he mystery of evil, like floodwaters, seeks its own level. Where evil abounds, grace abounds even more – including buzzwords of starting over. Let’s look at one: lifestyle change. This is the buzzword that is now associated with climate change and carbon footprints, recycling and re-using, and the latest: ‘preemptive’ relief goods for those who undergo preemptive evacuation in anticipation of typhoons. How do we begin this lifestyle change?

any people died during Ondoy and Pepeng’s onslaught. Many of our brothers and sisters lost someone dear to them — a brother, a sister, a mother, a father, a son, a daughter, a friend. Many lost homes, properties and livelihood. To our brothers and sisters who suffered, please accept our sympathies and prayers. May the Lord God wipe away the tears from all (our) faces, Isaiah 25:8. Yet, also during these times of crises, the spirit of “bayanihan” is revived. Through different institutions, many of our brothers and

sisters sent help for Ondoy and Pepeng affected families. In this special edition of our Caritas Good Newspaper, we would like to thank those who extended help, assistance, cash donations, and donations-in-kind. We would also like to thank the numerous volunteers and servant leaders who continue to make the Church network for relief operations possible. We also offer prayers of thanks to those who chose to remain anonymous. Again, we thank you all for your donations of time, talent, and treasure. Although we at

Caritas Manila pray that all of us be saved from such challenges, nevertheless we will definitely be counting on each other again when the time comes.

God bless you all.

few days after the on-slaught of Typhoon Ondoy, His Eminence Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales, Chairman of Caritas Manila, Archbish-op of Manila and Cardinal of the Church challenged Catholics to come to the aid of the families heavily affected by typhoon Ondoy and the floods. The visionary Cardinal, noted for shying away from politics and more known for pastoral work, environ-mental concern and Pondo ng Pinoy released a circu-lar requesting all priests, religious and laity in the parishes especially parishes under the Archdiocese and the suffragan dioceses to conduct a special collec-tion for the victims of the Ondoy disaster. The special collection was scheduled last October 4 and was to cover all Sunday masses on the said date in all parishes, chapels and malls including anticipated masses. Dona-tions in kind were also wel-comed. “The tragedy brought about by Typhoon Ondoy continues with devastating consequences in the lives, homes and neighborhood of many people around Metro Manila and most of South-ern and Central Luzon. A destruction as large as this becomes a call to all of us to reach out to our brothers and sisters who are out there literally still wet and cold — homeless,” wrote Cardinal

relief packs. Bulk of the said amount has gone to Mega Manila urban poor families that were flooded and iso-lated by Typhoon Ondoy. With the total amount re-leased, Caritas Manila has provided relief assistance to 145,539 poor families. The average cost of relief assis-tance per family is PhP 315.

Caritas Damay Kapanalig has so far extended relief assistance in the Archdio-cese of Manila (covering the cities of Manila, Makati, Pasay, San Juan, and Man-daluyong), the dioceses of Pasig, Kalookan, Cubao, Novaliches, Malolos, San Pablo, Parañaque, and An-tipolo for Ondoy affected areas and dioceses of Tu-guegarao, Bontoc-Lagawe, San Fernando La Union, Baguio, Urdaneta, Laoag, Nueva Segovia, Ilagan, Lin-gayen-Dagupan, Alaminos, Bayombong, Tabuk, and Bangued for areas affected by Pepeng. “The Church’s network of parishes, schools, priests, nuns, and volunteers can easily mo-bilize and deliver much help in the affected areas. However, the real heroes behind Caritas’ relief op-erations are the numerous donors and the volunteers. Without their contribu-tions, there would be no relief efforts. It is through these helpful, institutions, companies, organizations, individuals, and families that God’s help flows,” reminds Rev. Fr. Anton CT Pascual, Executive Director of Cari-tas Manila.

