included in the IDPof the municipality. Including the iden-tified “need” in the IDP does not meanthat the project will be executed in thenext financial year or even in the fore-seeable outer years. It simply meansthat the need has been noted,” the mu-nicipal spokesperson replied to questi-ons from the Herald about the issue onTuesday.

“The compiled IDP containing theneeds identified both by the communityand from a technical perspective is thentaken back to the community for com-munity consultation. This is done an-nually. Streets to be paved, stormwaterto be installed, sports fields to be buildare all identified listed and funding toexecute these projects applied for. All

projects are prioritised to be executedwith the available money or budget du-ring the specific year and in the outeryears.

“It might be that a specific need iden-tified does not get executed for a consi-derable period of time, since no moneycan be found for its execution.

“The paving of the roads in KhutsongSouth around the library forms part ofa “renovation of stormwater inlets inthe Wedela and Carletonville Project.”The Herald reported on the blocking ofstormwater systems in gravel road are-as a number of times in the past years.This leads to water pounding which isdetrimental to the health and living con-ditions of the community and in the ca-se of Khutsong, also dangerous with re-gard to the dolomitic situation under-ground.

“The project was funded internallyand the total budget amounted toR1,1 million. The project was startedin the 2013/14 financial year and wasrolled over to the current financial year.This project is an example of a projectwhich was done due to technical requi-rements.

“In Khutsong Proper there are threetarring projects. Two of which are in Ex-tension 2 (Extension 2 is commonly re-ferred to as Skoppas) and a third nearHlanganani School. The project is in-cluded in the Mini Business Plan forRoads and Stormwater on the IDP for2014/15.

“The total distance of paved (tarred)road planned for 2014/15 is just over7km. The total new roads planned forKhutsong is just over 3km. Wards thatwill benefit from new roads are Wards20, 26, 3, 4 and 7.

“The municipality’s budget for newroads is R 23 million,” the spokesper-son concluded.

“Ek verstaan nie hoekom niemandiets aan hierdie probleem doen nie.Niemand onderhou meer Blyvoor semynhope nie. Nou in die winter is ditso droog dat die slik so fyn soos poeieris wat oral kan inkom. Ek weet die my-ne betaal rehabilitasiegelde aan die re-gering. Hoekom doen hulle dan niksnie? Dalk sal iemand begin optree in-dien ons met ‘n protes begin,” het Oost-huizen gekla. Intussen het inwonersvan Blyvoor aangedui dat Vrydag sesterk wind die fyn mynstof op dié dagin hul rigting gewaai het. Inwoners vandié myndorp het ook foto’s aan die He-rald gestuur van hoe hul tuine met die

mynstof besoedel is. “Hierdie mynstofis radioaktief en vol allerhande giftigestowwe.

Die besoedeling wat tans by Blyvoorplaasvind, is skokkend. Dit is ‘n tipiesevoorbeeld van hoe dinge skeefloopwanneer daar nie die korrekte prose-dure gevolg word wanneer ‘n myn toe-maak nie,” het die bekende omge-wingsaktivis, me. Mariette Liefferink,Dinsdag aan die Herald gesê. Liefferinkhet in Februarie ‘n saak by die polisiegeopen oor die besoedeling wat by Bly-vooruitsig plaasvind. Dié saak worddeur die Groen Skerpioene, wat deelvan die Departement van Omgewingsa-ke is, ondersoek. Liefferink het verdui-delik dat myne wat wil toemaak, vol-gens wet veronderstel is om ‘n sluiting-sertifikaat van die regering te bekom.

Voordat só ‘n sertifikaat uitgereikword, moet daar egter ‘n risiko-as-sessering van die moontlike proble-me wat die myn agterlaat, gedoenword. Mense wat in die omgewingwoon waar die myn toemaak, moetook by in die proses om die myn tesluit, geraadpleeg word en ‘n ooreen-koms moet tussen alle betrokke par-tye bereik word oor hoe die pro-bleem hanteer sal word.

“Die enigste staatsdepartementwat hulle aan Blyvoor se problemesteur, is die Departement van Omge-wingsake. Die diens wat die Departe-mente van Minerale Hulpbronne enWaterwese en die Nasionale Kernre-guleerder by Blyvoor gee, is uitersswak,” het Liefferink Dinsdag aandie Herald gesê.

A resident of Khutsong believes thathe knows where the so-called “Kru-ger Millions” are to be found.

Mr Elliot Mninawe (58), a formermineworker of Blyvoor who hasbeen in Merafong since 1982 afteroriginally hailing from the EasternCape, has been carrying an unusualburden for more than 17 years.

In 1997, he saw a vision in whichpeople who he had never seen beforewere telling him about treasures,consisting of gold coins and bars,buried at several places in Mpuma-langa and Gauteng. Some of the alle-ged treasure is even situated in theDoornfrontein area in Merafong.

According to Mninawe, the peoplein his visions told him that they wantthe gold handed over to the ANC Go-vernment so that it can be used touplift people in the former Transvaaland Free State Provinces. The for-mer Transvaal is now divided intoGauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopoand Northwest.

Coincidentally these twoprovinces were run by theBoers until the Anglo-Boer War, which las-ted from 1898 to1901. Duringthe war, theBritish Go-vernment al-so gainedcontrol ofthese twonorthernprovinces.Since this ti-me there has beena persistent legend aboutthe so-called “KrugerMillions.” According tothe legend, the formerPresident of the thenZAR (Zuid-AfrikaanseRepubliek), Paul Kruger,took gold belonging to his

government and hid it from the Britishsomewhere in the countryside beforegoing into exile in France.

According to Mninawe, he only readup about these facts later. After first re-ceiving the visions, he has tried his bestto get the attention of government. Heat first tried in vain to meet the thenPresident Nelson Mandela and also la-ter tried to get other government offici-als interested in his story.

On Monday Mninawe told the He-rald’s journalist through an interpreterthat he has followed the maps revealedto him and has, in fact, found the treas-ures, the most of which are stored ina cave in Mpumalanga. Unfortunatelyhe found that, just like in his visions,the gold is kept in huge, heavy drumson which a heavy metal plate has beenput. For this reason he could not remo-ve it by himself.

ry out the task. Apparently he was an-swered that it was because he wouldnot try to take the money for himselfand would do what he was told.

According to Mninawe, he has at ti-mes tried to ignore the people talkingto him in the visions, but has allegedlythen felt something shocking his bodyuntil he listened to them again. He toldon Monday that the people talking tohim in the visions include some of hisown forefathers, Nelson Mandela’s fa-ther - the tribal chief Gadla HenryMphakanyiswa Mandela, the late Xho-sa king Xolilizwe Sigcawu and even Nel-son Mandela himself, who allegedlytold Mninawe that the informationabout the hidden gold was never con-veyed to him by his personnel while hewas still alive.

Mninawe says that he is still trying toget the government’s attention becausea part of the treasure has allegedly re-cently been flooded and might be indanger. He is also afraid that the samespirits might start tormenting hischildren if he does not deal with the is-sues before he dies.

According to the website South CapeCoins, some say that the so-called Kru-ger Millions, or part of it, was buriedin the Lowveld area, whilst othersclaim that a substantial amount of itwas taken with President Kruger whenhe fled to Europe towards the end of1900. What is known is that on the 4thof June 1900, President Kruger andhis closest associates began preparati-ons to leave the country. They left Pre-toria by train and headed for Macha-dodorp in the Lowveld. Here they setup offices and apartments in thetrain carriages and remained thereuntil the time came for them tocross the border to Mozambiqueand leave for Europe from there.Legend has it though that thetrain also carried a large freight

of gold coins and bars and thestory gained credibility a fewdays later when Lord Mil-ner discovered that a huge

amount of money had been removedfrom the SA Mint and NationalBank.

The final tally revealed that over1.5 million pounds was unaccoun-ted for when Milner took control ofthe Republic. The 2 million poundsthat was, according to the legend, ta-ken in total in 1900 is estimated tobe worth over $250,000,000.00 to-day. Many people, however, claimthat the Kruger millions only exist inlegend.