Over 145,000 poor families received aid from Caritas Manila’s Damay Kapanalig Ondoy & Pepeng Relief Op-erations. Of the said figure, over 133,000 poor families were Ondoy victims from Mega Manila and Southern Tagalog areas while over 12,500 poor families were from areas affected by Pep-eng from regions one, two and three up north. Now that the relief part is over, the remaining funds will be channelled to rehabilitation efforts such as scholarships, microfinance and livelihood programs. While some funds are also retained as part of the Caritas Emer-gency Fund for future cri-ses and disasters, explained Gina Santos, Caritas Ma-nila’s program officer in charge of Caritas Damay Kapanalig.

Damay Kapanalig Typhoon Program was able to raise PhP 39.3 million in cash do-nations, and PhP 23.7 mil-lion worth of donations in kind. With Caritas being the Church’s social service arm and radio veritas846 be-ing the Catholic AM radio station, it was not surpris-ing that over a third of the donations came from the Church or religious sec-tor such as cash donations from parishes, priests, and the different dioceses. Private corporations, institutions, and organiza-tions contributed over PhP 13.6 million in cash and in-kind assistance for Ondoy and Pepeng. International support brought in PhP 15 million worth of material and monetary aid. Government support was also substantial. Gov-ernment sector contribu-tion to Caritas Damay Ka-panalig Typhoon Program also reached over PhP five and a half million in cash and in-kind donations and assistance.

aritas Manila and SM Supermalls joined forces last September 30 to bring aid and relief to the families affected by typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng. SM supermalls in cooperation with SM Foundation set up Opera-tion Tulong Express booths in all SM Supermalls nation-wide. From October 1 to October 15, 2009, all par-ticipating SM SUPERMALLS accepted donations (cash and in-kind) for victims of typhoon Ondoy and Pep-eng. Donations collected by SM SUPERMALLS will be turned-over to Caritas Manila. Donations in kind from Metro Manila Malls, will also be delivered to Caritas Manila. SM also tied up with Channels 4, 9 and 13 in an effort to consolidate ef-forts so that these channels

will direct their viewers to bring donations to Tulong Express counters. The SM Supermalls Tu-long Express booths were set up in different areas of participating malls to en-able people to have easy access to drop off their donations. Tulong Express accepted various donations like canned goods, bottled water, medicines, clothes, towels, blankets, toiletries, cleaning materials including cash. SM mall-goers were also encouraged to donate their time and effort to help Ondoy and Pepeng victims through Operation Tulong Express. SM also set up Operation Tulong Hotlines for inquiries during the campaign.

7.) crusade against wastage and irresponsible accumulation of goods8.) strengthened by the spirit of volunteerism9.) provides cheap and usable goods10.) utilizes 100% donated goods

This echoes what Pope Benedict XVI wrote in Caritas in Veritate about our duties arising from our relationship to the natural environment: “The envi-ronment is God’s gift to everyone, and in our use of it we have a responsibility towards the poor, towards future generations and towards humanity as a whole. When nature, including the human being, is viewed as the result of mere chance or evolutionary deter-minism, our sense of responsibility wanes. In nature, the believer recognizes the wonderful result of God’s creative activity, which we may use responsibly to satisfy our legitimate needs, material or otherwise, while respecting the intrinsic balance of creation. If this vision is lost, we end up either considering na-ture an untouchable taboo or, on the contrary, abus-ing it. Nature expresses a design of love and truth. It is prior to us, and it has been given to us by God as the setting for our life.”

EDITORIAL

Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales, Archbishop of Manila, guides us by deepening his catechism of the crumbs. He encourages us to examine what we have now that we have no immediate or further use for, and to share them now or to give them now to those who need them, rather than just accumulate them in our homes and offices. This now translates to Segunda Mana sa Damay Kapanalig, the donations-in-kind program of Caritas Manila to help victims of Ondoy and Pepeng, and those who will undergo preemptive evacuation in the light of future typhoons and other calamities. Multiplying God’s blessing by handing down these “treasures” or “mana” to people who can still value and use them. Segunda Mana is grounded on ten fundamental principles:

1.) stewardship as a way of life2.) responsibility to develop God’s gifts for the common good3.) sharing of time, talent and treasure4.) pro-environment5.) advocates the culture of recycling and order6.) reinforces the universal destination of goods