One of Carletonville's oldest residents, MrsSally Cusick, turned 102 years old on Satur­day, 30 August. Get what you want - is a positive andcommanding title of a new book writ-ten by Motsheki Rabotapi (31), a mo-tivated young man from Khutsongtownship.

He has been pursuing a career asan artist before he began his ventureas a writer. Through the inspirationof writing lyrics he felt a need to writemore, as music was not enough forhim to express himself. To expandhis writing; he took the first step to-wards composing the self-publishedbook in 2012 and he completed theproject in April 2014.

“It took a lot of dedication using mycontacts and figuring out that youcould actually do it yourself,” he says.The writer popularly known as“Quan” has demonstrated the unlimi-ted possibilities that are there for yo-ung people who aspire to do some-thing positive with their lives. Thebook is motivational and aims at in-spiring people to continue dreamingas he feels that most people have losttouch with that aspect of life.

He is also involved with life skillsprogrammes that take place at Tshe-po Themba Development Centre inKhutsong. He is very determined tomake a difference in his communitythrough writing and also public spea-king with an aim to reach as many yo-ung people as he possibly can. He is

planning to promote his book throughschools and he is also looking forwardto writing three more books in the nearfuture.

The current book is divided into sixchapters which he defines as the sixprinciples that young people can learnto apply in their daily lives.

The book is meant to change themind-sets of young people to being po-sitive and brewing the right energy toachieve one’s short and long-term go-

als. It is a self-help book and anyonecan read it as he uses simple and di-rect English.

“I want to continue writing and I feellike there is so much issues to tackle,so I want to write more to share infor-mation with people,” he said. Quanhas received positive feed- back so farand people are showing interest to-wards reading his motivational book.He also encourages young writers tofollow in his example and take the ini-tiative to publishing their own workand he added that they should usetools such as the internet to get infor-mation on how to materialise theirdreams.

Question: When did you start rap-ping?

Answer: It all started in the year 2002when I used to attend hip-hop sessionsin Khutsong - that’s when I fell in lovewith the art. I was inspired by a few rap-pers who have been in the game for awhile and it wasn’t easy to make peoplelisten to what I had to say.

Question: What inspired you to takerapping seriously?

Answer: When I saw talented peoplein my township not taking their talentsseriously I decided to do the opposite.And I was also inspired by popular ar-tists making a success of themselvesand I thought I could do the same.

Question: How has your music evol-ved?

Answer: My skill has improved andI was able to become one of the well-known artists in my township and I al-so managed to get people to listen to meand actually consider me as the best.I have also managed to get gigs outside

of Khutsong.Question: How has the experience on

Answer: When I was on Shiz Niz, Iwas able to gain respect from a lot ofpeople because they had seen me on t.vand I was able to gain the exposure thatI needed.

Question: What keeps you going?Answer: People who are against me

actually inspire me to stay positive be-cause that type of pressure makes mewant to do more, for the fact that thereare people out there listening to my mu-sic. It also proves that I have got whatit takes to gain people’s attention andthat there are people who want to be li-ke me.

Question: Where would you like tosee yourself in 5 years’ time?

Answer: I see myself as Mzantsi’snext big thing, performing at big gigs,my music playing on radio everydayand being an inspiration to other kids.

Question: What are the challenges asa rapper?

Answer: Money is the biggest issuebecause sometimes I get gigs from farand they are not always paying.

Question: How would you describeyour music?

Answer: My music style has that ka-si(township) vibe. It’s more like oldschool hip-hop mixed with a bit ofkwaito. I usually rap about where I’mfrom and where I’m going. I also makeuse of story-telling in my songs.

Question: What do you prefer? Fameor fortune?

Answer: I prefer both because it isthe music industry and you cannot ha-ve one without the other.

Answer: I am currently working ona mixtape which will be dropping at theend of September and you can get it on-line for free. My album will be releasedin November. I have also been workingon a music video for my latest singleed‘Zonke’ and it will be out when my mix-tape is released.

An ambitious group of young peoplehas decided to take up the battleagainst the high level of illiteracy inSouth Africa.

The Khutsong Literary Club wasfounded in April 2012, under the con-stituency of Tshepo Themba Develop-ment Centre. The club evolved into amovement that is not only based on re-ading books, but they have also develo-ped other ways of facilitating the lear-ning process involving poetry, audio -and visual learning.

The young men who are part of thegroup have joined forces as poets, ar-tists and thinkers and they are positi-vely driven by their incredible passionfor the development of their communi-ty. They have managed to host poetryworkshops and a Merafong poetrycompetition which took place at Ko-kosi Hall in Fochville. They have alsomanaged to attract other young peoplethrough hosting youth dialogues whichalso involve the Department of SocialDevelopment.

The movement aspires to improvecreative awareness about drug abuseand other issues affecting their com-munity. They aim at cultivating a cultu-re of reading even though they have tofight the negative attitudes of many pe-ople towards reading. They are passio-nate about African history as they feelit is important for them to understandwhere they come from in order to knowwhere they are going. They host rea-ding sessions on Mondays 10:30am-11:30am and Thursdays 14:30pm-15:30pm at the modular library nextto the main clinic in Khutsong. They

use their given time to read, watch do-cumentaries and engage in discussi-ons relating to the particular topic.They are planning on publishing theirown book consisting of their writtenpoetry works and on Saturdays theygather at the Maxhoseng Spatial Parkby the rocks with drums and youngkids around to recite their poetry.Their long term goal is to establish abuilding that will be functional for lear-ning programmes involving indige-nous games and arts. They highlightthe importance of reading because itassists in informed decision-makingand helps to facilitate better under-standing. The work for the young menhas only begun as they strive to make

a difference in their environment whe-re drugs and alcohol abuse is rife.Their doors are always open for youngpeople who would like to join the jour-ney towards edu-cation and theirrelated work andon the 28th ofSeptember theywill be part of theJoburg Book Fairseminar in Jo-hannesburg. Situated in a mining area, Carletonvilleis a relatively a new town that was foun-ded in the 1950’s.

It has a short history and eventhough it is close to the richest gold mi-nes in the whole world, our town dis-plays a serious lack of facilities for thecommunity. Especially young people

have very little to do. If people of thisarea could come up with ideas for deve-lopment, things might just take a turnfor the better.

It would be interesting to see what the

vibrant youth of Carletonville would doif they had a chance to improve or reno-vate this area - here is what they hadto say.

What could be done to change our town?

Kefilwe Lekabe(17).Basically the placeis very untidy andpeople shouldchange their mind­set about litteringand we need peopleto realise that thereis so much evil lur­king around and pe­ople should let Godbe part of their li­ves. Youths mustbe positive and letthat energy rub offon other people.

MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME REPORT FOR NEW DIMENSIONS OF THE TAILINGS STORAGE

FACILITY AND THE RECLAMATION OF THE WASTE ROCK DUMP AT KUSASALETHU OPERATIONS,

Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited (Harmony) is the owner and operator of Kusasalethu Mine, which comprises of the Kusasalethu Operations (formerly Elandsrand Operations) and the Deelkraal Operations. Kusasalethu Mine is situated within the Merafong City Local Municipality and West Rand District Municipality, Gauteng Province. The Mine has an approved Mining Right (Ref No. GP/30/5/1/1/2/07 MR) and Environmental Management Programme (EMP) and is under the jurisdiction of the Gauteng Department of Mineral Resources (DMR).

Project Background and DescriptionThe mining undertaken at the Kusasalethu Operations entered into production in December 1978 and produces gold bearing slag with silver as a by-product. Harmony bought the Elandsrand Operations from AngloGold Ashanti in 2001.

Harmony intends to expand and incorporate the new height details and footprint of the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) at their Kusasalethu Operations to ensure that the waste facilities are able to sustain the operations for the Life of Mine (LoM). In addition, the maximum dimensions of the Waste Rock Dump (WRD), as it currently stands, will be incorporated for the Department’s record. Harmony intends to include the crushing operation for waste rock to use as aggregate. Furthermore, Harmony intends to expand its mining right to include the farm portions to the south west of the TSF and WRD; Portions 2, 7, 8, 9, 29, 32, 33, 39, 40, 41, 42 and 43 of the farm Deelkraal 142 IQ. The expanded mining area will be an extension of the existing underground workings, approximately 3.5 km below ground level; no additional surface infrastructure will be constructed as part of the Project. Harmony has amended its Mining Works Programme (MWP) to include the expanded area.

According to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 (Act No. 28 of 2002) (MPRDA), Harmony is required to obtain consent for the amendment of the approved EMP in terms of Section 102, for the inclusion of the WRD, crushing activities for aggregate, new dimensions of the TSF and the expansion of the existing underground workings.

The Kusasalethu Operations are located approximately 12 km south west of Carletonville and 14 km west of Fochville. The mining undertaken at the Kusasalethu Operations (previously Elandsrand) entered into production in December 1978 and produces gold bearing slag with silver as a by-product. Harmony bought the Elandsrand Operations from AngloGold Ashanti in 2001. The TSF and WRD are separated by a sewage treatment plant and are located directly south to the Kusasalethu Shaft and mine offi ces.

It is important to investigate the potential impacts that the proposed Project may have on the environment. Harmony has appointed Digby Wells Environmental as the independent Environmental Assessment Practitioners to undertake the Section 102 amendment and associated specialist studies for the inclusion of the new dimensions of the WRD and TSF.

Die Merafong City krieketklub is regvir die nuwe seisoen met verskeiespanne wat die komende seisoen inligawedstryde sal meeding. Volgensdié klub se voorsitter, Ben Rademey-er, sal altesaam vyf spanne van Mera-fong vanjaar in die Noordwes-unie seligas meeding.

“Vir die eerste keer in die klub segeskiedenis sal die eerste én tweedespan saam in die Premier A-ligaspeel en die klub is baie opgewondeoor dié vooruitsig,” het RademeyerDinsdag aan die Herald gesê. Die

klub se derdespan sal in die eersteliga speel, terwyl die vierde span opSondae in die tweede liga die omge-wing sal verteenwoordig. Merafongse vrouespan sal ook Sondae in dievroueliga speel.

Volgens Rademeyer is enige mans-en vrouespelers welkom om by dieklub aan te sluit. “Oefeninge is elkeWoensdag om 16:30 by die nette vandie Carletonville Hoërskool en Don-derdae om 16:30 by die nette inFochville by die klub,” sê hy. Krieketspelers reg vir nuwe seisoen

A relatively new soccer team fromKhutsong this year managed to do sowell in a short time that they are nowplaying in their second league for theseason.

According to Theo Mafatle, the coachof the Westcol team, he started the teamin January 2013 after noticing muchtalent among youngsters from Khuts-ong who were at that time studying atthe Westcol FET college in Carletonvil-le. Being a lecturer at this facility, Ma-fatle has been in an ideal position to no-tice talent.

Although the team is not an officialteam for the college, and was at one sta-ge also known as the “Clever Boys”, thename Westcol stuck because all theother teams knew from where the teamoriginated. Many of the team’s currentplayers are not students at the facilityanymore.

“One of the reasons why I started theteam was to help the good players evenafter they finished at college. I also wan-ted to keep young people busy so thatthey do not get involved in gangsterismor crime,” Mafatle told the Herald.

Mafathle, who hails from the Coles-

berg area in the Northern Cape, usedhis own experience as a former profes-sional player to hone the young men’sskill in the sport. Although they onlyplayed against other company teams in2013, two players, Paseka Sepotokeleand Lebohang Sheling, was respective-ly chosen for the Orlando Pirates Re-serve Side and the Nedbank Cup team,which was trained by the current natio-nal coach, Shakes Mashaba.

According to Mafathle, it is one of hisgoals to get as many of the youngstersas possible chosen for bigger teams sothat they can make a career out of soc-cer if possible.

This year the team came into the lo-cal league with a bang when they mana-ged to walk off as winners despite play-ing against the other teams for the firsttime. As a result of this victory, the ma-naged to secure a place in the trials forthe SAB League that were played on 22and 29 July. After beating the SandtonMasters from Bekkersdal 2 - 0 and en-ding in a 0 - 0 draw with the Drift AC’s,Wescol was chosen to play in the SABLeague, in which they are currentlycompeting.

This honour has, however, alsobrought some difficulties for the team.

As there are no grass-covered soccerfields in Khutsong but all SAB Leaguematches have to be played on grass, theWestcol team has to travel to the PopoMolefe Stadium in Kokosi for their ho-me games. For away games they haveto travel even further. As they do not ha-ve a sponsor, this means that the teamonly has money to practise at the dirtfacilities such as the Spades Groundsin Khutsong on which they trained be-fore. This puts them at a serious disad-vantage when they have to play againstteams who are used to training on thecorrect surface. Despite this, the team’smorale continues to be very high.

“This is the most disciplined team.You never have to force them to do any-thing because everyone does theirpart,” says the team’s manager, Bonga-ni Mgqubeni.

He also thanked the Development Of-ficer of the Merafong Loical Soccer As-sociation, Hloni Kharejane, for the as-sistance that he gives the team withtheir administration.

Despite being part of the Piratessquad last year, Paseka Sepotokele isalso back in Khutsong this year andsays that he loved playing with his ho-me team.

Hoërskool Fochville se rugbyspannehet baie goed presteer tydens die Roo-depoort reeks vir Hoërskole wat verle-de week ten einde geloop het.

Fochies kon daarin slaag dat al driesy spanne in die finale rondte vir be-kers kon uitspeel.

Die o/15-span van Fochies het ’ntweede plek behaal in die o/15 finaalwaar hulle teen Bekker Hoërskool vas-geval het.

In die plaat-finaal van die C-Afdelinghet Fochies se tweede span met diespan van Bryanston afgereken om so-doende die trofee wat in 2013 deur Fo-chies se voornemende eerste span ge-wen is, weer in Fochville te laat staan.

Volgens mnr. Corrie Jordaan, diespan se buite-afrigter, is dit ’n besonde-re prestasie vir die skool se tweedespan om die prestasies van verlede jaarse eerste span te kon ewenaar.

Die Fochies XV-tal moes teen die eer-ste spanne van ander skole meedingom die beker te verower. Mnr. Ryno He-ver, ’n voormalige eerste span afrigterwat die span tans afrig, het gesê diespan het gewys waartoe hulle in staatis deur onder andere die eerste spanvan Callies in die half eindstryd in ek-stra tyd te wen.

Die prestasie is ook ’n bewys dat Fo-chies se rugby gesond is en oor baiediepte beskik.

In die plaat-afdeling van die B-afde-ling het Fochies se voornemende eerstespan vasgeval teen ’n gedetermineerdespan van Bekker Hoërskool. Die man-ne in blou het halftyd voorgeloop met10 punte teen 8, maar ongelukkig hethulle die voet van die versneller afge-

haal en die manne van Bekker toegelaatom terug te kom en die wedstryd 23–13 te wen. Fochies het dus as die naas-wenners in die plaat-finaal van die B-li-ga geëindig. Volgens mnr. Bobby McLe-od, Hoërskool Fochville se sport-orga-niseerder en eerste span afrigter, hetdie skool aan al die doelwitte wat hullevir hulself gestel het voldoen en selfsdaarop verbeter.

Hoërskool Fochville se hoof, mev. Ro-nel Lambrecht, het na afloop van diereeks gesê sy is trots op die spelers watdie skool se naam hoog gehou het ty-dens die toernooi. Sy het ook die spe-lers en afrigters wat in die skolereeksse spanne vir 2014 ingesluit is, met diebesondere prestasie gelukgewens.

Verskeie van die skool se rugbyspe-lers is in skolereeks spanne opgeneem.

Die o/15’s se flank, Duncan McLeod, endie skrumskakel, Jaco Vewas, is vir diespan van hul ouderdomsgroep gekies.Die spelers wat vir die o/18 seniorspangekies is, is die stut, Tiaan Kriek, dieflank, Shorne de Lange, die skrumska-kel, Franco Claasen en die senter, Charldu Toit.
